Argies Lost To Oasis

Argentina ace Lionel Messi tried to psych up his team-mates for the World Cup quarter-final by playing Oasis - before they were thumped 4-0.

Messi had the Manchester band's 1994 track Rock And Roll Star blasted out on the team coach stereo on Saturday.

A source said: "He was really keen to hype up the team with this rousing anthem. Unfortunately it didn't produce the desired result."

The South Americans were battered by Germany in South Africa.

Barcelona superstar Messi, 23, was introduced to Oasis's music by team-mate and Man City ace Carlos Tevez. Oasis's Noel Gallagher recorded a TV good luck message for the final. It has now been axed.

Best Track From Oasis' 'The Masterplan'

This month the poll in the right side menu is for the best best track from 'The Masterplan'.

The Masterplan is a compilation album, comprising B-sides which never made it onto an album.

The album was originally intended for release only in areas such as the United States and Japan, where the tracks were only available on expensive European import singles.

It was first released in late 1998. The Masterplan reached #2 in the UK where it went platinum, and #51 in the United States. However, it did gain top spot in various charts around the world, going on to sell 2 million copies. Four songs from the album appear on compilation album Stop the Clocks.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Sunday Morning Call" is a song by British rock band Oasis taken from their fourth studio album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, and was released as the third and final single from it on 3 July 2000, peaking at #4 in the UK charts. The song is written and sung by Noel Gallagher, who took over lead vocal from brother Liam Gallagher on an A-side for the first time since "Don't Look Back in Anger" in 1996.

Though the song has the same anthemic feel that popularised many Oasis songs, and departs from the psychedelic feel of Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, which had been poorly received by critics, it received a mixed critical reception. NME described it as "a dreary thing indeed", whereas Allmusic described it as a "self-consciously mature departure from the group's usual ebullience... a deliberately mellow, mid-tempo [song]".



The music video is a take on the Jack Nicholson film One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, with characters resembling McMurphy and Nurse Ratched. It was filmed in an old mental institution in Vancouver, Canada and features Scottish actor James Cunningham, who has previously starred in the original play of Trainspotting. Unlike the film, the video begins with the McMurphy character escaping his home and giving chase to the authorities, and ends in a football match. While the inmates celebrate a victory, Oasis are seen watching from the asylum window, and Noel Gallagher makes a 'wanker' hand gesture at Cunningham.

Although unconfirmed, there was widespread speculation at the time that the song was inspired by Noel's friend Kate Moss.

To date this is the only Oasis single on which Liam Gallagher does not provide vocals on any of the songs.

FAO Liam Gallagher: A Guide To Making An Oasis Biopic

If Gallagher is serious about making a film about Oasis, here are some pitfalls he would do well to avoid.

Despite explicitly telling Xan Brooks a month ago that he wouldn't follow up his Beatles film with any movies about "unkempt eyebrows", it looks as though Liam Gallagher has already caved in. In an interview on his clothing label's website, Gallagher has admitted that he'd like to make an Oasis biopic "very soon".

And, at least in theory, there's nothing wrong with that. But the music biopic is a genre fraught with unimaginable peril. One wrong move and Gallagher could end up with an epic turkey on his hands. Better that he should simply follow this set of firmly defined rules to avoid repeating the mistakes of previous biopics. Don't worry, Liam. They're idiot-proof ...

1. Cast appropriately

Remember the moral of Kevin Spacey's Beyond the Sea. If the film is about a man who shot to fame at the age of 22 before dying at 37, don't cast a 45-year-old. And, if you do cast a 45-year-old, don't try to mask it by constructing a bizarre meta-narrative where a younger version of the character sporadically appears to berate the actor for being too old. In short, Peter O'Toole probably shouldn't play Bonehead.

2. Avoid lyric-speak

For some reason, music biopics seem to delight in showing dialogue that will later turn up as the lyrics to a song, from Reese Witherspoon's "It burns! It burns!" breakdown in Walk the Line to the moment where the Beach Boys clumsily shoehorn the entire chorus of Fun, Fun, Fun into an awkward street-corner conversation during Summer Dreams. So basically there should be no pre-fame scenes where Noel walks down a hall fairly slowly while realising that he paradoxically appears to be travelling faster than a cannonball.

3. Drugs are bad

Even if it never happened in real life, the Oasis biopic needs to contain a sequence – around two thirds of the way in – where the band's drug use gives way to harrowing, near-death addiction. Only then can the band pull themselves together in time for their triumphant phoenix-like, final-act rebirth, which, in the case of Oasis, would be the moderately disappointing chart placing of their final single Falling Down.

