On This Day In Oasis History...

It's 13 years to the day that Oasis played in front of a combined audience of 250,000 at two huge outdoor shows at Knebworth on August 10 and 11 1996.

The band sold out both shows within minutes; 250,000 people over two nights (2.5 million people applied for tickets, and 375,000 were actually sold, meaning the possibility of 53 sold out nights), at the time a record-breaking number for an outdoor concert held in the UK, and to this day the largest demand for a show in British history.

Liam Gallagher Phones His Dog From Los Angeles

If reincarnation is for real then you could do worse than be reborn as a celebrity pooch.

Just look at the pampered existence of Liam Gallagher and Nicole Appleton’s 18-month-old daschund, Ruby.

So treasured is she, Ruby gets phone calls from her barking owners when they are away on holiday.

Liam, 36, and Nicole, 34, are in LA at the moment.

So when Nic’s fellow All Saints lovelies Mel Blatt and Natalie Appleton entered the pup into a competition while babysitting at the weekend, the besotted couple were on the other end of the dog and bone the whole way through the event.

Nat even held her mobile up to the creature’s ear so “mummy and daddy” could comfort Ruby during her ordeal.

We can’t imagine Liam suffering from stage fright but he tried to be the understanding “parent” anyway.

Mel, 34, and Nicole’s big sister Nat, 36, entered the cherished dog in the prettiest female category of the Pup Idol competition, which was being held at Garden Gate pub in London’s Hampstead.

Sadly, the well-preened pet was just not gorgeous enough to win the title and lost out on the crowning glory to – horror of horrors – a stray.

How rude.

Did they not know who she was?

The All Sainters were not best impressed by Ruby getting snubbed.

Mel jokingly moaned: “It’s crappy Pup Idol. More like Sh*t Idol. It’s a fix!”

Dancing On Ice star Jeremy Edwards, 38, also entered the love of his life into the competition – his Boston terrier, Molly.

The black and white canine cutie has become a familiar feature in London parks and has even been known to proudly display a diamanté collar and tiny little dog suits.

Hmm.

On second thoughts, maybe it wouldn’t be so smart to be reincarnated as a celeb hound.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Live Forever" is a song by British rock group Oasis. Written by guitarist Noel Gallagher, the song was released as the third single from their debut album Definitely Maybe on 8 August 1994, just prior to that album's release.

Gallagher wrote the song in 1991, before he joined Oasis. Inspired by The Rolling Stones' "Shine a Light," "Live Forever" features a basic song structure and lyrics with an optimistic outlook that contrasted with the attitude of the grunge bands popular at the time. The song was the first Oasis single to enter the top ten in the United Kingdom, and garnered critical acclaim.

Background and recording

Noel Gallagher wrote "Live Forever" in 1991, while working for a building company in his hometown of Manchester. After his foot was crushed by a pipe in an accident, he was given a less-strenuous job working in the storeroom, allowing him more time to write songs. One night he was listening to The Rolling Stones' album Exile on Main St. While playing one of his own chord progressions, Gallagher noted that it sounded good against one of the vocal melodies from the album: "It was the bit from 'Shine a Light' that goes [sings], 'May the good lord shine a light on you,'" Gallagher recalled. Gallagher incorporated the melody, changing the line to "Maybe I don’t really want to know". For a period afterwards, that was the only part of the song Gallagher had completed.

The song was later instrumental in helping the band secure their record deal with Creation Records. Reflecting on when he first heard the song, Creation boss Alan McGee recalled "It was probably the single greatest moment I've ever experienced with them."

The demo version of "Live Forever" begins with an acoustic guitar intro. While recording the album version, the record's producer Owen Morris cut out this intro and replaced it with a drumbeat played by Tony McCarroll. Morris further cut a second section in Noel's guitar solo. Although Gallagher was upset, Morris felt the part had sounded "a bit like fucking Slash from Guns N' Roses".

Reception

"Live Forever" was released on 8 August 1994 as the band's third single, a month before the release of their debut album Definitely Maybe. The song had been part of the band's set for longer than a year at that point, and had amassed so many mentions in reviews of the group that "its release [as a single] had long seemed inevitable." In its review of the single, NME found "Live Forever" to be an improvement over Oasis' previous singles, concluding, "Basically, what thus far looked like obnoxious Manc arrogance suddenly looks like sheer effortlessness. A terrific record."

