Noel Gallagher's Thoughts On 'D'You Know What I Mean?'

Former Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher has spoken about the Oasis comeback single 'D'You Know What I Mean?'.

By the end of 1996, Oasis were one of the biggest bands on the planet. Two sold out shows at Knebworth had seen the band play to over 250,000 people while second album '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' topped the charts.

Returning with new material next year, it was clear that something wasn't quite right in the band. Recorded in a hail of drug use, 'Be Here Now' was panned by fans and critics alike after a huge hype campaign.

However the record holds a special place amongst fans. Lead single 'D'You Know What I Mean?' opens with a lengthy spell of feedback, which Noel Gallagher looked back on in a recent video.

"I arrived in London with an Adidas hold all and a battered old acoustic guitar. I had a Rolls Royce now. We arrived in a music scene when there was nothing, it was barren. We left by selling out three nights at Wembley. That's what it means".

Continuing, the guitarist mused on the extremely long length of comeback single 'D'You Know What I Mean?' which clocked in at almost eight minutes on the album edit.

"Why edit it down to four minutes when you can listen to eight minutes?" he asked. "I was so adamant in the studio. We had someone go 'it's too long' and I was like 'it's not long enough!' If you've just sold 12 million records and on Creation... their ethos was: the artist is always right".

"I wouldn't say I was right, though. I can't listen to fuckin' any of that album now!"

Oasis are set to release new singles collection 'Time Flies' later this month.

Russell Brand: Noel Gallagher Inspired Me

Russell Brand says Noel Gallagher inspired his role as rock star Aldous Snow in Get Him To The Greek.

The funnyman wanted to incorporate the Oasis star's "nonchalant" behaviour into his character.

Russell said: "I learned this kind of inherent nonchalance that rock stars have from Noel.

"I was so troubled by this nonchalance, I took to inquiring as to why it was going on. I said: 'Why are you so nonchalant, Noel?'

"Then there followed a brief time while I explained the word nonchalant. Not really - Noel Gallagher is a brilliant man and poet but I did have to explain that word.

"Then he said, 'It's because I know that anywhere I go, whatever happens to me, no matter what people say, as long as I've got the guitar and the ability to play, people will pay 10 quid to come and see me.'

"So I thought. 'That's good.' Aldous Snow is a person who knows that people will pay money if he's got his gift, whereas a comedian or whatever, you tend to be more neurotic about stuff like that."

Liam Gallagher Almost Showed Us His Beady Eye

Carlos Tevez To Record Album With Liam And Noel Gallagher?

Carlos Tevez is ready to record an album with Liam and Noel Gallagher after the World Cup.

The Manchester City forward, who has played with band Piola Vago in his Argentina homeland has discussed the move with the Man City-mad Oasis brothers.

And his best pal, Lionel Messi, reckons he has already sealed the deal.

He said: "After football, Carlito can make it big in music. He has met some famous guys who support Manchester City and I know he wants to work with them."

A source close to the Gallagher's said: "The lads haven't talked since Oasis split up but both love Tevez because he left Man United for City.

"They were well-chuffed when they found out he played music too and always said they wanted to play with his band.

"Carlos has been in contact with both of them and is hopefull they can make music together."

On This Day In Oasis History...

Don't Believe The Truth is the sixth studio album by Oasis, released on May 30, 2005. It reached #1 in the UK Albums Chart with first week sales of just under 238,000. The album entered the U.S. charts at #12, the highest any Oasis album has reached there since 1997 with Be Here Now, although its chart stay was brief. The album went triple platinum in the UK in the first week of 2006, and is the ninth fastest selling album there. As of August 2006, Don't Believe the Truth has sold approximately 2.5 million copies worldwide.

Every member of the band contributed to the writing of tracks for the album, and the album is the first where all duties were divided between the bandmembers. On some of the tracks regular bass player Andy Bell handled guitar, while Gem and Noel contributed bass to other songs. Don't Believe the Truth is the first Oasis record to feature the drumming of Zak Starkey, who replaced Oasis' longtime member Alan White.

Liam also had a larger impact on the album by his developing songwriting. Noel has said that this album is his favourite of Oasis' last four, because all members have contributed to it. This, he claims, has given it a different feel to a typically Noel-written Oasis album.

The band embarked on a massive world-wide tour and started off at the London Astoria for their Don't Believe the Truth Tour.

Recording

The recording process for Don't Believe the Truth was prolonged. The album was originally supposed to be released around summer/autumn 2004, with an initial 3-4 week session produced by Death in Vegas. The recording finally began after Alan White's departure in January 2004 at Sawmills Studios in Cornwall, the same place where Oasis had recorded their debut album Definitely Maybe. These sessions were completed but the band weren't happy with the results.

Noel has commented since on numerous occasions that there was no problem with the work done by Death In Vegas, but he felt the songs they were working on were simply not good enough to form a record, and felt a break was needed in which new material would have to be written. In Noel's words: "we were trying to polish a turd". Around 10 tracks were worked on with Death In Vegas of which, according to Noel, 6 were "not even good enough to make the b-sides". Four of the tracks which eventually appeared on the album were worked on with Death In Vegas, those songs being: "Turn Up The Sun", "Mucky Fingers", "A Bell Will Ring" and "The Meaning of Soul", although all of these had extra work done to them or were re-recorded before being released.

