U2 Pay Tribute To Oasis At Wembley Stadium

It's tricky not to drop names when you've been to a U2 gig in an enclosure for the bands' pals.

Noel Gallagher, Richard Curtis, Roman Abramovich, Will Champion from Coldplay, Brian Eno and Lars Ulrich from Metallica stood shoulder to shoulder at the 360 Tour's opening night at Wembley - with a Scotsman from The Sun in the middle.

U2 proved they are the best stadium act in the world last night with a note-perfect performance.

Bono paid tribute to Oasis with a few lines of Acquiesce which was greeted with rapturous applause.

Other highlights included Elevation, City Of Blinding Lights, Walk On, Streets Have No Name and the climax, With Or Without You.

Guitar Legend Les Paul Dies

Anyone who has ever picked up an electric guitar owes a debt of thanks to Les Paul, who died today at 94.

Paul built a solid body guitar, which served as the template for the electric guitar. Paul's model, introduced by Gibson in 1952, remains one of the most popular guitars to this day. His tinkering in the studio also led to multi-track recording.

Slash and Jimmy Page play Les Pauls. So do Madonna, Katy Perry, Ben Harper, Coldplay's Johnny Buckland and Oasis's Noel Gallagher.

Many artists are speaking out about their love and admiration for Paul. Below are a collection of comments.

"My friend & mentor Les Paul died today at 94, he was one of the most stellar human beings I've ever known, rest in peace Les."

-Slash (via Twitter)

"Remembering Les Paul today. Just happened to have his namesake Gibson around my shoulder the last few days."

-John Mayer

"Les Paul set a standard for musicianship and innovation that remains unsurpassed," said Joe Satriani. "He was the original guitar hero, and the kindest of souls. Last October I joined him onstage at The Iridium club in NYC, and he was still shredding. He was and still is an inspiration to us all."

-Joe Satriani

"Les Paul was truly a 'one of a kind.' We owe many of his inventions that made the rock 'n roll sound of today to him, and he was the founding father of modern music .This is a huge loss to the music community and the world. I am honored to have known him."

-B.B. King

"I am deeply touched by the passing of Les Paul who I first met in 1959. As a guitarist, composer, electronic innovator and inventor, he was beyond genius and there was none other like him. He was a true musical gift from God to the world and spent his life honoring that gift. I proudly play my Les Paul guitars every night on stage and never forget the moments we shared."

-Randy Bachman, Bachman Turner Overdrive/Guess Who

Also, in a nice move, the flag that flies on top of the Capitol Tower in Hollywood has been lowered to half-staff in Paul's honor. Paul was signed to Capitol Records in 1948 and played a pivotal role in building the label and the legendary Capitol Studios.

Is It Better To Burn Out Than To Fade Away?

"Rock stars should quit before they're 40." So said Noel Gallagher, not long after Oasis first burst onto the music scene in 1994. Should Noel and men like him have followed their advice and got out while they were still at their peak or do they remain a relevant force to this day?

When the Sex Pistols careered into people's living rooms on the night of December 1st 1976, when they appeared on Bill Grundy's Today programme using some choice language, they epitomised the anger being felt by their contemporaries. It was an anger and resentment that was channelled perfectly into their one and only studio album, 'Never Mind The Bollocks...Here's The Sex Pistols'. Bringing punk to the wider public's attention, it generated love and hate in equal measure, virtually overnight the band were the most notorious rock stars in Britain. Their story was a short-lived one however, and after sending shock-waves through their homeland with their debut release, the band would split just a few months later, ending with Lydon slumped on a stage in the US asking the crowd: "ever feel like you've been cheated?" Certainly no music fan felt cheated, they had entered in a blaze of glory, delivered an album of immense quality and importance, then they were gone, almost as quickly as they came. For twenty years they remained untouchable, the consummate example of the advantages of a band which gets out while they're at their peak. That was, before lures of a comeback proved too hard to resist, and they entered into the other side of the debate.

