Oasis' Noel Gallagher 'Outraged' At Russell Brand BBC Scandal

Oasis' Noel Gallagher has said he is "outraged" at the furore surrounding his friend Russell Brand's radio scandal.

Presenters Brand and Jonathan Ross are suspended from the BBC after making prank calls to actor Andrew Sachs, during which they made comments about Brand sleeping with his granddaughter.

Brand subsequently quit his post as a BBC Radio 2 presenter.

Gallagher told BBC Radio Ulster's Across The Line show that he believed that the media furore surrounding the incident was an overreaction, and described the incident as "at worst a juvenile prank".

"I spoke to Russell, he told me he was going to fall on his sword," Gallagher said. "Personally, I'm outraged that, yet again, the joyless f**kers who write the columns in the Daily Mail, The Telegraph or The Observer have dictated the tone and are telling people how to behave.

"I've seen the Daily Mail, they said that Russell should be arrested and charged. Arrested for what? For taking the piss? It's so typical of the English in general. 10,000 people get outraged, but only days after it has happened."

Gallagher added: "At worst it was a juvenile prank that wasn't unfunny but it's hardly offensive. I feel bad for Russ, 'cause he really loved doing the show. I loved being on it as well."

More of the interview with Gallagher will be broadcast Across The Line's Monday evening (November 3).

The Killers and Glasvegas were caught up in the Brand/Ross scandal, with the former having their appearance on 'Friday Night With Jonathan Ross' pulled and the latter having an appearance on 'Never Mind The Buzzcocks' shifted.

Electric Atmosphere As Oasis Begin Their Belfast Odyssey

The atmosphere was electric at the Odyssey on Wednesday night when Oasis took to the stage as part of their two night stop in Belfast.

With all their usual swagger and bravado, the Gallagher brothers delighted the crowd with a blend of songs from their new album 'Dig Out Your Soul' and much loved classics including Morning Glory and and Wonderwall.

The dedicated Belfast fans were on their feet from the moment the brothers stepped onto the stage and with frenzied excitement sang every word of every song until the band brought proceedings to an end.

The set began with the ultimate statement of what Noel and Liam have become since they first hit the charts in the 90s - 'Rock n Roll Star' and after their performance on Wednesday night there is no denying they deserve the title.

The show was everything you would expect from seasoned performers and the crowd were certainly not disappointed by these rock n roll stars.

Former Oasis Guitarist Bonehead To Play The Crane

In the mid-1990s rock was in a perilous state as manufactured groups Take That, The Spice Girls, and Boyzone dominated the charts but a group of Mancunians called Oasis were about to bring guitar-based music back.

Swaggering lead singer Liam Gallagher was like a cross between Johnny Rotten and John Lennon and his brother Noel was an expert songwriter. With Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs on guitar, Paul McGuigan on bass and Tony McCarroll on drums, their album Definitely Maybe in September 1994 became the fasting selling British debut of all time.

Bonehead is now a solo singer-songwriter and plays an acoustic show at The Crane Bar on Wednesday November 5.

Bonehead, Noel, and Liam Gallagher grew up in the predominantly Irish area of Burnage and attended local Catholic schools. Their formal education was short as from an early age they took jobs in the construction industry.

Both families had Mayo connections. Bonehead’s father Ben is from Foxford and the Gallagher’s mother Peggy is from Charlestown.

Bonehead worked as a plasterer alongside his father but by the mid 1980s he had formed his first band Pleasure And Pain. By the late 1980s he got together with Chris Hutton, Guigsy, and Tony McCarroll to form The Rain - the precursor to Oasis.

Bonehead said of the group in the 1996 Paul Mathur’s book Take Me There: Oasis The Story: “Rain were really, really sad - absolutely terrible. I had this weird long hair - bald on top - and Guigs was really fat. We did cover versions of songs like ‘Wild Thing’ and we were playing these s**t gigs round Manchester, going nowhere.

