The Other Gallagher Brother Will Play Ireland As Oasis Jet In

Festival fans will be keeping their fingers crossed for good weather as a string of big-name acts take to the stage. Support acts for the gig include The Prodigy, Kasabian, Glasvegas and the Blizzards.

A host of celebrity friends of Noel and Liam Gallagher are also expected to be jetting in to see them perform at the Meath castle venue.

The lads will kick off a series of three gigs in Manchester this evening as they embark on their tour of Britain and Ireland.

But it seems we will also have the other Gallagher brother performing on these shores this month as well. Eldest brother Paul, who worked for Creation Records, is coming to Ireland to play to his fans himself.

Yet he'll be taking to the stage in a slightly more modest venue than Slane, given that he is playing a DJ set in Eamon Doran's the day before Oasis play there. He has been invited over by bar owner Dermot Doran, a good friend whom he met during the Britpop years. Largely credited with inspiring his younger brothers' passion for music, he first introduced Noel to the magic of The Jam and used to loan him his favourite guitar.

Childhood

Given that their parents are both Irish, it is little wonder that the Oasis stars are looking forward to performing here shortly.

"We used to spend six weeks of our school holidays here until I was 15, so it was a massive part of my childhood.

"Even the smell in the air and, of course, the sweet shops in Ireland are just the best in the world. It's the land of our fathers," Noel told the Diary.

His estranged father Tommy hails from Duleek and his mum Peggy comes from Mayo, with rumours that she will be coming over to watch her sons perform live.

Oasis Ready To Rock Heaton Park Over Three Nights

If Noel Gallagher is to be believed - and although he's a master of one-liner, we at City Life think this is gospel – these latest outdoor shows could be the last time you see or hear from Oasis in five years.

Speak to Ian Brown and John Squire and they can tell you from bitter experience the error of a five-year absence.

But apparently Noel is determined to have a go at this old rock ’n’ roll lark sans Liam and the rest of the Oasis boys.

Going solo is, quite frankly, something we at CityLife expected Noel to have a dabble at years ago.

Great solo album

Oasis may be the biggest survivors of the Britpop revolution, and are certainly the only ones that went the distance (at a time when reunions are all the rage, Oasis are a reminder that great things don’t have to come to an end because they’re going through a rough patch), but Noel has always sounded like he’s got at least one great solo album to get off his chest.

Whether Noel is truly a great songwriter or not is a point of huge debate, but you can’t argue with results; it’s not for nothing that Oasis recently stole four places in the Top 10 of an Xfm poll of the best British songs of all time – entering at number 10 and going on to grab the top three places too.

Pat on the back

Live Forever snatched the No1 spot over Wonderwall (at No2) and Don’t Look Back In Anger. Bringing up the rear at No10 was Champagne Supernova.

And yet, we suspect that even Noel would not agree with Xfm’s conclusions (although we’re sure he’d find a graceful way of accepting such an enormous pat on the back).

Not one Beatles track made the Top 10, and Oasis pipped The Stone Roses, Joy Division and The Verve to conclusively take the crown.

Right enough, they’re iconic songs, and they’ve proven their lasting appeal on dance floors everywhere.

But nowhere do they stir a crowd more than at live shows; the band’s current tour of outdoor gigs will put them through the hardest acid test ever in front of more than 700,000 people in just nine days.

Only anthems will do

Which makes the 70,000-capacity Heaton Park shows the kind of gigs where only anthems will do. CityLife reckons we’ll hear them singing the tunes right at the very back.

Oasis at Heaton Park. Kasabian, The Enemy and Twisted Wheel support. Thursday, April 4, Saturday, April 6, Sunday, April 7. £45.

The city council has set up a helpline for residents near the park to express concerns or find out information about how the area is affected by the shows. The community information hotline number is 0161 954 9003.

Killer Pills Alert Over Oasis Gig

Drug lords out to make a killing at tonight's sellout Oasis concert could do just that - by flogging potentially lethal tablets made of Fertiliser.

