Pub That Will Be An Oasis For Thirsty Pop Fans

What's the story, morning glory? A Burnage pub is being turned into a trendy tribute bar dedicated to local wild rock and roll band Oasis.

The Farmers Arms, closed since earlier this year, has been snapped up by a neighbouring Irish dynasty which will feature a lounge dedicated to bad boys Liam and Noel Gallagher – in the hope they may visit for a nice peaceful Sunday lunch.

Its new owners, the well-established Levenshulme Pub Company that already has a strong community anchor in Levenshulme, has promised a whole range of family entertainment, live screening of premier football matches and horse-racing – and exciting job opportunities.

LPC boss Lawrence Hennigan, 51, is already urging local talent with get up-and-go to contact him with ideas of how to run the pub and even put themselves forward to work there.

Lawrence, who began his family business with wife Kath 25 years ago, pledged he would be committed to providing a "good old fashioned" pub similar to those he currently owns and runs in Levenshulme, plus work opportunities at a time of high unemployment.

"During this economic downturn when a pub is being closed each day we are determined to buck the recession and are expanding into Burnage," he said.

"We are looking to repeat the successful blueprint of our community pubs in Levenshulme which are at the hub of the community in the area."

He added: "We were one of the first pub companies in Manchester to introduce the live screening of premiership matches through Sky and have always been at the forefront of promoting contemporary and traditional Irish culture in the city."

And in a bid to attract an exciting new team, he said: "We are seeking a young and ambitious management team with lots of energy and enthusiasm to drive the community pub forward.

"Good old fashioned community pubs still have an important part to play in society and we hope to keep that going in Burnage.

"It is important that companies do their bit in the recession in providing local employment for local people and that the local community then do their bit in supporting local businesses."

Lawrence said the Farmers Arms – a brick built pub with its own eighteenth century stables located on cobbles next to the listed St Margaret’s Church and close to St Bernard’s RC Church which is twinned with St Mary’s Parish Church in Levenshulme – would be turned into a family orientated establishment.

"The area has a massive Irish community second only to Levenshulme. The pub is in a lovely spot and close to two churches so we already know a lot of our potential customers.

"We want to turn it into a real community pub with pub sports such as darts and the live screening of horse-racing and football, just like our other bars in Levenshulme.

"Part of it will be devoted to the Irish community along with a special lounge dedicated to the local super group Oasis."

Entrepreneur Lawrence is already planning a massive Irish music weekend and Oasisfest to launch the venue which will be raising money for local charities.

Anyone interested in managing the pub or working there or with an idea or two should email Lawrence at info@levenshulme.com or ring him on 07771782104.

Noel Gallagher: 'Sharing Spliff With Mani Gave Me Faith In The Stone Roses'

Oasis man tells NME about his time in illegal Madchester club The Kitchen

Noel Gallagher has told NME how he once found himself partying with The Stone Roses bassist Mani at legendary Manchester squat-club The Kitchen.

Speaking to NME for this week's (April 18) cover feature, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of The Stone Roses' iconic debut album, Gallagher reminisced about what it was like living in Manchester in 1989, with The Stone Roses and the Madchester scene at its most potent.

Although The Hacienda is commonly acknowledged as being at the epicentre of the iconic scene, Gallagher explained that Hulme's Kitchen club was where the real fun was to be had.

"After The Hacienda we would go to the Kitchen parties in Hulme and we used to play the Roses' album on the journey every time," he said.

Situated in a police no-go zone on a notorious Hulme council estate, the dimly-lit Kitchen was made from three box flats that had been knocked into one space with pick axes.

"The Kitchen was this sort of homemade club that was pitch black inside," continued Gallagher, who also revealed that every now and then he'd bump into some of Manchester's most famous faces at the illegal parties.

"I remember one night I was passing a spliff to this guy all night and when the sun came up, I saw it was Mani and I thought, 'wow!' This guy, who was widely regarded as being in the biggest band in the country, was at an illegal house party at 7am dressing like me. That gave me so much faith in them [The Stone Roses]."

Gallagher also gives his opinion on The Stone Roses' classic debut album in the article, saying the 1989 release came out with "unbelievable timing".

You can read the full article on The Stone Roses, featuring the likes of Gallagher, Mani, Richard Ashcroft and Kaiser Chiefs' Nick Hodgson in this week's special 20th anniversary collectors' edition of NME, out now (April 15).

The magazine also features an exclusive replica of NME's legendary 1989 Stone Roses cover, which sees the band covered in paint (pictured above right). Both Liam Gallagher and Ashcroft selected the iconic Kevin Cummins' shot (originally dated November 18, 1989) as their favourite NME cover of all time.