“Eventually we sacked the singer - which wasn’t exactly a smart move because none of the rest of us could sing. So we were looking for a replacement and someone said, ‘Have you heard Noel’s brother Liam? He sings a bit.’ So we got him along to an audition and he was really good. We thought ‘Right, let’s have him in the band. Maybe we can really do something.’”

Liam renamed the band Oasis and when his brother Noel was home from an American tour with Inspiral Carpets he invited him along to see the group. Noel described Oasis as “utter sh**e”! Unperturbed Liam invited Noel to come on board as main songwriter and leader of Oasis.

“He had loads of stuff written” Bonehead recalled to John Harris in 2004. “When he walked in, we were a band making a racket with four tunes. All of a sudden, there were loads of ideas.”

Under Noel Gallagher’s leadership Oasis quit their day jobs to concentrate on the group full time. At a club in Glasgow in 1993 they were ‘discovered’ by Creation Records owner Alan McGee and he was so impressed that he signed them to the label four days later. The rise of Oasis over the next 18 months was meteoric.

However, the band’s drink and drugs intake had spiralled out of control and in early 1999 the relationship between Bonehead and Noel Gallagher had broken down. That year Arthurs quit Oasis to “concentrate on other things”.

Since then he has formed a short-lived band with The Smiths’ Mike Joyce and Andy Rourke and has also toured with Thai superstar Sek Loso. He has also become a noted DJ and co-presents a show on BBC Radio Manchester with Terry Christian.

On the night Bonehead will be joined by Pete McLeod. Support is from Whipping Boy’s Ferghal McKee.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Wonderwall" is a song and subsequent single by British rock band Oasis, from their second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory? and was realeased on October 30 1995. The song, which was written by Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, is considered by many to be a defining British rock song, and regularly features in "best-of" polls.

Released in October 1995, the "Wonderwall" single peaked at #2 in the UK Singles Charts and proved to be their American breakthrough, giving Oasis their only US top 10 hit thus far. "Wonderwall" is perhaps their most popular song, despite the fact that British TV stars Robson & Jerome's "I Believe"/"Up on the Roof" kept it out of the top slot. "Wonderwall" continues to have enduring popularity in Oasis' canon; as of 2005, it was 99th in the UK's list of best-selling singles, and has now sold over a million copies in single and download sales in the UK.[

Background

The song takes its name from the 1968 album Wonderwall Music by George Harrison, at the time still a member of the Beatles. Harrison's album was in fact a soundtrack to the film Wonderwall, but the film has remained unknown by the general public.

It is often claimed that "Wonderwall" was written for Gallagher's then-girlfriend, Meg Mathews. Noel married Mathews in 1997, but divorced four years later. Gallagher now claims that the song was not about Mathews at all, but he felt he had to go along with the rumour, saying "The meaning of that song was taken away from me by the media who jumped on it. How do you tell your missus it's not about her once she's read it is? It's a song about an imaginary friend who's gonna come and save you from yourself." Noel initially wanted to sing this song on (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, but he gave his brother Liam Gallagher the choice, and Noel ended up singing "Don't Look Back in Anger".

The music video to the song was filmed in the relatively brief period when bassist Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan quit the band due to nervous exhaustion; Scott McLeod came in to replace him.

The sleeve artwork was inspired by the paintings of the Belgian surrealist René Magritte, and was shot on Primrose Hill in northwest London. The hand holding the frame is that of art director Brian Cannon; the girl is Anita Heryet, a Creation Records employee. The original idea was to have Liam in the frame before Noel vetoed that idea whilst the shoot was taking place.

The song is included on Oasis' "best-of" album Stop the Clocks.

Covers

"Wonderwall" has been one of the most-frequently covered songs in recent history; the most famous of which was an easy listening arrangement by The Mike Flowers Pops, which reached #2 in the UK Singles Charts, just as the Oasis original had done two months earlier. Gallagher mentioned that when BBC Radio 1 premiered the song, they ironically claimed that they had found "the original version of Wonderwall." Gallagher, who had been in America at the time, was surprised to be asked by one of his record company's executives if he had actually written the song.