Mind-bending Diablo XXX pills are feared to have been shipped in from Amsterdam for the three gigs by Liam Gallagher's band at Manchester's Heaton Park.

They contain the plant food ingredients Ketones, Dicalcium Phosphate and Magnesium Sterate.

A similar drug, Mind Candy, left a lad of 18 from Glasgow needing psychiatric treatment.

His dad said: "He's in a terrible mess."

Drug expert Dr Maggie Watts said grimly: "I am amazed people haven't yet died."

Green Day For Liam Gallagher

Liam Gallagher turned the cagoule from the trainspotter’s choice into a fashion staple for any lad about town.

So I imagine his Pretty Green clothing range will go down well.

The Oasis rocker’s designs go on general sale tomorrow, the same day the lads kick off their summer tour with a mega gig at Manchester’s Heaton Park.

I wonder whether Liam will set up a stand to hawk his clobber to gig-goers?

If he did, I’m sure Radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe would be first in the queue.

The Kiwi has named the frontman as his fave rock star.

Not that Liam has ever been unsure of himself.

He once said: “There’s Elvis and me. I couldn’t say which of the two is best.”

Stadium Gears Up To Feed 160,000

Concert-goers heading to see Oasis and Take That over the coming days will be well fed and watered, according to bosses at the Stadium of Light.

In a bid to ensure the 160,000 music fans descending on the city get served quickly, stadium bosses have recruited the help of the fastest pint dispensing pump on the market

Standard beer taps take up to 16 seconds to pour a pint, but the new £50,000 system does it in just three seconds, making it perfect for the 120,000 pints which the club expects to pour over the three dates.

Stadium bosses have spent almost a year cooking up the perfect catering plan to deal with the thousands of concert-goers who are expected to munch their way through more than four miles of hot dogs and baguettes.

Gary Hutchinson, SAFC concert project manager, said: "This was a tremendous challenge for the catering and events team.

"The stadium is traditionally used to host football matches and our catering facilities are geared towards short, sharp bursts of activity before and after a match.

"But for the concerts we are required to change our approach to provide food and drink over a significantly longer period of time of seven hours or more.

"At the concerts, people will be encouraged to move around and take their food and drink to their seats and on to the pitch – something that is usually not allowed at a football match.

"In order to prepare for the concerts at Sunderland we have worked with the same team that hosted the Oasis and Take That concerts at the Manchester City football ground.

"We listened to what they said had what worked for them, and what hadn't. This has enabled us to make informed decisions, combined with our local knowledge, to ensure the best possible outcome for the Sunderland concerts."

The club has worked closely with Scottish and Newcastle Breweries, its official drinks supplier, and Brake, its food supplier.

Jamie Robson, of Scottish and Newcastle Breweries, who cancelled his holiday to Italy to be on hand at the gigs, said: "Catering for events on this scale is always a challenge in terms of planning and logistics.

However, we have worked closely with SAFC to ensure they are well prepared to cater for the needs of every fan attending the concerts."

Charity Bid Woe

A Charity for children has been short-changed after a buyer backed out of their winning bid for Oasis tickets.

The bidder sealed the pair of passes for the band’s date at Sunderland’s Stadium of Light with the offer of £1,000, during a charity auction, at the Variety Club’s tribute to Tim Healy and Denise Welch, earlier this year. Now the cause has been left out of pocket after the cash-strapped bidder retracted their offer. Unless the charity can find a new buyer they will miss out on the vital funds.

The Oasis gig is on June 10. Anyone who would like to bid for the sold-out gig, and help the club’s work should contact Bob Gladwin on 07939 031 405.

Oasis Set To Rock The Park

Oasis start their three-night homecoming run at Heaton Park in Prestwich tomorrow night, with further shows on Saturday and Sunday.

The mega-gigs could be the first of many for the venue, which aims to become one of the best in Europe.