Nearly twenty years after Never Mind The Bollocks, Oasis hit the ground running with their own classic debut album 'Definitely Maybe'. Truly encapsulating the world and time they lived in, Oasis almost left themselves with nowhere to go as soon as they started. However, Noel Gallagher would produce his second classic album in as many years, when '(What's The Story) Morning Glory' catapulted the band to worldwide fame in 1995, and made them the biggest band in Britain since The Beatles. Still as popular with the public as ever, the albums recently came in at one and two in a poll to find the nation's favourite album. However, it was a level of success Oasis inevitably struggled to sustain. Line-up changes and poorly received albums have sparked wide debate amongst fans as to whether the band should have quit earlier, with departed guitarist Bonehead recently echoing an often spoken opinion when he stated they should've quit after their huge shows at Knebworth Park in 1996. However, the band have shown the virtues of longevity. They have recently completed a huge UK stadium tour, delighting new and older fans alike, and have arguably their best album in a decade under their belts, they've shown they remain a true force in music.

The downturn in sales, along with the upturn in concert tickets, has led Oasis to being dubbed 'The New Rolling Stones'. Still going 50 years after their formation, The Rolling Stones seemingly insatiable appetite for life on the road has seen them become one of the largest grossing touring artists on the planet. While most people would struggle to name one album they have made since 1975, people in their millions flock to see them in venues across the world. Their amazing durability has seen them become one of the last links to the first great era of British rock n roll, and it seems they will continue to sell out stadiums across the world for as long as they wish. Their popularity is as big as it has ever been and if ever band has proved the desire to continue can keep providing success, it is The Rolling Stones.

Recently back in the news celebrating the 20th anniversary of their debut album, The Stone Roses were another band who's impact was immediate when their eponymous album was released in 1989. Delighting the dance and rock lovers of the time, they quickly became a hugely influential group, delivering the kind of legendary music in a few short years that others strive for all their lives to realise. While The Stone Roses' end remains an unsatisfactory one, the impact the band made in such a short space of time means their mark on history was made, the frustration of the closing months of the band was tempered with the feeling that their job was done, that they had achieved what they needed to. While fans in 1994 may have bemoaned the band splitting, it is now seen by many as a decision which preserved their appeal.

One man who certainly made sure he got out while the going was good is Paul Weller. After forming The Jam in 1972 when he was just 14, Weller crafted some of the most memorable singles of the past 30 years, and in doing so turned The Jam into the biggest band in Britain by 1982. However, at the height of their powers, when Weller was still only 24, he disbanded The Jam and went on to form a new group, The Style Council. As the great poem 'For The Fallen' says: 'they do not grow old, as we that are left grow old'; by calling it quits while they were at the top, The Jam have remained forever synonymous with the age they first burst into. Untarnished by greying locks or sub-standard albums, their legacy remains as strong as the day they quit, even if their bank balance is that bit more modest. While fellow members Bruce Foxton and Rick Buckler have toured under the banner of The Jam over the past few years, Weller has constantly resisted a full reunion, whereas as others such as the Sex Pistols have been lured out of retirement for lucrative reunion tours, and in doing so have presented a new image from the four youngsters who changed the face of British music.

Like Paul Weller, Johnny Marr was only too aware of the positives that can be gained from a band that splits at the right time. Alongside Morrissey, he crafted some of the best music produced in the 1980s while a member of The Smiths, gaining a hugely passionate fan-base along the way. However, just like Weller had done a few years earlier, Marr walked away from the band at the height of their success in 1987. While constant reunion rumours, and large cash offers, are rejected, so the reputation of the band is sustained, cemented in the mid-80s, unblemished by the trials and tribulations a long career can bring.