Ryan Adams's version, first performed in 2001, and later released in 2004, was well-received by Noel Gallagher; Noel continues to perform the song in the same style as Ryan's version.

Other artists who have covered the song include American indie singer Cat Power, Richard Cheese, Great Big Sea, Paul Anka's swing-jazz style arrangement, the Beastie Boys punk rock cover that has been performed at concerts, but never released as a single, and a cover on the compilation Punk Goes 90's by the pop-punk band Cartel. The Harvard Independent compiled a list of the five most ironic versions of "Wonderwall".

The song was also covered by fellow British rock group Radiohead as a joke in the late 1990s; Thom Yorke sings many incorrect lyrics and cuts out mid-chorus when a background voice says, "Is this abysmal or what? It's always good to make fun of Oasis." Along with the group Radiohead, the up-coming band, Cartel also did a remake of this song.

During a heated rivalry between Oasis and Robbie Williams, which came about due to Noel and Liam's constantly referring to Robbie as "the fat dancer from Take That", he performed "Wonderwall" at his Slane Castle concert live on pay-per-view TV.

The verse to "Wonderwall" is built on a common four-chord progression which several other songs have also employed. These include Travis's "Writing To Reach You" (which contains the lyric "what's a Wonderwall anyway?"), "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" by Green Day, Justin Timberlake's What Goes Around...Comes Around and Oasis' first single from Be Here Now, "D'You Know What I Mean". "Wonderwall" was later featured in the popular mash up "Boulevard of Broken Songs", which also contained parts of both "Writing to Reach You" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams". In late 2006, Gallagher accused Green Day of "ripping off" "Wonderwall", saying "If you listen, you'll find it is exactly the same arrangement as Wonderwall. They should have the decency to wait until I am dead [before stealing my songs]. I, at least, pay the people I steal from that courtesy."

Matthew Newton sang a swing version of Wonderwall during his controversial appearance on The Big Night In with John Foreman on New Year's Eve 2006.

Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters has made a cover version as well.

British cover band Ten Masked Men have recorded a Death Metal rendition of the song.

American band The Fray added the chorus towards the end of its song Look After You in their live performances.

In the ABC television series Lost, British character Charlie Pace, portrayed by Dominic Monaghan, performs an acoustic sampling of "Wonderwall" in two episodes, notably the third season episode "Greatest Hits".

Australian Idol 2007 contestant Ben McKenzie performed a version mixing the Oasis original and Ryan Adams cover on Britpop night.

Awards and accolades

The promo video for "Wonderwall", directed by Nigel Dick, won the Best British Video award at the 1996 BRIT Awards.

In May 2005, "Wonderwall" was voted the best British song of all time, in a poll of over 8,500 listeners conducted by Virgin Radio.

In August 2006, Wonderwall was named the second-greatest song of all time in a poll conducted by Q Magazine, finishing behind another Oasis song, "Live Forever".

In 2006, U2's guitarist The Edge named Wonderwall one of the songs he most wishes he'd written.

In 1995, "Wonderwall" came in at number one in the national Australian music poll, the Triple J Hottest 100.

In May 2007, NME magazine placed "Wonderwall" at number 27 in its list of the 50 Greatest Indie Anthems Ever.

Other Information

The opening track of (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, "Hello", starts off with the opening riff of "Wonderwall" playing extremely quietly; this stops once the guitar noise comes in. This is similar to the tape print-through that can be heard on such songs as the Talking Heads' "Road to Nowhere."

The original title of "Wonderwall" was "Wishing Stone".

In an interview conducted in Australia around the time of the release of Be Here Now, when asked which three songs he would like to be remembered for, Noel immediately responded with "Live Forever", "Magic Pie", and "Wonderwall", and then proceeded to list several others, including "Champagne Supernova" and "Don't Look Back in Anger".

