Legends Set For Glastonbury Bill?

Glastonbury organisers have hinted they want to celebrate the festival's 40th anniversary by only inviting acts who have provided the event's highlights over the last four decades.

Michael and Emily Eavis will make up a bill comprised of legendary acts such as David Bowie, Oasis and The Stone Roses next year, The Sun reports.

A source told the newspaper: "Michael and Emily want to make next year's festival the most memorable ever."

Oasis' Noel Gallagher Pays Tribute To The Specials

Oasis' Noel Gallagher paid tribute to Coventry's 2-Tone legends The Specials at the Ricoh Arena last night.

The Manchester super group - along with Cov Kids The Enemy - performed in front of 40,000 fans yesterday as they completed the Coventry leg of their UK tour.

Noel went backstage with the reformed band earlier this year when the Ghost Town group enjoyed a historic homecoming gig at the Jaguar hall.

And the Oasis legend told last night's sell-out crowd his thoughts on the legendary 2-Tone act.

He told the crowd: "I was here a few months ago. I came here to see the Specials gig.

"They were great with us and allowed us in their dressing room. They're called Special for a reason."

The Specials were in the crowd for last night's gig.

Noel finished his tribute by asking for an ovation for the Coventry favourites, which promptly brought the house down.

Noel Gallagher Compares Michael Jackson To Jade Goody

And says the King of Pop's death is 'dragging on a bit'...

Noel Gallagher has taken a a cheeky swipe at the intense media interest surrounding Michael Jackson's death saying it's “dragging on a bit”.

The guitarist even compared Jackson to the late Jade Goody in the 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere' blog on Oasis' official website.

Speaking ahead of their performance at Coventry's Ricoh Arena and the day of Michael Jackson's memorial service, Noel said: “This Mike Jackson thing's dragging on a bit, innit? Who do they think he is, Jade Goody?

“Listen out for the dedication tonight. There's bound to be one. If it's during Live Forever I may do a little poo-poo... then vomit.”

Gigwise was at the show and Noel must have been struck with a sudden bout of amnesia as he didn't mention Jackson's name once.

'Oasis Beat Blur In Long-Term Britpop War', Claims Music Industry Stats

PRS For Music figures claim more people listen to Noel than Damon.

Oasis have won the long-term Britpop battle with Blur, PRS For Music has claimed.

The organisation that collects royalties for songwriters, say their figures suggest despite Damon Albarn and co beating the Gallaghers to the UK Number One single spot in August 1995 – when 'Country House' outsold 'Roll With It' after they were released on the same day – it's the northern band who have enjoyed the most exposure since.

Based on PRS' research, Oasis have been listened to more than Blur over the last 14 years when both band's total listens are compared head-to-head.

As a percentage of both groups' combined total plays, the following songs have proved the most popular:

Oasis – 'Wonderwall', 68%
Oasis – 'Roll With It', 12%
Blur – 'Country House', 10%
Oasis – 'Some Might Say', 7%
Blur – 'Beetlebum', 3%

“With Blur performing some storming gigs and Oasis' back on tour it’s like the heyday of Britpop once again," explained Steve Porter, Chief Executive PRS For Music. "These new figures showing that despite Blur winning the original battle, Oasis wins long-term by number of plays. However with both bands still working and their music being widely played the battle continues.”

Odds Are High On Oasis Split

Bookies are offering silly odds on Noel Gallagher leaving Oasis.

The Chief, snapped leaving posh hairdressers Percy & Reed in London yesterday, and brother Liam have been bickering again.

Noel said life would be easier without Oasis. Fair point.

Liam made a Twitter jibe about his big brother joining the Nolans.

Bookies Boylesports reckon the end is nigh.

They now have the Mancs at 2-1 to split before their tour ends in August.

The band’s songwriter and guitarist is also 7/4 to join another group by the end of 2010.

A public scrap gets a generous 4-1. Noel loves a bet.

I wouldn’t be surprised if he lumped on via a pal and made a few quid.

