Watch Out For The Curse Of Oasis

If the Gallaghers ever ask you to be on the cover of one of their records, think twice - you could end up being struck by the curse of Oasis.

Weston-super-Mare's Grand Pier is just the latest to have fallen foul of the dreaded hoodoo.

The 104-year-old iconic landmark that appeared on the Oasis cover of their 1995 single burned down last month. Days later, infamous London record shop Sister Ray went into administration - 13 years after appearing on the front of (What's the Story) Morning Glory?

Football legend George Best was pictured on the band's debut album Definitely Maybe in 1994. The Manchester United ace later died of liver failure. And New York's Twin Towers featured on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, released in 2000 - 18 months before they were destroyed by terrorists.

A source close to Oasis said: "It is a bit of a coincidence."

Luckily, no building or person can be struck by the curse over the band's new album Dig Out Your Soul - the cover is a psychedelic collage.

Manc Singer Is Liam Galloper

Liam Gallagher even jogs like a Rock ’N’ Roll Star – with a bit of swagger and a lot of gobbing.

The snarling Oasis frontman was snapped going for an early morning lung-burner near his north London gaff.

He’s trying to get match fit for the forthcoming world tour.

Word reaches me that he has even managed to knock the fags on the head so his pipes are in top form for the marathon tour.

A wise move when you consider he might have to roar out the band’s classics twice a week for the next 18 months.

He’s no Haile Gebreselassie but if he carries on like this it won’t be soul he’ll be digging out, it’ll be his 32in Levi jeans from 1995.

More On The New Oasis Album

A track by track description from this week's NME.

01: Bag It Up (Noel-written) - Mid-paced stomp featuring the repeated line "Everything I believe in/Is telling me that I want more."

02: The Turning (Noel written) - Floats along on a drum beat similar to The Zombies 'Time Of The Season.'

03: Waiting for the Rapture (Noel-sung) - Almost White Stripes heavy. Lyric ("revolution in the head")

04: Shock of the Lightning - like a massively improved version of It's Getting Better Man. Chorus (Love is a litany/a magical mystery)

05: I'm Outta Time - Beautiful, beautiful Liam balled (complete with Lennon sample) that pips Songbird has his finest songwriting hour.

06: Get Of Your High Horse Lady (Noel-written) - Brief Wild Honey Pie-esque Noel curio.

07: Falling Down - Lyrics: (I tried to talk to God/But to no avail.)

08: To Be Where There’s Life (Gem-written) - Where the new found love of 'The Groove' is most apparent.

09: Ain't Got Nothing - Indeed the track we all heard a few months back. Says it features a. all-new chorus, but the lyrics it prints are ones in the early version.

10: The Nature Of Reality (Andy-written) - Strung out psychedelia.

11: Soldier On - (Liam-written) - Final marching band mantra.

Thanks to Mr Monobrow

Noel also tells a story about meeting and slagging off the bassist from Maroon 5 and how he ended up at his house, the Marylin Manson story and then spends 3 quarters of a page defending himself over Jay Z gate...

The NME watched their rehearsal where they did Supersonic, The Importance Of Being IdleI and The Shock Of The Lightning.

Noel says they were contemplating allowing free entry into their gigs for the whole tour, but then you'd have to pay £75 to get out of the gig.

Noel Gallagher: Guardian Spotty Herberts Piss Me Off

After backing down from his Jay-Z dissing, Noel Gallagher has found a new name for his pain - and it's Guardian and Observer journalists whose parents 'voted for Thatcher'

I'm not having the Guardian in my newsagents. No way. It's wrong."

Ok, so they're not exactly the words that tumbled out of the Oasis man's mouth in today's interview with NME, but he's undoubtedly got a new target to mouth off about. And this time it's, er, us lot at the Guardian and Observer.

Here's what Noel did say, when asked about the Jay-Z debacle: "If people in the fucking Observer and the Guardian wanna get on their high horse about it, there's not a great deal I can do."

He then realises that he's overstepped the mark and backtracks with a nervous apology. Only joking. "It really pisses me off," he continues, "all these spotty herberts whose mams and dads voted for Margaret Thatcher all those years are now sitting on some moral fucking high chair."

Ouch! A quick email circular around the Guardian/Observer music desks provoked a (mild-mannered) storm of protest.

"My parents were fully active members of the Labour party, and I had to go out bloody canvassing with my dad, but if Noel Gallagher wants to get on his high horse about it, there's not a great deal I can do about it," said the associate editor of the Observer Music Monthly.

"My family come from Wales, so the chance of them voting for Thatcher is roughly the same as a cat in hell," came the response from a Guardian subeditor.

"Um, I've always had pretty clear skin," was my contribution. Take that, Noel!