Tarnished reputations is perhaps the biggest pit-fall for a band that remains active for many years. It is long forgotten now, but by the time inter-band differences finally put an end to The Beatles in 1970, they had become seen as a fading force by large sections of the public. It has been said that they got out just at the right time, just as murmurings of a backlash were starting and in doing so preserved a legacy which now sees them described as the most influential band of all time. Would it have been the same if the band had struggled on past their differences, into the 70s and the explosion of punk? Who can say, but it is certainly an intriguing thought.

Another band seemingly following the familiar pattern of The Rolling Stones and Oasis is U2. Their most recent album, 'No Line On The Horizon', has received one of the poorest receptions of any of their albums since their early days, yet the subsequent tour has seen them play to millions of people in Europe, and will take in a huge US tour shortly. Who can deny that kind of interest and support justifies a band prolonging their career?

So, was Neil Young right when he said 'it is better to burn out than to fade away'? It is difficult to say. What history does tell us is that as fame and age take their toll, bands do tend to lose the edge and hunger which found them success in the first place, and thus struggle to reproduce the quality of their old material. For many fans, the disappointment of new releases can dampen their faith and passion for a band they once loved. Their early impact can start to be eroded away, and for some people, a burn out may be long over due.

However, as the recent trend of reunions has shown, nothing can diminish the interest in a band who have made a true connection with their fans and still having these bands around to deliver their classic tunes to new generations of fans is as good a reason as any for a band to keep going. While bands such as Oasis and The Rolling Stones continue to delight fans with their music, they will surely never fade away.

On This Day In Oasis History...

Roll With It is a song by British rock band Oasis written by their lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It was released 14 August 1995 as the second single from their second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory ?, reaching #2 in the UK Singles Chart (see 1995 in British music).

"Roll With It" received a great deal of attention when Food Records, the label of Britpop rivals Blur, moved the original release date of single "Country House" to clash with it, sparking what came to be known as "The Battle of Britpop". The British media had already reported an intense rivalry between the two bands and this clash of releases was seen as a battle for the number one spot. The media sensation was spurred on by verbal attacks from the respective camps (in particular Noel and Liam Gallagher, Damon Albarn and Alex James), that extended beyond the music industry to the point where the two bands were regularly mentioned on the evening news. In particular, public imagination was sparked by the contrast between the gritty, working class Oasis and the artsy, middle class Blur. In the end, Blur's "Country House" single sold 274,000 copies to Oasis' 216,000 copies of "Roll with It". The singles charted at number 1 and number 2 respectively.

In the week of its release, Damon Albarn was asked what he thought of the song. He dubbed the band as "Quoasis" and sang "Down, down, deeper and down" in reference of the song's likeness to Status Quo's 1975 hit Down Down..

The song is like several other songs, such as "Supersonic", in that it preaches the importance of being yourself. Noel Gallagher does not like the song at all. In a 2005 interview he described it as "appalling".

The melody for this song also appears in part in The Lemonheads' song Purple Parallelogram, which was co-written between Gallagher and Evan Dando.

Top of the Pops Performance

When Oasis played "Roll With It" on British chart show Top of the Pops, the Gallagher brothers switched roles with Liam pretending to play guitar and Noel pretending to sing (equipped with Liam's tambourine). It mocked the public's inability to tell them apart and also the institution of miming on programmes such as Top of the Pops (it is widely believed that the brothers' dislike of miming led them to do it). The set ended with the band erupting in laughter at the Gallaghers' impressions of each other.

To Beer Or Not To Beer?

What ho! Noel Gallagher swapped cigarettes and alcohol for a jolly good night at the theatre.

The grumpy guitarist slipped on a posh cardigan to see his thesp mate, Jude Law, 36, star in Hamlet at London’s Wyndham theatre.

But in true Oasis style, the 42-year-old rocker was spotted looking plastered after the curtain had fallen.

Either Jude’s performance was totally mind-blowing or naughty Noel sneaked some Special Brew into the stalls.

Police Drug Warning Over V Festival

Revellers are being warned not to take drugs to this year’s V Festival on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border or they will face court action.