While Oasis' first two singles, "Supersonic" and "Shakermaker", were modestly received, it was "Live Forever" that "got the world's attention." "Live Forever" became Oasis' first top ten hit, reaching number ten on the British singles charts in 1994. In 1995, the song became the band's first chart success in the United States, reaching number two and ten on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, respectively.[8] Noel Gallagher commented on the praise given to the song: "People said to me after 'Live Forever', 'Where are you gonna go after that?' And I was like, I don't think it's that good. I think it's a fucking good song, but I think I can do better."

"Live Forever" has garnered additional acclaim years after its release. In 2006, "Live Forever" was named the greatest song of all time in a poll released by Q; the song had ranked ninth in a similar Q poll three years before.[9] In 2007, "Live Forever" placed number one in the NME and XFM poll of the 50 "Greatest Indie Anthems Ever".[10] The song was selected by Noel Gallagher for inclusion on Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks in 2006.

Music videos

Two music videos were made for "Live Forever" for British and American airplay. The original video, directed by Carlos Grasso, features unusual imagery such as Liam Gallagher sitting on a chair affixed to a wall, and a number of scenes are devoted to the band burying drummer Tony McCarroll alive. Some of the UK version of the promotional video was filmed at the Strawberry Fields memorial, the area of New York City's Central Park dedicated to John Lennon—the single cover features 251 Menlove Avenue, the childhood home of Lennon. The American video, directed by Nick Egan, features the band playing in an office with pictures of Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Marc Bolan, and Bobby Moore on the wall. Both videos are included on the 2004 Definitely Maybe DVD.

New Order Fallout: 'Like A Fat Blur And Oasis', Says Peter Hook

Peter Hook has ruled out the possibility of New Order reuniting.

Speaking to The Quietus, he revealed that it was unlikely he and former bandmate Bernard Sumner would be able to repair their fractured relationship after New Order split up two years ago.

"There is no current situation [with New Order]", he said. "We split up two years ago. For a while Bernard seemed to be a bit confused about that but now, from what I gather, he's accepted it.

"In my mind, Bernard spilt us up in '92 when he went off with Johnny Marr, and I split us up this time. All we have to wait for is when we get back together is hopefully for Stephen to split us up and we’ll all be even."

He added: "I think there would have to be a terrible lot of blood letting. It’s been very... it's been the messiest divorce I’ve ever had, let’s put it that way."

Hook also commented on the fact that his new band, Freebass, are set to go head to head with Bad Lieutenant, the group started by the remainding members of New Order.

"It’s a very strange position to be in, especially with the fact that we’ve both got records coming out together at the same time", he said.

"It’s very weird. But it’s exciting. It’s a bit like a fat version of Blur and Oasis."

Check The Quietus next week for the full interview: Freebase, Joy Division, Manchester, and more New Order.

Ricky Hatton Interview With StopCryingYourHeartOut.com

StopCryingYourHeartOut.com caught up with legendary British boxer Ricky 'The Hitman' Hatton recently to discuss his new fight night: 'The Boys Are Back In Town'. The event will feature some of the top up and coming names in British Boxing and is being promoted by Ricky's own Hatton Promotions.

Here's what Ricky had to say about all things Boxing, Oasis and Man City.

Q: Hi Ricky hows things? and thanks for taking the time to do this.

Thanks for inviting me to answer some questions. I am taking advantage of the great British summer and resting at the moment

Q: You're friendship with Oasis goes back a long way, did you enjoy introducing the band in Liverpool for the first night of the UK tour last year. Was that a bit daunting for you? And did you enjoy the experience?

I have always been a massive Oasis fan. After my Family, Boxing and City the other passion in my life is Oasis. Through boxing I am fortunate to have appeared in front of big crowds, when I got asked to announce the lads at Liverpool it was a massive honour. It was just after some clown had had a go at Noel so I was bubbling inside with excitement. I jokingly warned that if anybody tried anything in Liverpool they would have to answer with me. Luckily nobody got up.