Actually, it's not the only time I've encountered the wrath of the Gallaghers. The first time I met them, Noel told Radio 1's Zane Lowe that he'd been tricked into making a series of outrageous comments because NME had sent "an edgy kid" to interview him. The second interview, meanwhile, ended with Liam staring at me for a good full minute before deciding "You're a fookin' weirdo you are ..." He then went on to list a series of music videos he'd seen me appear in, which was a surreal experience to say the least.

Now, we could go on about Noel's rather Thatcherite ideas here ("If you want [our album] for nowt, you can have it - but you're paying £70 to come and see us live," froths the multi-millionaire at one point).

But really, if he's prepared to back down on his Jay-Z dissing (and let's face it, that's what he's doing here, what with referencing the time he went to see the Def Jam tour in the 90s), we'd like to call a truce, too. After all, phrases such as "moral high-chair" would instantly earn Gallagher a job on these desks. And if we could see a bit more of that, and a little less "True perfection has to be imperfect/I know that that sounds foolish but it's true" on the next Oasis record, the world would be a better place.

Oasis To Kick Off World Tour In October...

Oasis will kick off a massive world tour in October, I can reveal.

The lads are due to announce their plans in the next few weeks — and the tour will be their boldest yet.

The band, who had a 1994 hit with Live Forever, will start their dates in the UK this autumn, head off for more gigs, then return more than 12 months later to wrap things up at home.

Wembley and their beloved Manchester City’s home ground will be among the UK venues.

And some lucky fans will be able to see them play at the intimate Roundhouse in London for a filmed BBC special.

The start of the tour will coincide with the release of seventh studio album Dig Out Your Soul, on October 6.

A source revealed: “The tour is bigger than anything the band have done before.

“They will be on the road for more than a year — possibly pushing 18 months.

“The dates could easily run into three figures and will take them around the world.

“It is on the kind of scale you would expect from The Roliing Stones. The fellas who have hatched the plan are very proud and excited.”

Scraps

I hope the Oasis lads have their hard hats ready.

It’s a hell of a long time for volatile brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher to spend together on the road.

The band have had a fair few scraps on their travels.

On a 1996 tour of the US the band nearly split up as Liam and Noel’s fighting reached new levels.

And they haven’t mellowed quite yet either.

Noel showed how he can still dish it out with a cutting jibe at ex-drummer Tony McCarroll.

Talking to the NME magazine about how new sticksman Chris Sharrock was fitting in, Noel said: “The first few weeks I felt for him because he’s got to drum like four people.

“He’s gotta play like our old drummers Tony McCarroll, Alan White and Zak Starkey and, of course, himself.

“To play drums in Oasis is deceptively difficult. You can’t play like The Who's Keith Moon, particularly on the older stuff, because it wasn’t about drums.

“On Lyla and tracks like that you can pretend to be Moon.

“But the older stuff you’ve got to pretend you’re Tony McCarroll.

“Sit there and be crap with a s**t haircut.”

Let the fun and games begin . . .

Oasis' Noel Gallagher: 'My Night With Marilyn Manson And Kenickie'

Noel Gallagher has spoken about a wild night out – that saw him hanging out with Marilyn Manson and 'Grease' character Kenickie – while mixing Oasis' new album in Los Angeles.

The Oasis leader was over in America working on 'Dig Out Your Soul' with producer Dave Sardy when he and brother Liam Gallagher ended up on a very unlikely wild night out.

In an this extract from NME's exclusive with the guitarist, Noel Gallagher reveals how the self-styled God Of Fuck invited him to a show, after which the Jeff Conaway, the actor who played Kenickie pulled a knife on him.

Check out this extract below, but for the full interview featuring Gallagher on Jay-Z, Maroon 5 and the new Oasis album get this week's issue of NME on UK newsstands from Wednesday (August 6)...

Noel: "Don't ask how, but we know his [Marilyn Manson] bass player, Twiggy."

NME: Twiggy Ramirez. The guy who wears the leather skirt, right?

Noel: "…and he wears a witch's hat as well. Don't ask. So anyway, they're doing a gig, and he says, 'Manson wants you to come up and see him.' He's a massive Oasis fan: 'Be Here Now' is his favourite album because it was recorded on a fucking mountain of charlie. The plan was to get there ten minutes before he comes offstage. Now, along the way the message got garbled and we got there ten minutes before he came onstage…"

NME: So you had to sit through a Marilyn Manson show?

Noel: "We get marched to a spot behind the mixing desk, and there’s all these American goths, and the gig's going on, it's all screaming and shouting, rape and pillage and all that fucking shit. Before one song he goes, '(adopts booming dark lord voice) I WANNA DEDICATE THIS SONG TO THE TWO BIGGEST FUCK-UPS IN ENGLAND!' Me and our kid are looking at him, and looking at each other going, 'He means you, 'cos Lord knows he don’t mean me.' Then he's going, 'OASIS ARE IN THE HOUSE TONIGHT!', and he starts doing 'Cocaine Supernova' and screaming, 'THESE TWO GUYS FROM ENGLAND, THEY'RE BIGGER FUCK-UPS THAN I AM!' Anyway, so we go back after the gig and we just got fucking absolutely… beyond pissed on absinthe. That's when Kenickie from 'Grease' fucking pulled a knife on us.