Oasis Rock Coventry's Ricoh Arena

Oasis - the bad boys of rock - swaggered onto stage in front of thousands of diehard fans at Coventry’s Ricoh Arena last night.

A storming crowd of 38,000 waved their hands in the air as they welcomed Oasis to the packed out city stadium.

Revellers chanted their loud and rowdy anthems, including Cigarettes and Alcohol, Roll With It and Wonderwall.

Liam rattled his tambourine and brother Noel raised his guitar as they played Rock ‘n’ Roll Star to an ocean of fans.

They were supported by the city’s most successful rock band, The Enemy, who excited crowds as they belted out tracks like It’s Not OK and This Song.

Oasis, who have already played in their home city of Manchester last month, shot to fame in the 90s selling more than 60 million albums across the world.

It was the only Midlands date on the tour of the UK and was the fastest selling gig in the Ricoh’s history with 20,000 tickets snapped up within its first two hours of sales.

John Corden, aged 62, of Bulkington, in Bedworth, was joined by his nephew David, aged 21.

He praised the band’s rebellious antics on stage. “They’re brilliant. I’ve listened to them for years. They’ve still got it – they’re still selling records and filling stadiums.

“Their arrogance is their appeal and the confidence in their own ability is what makes them great. A lot of bands have it but these guys are very cool about it.

“I came to see The Enemy as much as I did for Oasis – it’s good that we can celebrate two of our favourite bands in one place really.”

Susan Dixon, aged 41, was with her son, Glen, aged 24, and daughter, Toni, aged 19.

Glen said: “It’s was an electric atmosphere. I absolutely love Oasis – it’s makes a change for them to be in the city.

"My favourite tracks of all time is Champagne Supernova – it’s a quality song and sounds even better live.

They’re a great band.”

Electrician John Cave, aged 26, of Rugby, and his close friends are dedicated fans who grew up listening to the band since they were young.

He said: “I followed them since I was 11 years old and I’ve never seen them before. I’ve seen lost of other music groups but they don’t compare to Oasis.”

His best mate, Joe Flanagan, aged 24, said: “I saw them in Heaton and they were great. They are the best band ever because with every song it holds a memory.

“They define a generation - that’s why they’re so popular.

"They triumph in Britain and I finally got to see them in Coventry. It was the best show that I’ve seen them play.”

Chief executive of the Ricoh, Daniel Gidney said: “This was fantastic for us. They are one of the biggest bands in British history.

“We capable of catering for different tastes. Oasis are a modern rock band and we were delighted to have them at the Ricoh.

“The profile of the event was clearly different to other concerts we’ve held.

"There are more blokes drinking beer but we had more stewards on site.”

Oasis are set to play at the Wembley Stadium tomorrow, July 10 and 12.

Review: Oasis @Ricoh Arena, Coventry

It's 13 years since the mouthy Mancunians played to a quarter of a million people at Knebworth, but the Gallagher brothers’ onstage swagger is still justified.

For as the sun went down over Coventry City’s Ricoh Arena, the World’s most famous Manchester City supporters lit up the stadium with a jaw-dropping sound and visual spectacle.

Three giant screens beamed out bright, psychedelic images of the rockers on stage to an audience of 30,000 plus.

They launched into their two-hour long set with Rock and Roll Star, Liam’s voice as powerful and distinctive as ever.

They then ripped through hit after hit from their two biggest albums Definitely Maybe and What’s the Story (Morning Glory) with songs from their later albums punctuating the set.

The only way a band with as many sing-along, anthemic tunes as Oasis can falter is through a lack of enthusiasm borne of too many years playing the same stuff.

Their stage presence and vigour hasn’t waned over the years however and although band members have changed since their Britpop glory days, their tightness and on-stage presence has not. It was the final rousing Oasis anthems Don’t Look Back in Anger and their homage to The Beatles I am the Walrus which sent the revellers who had each paid more than £30 for a ticket into hysterics.