At the very end of the song, the intro to "Supersonic" can be faintly heard being played on acoustic guitar.

Russell Brand Quits Radio Show

Russell Brand has resigned from his Radio 2 show over prank calls he made with Jonathan Ross to the actor Andrew Sachs.

The comic said he took complete responsibility and that due to the strong public reaction, he thought it was only right he stopped doing the show.

He said: "I got a bit caught up in the moment and forgot that at the core of the rude comments and silly songs were the real feelings of a beloved and brilliant comic actor".

Mr Brand also lent his support to Jonathan Ross and said that he now hoped "Jonathan and the BBC will endure less forensic wrath".

He addded "I've loved working for the BBC and am very proud of the shows myself, Matt Morgan, Nic Philps, Mr Gee and Noel Gallagher have made and I apologise to all of them for damaging their careers - except Noel, whose band are doing quite well."

Injury Can't Stop Chorus Rocking With Oasis

The show must go on for the Crouch End Festival Chorus - and not even a crushed foot could stop them being rock n' roll stars.

The choir's collaboration with Britpop pioneers Oasis at the Electric Proms could have hit a bum note after a microphone stand fell on conductor David Temple during a sound check.

He said: "I have been in and out of hospital all morning having X-rays. A heavy duty stand fell on my foot but I battled on. I would never have missed it."

The 50-strong group have now hinted the closing performance at the event on Sunday could just be a taste of things to come.

"Musically it was so fantastic but also such fun. Noel is one of the most charming people I've ever worked with," he said.

"There aren't any firm plans for future collaborations but we are getting nice vibes.

"We respect each other and the choral music works well with rock music. I think of ourselves as their Wonderwall."

The Manchester five-piece revealed they wanted to play with the choir after plans for the pairing to feature on new album Dig Out Your Soul fell through.

Noel Gallagher said on BBC 6 Music: "Out of all the songs on the album there are two that didn't make it that have got a

50-piece choir. The original idea for this album was to record it with this choir in Abbey Road and for whatever reason it didn't happen.

"So when we got offered the Proms, we called them up and said 'I know we let you down but do you fancy doing a few tunes?'"

Mr Temple said they were in talks with the band over the album but it never happened after the group decided to record the album in America.

He added: "I didn't know much about Oasis when they first came out, but me and Noel chatted about his family and had a good banter about football.

"They have this reputation but from our collaboration it's just unrecognisable."

The gig saw the choir play six hits with the group including Wonderwall and Don't Look Back In Anger at the Camden Roundhouse.

Take That Take On Oasis As They Announce Stadium Tour

Are they putting something in the water in Manchester? As if the rivalry between United and City wasn't fierce enough now the local musos are at it - with Take That rattling their sabres at Oasis.

Both bands are to play their hometown next summer - and Take That reckon their concert will blow away anything the Gallagher brothers can come up with.

Chatting in the penthouse suite of London's Soho hotel, Howard told us: "There's a totally different energy to the two shows.

"We're all about the spectacle, putting on an amazing show for the fans, with lots of high energy and dancing. Oasis are great... if you just want to see a band stand still and sing.

"They have a different kind of energy."

Keeping the peace, Mark added hastily: "It's like all the boys coming home.

"I really want to go and see Oasis but if the credit crunch makes people choose one or the other, then come and see us."

Gary, Mark, Jason and Howard kick off their Circus tour in Sunderland on June 6. They will perform in Manchester mere days after Oasis have plugged in their amps there.

Tickets go on sale on Friday at 9am from www.gigsandtours.com for what they promise will be the greatest show on earth. Over to you, Noel and Liam...

Lord Don't Slow Me Down is a rockumentary film, looking back on British band Oasis' Don't Believe the Truth world tour which took place from May 2005 to March 2006. The film is directed by Baillie Walsh.