"He comes into the dressing room, and Liam's been watching 'Celebrity Rehab' so he's going, 'Ah, there's fucking Kenickie!' So we get him over and we're all pissed, so we're like, 'Why are you on a fucking walking stick, you lightweight!?' He's going, 'My back's fucked. Fucking John Travolta in 'Grease' – he's so fucking short, they made me stoop over and that's when I invented the famous Kenickie walk!'

"We were going, 'What?! The famous Kenickie walk?' He started doing this walk so we're giving him a bit of stick. And he says, 'Hey, I'm fucking still young enough to pull a knife on you!' and he whips out this flick-knife. We just laughed, like, 'You silly old man!' That was a great night – we all got more drunk on absinthe and argued in the van all the way home about some Kinks fucking B-side."

For the full interview get this week's NME, on newsstands nationwide from Wednesday (August 6).

Tom Meighan On The New Oasis Album

With their mutual appreciation society, have Kasabian let the Gallagher brothers hear any of the new album?

"No, which is mad," admits Tom. "Now we're back in Leicester, we don't see nearly so much of them. I haven't seen Liam in probably six, seven months.

"I speak to Noel more, I saw him for a drink when I was up in London a couple of weeks ago. It was a civilised night, no major carnage to report."

At least Tom has heard the new Oasis album, which he's very keen on.

"It's going to take a lot of people by surprise," he enthuses. "It's their best record in years, incredible rock & roll and raw as f***. It's mega.

"It's one for us to live up to, but I know we're Publish Postup to the task. It's hard, as I know how incredible our next album is - and I wish it was out there, so people could agree!"

Noel Gallagher Joins Russell Brand Onstage Last Night

Taken from The Radio Show Live - Russell Brand, Matt Morgan, Mr Gee and Noel Gallagher.

Noel Gallagher joined and played 'The Importance Of Being Idle' last night at the Bloomsbury Theatre.

Some of the comments from from the Russell Brand fan forum..........

When Russell mentioned Noel G and people cheered he said they had said "we said no Gallagher fans and yet they still get in".

Someone asked if Russell had been back to grays which he said no, someone reminded him his mum was there and he said 'yes i know, if only she had some kind of millionaire relative"

Second half Noel G is going to start a business where for 15 quid he names your pet because he thinks he has the ability to name animals. Legs, spot, mr whiskers.

Noel called Russell an A.rselicking C-lister. Also described him as 'dancing up and down like a bear on coals that's swallowed a dictionary.

Russell said that Noel had been in France trying to write jokes for the show and Noel said that Russell had gone mad.

We also heard a voicemail that Noel had left after the hoax call. "Well well well, Russell brand thinks it's ok to joke about rape, we'll talk about this on the show on saturday.

Icing on the cake had to be Noel doing "the importance of being idle" Bloody brilliant.

Also

Noel Gallagher joined them for the second half and generally took the **** out of both of them and drank his way through A LOT of beer. However some girl started screaming at Noel for about 10 minutes on and off to the point that Russell had to ask for security to take her out as she had ruined it for everyone.

Noel then did a solo acoustic song, think it was the importance of being idle, and Mr Gee summarised the show with a poem which was awesome, all I can remember is that it ended with the word C**T - we can safely say that the show won't be broadcast!

Oasis Artwork Curse Strikes Again?

Just days after the news that Weston-super-Mare's Grand Pier has been destroyed by fire, landmark London record store Sister Ray has gone into administration, citing competition from free music downloads and a "dearth of good releases".

These two events may seem completely unrelated, but there is a connection – both the Grand Pier and the Sister Ray store appeared on Oasis sleeve artwork in 1995.

The Grand Pier in Weston-super-Mare can be seen here in the background of the Roll With It single cover.

While the Sister Ray frontage appears on the (What's The Story) Morning Glory? sleeve, photographed on Berwick Street in London's Soho.

It doesn't end there though. The cover of Oasis's 1994 debut album Definitely Maybe features the late, great footballing genius and legendary swordsman George Best. As far as we are aware, Burt Bacharach and former Manchester City star Rodney Marsh, who also appear, are both alive and well at the time of writing.

Even the band members themselves aren't immune to this misfortune. Other than Andy Bell, Gem Archer, Liam and Noel Gallagher, every member featured on a cover sleeve has eventually been fired.

Thank goodness that new album Dig Out Your Soul's cover art is just a psychedelic collage.