TalkSport Confirms Russell Brand And Noel Gallagher Show

EDIT: I will find the correct time for this, as I have heard mixed reports of it being 9PM and TalkSport have not yet updated the schedule for Sunday.

TalkSport has confirmed that Russell Brand will make a return to radio with a new football show co-hosted with Noel Gallagher.

Brand, who quit BBC Radio 2 last October following the 'Sachsgate' scandal, will initially appear in a one-off show with Gallagher, entitled Brand and Gallagher, on Sunday 19 April from 9am-11am (UK).

The duo will tackle some of the biggest football stories of the season so far from both on and off the pitch, while adding their own irreverent twist to the latest team news, results and fixtures.

TalkSport programme director Moz Dee said: "TalkSport welcomes Russell back to radio. He's a unique talent who understands the medium brilliantly, and together with Noel Gallagher, it'll be a must listen. Both are proper football fans who just happen to be two of the most creative minds in popular culture."

Dee added that he hoped to secure the duo on a more regular basis.

Brand and Gallagher first struck up and on-air comradeship on Brand's award-winning Saturday Night Show on BBC Radio 2 in 2007, when Brand tracked down the Oasis guitarist by phone for almost every episode.

The show ran for over two years with each episode attracting around 300,000 listeners.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"The Hindu Times" is a song by English rock group Oasis, and was the first single to be released from their fifth album Heathen Chemistry on 15 April 2002. It was written by Noel Gallagher. Noel got the name "The Hindu Times" from a t-shirt he saw in a charity shop. The song was the band's sixth UK #1 single, staying on top for one week before being dislodged by the Sugababes' "Freak Like Me".

The title has little to do with the lyrics of the song, which are more in the vein of Definitely Maybe's "Rock 'n' Roll Star". It has been speculated that the title refers to the main riffs' similarity to Indian music in sound, sounding as if they were played on a sitar. Gallagher himself says that it is because he had already named the song before any lyrics were written for it.

The song, which combines the powerful fast rock of their earlier work with the psychedelic feel of their later work, was one of the first Oasis singles since (What's the Story) Morning Glory to receive almost unanimously positive reviews from the critics. However, some fans have criticised the song, stating that the main guitar riff was lifted from the Stereophonics song, "Same Size Feet", which was released in 1997 on their Word Gets Around album and uses the exact same, or at least very similar, guitar riff.

The song was unveiled during Oasis' Autumn 2001 Noise and Confusion Tour. The song was due to be released commercially at the same time but Noel decided the track needed more work done on it to be suitable for release.

The B-side, "Just Getting Older", was written at the time of the release of Standing on the Shoulder of Giants.

"The Hindu Times" - 3:53
"The Hindu Times" (demo) - 4:32
10 Minutes Of Noise And Confusion - Pt One - 9:26

The demo version of The Hindu Times is radically different from the finished album version. Most of the lyrics (sung by Noel) are different, and the slower sound of the song is much more "grungy", with a heavy drum loop running throughout the song. It is also a semitone higher in the demo.

The "10 Minutes..." documentary is the first part of a unique feature covering 48 hours on the road with Oasis during the Tour of Brotherly Love which took place in the USA with the Black Crowes during May and June 2001

‘Eye oop. Made it to Cape Town. What a place! Far less shady than Jo'burg. Beautiful weather.

Real old-school hotel. Table Mountain is virtually outside my bedroom window. It's right THERE!! Amazing.

Great to see everyone from Team NG. Irie Nancy, The Mighty I and Ganga Wailer all present and correct and in good spirits.

Had a trip to Boulder Beach yesterday to see some penguins. Funny little fellas. Not my bag, you understand. It's all about the kids, see?

City lost again yesterday. Utter shite. I feel for the manager. Think he'll go in the summer. Hope not. But I think he will.

Not much else to report. I'm off to get some rays before tonight's gig. It's the last one before a 2 week break. Thank god.

Noel Gallagher Develops Blog Addiction

He's never been known the most techno-savvy of rock stars. Hell, he doesn't even have a computer. But Oasis's Noel Gallagher has revealed he has developed an addiction to blogging.

The guitarist told Q it staves off the boredom of hotel rooms while he is on tour as he posts his regular blogs by texting them through his mobile phone.

He explained: “Emma (Greengrass) who runs our label, said 'We’re going to have to do something because every band in the entire history of rock now has a presence on the web, but you lot don’t do anything'. Someone said 'what about a blog'? I immediately hate that word. Blog.