It went platinum in the UK and was released on October 29 2008.

Pre-release

A handful of fans-only private screenings took place around the world with the world premiere of the film at the Directors Guild Theater in New York City on November 4, 2006 as part of the CMJ Film Festival. The UK television premiere was on Channel 4 on November 19, at 11:50pm, although it was a heavily edited version with approximately 40 minutes cut from the original 95 minute version. The film was unveiled to coincide with Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks, released on November 20, 2006. A preview of the film was included on the Let There Be Love DVD single, released in November 2005.

The film features a new Oasis song also called "Lord Don't Slow Me Down", written by Noel Gallagher and recorded during the Don't Believe the Truth sessions, Gallagher described it as being "one of the best things, like The Who, The Yardbirds and the Jeff Beck Group combined, and it's got two drum solos on it!". He has also said that his girlfriend thought it was the only Oasis song you could dance to. The song was left off Don't Believe the Truth because Gallagher felt that including it would have meant he'd have been singing too many songs on the record. Italian footballer Alessandro Del Piero also appears in the video signing a shirt for Noel.

Dig Out Your Soul, Oasis’ seventh studio has been described as the band back in rocking form, with many claiming that the notorious brothers Gallagher have finally got their swagger back. The best received Oasis record within the last decade, it’s has been compared to their world-famous debut Definitely Maybe. What the fans really want to know is, ‘what’s changed this time around?’ Have the band taken up yoga, gone all macrobiotic or has fatherhood sharpened their pens? Funny or Die, the world’s most successful comedy web site, have created a spoof video interview of the brothers Gallagher as they explain the new influences feeding their musical mojo and talk us through the highlights of the latest album.

Watch Liam ingeniously compare songwriting to ‘making a sandwich with your face - bit of bacon, bit of cress, yellow pickle, brown pickle.....’ and get some exclusive audio snippets of the band’s new material from the sun-soaked reggae ska tune, Jamming In the Sunshine to the happy hardcore referencing, Wings Of Love. The highlight of the album has to be the ballad, Nicole, which has nothing to do with Ms Appleton but rather is the tale of Liam ‘aving it with a f***in bird, who just happens to be called Nicole and wasn’t in a band called All Saints.’ Noel ends proceedings by stating that ‘...at the end of the day, that is it,’ but leaves us hopelessly in the dark as to what exactly ‘that’ is.

Oasis Frontman Liam Gallagher Gives Seal Of Approval To Scots Chart Stars Glasvegas

Scots rockers Glasvegas have added Oasis to their ever-growing list of celebrity followers.

The band, whose high-profile fans include Lisa Marie Presley, Fran Healy and Michael Stipe, played alongside the Manchester legends at the BBC's Electric Proms on Sunday night.

And singer James Allan excitedly told how his hero Liam Gallagher turned up early to watch their soundcheck earlier in the day.

James said: "We were on stage in the afternoon going through our songs and Liam was watching it all.

"It was a strange feeling. I learned music through Oasis.

"When I was younger, seeing Oasis made me think I could do that. The first song I learned to play on guitar was Talk Tonight.

"And maybe without that we wouldn't be here."

The televised concert at London's Roundhouse was the hottest ticket in town with more than 1000 people trying to get in long after the gig had sold out.

And as Glasvegas opened the show, James Bond actor Daniel Craig and comedian Russell Brand were also spotted in the crowd.

It's been a huge year for the Glaswegian band. Their self-titled debut album shot straight to No.2 and they are preparing to re-release it with a new Christmas special CD, which includes carol Silent Night and their own song A Snowflake Fell (And It Felt Like A Kiss).

Last year, they scooped the Philip Hall Radar Award at the prestigious NME Awards, and, earlier this month, they took over a church in Transylvania and teamed up with a choir for their Christmas epics.

James said: "It was a great experience. It's a beautiful place, quite gothic and working with the choir was a new experience.

"Recording Silent Night was my idea, too. I just told the others I wanted to do it and we did."