In a nutshell: Commanding, brilliant, catchy – what more could want from a stadium band?

Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere

Taken from Noel's tour diary for oasisinet.com

Boom! Boom!! D'you know what that is? That's the sound of thunder - or so my little lad informed me over the weekend.

How's things? Fine and dandy? Good.

Am in Coventry today. Haven't been here since, ooh 2 months ago. Came to see The Specials, innit?

After a week of glorious weather while we were away it's pissing down. C***'s trick. The Ricoh Arena's mega though. Very tidy. Looking forward to tonight.

My mates "Free Peace" are opening up. Good boys. Top band.

The Enemy are the main band on before us tonight. Kasabian are busy being weird somewhere odd. It's a homer for them. Should be mad as fuck.

Wonder what Bruno will wear tonight? Mr al Fayed's shoes have made their long-awaited re-appearance! Life's been dull without them.

This Mike Jackson thing's dragging on a bit, innit? Who do they think he is, Jade Goody? Listen out for the dedication tonight. There's bound to be one. If it's during Live Forever I may do a little poo-poo..then vomit.

In a bit.

GD.

James Buckley On Noel Gallagher

Inbetweeners star James Buckley has revealed that he wasn't too impressed with his hero Noel Gallagher's outfit when he met him at London's Groucho Club recently.

The actor, who plays Jay Cartwright in the hit series, told channelbee.com that while he thinks Oasis backbone Noel is "effortlessly cool" his threads left a lot to be desired.

He said: "He was wearing a light blue shirt and chinos - he looked like he was going boating!"

But that hasn't put James off his idol who he claims is "the one man I'd get on my knees for."

Oasis Gig Means Fillongley Four Miss Fellowship Cup Final

Pop giants Oasis have dealt a devastating blow to Fillongley’s hopes of winning the Fellowship Cup in the Nuneaton Thursday Cricket League final tonight.

Four members of the village team are off to watch their favourite group at the Ricoh Arena concert which clashes with the 18-over final at Wolvey’s Bulkington Road ground (6.30pm).

Player-secretary Simon Blackmore said: “I am one of the four who bought tickets for the Oasis concert some time ago, so I will be missing the game.

“I thought I might be the only one but I was horrified to discover there are three others in the team – including top-scorer Andy Carty – who are going to the concert.”

Fillongley already started underdogs for the game against Premier Division side Hinckley Amateurs, who include Coventry & North Warwickshire’s Harry Horsley in their side.

Oasis Fans Warned Of Ricoh Arena Pickpockets

Revellers at tonight’s Oasis gig at the Ricoh Arena in Coventry are being reminded to be on their guard against pickpockets.

With thousands of music fans due to descend on the concert venue, officers from Stoney Stanton Road police station are encouraging members of the public to keep their belongings safe and out of the reach of opportunist thieves.

Officers will be handing out thousands of postcards with crime prevention messages at the event and they will also be on hand with UV pens to mark people’s property with their postcode.

Police will also be using Bluetooth technology to pass on advice to concert-goers via their mobile phones on how to avoid becoming the victim of pickpockets.

The Telegraph revealed in May how thieves targeted the pockets of fans at The Specials’ sell-out concert at the Ricoh Arena in May.

Wallets, purses and mobile phones were snatched during the Coventry group’s homecoming gig, which was attended by thousands of 2-Tone fans.

Police received reports of 75 people who had been hit by pickpockets but police believe the tally may have been higher because some thefts may have been overlooked, as fans assumed their belongings had simply fallen out of their pockets.

Among the tips being offered by police are to keep cash secure and out of sight, keep your purse in your handbag, which should be closed and with the opening towards your body, never carry large amounts of cash and spread your possessions about – for example, keep your mobile phone separate from your purse and your keys separate from your credit card.

Police are also reminding people attending the Oasis concert that all areas around the arena are subject to a Designated Public Places Order, where it is an offence to drink alcohol after being required by a police officer not to do so.