After a short break in which many new songs, including "Let There Be Love", "Lyla" and "Part Of The Queue" were written, the band reconvened at their Wheeler End Studios with Noel as producer. The band were joined on these sessions by The Who's drummer Zak Starkey. In June 2004, Oasis debuted two new songs from these sessions, the Liam-written "The Meaning of Soul" and the Gem-written "A Bell Will Ring" at two live shows in Poole and at the Glastonbury Festival.

After hearing of the band's production problems from Oasis manager Marcus Russell, American producer Dave Sardy expressed interest in taking over production duties. Sardy was given tapes of existing recording sessions to mix, and after his work was praised by the band, he arrived in the UK to oversee new recording sessions at Olympic Studios in London. These sessions didn't last long before he asked the band to travel to Los Angeles and re-record most of the album there, as he felt more comfortable working in a studio closer to home. With the band eventually agreeing to this, recording sessions began at Capitol Studios in October 2004 with the band spending around 9 weeks there.

Release

The decision to have the leadoff single, "Lyla", on the album was a controversial one, prompted by the label's feeling that there wasn't a suitable lead single among the tracks originally presented. As a result, the decision was taken to record "Lyla", a song which Noel had written and demoed a year previously, but which wasn't recorded by the band during the previous recording sessions. It was decided that Dave Sardy would remix Noel's original demo with Liam recording a set of lead vocals and Zak adding a fresh drum track. "Lyla" reached number one on the UK Singles Chart and number nineteen on the U.S. Modern Rock Tracks chart. After having initial reservations about the choice of the first single being taken out of the hands of the band, Noel, who initially wanted "Mucky Fingers" to be the first single, has now reluctantly conceded that the song has indeed "done the business".

In April 2005, four tracks from a promo disc leaked: "The Meaning of Soul", "Mucky Fingers", "Keep the Dream Alive", and "Let There Be Love". The full album found its way onto the Internet on May 3, 2005, when Apple Inc. accidentally put the album up early for sale on their iTunes Music Store service in Germany. While there was no official comment by Apple or by Oasis management, it was speculated that Apple simply got "May 30" confused with "May 03" or "May 3".

A Night Out With Liam Gallagher

Sauntering along Central Park West, Liam Gallagher looked as if he’d just stepped off Carnaby Street in London circa 1969. Turned out in a black velvet jacket with an upturned collar, skinny scarf around his neck and hair combed forward all modlike, the former Oasis frontman would have fit in well alongside Brian Jones and Ray Davies in their heyday.

“Not a lot of people look cool these days — like my cool,” said Mr. Gallagher, 37, who turned more than a few heads when sidling up to the bar in the Ritz-Carlton. “Everybody plays it down, don’t they?”

The Englishman was in New York promoting his clothing line, Pretty Green, which was introduced in Europe last year and in the United States in April. The name was lifted from a song about money by the mod revivalists The Jam because of a lyric that rings true for Mr. Gallagher: “And they didn’t teach me that in school/It’s something that I learnt on my own.”

“They didn’t teach Liam how to be a rock star,” said Steve Allen, his business partner and longtime friend. When it comes to his clothing line, Mr. Gallagher is the first to admit he is winging it. Pretty Green represents his personal style — parkas, desert boots and paisley scarves — and is popular in England with musicians and soccer players.

“I don’t want just anybody wearing it,” said Mr. Gallagher, who won’t put his name on any item of clothing that he himself would not wear. “And people go, ‘Oh, beggars can’t be choosers.’ Well, I ain’t a beggar, you know what I mean?” he said.

Nor is he the type who aims to be seen in the front row of fashion shows. He is, as he put it, “not Victoria Beckham.” Though they are both fixtures in the British press. The implosion of his band Oasis last year racked up quite a few column inches. A sibling squabble backstage in Paris ended with his brother, the guitarist Noel Gallagher, walking out on the band they had started some 18 years earlier, for what he said would be the last time.

“In hindsight it was the best thing that’s ever happened, because we’re free to do whatever we want,” said Liam Gallagher, who still has not spoken to Noel.

He plans to unveil his new band later this year, and for now is enjoying his recent anointing as the Greatest Frontman of All Time by the British rock magazine Q. Is there an up-and-comer on the music scene to whom he is ready to pass the baton? Not yet — if ever, he said. “They gotta mug me for it.”

Oasis Fan Documentry To Air On 12th June

The Oasis fan documentary that has been previously reported here, has appeared in the provisional Channel 4 listings for Sunday 12th June (Sat night) at 12am (UK Only).

It has a two hour slot, so it will probably be cut to around 90mins to include adverts.

Paul Weller To Team Up With Liam Gallagher

Paul Weller is to team up with Liam Gallagher to design clothes for the former Oasis frontman's Pretty Green label.

Weller, who is set to finish his five-night residency at London's Royal Albert Hall tonight (May 28), has already been in touch with Gallagher about joining the clothing label, according to Prettygreen.com.

"I've got designs for suits, jackets, shoes - I've been talking to Liam about them," he explained. "It's the same principle as what he's [Gallagher] doing, really - stuff I'd wear myself."

Weller also revealed that he has been wearing a Pretty Green suit made especially for the gigs this week.

"Nick [Holland], Pretty Green's creative director measured me up and it turned out top," Weller enthused. "It's double-breasted, grey with a chalk stripe. Almost like a gangster suit, but with a little kick to the trousers."

Gallagher named Pretty Green after Weller's song of the same name, which was recorded by his first group The Jam.