A condition of entry to the festival at Weston Park, near Shifnal, means that all festival-goers must allow themselves to be searched by police or security staff. Police, using drugs dogs, and stewards will be searching people as they enter the site for the festivities from August 21 to 24.

Chief Inspector Vera Bloor, from the tactical support department at Staffordshire Police, said: “Drugs aren’t welcome at V. If you take them, or deal in them, we’ll catch you and prosecute you.”

Anyone found in possession of drugs will be arrested. They will have to provide a DNA sample and have their fingerprints taken which will be kept on the police national database.

A mobile drugs laboratory and a laptop drugs-identifying machine will help officers quickly establish the type of substances seized and offenders could then be put before the next available court.

Chief Inspector Bloor said: “We work closely with the organisers to ensure that the event is a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

“It is renowned for being one of the safest in this country and we will continue to make it even safer for festival-goers and members of the local community.”

Police nationally have recovered fake drugs at concerts and found plaster-of-paris pills being sold as ecstasy and a drug called chloroquine, used to treat malaria, being sold as cocaine.

Chief Inspector Bloor added: “Obviously these fake drugs could be extremely harmful and even life-threatening. Anyone caught with fake drugs will risk arrest, being put before a court and could face a prison sentence.

“It is also important for people entering or leaving the site to remember that driving under the influence of drink or drugs puts lives at risk.”

Anyone with information on drugs at the festival is urged to report it by going to the police post on site, or by texting vfest (then message) to 07929 30 20 10, or calling confidentially through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Last Chance To Vote For Oasis As MTV's Greatest Superstar

1981: The year that saw the demise of Punk, the birth of New Romanticism, the rise of the CD, the death of Bob Marley, and John Lennon’s message for “the world to live as one” top the charts world-wide with the posthumously-released classic, Imagine.

It was also the year a new musical revolution rocked the planet - THE LAUNCH OF MTV.

From the moment Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star ushered in the world’s first dedicated music channel, nothing would be the same again.

New musical superstars such as Madonna and Def Leppard were introduced and MTV would go on to single-handedly help create and break entire movements like 80s hair metal, hip-hop, grunge, nu-metal and Britpop to name but a few.

But who’s been the biggest act to find global fame, chart success and fan worship since that very launch in ’81? We're asking you to vote for your Greatest Superstar.

Oasis: 'V Festival Is Always Our Favourite'

With a couple of weeks to go until their headline slot at V Festival, Oasis have revealed that the festival is their favourite to play.
During an interview with Eleanor Conway, the band - minus the Gallagher brothers - also fuelled their ongoing feud with Glastonbury branding festival-goers ‘yoghurt weavers’.

Speaking to Conway, bassist Andy Bell admitted, “[V Festival is] always our favourite actually, I’m not just saying that it really is.” When asked why they prefer V Festival to the likes of Glastonbury, Bell answered, “It’s the audience, it’s our audience really, it’s our people.”

Guitarist Gem Archer then interrupted saying he prefers V Festival because it is “louder for a start,” before he's heard to say, “yogurt weavers.” When asked what he meant, Archer replied, “you know, farmers - people who weave yoghurts,” referring to Glastonbury-goers.

Oasis Star Liam Gallagher Is A Fab Babysitter

Most parents would surely think twice before leaving their children in the care of Liam Gallagher.

The Oasis rocker has two kids, nine-year-old Lennon by ex-wife Patsy Kensit, and Gene, eight, by current missues Nicole Appleton.

But I had the Manc singer down as most likely to subscribe to the Frank Gallagher from Shameless school of parenting. Not so.

Nicole's pal from their All Saints days, Shaznay Lewis, says Liam's a natural with kids, including her three-year-old, Tyler.

Shaznay, expecting again in the autumn, told Closer mag: "Liam is a fantastic babysitter. When our kids get together, he takes charge. He's amazing with children, they love him."

Move over, Supernanny.