4. Someone needs to die

Sorry to have to point this out, but if Liam Gallagher wants the Oasis film to do any business at all, then one of Oasis needs to die before it gets released. Death is why Ray won an Oscar, and why Walk the Line won an Oscar, and why people loved everything from The Doors to Sid & Nancy to Control. Guigsy might be wise to lock himself indoors for the next 18 months or so.

5. Don't get involved

Liam might be the one with all the stories, but he should remember that no good ever came from handing creative control to anyone who was actually there. Last year's Notorious is a perfect example of this – if you wondered why Notorious BIG's mother and Sean Combs came out of it looking particularly squeaky clean, it's because they were producers. And if, when Scorsese's Frank Sinatra biopic is finally released, you wonder why Sinatra's dark side has been completely whitewashed out, you'd do well to remember the creative control afforded to his daughter. If people want to see Liam Gallagher behaving like an arsehole – which they will – he should quickly learn not to meddle.

6. Be nothing like Summer Dreams: The Story of the Beach Boys

Without question the worst music biopic that's ever been created. Badly cast, badly written and guilty of committing every single biopic crime in the book – plus it features Charles Manson in a lady's wig! – Gallagher should watch this film in its entirety and take extensive notes. Or, alternatively, decide not to make an Oasis biopic at all.

On This Day In Oasis History...

Heathen Chemistry is the fifth studio album by English rock band Oasis, first released on July 1st 2002. It sold over 1 million copies in the UK, ending up in the top ten best selling albums of 2002, and about 4 million worldwide as of 2005.

Heathen Chemistry was received more warmly than the previous Oasis album, Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, by both fans and critics alike. It spawned four singles, each of which made the top three in the UK charts: "The Hindu Times", their sixth number one single in the UK, "Stop Crying Your Heart Out", a song made famous as it was played on the BBC when the English football team were knocked out of the World Cup, the Double A-Side, sung by Noel — "Little By Little/She Is Love" — and "Songbird", the first single written by Liam.

This album was the last one to feature the band's longtime drummer, Alan White, who left in early 2004, with Noel Gallagher claiming White's commitment to the band wasn't up to scratch. He was effectively replaced with Ringo Starr's son, Zak Starkey.

Album History

The title of the album, according to Noel, came from a t-shirt he bought in Ibiza which featured a logo reading, "The Society of Heathen Chemists". Similarly, the name of the first single, "The Hindu Times", originated from a logo on a t-shirt that read the same thing, which Noel saw during a photo shoot for GQ's 100 Greatest Guitarists edition. The name was given to the track when it was just an instrumental, as all the instrumentals of this album were given actual titles as opposed to "Instrumental 1", etc., and the name stuck once the track was finished.

The album was recorded during 2001–early 2002, and was the first studio album written and recorded with the two new members, bassist Andy Bell and rhythm guitarist Gem Archer. Bell and Archer wrote one track each, and Liam Gallagher contributed three, thus the album signalled the end of Noel Gallagher songs dominating Oasis albums (though Liam had contributed "Little James" to Standing on the Shoulder of Giants).

The release of the album was overshadowed by an internet leak of all 11 tracks almost three months prior to release. However, listeners of the commercially released album heard slight differences to two tracks, "Little By Little" and "Better Man".

Liam Gallagher To Open Flagship Pretty Green Store In London

Liam Gallagher's 'Pretty Green' will soon be opening it's first store in London.

Speaking in a interview earlier this year with live4ever.uk.com Liam said: "The main thing is to try to get our own little store, our own little shop out here at some point, if all goes well. We're looking at a place in London - and Tokyo would be a good place because we have a bit of a fan base out there, a lot of people are buying from out there.

And definitely New York, if you do one in Tokyo, you got to do one in New York, yeah?"

Lionel Messi: I’ll Score Goal For Noel Gallagher

Noel Gallagher has a good reason to watch the Germany v Argentina World Cup clash on Saturday - because one of the world's best footballers will be playing with him in mind.

Lionel Messi has vowed to beat the German squad for the sake of his favourite band Oasis.

The striker said: "If they love England as much as they do Manchester City, you can tell them from me I will do everything I can to defeat the team who knocked their beloved England out of the Cup."

Messi has been listening to Oasis tunes on his iPod before games in South Africa.

The Barcelona forward would like to meet the Gallagher brothers after his Cup duties.

He added: "Maybe we can all watch a game at Manchester City."

Ah, but he'll have to schedule in two City games as the siblings still aren't talking.