Q: Do you own any Oasis memorabilia, if you do whats your favorite piece?

I save all my laminates but the best thing I have is a Manchester City guitar signed by Noel and Liam and Mani from The Stone Roses. It has pride of place in my games room. I have a signed photograph from Noel and Liam where we are all together in the ring after the Malignaggi fight.

Q: Noel told us in a interview he did with us earlier this year, that after your fight with Malignaggi you went on a almighty piss-up spanning two continents. What was it like to be on the road with Oasis? And do you have any good stories to tell us?

It was brilliant being on the road, I was in Mexico City, I was like Gulliver because the Mexicans are all small. Its a good job I was there, I made sure they were in bed early, only joking. Then three weeks later I was in Las Vegas for the De La Hoya fight and we rushed straight over to the Palms to watch the lads. I met up with them backstage and I went for a quiet pint or two with Noel and Russell Brand in the Playboy Club. On the way up I borrowed a wheel chair and made my entrance to the club with my leg in the air. Noel creased himself, after Vegas I think they must have thought I was stalking them.

Q: What did Liam say to Malignaggi when he thrusted one of your belts into his face? As he looked a bit annoyed at what Liam said to him.

From what I can recall, Liam went over to Malignaggi and shoved one of my belts in front of them and said something like "what do you think of that" that got me a bit worried because Paulie is an Italian from New York and he had half the Sopranos with him. To make things worse some clown arranged for Oasis and there security to be sat behind the Malignaggi corner during the fight, but it was absolutely amazing to have all the lads at the fight. They came in the dressing room before the fight. Imagine having Oasis the full band, Sylvester Stallone, Jason Statham, David Beckham all in the same room at the same time brilliant. It was an honour for me to have Liam and Noel walk me out with the belts.

Q: Liam gave you some items from his Pretty Green label, what did you think of them? And have you given Liam any of your own range as he does quite a bit of jogging these days?

I love the Pretty Green stuff just up my street, I wear the hats all the time. I didn't know he was out jogging I will send him some kit.

Q: What's your favorite album by Oasis? And Why?

I think my favourite album is Don't Believe The Truth, it has tracks like Lyla and A Bell Will Ring which was dedicated to me when Oasis played Manchester City's ground a couple of years back. I was in Tenerife and all my mates phoned me to tell me.

Q: What's your favorite track by Oasis? And Why?

Its hard to pick one tune, I would say Cigarettes And Alcohol, Live Forever and Rock 'n' Roll Star.

Q: You are now promoting fights with your own stable of fighters, do you think you can find the next big thing?

I will let people decide for themselves on that but I know that with my boxing experience and I have a great team around me that there is no reason why in the coming years Hatton Promotions will be a force to be reckoned with. We already have 8 Sky TV dates for the next year starting in September.

Q: What have you learned from previous promoters, that you will use in your new career?

I have seen a lot on the way up some good and some not so good. But the thing that stands out for me is the model that Goldenboy uses. I want to be the same show the fighters exactly what is on the table so they know what they are getting. I want transparency.

Q: If you could promote any boxer current or past, who would it be and why?

Roberto Duran my hero, he was always in an exciting fight and a great ticket seller, just what a promoter needs

Q: Regardless of weight, if you could choose to fight anyone in history who would it be?

Again if I could fight him Roberto Duran. It would have been an honour and I would have seen just how good he really was.

Q: Who is the most talented natural fighter you've ever stepped into the ring with?
Its a toss up between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather sadly they both beat me but they are without doubt the best.

Q: You have launched your own clothing range and have recently opened a brand new gym too. Are there any other projects you are working on at the moment that you can tell us about?

I am very busy at the moment one of my projects is www.hattonboxing.tv I have my own TV show on the Internet and they film the fights at my promotions and do some great interviews, check it out

Q: Out of Liam and Noel who would make the better boxer?

Liam or Noel, that's a tricky one I don't know who would win but I wouldn't mind promoting it.

Q: What other band's/artists do you like?

Apart from Oasis, I like the Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Stone Roses, James, Kings Of Leon but I also like all types of music from Sinatra and Elvis through to Johnny Cash

Q: What was the first album you bought?