The police have the power to confiscate alcohol and any opened or sealed containers and if an individual fails to comply with the request, they could be arrested.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"D'You Know What I Mean?" is a song by British rock band Oasis. It was the first single from their third album Be Here Now and was released on the 7th July 1997. It reached #1 in the UK singles chart, the 3rd Oasis song to do so. The song was written by Noel Gallagher. It was certified platinum for UK sales.

At the time "D'You Know What I Mean" was released, Oasis were at the height of their fame, and as a result, the single, along with the album, was highly anticipated. Upon its release it was critically and commercially successful.

The guitar chords on both the verse and the chorus are similar to the chords used for the Oasis single "Wonderwall" (F#m7/A/Esus4/Bsus4).

The song also shows more of Noel's influences. References include Bob Dylan ("Blood on the tracks and they must be mine"), and The Beatles ("Fool on the hill and I feel fine"), and even their own earlier work ("Don't look back in Anger "). The song also features a drum loop from N.W.A.

The Morse code in the background translates to include such sayings as "bugger all", "pork pies" and "Strawberry Fields Forever." Oasis haven't performed this song since 2002.

B-Sides

One of the B-sides, "Stay Young", has become a popular Oasis song, so much so that fans voted it onto the B-sides collection The Masterplan - one of only two B-sides from the Be Here Now period which made the album. The song was originally intended to be the "Digsy's Dinner" of Be Here Now (the lighthearted novelty track, such as "Digsy's Dinner" on Definitely Maybe and "She's Electric" on (What's the Story) Morning Glory?), until Noel set it aside in favour of "Magic Pie". Gallagher claims not to be particularly fond of the track.

Interview

In a 1997 interview promoting Be Here Now, Noel Gallagher had the following to say about the first single: "I was going to make up some profound statement in the chorus but I couldn't come up with anything that fitted. Then I just thought "All my people right here, right now. D'You Know What I Mean? Yeah, Yeah" Very vague, very ambiguous, that'll do. Look in the mirror and wink while you're singing it and it's quite saucy. And I f***ing love that line, 'Coming in a mess, going out in style'. We were a bunch of scruffs from Manchester and we're going out in a Rolls Royce."

In another 1997 interview, this time on BBC, Noel Gallagher said: "I cant believe I wrote it, it's going to blow people away."

"The morse code in the background was inspired by Strawberry Fields. We got hold of a code book and tried to tap out 'Bugger All' to follow that line 'Don't look back cos you know what you might see'. But if anyone can tell me what we really said, please let me know. Profound lagerisms..."

Seven Ages of Rock

In an interview with the BBC for their documentary Seven Ages of Rock, Gallagher said of the song, "Its eight and a half minutes, the first single, the drums haven't fuckin' come in for two minutes- its all feedback!". He also says that he expected someone to ask them to edit the introduction to the song down, but such was their status in Britain, nobody did. They even performed the song on Top of the Pops, still playing most of the lengthy introduction.

The performance on Top of the Pops ended with a stage invasion by surrounding fans- the second of three stage invasions in the whole history of the show (the first was Nirvana and the last Symposium).

Cover information

The single cover photograph, by Michael Spencer Jones and directed by Brian Cannon of Microdot, was taken in front of the 'Blind Steps', a staircase in Wigan so called because they run past the Blind Workshop, which can be seen to the left of the shot. The steps can still be found on Darlington Street. The shoot was shrouded in secrecy to protect mass media coverage, but newspaper The Wigan Evening Post got exclusive rights to cover the event and subsequently sold the photos to the Daily Mirror. At a lunchtime break, Liam Gallagher and sleeve designer Brian Cannon enjoyed a pint of beer in the nearby Crispin Arms pub by Birkett Bank.

Music video

The music video is filmed at Beckton Gas Works in London with many military helicopters and a strange landscape of concrete slabs and torn down buildings. Liam Gallagher is wearing a snorkel parka and sports a unique pair of sunglasses.
