David Beckham On Oasis, The Stone Roses And Manchester

David Beckham has said that he had to keep his love of Oasis a secret while at Manchester United because it was 'frowned upon' as the majority of the band supported Manchester City.

He told SoccerBible “I used to go to the odd Oasis gig even though it was frowned upon them being City fans and me being a United fan and a United player. But being in Manchester in the nineties, it was just part of the culture.”

He added that he regularly meets up with Noel Gallagher, as well as members of The Stone Roses.

“I loved those bands, but as soon as we’re together all we talk about is football and it’s the first thing they want to talk about. I sit with Noel and all he wants to talk about is how crap United were and how great City are. Same with Browny and a couple of the other guys. Mani is such a massive United fan. He loves a chat. He doesn’t struggle with words. All he ever wants to talk about is the youth team, reserve team, ‘99’.”

“The nineties were such a massive moment for Manchester culture, and that’s when I discovered how much I loved the music.”

Liam Gallagher Forms Supergroup With The Who's Roger Daltrey

Liam Gallagher and The Who frontman Roger Daltrey are forming a supergroup for the upcoming TFI Friday comeback episode.

TFI Friday will return for a one-off live special at 9pm next Friday (June 12), hosted by Chris Evans.

A TFI spokesman has confirmed to NME that Gallagher and Daltrey will perform 'My Generation' as part of a supergroup featuring The Lightning Seeds' Ian Broudie and former Oasis drummer (and Ringo Starr's son) Zak Starkey.

"Liam's got a bit of time on his hands since Beady Eye called it a day last year so he fancied trying his hand at something new," a 'source' also told The Sun. "He's told his mates he's pretty bored. Other than Noel, you would be hard pushed to find a better set of bandmates than Roger, Ian and Zak. It's a proper supergroup and the performance will be something to remember."

The yet-unnamed will be joined by fellow musical guests Blur, Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist Mani, Rudimental and Years & Years. It's not yet known whether the Gallagher-Daltrey-Broudie-Starkey supergroup will play any further shows following the TFI Friday performance.

Meanwhile, Liam Gallagher has discussed his recent involvement in a charity football match in Italy. Gallagher appeared alongside a number of former Juventus players like Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedved at the Juventus Stadium in Torino on Tuesday night (June 2). The match was organised by the Italian equivalent of Soccer Aid.

Speaking about the event, Gallagher has since said: "The invitation to take part came from an old friend of mine Andrea Dulio who used to work for Sony Italy whom I knew throughout the Oasis era."

Gallagher added: "I’ve played a few in my time with the mighty Oasis but never football. I must say I was a little nervous in front of 45,000 crazy Italians... I’m not sure what was said at half time as I was on the piss around that time as I was substituted 20 minutes into the game much to my delight as I was fucked," Gallagher told The Secret Footballer. "I do run most days but I haven’t had a proper kickabout since 1999."

Noel Gallagher Says Kids Only Recognise Me From Gogglebox

Noel Gallagher has revealed that kids still stop him on the street for his photograph - even though some have no idea who he is.

Talking to the XFM Breakfast Show with Tim Cocker, the legend said he'd been out for a curry with Mani of Primal Scream and the Stone Roses when they noticed a gaggle of kids outside the window, staring in.

"A crowd of kids had gathered," said Noel, "watching us have a curry, about 11 or 12 kids."

Encouraged by the owner of the restaurant, Noel went outside to pose for a photo with the excited kids.

"I was kind of stood there and this girl's going 'Oh my God! Oh my God!' And I heard her whisper to her mate, "Who is it?"

It turned out that Noel's face was familiar to the girl, but not from his record-breaking stint with Oasis or even his more recent solo success. She recognised him from his recent reality TV stint.

Noel revealed: "Her mate said 'He's off Gogglebox'. And she went: 'Are you off Gogglebox?'"

Ever the diplomat, a surprised Noel kept this cool. "I went 'amongst other things, yes'".

Gallery: Noel Gallagher And Stone Roses Legend Mani Enjoy A Night Out In Manchester

They sit on opposite sides of the Manchester footballing divide, but rock stars Mani and Noel Gallagher put those allegiances to one side to team up for a night out in the city.

Stone Roses legend Mani, a lifelong Manchester United fan, and ex-Oasis star Noel a dyed-in-the-wool City fan, headed to celeb-haunt Italian restaurant San Carlo with a group of pals on Friday night.

And they even dressed accordingly - with Noel in a blue bomber jacket and Mani in a red-lined puffa jacket.

Fans rushed to meet the stars as they headed out of the King Street West eatery late on Friday, where they posed for a few obligatory selfies.