"I was saying 'I haven’t got a computer so how am I going to do it'? Emma said I could write stuff down and someone else could email it, but that takes out all the fun. In the end I decided that I was going to text. And after about a week I was thinking, I quite like this, blogging. So I do it on the mobile phone.

“It was great until just before Christmas time when I met someone in London who’d read them all. I was in the queue at HMV to buy some Nintendo games for my little girl. The guy in the queue was telling me stuff about what I’d been doing. I was like, 'how do you know that'? ‘Read all your blogs, mate, f***ing hilarious'.

"Until that point I’d convinced myself that nobody read it. But as soon as he said that I thought I’ve got to stop doing this, it’s really embarrassing. But I can’t. It’s sort of addictive. And it’s something do in boring European hotel rooms.”

End Of The Road For Johnny

Manc music legend Johnny Roadhouse has passed away, aged 88. The man is responsible for some of the best bands to come out of North-west England.

He was the guy who put a guitar in the hands of almost every rock ’n’ roll band to come out of Manchester.

Johnny owned a famous music store in the city’s Oxford Road and was a pal of Sir Paul McCartney, The Smiths and Oasis.

Ex-Smiths drummer Mike Joyce said: “Every band in Manchester has gone through Johnny Roadhouse’s music store at some stage.”

The saxophonist, who once worked with Elton John, also sorted Oasis’s Noel and Liam Gallagher with their first guitars. As a tribute to Johnny, in 2006 the band featured Johnny’s shop in the vid for track The Masterplan.

Meanwhile, Noel, on tour in South Africa, has paid homage to the role alcohol played in one of his biggest hits.

He said: “Wonderwall is an album by George Harrison so I nicked the title from that, I nicked the chords from somewhere else and a few of the words. I was probably drunk.”

When asked why he went into music he said: “I wanted to be rich.”

He achieved his goal — unlike his beloved Man City, who put me off my Easter eggs on Sunday with a dire game against Fulham...

Liam Gallagher ‘I’m A Little Wiser, A Little Calmer’

Liam Gallagher’s handshake was firm. He didn’t get up from his seat when I met him inside a function room of the Singapore Indoor Stadium two hours before he goes up onstage.

With his new buzz cut, the creases on his face and the film of wisdom in his eyes, the irrepressible and irreverent front man of rock super group Oasis was looking far less intimidating than in years past, when his wild and often violent ways made headlines around the world. I had no idea what to expect when I was told I would be getting the opportunity to interview one of the most unpredictable and irascible personalities in modern music. I could only hope he would be in one of his better moods.

“We all got a little bit wiser, a little bit calmer, “ he said in his thick Manchester accent, in answer to a question on the difference between Oasis in 1995 and 2009. “There’s not a lot of drugs knocking around,” he deadpanned, drawing chuckles from the small group of journalists from all over Asia. Oasis played a show at the Lion City as part of their tour to promote their latest album, Dig Out Your Soul.

Keeping things fresh

The band is known for performing almost the exact same set list in every leg of their tour, so I asked Liam how they managed to keep things fresh after doing the same thing night after night. His response was typical Liam—to-the-point and expletive-laden. “I don’t really keep things fresh. We just go there and do our thing, innit? We don’t change the set list. It’s the same old f****n’ thing. That’s how we keep things fresh, by not keeping them fresh.”

Many artists and bands have expressed their admiration for the band by covering their songs, including popular alternative-country act Ryan Adams, who did “Wonderwall.” But apparently, this doesn’t sit well with Gallagher. “I don’t like that. That version was too f****n’ pansy. Chris Martin did ‘Songbird’ once and I told him, don’t ever f***n’ sing that song.”

Has he ever liked anybody else’s version of any of their songs?

“Hmm . . . No. I heard the Foo Fighters do ‘Lyla’ once. It sounded like the song was being f***ing murdered.”

But Gallagher does have a soft spot for at least a couple of bands out there. “The only one band that I consider any good at the moment is Kasabian. They look good, the music’s great, they’ve got soul, and they’re f***in’ mad live. They’re really great performers. The Arctic Monkeys are all right, but not as good as Kasabian. They’re the best band around . . .” He pauses a moment before adding, “Well, second best band.” But of course.

Something different

Someone asked Gallagher about the new album and without hesitating, he said, “I don’t know if there’s anything special in it. It’s just a good album. I dunno if there’s anything special. It’s just a good piece of music. The sound is good.” The journalist presses Gallagher about Dig Out Your Soul, particularly about its cover art, but Gallagher is clueless. “What does it mean? I dunno. Who did it? I dunno who made it . . . but I like it.”