However, organisers have advised that some roads will be closed between 9.30pm and 1am on show days for safety reasons.

Bury Old Road will be closed from Sheepfoot Lane to Heys Road and Sheepfoot Lane will be closed completely.

Public parking around the park will also be suspended on concert days.

A community information hotline has been set up for local residents and businesses to call if they have any questions or concerns about the concerts.

The number is 0161 954 9003 and is available until 1am after each show.

In addition, other arrangements include Park and Ride facilities near Heaton Park and shuttle buses to and from the city centre.

There will also be stewarding and policing around the park.

Heaton Park Metrolink Stop Evening Closures

Transport bosses are advising concert goers and local residents near Heaton Park to plan their journeys before the Oasis concerts at the park on 4, 6, and 7 June.

GMPTE is making special arrangements to help people get to and from Heaton Park quickly and safely, and transport bosses are encouraging people to think about their journeys.

Heaton Park Metrolink stop will be open before and during each concert but will be closed straight after the performances, for safety reasons, from approximately 10pm.

Metrolink staff will be on hand to direct passengers from the concert to the Bowker Vale Metrolink stop and there will be a clearly signed walking route from Heaton Park. Services on the Bury line will be extended to cope with demand from other stops.

Philip Purdy, GMPTE's Metrolink Director, said: "We want this event to go smoothly with as little disruption for local residents as possible. We're closing the Heaton Park Metrolink stop for safety reasons immediately after the concerts but there are other public transport options available for concert-goers and residents."

15 extra buses will operate from Lever Street and Corporation Street in Manchester city centre to Heaton Park. Buses to get people back from Heaton Park will start from 9.30pm and run until after midnight.

The following bus services stop either at or close to Heaton Park: 51, 59, 88, 89, 135, 137, 138, 149, 167 and X35. Information on local bus services and other public transport options is available at www.gmpte.com, or by calling Traveline on 0871 200 22 33. (Calls cost 10p a minute. Some mobile and landline networks may charge more. Lines are open from 7am to 8pm, Monday to Friday, and from 8am to 8pm at weekends.)

There is also a community information line for local residents and businesses to call if they have any questions or concerns about the concerts. They can call the info line on 0161 954 9003 from Thursday 4 June to Sunday 7 June.

Warning For Oasis Fans Over Counterfeit Goods

Oasis fans going to this weekend’s concerts are being urged to watch out for traders selling merchandise outside the venue, as the items are likely to be counterfeit.

The warning comes after Manchester City Council trading standards officers, accompanied by Greater Manchester Police, seized around 7,000 counterfeit items, including counterfeit band T-shirts, during what is thought to be one of the largest raids of its kind in the city’s history.

An articulated lorry had to be used to move the items, taken from a city centre warehouse, while items were also seized from a house in Levenshulme and a van during the operation earlier this month.

The officers seized T-shirts and hooded tops bearing logos of bands playing during concerts at Heaton Park on June 4, 6 and 7, including Oasis, Kasabian and The Enemy, along with other artists including The Stone Roses, The Ting Tings, Girls Aloud and Bob Dylan.

Counterfeit Manchester United and Manchester City scarves, hats and shirts were also seized during the raid.

Printing businesses were also raided as part of the operation, with officers seizing printing screens and acetates of T-shirt designs. A man has been questioned in relation to the operation.

Councillor Richard Cowell, Manchester City Council’s Executive Member for the Environment, said: “I would like to praise our trading standards officers for carrying out this raid, which will have a significant impact on the amount of bogus items being sold outside concerts.

“However, there are still likely to be illegal traders attempting to sell items outside the concert, and I would like to remind fans that the items they sell are likely to be counterfeit and of poor quality. Fans who care about what they’re getting should buy merchandise from the official stalls.

“I would also like to warn any illegal street traders who are planning to sell items outside the concert – we will have officers at the event and we will be looking out for you.”