The two stars were obviously not bored of each others company as they met again on Saturday afternoon at the same restaurant, this time just for a brief chat.

Liam Gallagher And The Stone Roses Fall Out

Liam Gallagher has fallen out with his idols The Stone Roses after an “ugly incident” between the two camps.

The Beady Eye singer has been the Manchester heroes’ No1 fan since Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani and Reni got back together last year.

But things took a turn for the worse after the former Oasis frontman overstayed his welcome during their tour then overstepped the mark by shooting his mouth off in their company.

A source close to both camps said: “It’s all gone a bit sour recently with Liam and The Roses. There was an ugly incident in Dubai when Liam said a few things that were totally out of order. It didn’t go down well at all.

“Ian, John and Reni are all low-profile lads and don’t subscribe to aggro of any sort.

“They were also getting a little bit p***ed off with him ballooning on the side of the stage every time they played a gig. He had to be escorted off at one show and put behind the mixing desk because he was making such a scene.

“He was then slung out of there for spilling beer on the desk.

“He was generally being a bit of a nob — and The Roses can’t be ar*ed with the panto-mime.”

Liam was ever-present during The Roses’ amazing shows last year.

He went to their first gig in 16 years when they played Parr Hall in Warrington. Beady Eye, who have a new album out soon, also supported Liam’s idols at Heaton Park in front of a huge home crowd last summer.

But, as is so often the case, it has all gone pear-shaped with a bit too much of the Liam cliché.

He has a cameo in The Roses’ documentary Shane Meadows is releasing this summer — which the band might have regrets about now. Or is it all just part of a timely masterplan to promote new Beady Eye single Flick Of The Finger?

Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown And Dizzee Rascal Have An All-Night Rock’N’Roll Tear-Up

Noel Gallagher celebrated his 100th solo gig in classic fashion — with an all-night rock’n’roll tear-up.

The High Flying Bird was joined by two Stone Roses, a Buzzcock and Dizzee Rascal to mark the occasion backstage at Benicassim.

But Dizzee kept putting his foot in it all night, by calling the former Oasis star “Liam” by mistake.

A source backstage said: “Noel was on top form — it was his first chance to have a night out with the Roses.

“Ian Brown was doing magic tricks for the lads, including bandmate Mani.

“Noel was going to knock Dizzee’s baseball cap off to make his point.

“It was quite a collection of hardened drinkers — Buzzcocks’ Steve Diggle is a punk legend.”

Noel partied until 8.30am — then had to catch a flight to London as he plays a huge Edinburgh Castle gig tomorrow.

The Stone Roses dedicated I Am The Resurrection to their “friend Noel Gallagher” during their brilliant headline slot at the huge Spanish festival.

Noel had played the best gig of his tour to a sunburnt, hammered crowd.

Earlier he poked fun at bassist Mani for being knocked back in his hotel at breakfast for wearing sandals. Speaking on my Xfm show, he said: “No wonder — he’s got feet like Wurzel Gummidge.”

Noel was braced to step in for headliners The Roses who nearly missed it after their private jet broke down in Portugal.

Noel added: “The elastic band on the propeller for their jet has gone. I told Mani he only needs to ask if he wants to borrow my Learjet.”

He said he’s seen Bono and is up for playing during U2’s next world tour.

And he announced he’ll play an exclusive and rare acoustic gig with Xfm and WarChild at Dingwalls in London on August 14.

You won’t see Noel in a venue that size very often again — for tickets see noelgallagher.com or Xfm.co.uk.

Dizzee, Steve and The Roses are welcome to come along for round two.

Noel Gallagher Refuses To Play At Festival At The Same Time As The Stone Roses

Noel Gallagher has revealed that he refused to play at a festival at the same time as the Stone Roses.

The singer is on tour in America when the band play their reunion shows at Heaton Park later this year.

Speaking to the MEN newspaper, Gallagher said that when he found out he'd be on the bill at an as-yet-to-be-announced summer festival with the Roses, he told organisers his set would have to be shifted so he can watch the band.

“I was billed at these festivals to headline another stage and I said, 'Well I'm not going on while the Roses are on', do you know what I mean? They've not done a gig for 100 years, what am I going to do? Play to two f*cking dogs and a cat and two stewards? Five Oasis fans shouting for Wonderwall?

"So I said I'd go on before them, and there's a bit of the promoters going: 'Oh, f*cking hell'. So I said, 'It's either that or I won't do it'. Cos I want to see them, do you know what I mean? I don't want to be the only person in England who hasn't seen them - 'I was in the same room as them... never actually got to f*cking see them'."

