Liam Gallagher Offers Olive Branch To Brother After Chat With Nephew

Liam Gallagher is close to ending his long-running bust-up with his brother Noel, after his sibling's four-year-old son reminded him of the importance of a happy family.

The former Oasis stars have famously clashed throughout their career, but the simmering rivalry came to a head in 2009 when they had a furious fight backstage at a gig in Paris, France.

The incident sparked the end of the Wonderwall hitmakers, with guitarist Noel quitting the band hours later, and the two brothers have not spoken to each other since.

But in a new interview, singer Liam admits he has softened his stance and can see an end to the feud after a conversation with Noel's four-year-old son Donovan reminded him of the importance of family.

He's also adamant "life's too short" to fall out with relatives, and admits he has "changed a little bit" in recent months.

Asked if his bust-up with Noel will last for years, Liam tells Nme magazine, "Nah, man, no way man, nah. Because you think about it, don't you - you think life's too f**king short. All this b**locks."

When he is then asked if he can "see the end of it coming already", he replies, "Yeah. I suppose so, yeah. Because I spoke to his kid the other day on the phone. I thought it was (Noel's daughter) Anais, but it was the little one. And it was like, 'Oh, alright uncle Liam,' and you think to yourself, (the fighting is) all b**locks, innit.

"But I stand by everything that went on. And I think I've changed a little bit... I'm still me, so Noel's gonna have to get over it."

Noel Gallagher Test Wings For 'High Flying' Solo Launch

He's already selling well at home in the U.K. His sound includes Oasis-type numbers and disco. 'I haven't lost the sense of wonder of writing songs,' he says.

"No one told me Neil Young recorded here!" Noel Gallagher exclaimed, standing amid stuffed polar bears and ornate Italianate antiques in the grand room of the Paramour. The Silver Lake mansion is where Young made "Le Noise," and it's where Gallagher shot his music video in August for "If I Had a Gun…," the first U.S. single off his solo debut, "High Flying Birds," released Tuesday.

Gallagher is both an apt pupil of rock history and a part of it: He rose to fame in the '90s as the guitarist and songwriter for Oasis, penning hits like "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" that transformed the Britpop group from Manchester, England, into superstars, selling more than 70 million albums worldwide. On the flip side of that fame was a sibling rivalry that provided endless tabloid fodder. The fisticuffs, press taunting and onstage blowouts between Gallagher and the band's frontman, his younger brother Liam, became the stuff of rock legend.

Despite the constant friction, Oasis continued to perform together until August 2009, when an alleged backstage altercation between the siblings before a Paris concert sounded the group's death knell. Apart, the Gallaghers supplied more grist for the gossip mill. Liam entered the fray first, forming the group Beady Eye and released "Different Gear, Still Speeding" — a successful if tepidly reviewed effort that came out in March.

At a July news conference, Noel announced his own solo plans and then claimed Liam canceled a high-profile festival appearance because he was hung over (and not from laryngitis as his brother claimed). The younger Gallagher immediately responded with threats of a lawsuit. "If people are interested in the music, great," Noel said. "As for the stuff that's going on around all that — really, if you're getting your information from the British press, be wary.

Media circus aside, Noel seemed unsure about how he'd be received as a solo artist: "A Noel Gallagher audience — what is that?" he wondered aloud in "It's Never Too Late to Be What U Might Have Been," a documentary about the making of "High Flying Birds." The numbers, however, reveal that Noel does indeed have a following (and holds a leading edge over his brother). His album received three times the number of Amazon pre-orders than Beady Eye's LP and sold nearly double the copies in the U.K. its first week out. The first night of Noel's two-day performance at UCLA's Royce Hall on Nov. 17-18 has already sold out.

Also, Noel Gallagher's single, "If I Had a Gun…," has made inroads at influential radio stations like L.A.'s KROQ-FM (106.7). "The response from commercial radio has been really positive," explains KROQ music director Lisa Worden. "Oasis' songs remain really big library tracks for the station, but Noel having new music on KROQ exposes him to younger listeners."

"Between us and KROQ, there's lots of support," notes Sky Daniels, a revered music-industry figure and current program director for KCSN-FM (88.5), where Gallagher's new material is in power rotation. "I'm always trying to find new music from '90s heroes — and in the case of Noel's record, I was blown away."