And despite rumours that James is to quit the band, he confirmed they had a string of live dates in the diary following on from Sunday's sensational set with Oasis.

Glasvegas had prime position watching Oasis perform. They had a private area in the balcony a few feet above their heroes and saw them deliver a 90-minute set backed up by a London choir.

The 50 extra singers added power behind Liam and Noel Gallagher's voices and the finale, a cover of the Beatles' I Am The Walrus, was a the perfect conclusion to the five-night BBC music extravaganza.

Even jokes at the expense of Daniel Craig added warmth to the event. From the stage, Noel called up to the actor: "Get me the next Bond theme tune instead of dozy Americans." At the end of the night, an ecstatic James said: "The whole day has been brilliant. Watching Oasis was great and I still have to think how much everything has changed for us this year."

But he hasn't lost his sense of humour, adding: "Our rider is 10 times bigger than it was when we played a room at the Roundhouse earlier this year.

"But I know we don't get the amount Oasis have. We're Glaswegian so we plan to steal some of theirs if we run out."

Oasis Play A Blinder

Oasis

Oasis played a belting gig at the BBC Electric Proms.

Noel and Liam Gallagher, Andy Bell, Gem Archer and Chris Sharrock, backed by the Crouch End Festival Chorus, were class.

Cheeky Noel even had time between songs to negotiate a deal with 007 star Daniel Craig to play him in a biopic of his life.

Sadly though, I couldn’t see too much of the gig at Camden’s Roundhouse – the reflection from the stage lights off Chelsea star Joe Cole's fancy watch obstructed my view.

He’s a top lad, Joe, and he knew every word to the Oasis tunes, including the new stuff.

I wasn’t close enough to hear if he was singing in key.

Always professional, Joe slipped home early to be fresh for training yesterday, missing an epic post-gig Sunday night tear-up.

Held at Camden’s Proud Galleries, the party was a star-studded affair – Russell Rrand, Ed Simons of The Chemical Brothers, radio’s Chris Moyles and actor Ralf Little all soaked up the atmosphere with Noel.

I’m betting that they all spent most of yesterday soaking up headache tablets.

Oasis Feeling Thematic, Kinks-y On New Songs

Oasis' latest album, "Dig Out Your Soul," has only been out three weeks, but Noel Gallagher says he's "already written" and demoed the group's follow-up.

Gallagher tells Billboard.com that he started writing the songs while mixing "Dig Out Your Soul" in Los Angeles. The "psychedelic epics" "I Want to Live in a Dream in My Record Machine" and "Come On It's Alright," on which he hopes to use a choir -- were in place for the current album but put aside when Gallagher's brother, Oasis frontman Liam, "ran out of time" to record them.

Noel compares the new material to "mid-era Kinks," referencing songs such as "Dead End Street" and "Harry Rag." "They all seem to be based around the same four or five chords," Gallagher says. "It's vastly different from what ('Dig Out Your Soul') is."

There's also a thematic unity that he likens to Neil Young's "Greendale." "It's kind of like that, but modern," Gallagher says. "There's stuff about soldiers and religious people and rock stars and travelers. They seem to be all songs about people, but not people I know. And they all seem to have a narrative; it's kind of like a story which follows on from song to song."

With a tour underway -- and a North American leg starting Dec. 3 in Oakland, Calif. -- Gallagher won't predict when we'll ultimately hear this new music, however. "This tour's gonna take us to the end of next year," he says, "and then it depends on what everybody wants to do. I think it'll happen when it's meant to happen. We just work on our own timetable."

Gallagher, who's almost fully recovered from injuries suffered in an onstage assault Sept. 7 in Toronto, is also still planning to make a solo album but isn't sure where that will fit in the timetable, either. "I'm going to do one sooner or later -- hopefully sooner rather than later," he says. "I'm kind of hoping Liam might be arrested soon, and then I'll have time to see it through."