Apart from music and touring, Liam is also busy these days with the clothing line he recently launched called Pretty Green. Yes, the rock and roll star is also into fashion. “I just wanted to do something different. d’you know what I mean? When we finish this tour, I don’t want to be stuck at home twiddling my thumbs waiting for Noel’s f***in’ instructions. I think clothes are equally important as the music. There’s no point in writing good songs if you look like a f***in’ idiot. So you’ve got to dress cool. You’ve got to write cool songs. If people like it, they like it. If they don’t, they don’t. They don’t have to buy it.”

Twitter addict

Gallagher, who once said he wasn’t into all the techy stuff said he now uses the social networking application Twitter. “I’m kind of enjoying it. You can get [feedback] direct from people. So if someone is saying shit about you, you can sort of quash the rumors right away.”

The rock star, who married All Saints member Nicole Appleton and has three kids, said that absent all the hoopla surrounding him and Oasis, he lives a pretty normal life back in England. “[When we’re on tour, I miss] the routine of everyday life. I do like just getting up, sending the kids to school, going to the park. Just normal things, like going for a drink.”

“Although I don’t drink that much,” he was quick to add.

Misconception

Throughout the interview, I was on edge, half-waiting for Gallagher to suddenly throw one of his infamous fits or perhaps even throw a punch if he didn’t like a question. But it never happened. Instead, he was a breezy subject, candid and forthright, polite even. But he didn’t mince words either. I asked him what he thought the biggest misconception was about him, given his extremely colorful and eventful life. “I dunno man. If people f***in’ piss me off then I can be a c**t. D’you know what I mean? But if people are cool, then I’m cool with them. Then obviously the people who write shit about me are obviously c**ts and I piss them off. So there you go. I don’t care what people think. That’s none of my business.”

Perhaps it was because Gallagher wasn’t turning out to be the arrogant, self-involved rockstar everyone thought he was that other journalists became more daring in their questions. Asked why he was so critical of other bands, and Liam patiently replied: “I’m not critical of anyone. People ask me a question, ‘Do I like their music?’ Then I’ll say no. But say I like lots of other bands—they never write about that. They always write about the ones I f***in’ don’t like. And it’s my right to not like them. It’s my opinion. It’s not like I ask for a [press] conference just to shoot some guns off. I go about my business. Somebody asks me what I think about Franz Ferdinand, and I f***in’ tell them they’re shit. That’s what it is. I don’t want them to die of a car crash or a paper cut or something. I just don’t like their music. They’re not my music. I hate shitty music.”

He’s still a hell raiser. That much is certain. But a far tamer and less rowdy version. The 38-year-old rock star, who used to figure in brawls and butt heads with almost everyone he came across with (even his own brother, band mate Noel), may have mellowed down considerably. But the attitude and spunk are still there, hidden behind his light blue eyes and assault of one-liners and expletives. And to music’s great credit, it looks like we’ll still be on the receiving end of Oasis’s onslaught for years to come. “As long as we enjoy it—and we obviously enjoy it—there’ll still be Oasis. I’m not doing it for the money, although that’s nice. But definitely, I’m doing it because I like it, and that’s where I get my kicks from, going onstage singing songs, making people happy, d’you know what i mean? So I’d do it forever. The Rolling Stones are still at it. What’s the point of splitting up if you’re enjoying it? Just so you can say, ‘Hey man, we split up?’ Whoopee.”

Noel Gallagher Interview From Hong Kong Magazine

With Dig Out Your Soul the critics in general have said your music has changed.

N: Well, critics are always inventing new languages aren't they? For me, I speak a totally different language and I only write songs that I like myself. I'm not a person for change - I play the guitar and do rock music, and I'm not into jazz, heavey metal, reggae, R&B, hip-hop and I'm not gonna write an opera about monkeys. At the end of the day, what critics say doesn't affect me. I ain't gonna change.

There're a few Liam's tunes on the album - do you like his music?

N: I like Liam's songs. The best part in his entire character is music. The rest of him is a fxxking nightmare! But his music is great. I'd listen to it.

Half of the songs on this album weren't written by you (Noel corrects: "You could have said 'you wrote half the album by yourself!'"), would the next Oasis album be like that as well?

N: Yeah, I'd like that. But it's the producer who decides what songs go in there and what not. If he says seven of my songs make it, then seven it would be.

Ever considered letting Andy and Gem do vocals?