Happy Birthday Tony McCarroll

Anthony "Tony" McCarroll (Born June 27 1972) (38 today) was one of the founding members of English rock group Oasis, as their drummer from 1991 to April 1995.

Born in Levenshulme, Manchester, England, McCarroll joined pre-Oasis incarnation The Rain in 1990, replacing their drum machine, and linking up with rhythm guitarist Paul Arthurs, bassist Paul McGuigan and singer Chris Hutton. Hutton was later sacked, and replaced by Liam Gallagher. Liam's brother Noel soon joined with a bag full of songs that were to make Oasis famous.

Perhaps McCarroll should have noticed the growing tensions between himself and the rest of the band when they buried him alive in the 1994 video for "Live Forever." This tension soon grew greatly between himself and Noel. McCarroll had been angered by the "£1,000 incident", as the band called it, which occurred after Creation advanced them that sum to purchase new equipment.

Having already spent £600 of his own money on drums, McCarroll found that Noel refused to spend any of the cash on drum skins and instead bought a new guitar. He felt Gallagher was intimidated by him. For his part, Gallagher made his feelings clear with his favoured trick of pretending to forget McCarroll's name during interviews. Noel has since been blatantly derogatory about McCarroll's skills as a drummer.

McCarroll was asked to leave the band in 1995 after rumours of a punch-up with Liam. McCarroll has since denied this. His last job with the band was their first performance of Some Might Say (the last Oasis song he played on) on Top of the Pops.

On the last day of April 1995, McCarroll's departure was announced and soon the fight was abandoned as the main reason - instead, Oasis explained, his drumming just wasn't up to it. "I like Tony as a geezer but he wouldn't have been able to drum the new songs," explained Noel. McCarroll was replaced by Alan White.

After leaving the band, McCarroll travelled over the world for some years.

More On Tony McCarroll's Oasis Book

As previously reported former drummer Tony McCarroll is set to release a warts and all book this autumn about his time with Oasis.

Titled 'Oasis: The Truth, the Noel Truth, is Nothing Like the Truth', the book will detail his time with the Manchester outfit from 1991 to 1995 and beyond.

Paul Weller On The Gallagher Brothers And More

One element of pop culture Weller does have an interest is fashion. With their dapper suits and neat shoes, The Jam were a sartorial as well as musical influence to a generation of bands.

Weller's friend and fan Liam Gallagher, formerly of Oasis, recently started a fashion line, Pretty Green, and invited the Modfather to design some clothes for it.

Weller wore one of the Pretty Green suits at his Albert Hall gigs.

While he hasn't begun any designs just yet, Weller says it's something he's always had an interest in. Rather than wearing the ripped clothes of their punk contemporaries, The Jam went for more stylish attire.

"We used to get our suits made up at this little tailor's that is long gone now, just behind Carnaby St, which on reflection were absolutely shocking really, because you'd wear them once on stage and you'd get them dry-cleaned and they'd shrink – to a size where they'd fit a chimp.

"And then we had some Jam shoes made up at a place called Shellys. We used to get stuff made up because you couldn't find it at that time, you had to get it made, really."

While those Jam outfits would probably now be considered collector's items, they have since disappeared into rock history.

"It's gone to the ether along the way. Probably a lot of it was lost or stolen, or was just thrown away because it was so shrunken you couldn't wear it anyway."

Weller is friends with both of Oasis's Gallagher brothers, whose split last year was allegedly exacerbated when older brother Noel poked fun at Liam's clothing label.

"They are very different, what can I say? Well, they're both lovely, they're both my friends, so I have to be careful what I say, really.

"Liam has got his own very definite vision of the world, of how the world works and his place in it. And I can't say what that is because I couldn't even hazard a guess, but he has got it anyway.

"And I guess you could say Noel's a bit more down to earth. No, he's a lot more down to earth.

"I love to hear Liam's theories on life. It's different. It's like listening to an ancient philosopher. I think he's really fascinating."

Russell Brand Turns To Noel Gallagher For Marriage Advice

Russell Brand is planning to live out his Robin Hood fantasies for his upcoming bachelor party. “I’ll do adventurous things and activities.

My friend who is my best man says we’re going to go white-water rafting and shoot arrows,” Brand says on Britain’s Capital Breakfast Show radio program. “We’ll be like merry men. Perhaps we’ll become outlaws, bandits for a while.”

Brand also admits he’s been turning to famous pals — like Oasis’ Noel Gallagher — for advice on keeping future wife Katy Perry happy. “I asked Noel how to get by in a relationship and he said, ‘Just say yes to everything they say,’” Brand says. “It works, I’ve been using that system and it’s working well.”