Oasis Be Here Now was the first album I bought

Q: In certain parts of Manchester you are known as the Karaoke King with renditions of Elvis classics. Do you do any Oasis numbers?

I have been known to do Oasis, I would say Wonderwall is my karaoke song from Oasis

Q: Manchester City have made some great signings this summer, who are you most excited about joining you and why?

City have signed some world class players I think I will be looking forward to seeing Tevez, he has come from the dark side and he is no nonsense and a grafter, but like I said we have a lot of world class players

Q: If they made a film of your life, who would you like to play you and why?

If they made a film of me they would need two actors, Tom Cruise in training and Johnny Vegas out of training.

Q: I have read in several newspapers a few years ago you bought a Only Fool And Horse 3 Wheeled Van, complete with a blow up doll and a Dell Boy suit and hat. Do you drive around in it, or is it kept locked up in the garage?

I have the Trotters van in my garage. when it comes to television that is without doubt my favourite programme. I have it in the garage. I got it mot' d lately so I can go for a spin in it. I even starred in a spin off of Only Fools And Horses called Green Grass. I met Boycie and Marlene, luvley jubbly.

Liam Gallagher - Apology From The Guardian

In an earlier article 'Liam Gallagher storms out of Oasis gig' published online on 22July 2009 we wrongly suggested that Liam Gallagher walked out of an Oasis gig and did not return disrupting the set they were performing.

In fact Liam Gallagher only left the stage whilst his brother sang two songs as is normal during their performance and returned to continue the rest of the set.

We apologise to Liam Gallagher for this error.

Kasabian Interview With Q Magazine

Fresh from releasing their new album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum, Q Radio's Danielle Perry caught up with Tom (vocals) and Chris (bass guitar) from Midlands-based rock group Kasabian, to talk about the people and the music that has made them who they are today.

Download the podcast here:

Q: Who would you say was the most influential person in your life, who has made you who you are today?

Tom: It’s a tough one, this is really deep. Possibly my granddad. I don’t know what else to say, because he was a big father figure to me. He was a Sergeant Major, a Japanese Prisoner of War and lived in Singapore with my mum at his own army base out there. There was something about him that was just gold. I really adored him.

Q: Did you spend a lot of time with him when you were younger?

Tom: Yeah. Me and my brother idolised him, as he’d just talk to us about things. There were other figures; my dad was one of them, he taught me right from wrong.

Q: Was it the legacy of your grandfather? His strength of character?

Tom: He was solid, yeah. He had big blue eyes, golden brown skin, glowed and looked amazing. He was just incredible. My mum said I looked a lot like him when he was in his twenties.

Q: Is he your role model? Do you think you would have achieved as a person if you grow up to be like him?

Tom: Yeah, completely. I wish he was here now, to see it [the success of the band] and to see what I’ve done. My old man is my role model as well, without a doubt; he kept me strict – well tried to! – kept me on the straight and narrow. He did well, you know. So I had two kinds of father figures.

Q: And when you’re a father yourself, do you think you might try and instil it into them? Do you want children?!

Tom: I’d hope to have children one day, though I’m still a child myself. I’ve got to learn to grow up. This sounds pretty weird, but a song which I grew up to was Benny King’s Stand By Me. I remember I had the 45 on vinyl and it was from the film Stand By Me in 1985. And the B-Side was [sings] Take out the Papers and The Trash. I suppose that reflects my childhood. It’s my favourite song that’s ever been written, in my opinion.

Q: How about yours, Chris? What was the most important relationship when you were growing up, or even now?

Chris: My older brothers, probably. I used to live with them; I never grew up with my dad, as my mum and dad split up when I was about two. So I never grew up with him but I see loads of him. I’ve got an older brother who is 34 and another who is 31, so [they were] always there as my best mates and the people who I looked up to and influenced me. My mum obviously was a big influence, because she brought four kids up on her own. It’s family figures - people like that; Ronald McDonald was there every time I was hungry – and Hamburglar!

I used to listen to whatever what my mum and brothers were listening to. I grew up with a lot of Michael Jackson.