N: What, asking them to sing? That'd be taking the piss! Andy and Gem are great musicians. In fact Gem sings well but they're not born-to-be-singers. I just think they don't have enough of that confidence in them still.

What would break up Oasis? Sibling rivalry doesn't seem like it.

N: I don't know? Getting bald, fat, someone dies or I get bored? I don't see Oasis splitting up to be honest...just the gap between albums might get longer, cos we need to save up a lot of energy for each release. I'd say we still have another 15 years in us. I don't see anyone wanting to retire either. We like our music, so I think Oasis will keep going.

Can you sum up Oasis' music in one word?

N: No I don't think you can ever do that man, not even in one sentence. I could say "Rock n' Roll" but...I think we're one of the only two real bands left on this planet. U2 doesn't do some type of music, they do U2 music, and we're like that, we'd only do Oasis music. But if I have to describe Oasis music in one word, it would be "brilliant"!

You said you won't write pop songs with catchy melodies anymore.

N: No I didn't say that. What I meant was I don't give a shit about the charts anymore. I used to be obsessed with the charts, but then I found out I don't care any longer. Once you've been at no.1 it just gets boring. Like when we signed to Sony years ago I thought we were gonna be the greatest band in the world, but ever since that contract is finished, I no longer cared about sales or chart positions. I just need to make music that I like.

Have you thought about producing records for other people, like Bernard Butler does?

N: I have produced several records but nothing came of of that...I'd still want to produce records for bands that I like though, like Coldplay. They've got their own stuff and I've seen them live many times. They're brilliant. (Anyone in particular you'd want to work with then?) No...my ambition stays inside Oasis. I wouldn't find myself saying "Hey, you know what?! I'd LOVE to work with 50 Cent!!". Nah...my hands are full with Oasis already.

Any plans for a solo record?

N: No I don't have plans for that right now, no. Everyone's writing songs at Oasis and we're sitting on a pile of like 30 songs with some great b-sides that we haven't yet put out...I wonder they'll ever get done actually, may be a fxxking double record after I die or something!

I did have that idea before, so it's not entirely out of the question. I'll see how it goes. Just get the bloody tour done first.

Do you still buy music?

N: Yeah I'd still go to a record shop to buy music. I wouldn't change that cos I don't have a computer. I know people out there are against downloading and stuff...but that's unfortunately just the way it is. I was trying to get into it before and thought about buying a computer... (You still don't own one?) No, never have, you know? I have an iPod, but that you can put it in your pocket and fxxking carry it around. For God's sake, I've spent 11 years learning to use my mobile!

So...at 41, having spent 15 years as a rock star without a computer...I don't think I'd start needing one now. It's the same with cars, I've never bought a car (yeah right, Noel), I can't swim and I can't use chopsticks! But you know, there's always a fork around right?!

How do you blog if you don't have a computer?

N: I do it with my mobile and someone at the office helps out. I just text them and they'll put it on the computer for me.

Any serious after effects from the Toronto attack?

N: No. The only thing that's changed is we don't let people on stage anymore. The security is gonna get you. It didn't really affect me though...physically I'd still feel the pain...afterall I spent 8 weeks recovering from that...and I do feel a bit intimidated every time I come on stage. But you know...(getting pushed) it beats being in a plane crash, you know what I mean?

About the cancelled gigs in Beijing and Shanghai. They were supposedly cancelled because of what you said about Tibet (Noel: yeah it saved us a whole week), have you learnt any lessons on that?

N: No. The Chinese government is not happy with something I said like 12 years ago, but I don't remember fxxk all about anything I said 12 years ago! Now obviously, communists have long memories. Anyway, not letting us play there is some sort of an insult to me. I've never been to China! But you know, whatever, that's the way world politics is, you're just some guy playing music on this world and you get involved with it. No I haven't learnt any lessons, may be not to get involved with monks!

Do you have any opinions towards Tibet?

N: Absolutely not!

Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere

Taken from Noel's tour diary for oasisinet.com

Well that was a bit weird. The Coke-Fest. Not sure what to make of it. Strange crowd. It seemed to be made up of every conceivable type of person imaginable. Very quiet. Some of them unfurled a huge banner that said, "NOEL'S PISS IS THE CURE FOR CANCER"!!??

We were on after Snow Patrol. Gotta say, I was staggered at the amount of gear they have onstage. And it all seemed to be working! We must've sounded like Buddy Holly's backing band by comparison.

Leaving for Cape Town in a bit. Meeting up with the rest of Team Gallagher. They're on board for the rest of this bit of tour. Can't wait.

In a bit.

GD.

PS. That thing about my piss has NOT been proven.