As previously reported on Gigwise, The Stone Roses have signed two record deals ahead of their reunion shows.

Universal Records have signed the band in the UK and worldwide, while Columbia, owned by Sony, have contracted the band in the US.

Ian Brown revealed that The Stone Roses have recorded new songs during rehearsals for their live shows.

The move is set to make the band millions, after Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani and Reni announced details of three homecoming shows at Manchester's Heaton Park in June, with further festivals appearances at V, T In The Park and Spain's Benicassim.

Noel Gallagher Was Nervous About His First Live Shows

Noel Gallagher admits he had to ''fly by the seat of his pants'' at his debut High Flying Birds show in Dublin, Ireland.

Noel Gallagher admits he had to "fly by the seat of his pants" at his debut High Flying Birds show.

The 'If I Had a Gun' singer was nervous about his first ever concert as a solo artist in Dublin, Ireland, as it was a very different experience playing in a smaller venue to the stadiums he had become used to with his old band, Oasis.

He told BBC Radio 1's Zane Lowe: "The first show was fly by the seat of your pants and I'd not played anywhere that small for a while, I used to rehearse in bigger rooms than that.

"And it's got better. To start off in England was quite mad, because the crowds are crazy over here, then we went to America where they are a bit more reserved, so I got into it a bit more, I'm enjoying it."

While 'The Death of You and Me' hitmaker played down rumours he will support reformed band The Stone Roses this summer, he is happy they have finally got back together for the first time since 1996.

He said: "I know they've been rehearsing and I've spoke to a couple of people who have been in rehearsal who have said it sounds amazing, but I'm just really made up for them that they have finally did it.

"It's great to see [guitarist] John [Squire] and [singer] Ian [Brown] on stage already, and great that [bass player] Mani will eventually shut up about not making any money. All he's done for the last 15 years has been, 'Did you know we got robbed in the Roses'."

Mani To Join Noel Gallagher At TCT Gigs

Just to let you know that Noel Gallagher was on talkSPORT yesterday with Andy Goldstein and ex-Arsenal player, Ray Parlour.

Mani had been on earlier and confirmed that he will be playing with Noel at the TCT gigs later this month.

The vast majority of Noel's chat was about football, but he also spoke about being drunk onstage, saying he had only done it about half a dozen times, with one in particular standing out as they had all been up for a couple of days and he wasn't sure he would get through the gig, that he will be rehearsing next week for the TCT gigs and that he had just been watching Come Dine With Me!

As soon the interview is on the talkSport website, I will put a link here.

Noel Gallagher: 'Sharing Spliff With Mani Gave Me Faith In The Stone Roses'

Oasis man tells NME about his time in illegal Madchester club The Kitchen

Noel Gallagher has told NME how he once found himself partying with The Stone Roses bassist Mani at legendary Manchester squat-club The Kitchen.

Speaking to NME for this week's (April 18) cover feature, which celebrates the 20th anniversary of The Stone Roses' iconic debut album, Gallagher reminisced about what it was like living in Manchester in 1989, with The Stone Roses and the Madchester scene at its most potent.

Although The Hacienda is commonly acknowledged as being at the epicentre of the iconic scene, Gallagher explained that Hulme's Kitchen club was where the real fun was to be had.

"After The Hacienda we would go to the Kitchen parties in Hulme and we used to play the Roses' album on the journey every time," he said.

Situated in a police no-go zone on a notorious Hulme council estate, the dimly-lit Kitchen was made from three box flats that had been knocked into one space with pick axes.

"The Kitchen was this sort of homemade club that was pitch black inside," continued Gallagher, who also revealed that every now and then he'd bump into some of Manchester's most famous faces at the illegal parties.

"I remember one night I was passing a spliff to this guy all night and when the sun came up, I saw it was Mani and I thought, 'wow!' This guy, who was widely regarded as being in the biggest band in the country, was at an illegal house party at 7am dressing like me. That gave me so much faith in them [The Stone Roses]."

Gallagher also gives his opinion on The Stone Roses' classic debut album in the article, saying the 1989 release came out with "unbelievable timing".

You can read the full article on The Stone Roses, featuring the likes of Gallagher, Mani, Richard Ashcroft and Kaiser Chiefs' Nick Hodgson in this week's special 20th anniversary collectors' edition of NME, out now (April 15).

The magazine also features an exclusive replica of NME's legendary 1989 Stone Roses cover, which sees the band covered in paint (pictured above right). Both Liam Gallagher and Ashcroft selected the iconic Kevin Cummins' shot (originally dated November 18, 1989) as their favourite NME cover of all time.