Q: So, strong family units basically?

Tom: Yeah, this is really deep! It’s not weird deep though.

Q: So you all grew up in the same village. Did you all hang out together or go round to each other’s houses? Your families must have known each other as well?

Tom: I kind of knew Chris Edwards in secondary school and knew who Serge was, because of football. I was taller than Serge; he was tiny! He had a tiny, squeaky voice.
Chris: He went to live in America for three months didn’t he?
Tom: [laughs] Yeah, and he died his hair peroxide blonde!
Chris: He did. And then he ate loads of GM Foods and came back about seven foot! [Laughs]
Tom: I didn’t really hang around with Chris and Serge. They had their own lot in their part of the village and I had my lot. I suppose we started connecting on a Friday night; I’d head up on my BMX fairly mashed and they’d be there with a bottle of cider! And from then on Serge asked if I wanted to be in this band he’d got with Chris, and I thought, “Let’s try it!”

Q: So how did the subject of music come up? Was there one band which united you altogether that you all had a passion for?

Chris: The Britpop era in general. Obviously Oasis was a massive influence to us. They were the pinnacle of the music at that time. So we used to learn chords from Oasis, The Beatles…
Tom: Serge once camped outside HMV all night for a Britpop CD. There was a vibe that no band had created for a long time when Oasis brought out their third album. Everyone was just s***ing themselves for this album. Pulp and Supergrass, it was an amazing time. Be Here Now sparked pandemonium in the UK, people queuing overnight, it’s crazy. You ask Noel Gallagher and he’ll say the same thing.
Chris: I remember my mum’s husband queuing for me! We had GCSEs at the time and I think we skipped a couple of the exams so we could go round Serge’s and listen to the CDs. It was a pinnacle time when we were all buzzing for it. We knew what we wanted to be then.

Tom: Just things kids do when they’re 16… we would try and mimic The Who with Serge jumping around like [Pete] Townsend! But it was amazing, because we used to get free studio time. I used to go there with my younger brother and we used to jam and make a couple of songs. We did a song called My Dreaming. They were good and we started progressing and doing demos.
Chris: We had nothing else to do apart from going down the park playing football and drinking. I know it sounds quite clichéd and a lot of people do it, but we didn’t have anything else to do. So we went to the studio to rehearse three or four times a week and that was our life.
Tom: We had a residency at The Big Word in Leicester. It was cool, because we were completely religious about music. Just the whole innocence of it all was pretty amazing.
Chris: Then we got chucked out for not paying!
Tom: Yeah, Rocky the manager threw us out. We were in debt with him a bit so then we started rehearsing in Serge’s Dad’s MOT garage in the freezing cold. You wouldn’t be able to feel your fingers. Just getting there was the fun.

Q: Was there anyone from your village who had actually been in a band and particularly successful? So where did that self belief come from? Were you all quite confident people to believe it could happen?

Tom: I just think we were cool cats; we were cocky and we’ve got this enigma about us. We didn’t know when it was going to happen, but we had a feeling inside that it was going to happen one day. It’s pretty mad.

Q: Was this your first ever band and was it just a magical meeting and merging of people together?

Tom: Yeah, we’ve been together for 12 years – that’s a long time. We were 16/17. It’s unbelievable isn’t it? We were boys!

Q: So you’ve got all the different dynamics in the band and you’ve had a few line up changes as well. Are you content with it now? Do you still want perfection?

Tom: Well, I’m a perfectionist and so is Chris, but I think we’re at a level in this band where we’re comfortable in what we are. We’re good musicians and I think we’ve turned out good.

Q: When you go away – you toured for four years – that’s a huge amount of time to go away for, how is that altogether as characters? Are you sick of it now?

Chris: Living out of a bag is great, it’s what we love doing! With different characters on the bus, no-one gets in each other’s space. Tom’s mental; I’m the one who keeps a lid on it…it’s good that we all get on and we never argue. It sounds weird…

"It really is like the old days of Oasis for me – these small, sweaty gigs where the audience are going barmy. There's a real menace and excitement to this band. I've seen it before with Oasis. And I'm seeing it all over again with The Vortex." Bonehead talking about The Vortex.