According to Nic Harcourt, the L.A. radio tastemaker who currently broadcasts a show on KCSN, Gallagher has reached new levels of respectability. "In the '90s, you heard Oasis between Soundgarden and Pearl Jam," Harcourt says. "Now you'll hear Noel Gallagher next to Tom Waits and Laura Marling." That's reflected in renewed critical acclaim: U.K. newspaper the Guardian raved that "High Flying Birds" represents some of Gallagher's "best tunes in 15 years."

The album also breaks new artistic ground for Gallagher. While he has guested on club grooves by the Chemical Brothers, Gallagher has never written a dance floor track of his own — until now. "My wife said, 'There's no getting around it — this is disco,'" Gallagher said of his track "AKA … What a Life!" off of the new CD. "It made me slightly uneasy: It's a dance song, and I can't dance. But once I got used to it, I decided it's one of the best things I've ever done."

Elsewhere, Gallagher's solo material evokes Oasis in the best way. "AKA … Broken Arrow" recalls the irresistible psychedelic hooks of "Wonderwall"; with its chunky riffs and chanted chorus, "Dream On" suggests "Morning Glory"-era stompers like "Roll With It."

The parallels make sense considering much of the material on "High Flying Birds was written years ago when he was still in Oasis. "I've been hearing some of these songs for years," says Dave Sardy, the studio guru who co-produced "High Flying Birds." "Noel's got stuff tucked away from when he wrote 'Wonderwall.'"

Gallagher and Sardy did significant recording for the album in L.A., holing up at Sunset Sound for sessions. "'Led Zeppelin II' was done there, and 'Riders on the Storm,'" Gallagher marvels. "I've grown to love California: It's the dream of every English musician to come here and work in the sunshine. To walk up Sunset Boulevard, knowing you're going to make music — that's it.

"Even though I'm older, I haven't lost the sense of wonder of writing songs," he says. "I don't think I ever will. It's all me, isn't it? I'm can't sack myself — although that day will come, believe you me!"

Liam Gallagher Feels No Pressure To Make Beady Eye As Successful As Oasis

Beady Eye front-man Liam Gallagher has said when questioned by the NME, if he feels any pressure to make Beady Eye as successful as Oasis.

Liam said "Nope. Not at all. Beady Eye is already a success, in my eye. Because we're doing it. And we've got plans to do it again next year. So if it becomes as big as Oasis, it does. If it doesn't, then it doesn't."

The singer was also asked does he does he feel any disappointment when gigs don't sell out?

He told the NME "Nope. Thrive on it more, man. The less people the better. No seriously, man. It's great when it's sold out and all that tackle, but it's a bit more of a challenge when there's no cunt there."

Beady Eye kick off their UK tour in Blackpool on Friday.

Noel Gallagher "I Don't Feel Like A Rock Star Ever Until The Lights Go Down"

Oasis fans have long wondered what the Manchester band's records would have sounded like without Liam Gallagher in the mix, and the 'Sis's recent breakup has answered all that. Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds (Mercury) is everything Oasis fans have been waiting for — gorgeously romantic and effortlessly melodic, even if it wasn't the ideal outcome for the songwriter himself. "The fact that the record exists is because I was forced into making it," the elder Gallagher explains over the phone from the UK. "It wasn't something that I wanted to do. I don't want a solo career, I'd much rather be in a band. Unfortunately, the band I was in, I can't be in that band anymore. It was just fucked up."

Making the album, which arrives a few months after Liam's Beady Eye project, came relatively easy. "This record was absolutely plain sailing," Noel says. "Records are only as good as the material, and the material was great. I wasn't relying on anyone else. I get anxious about making records. Once you've finished it, you've pretty much accepted whether it's good or not. If it wasn't any good you wouldn't put it out. Now I'm on my own as an independent artist; I paid for it, I can scrap it if I like."

It's a good thing he didn't. Although a few of the songs seem like they could fit on an Oasis record as pace-changers, there's a generally more intimate quality here, less guitar soloing, little over-sized feedback. There's a heavier sadness to his already world-weary but determined voice, as in the confident, blasé brass-pop of "The Death of You and Me" or the iconic "Wonderwall"-style chord structure on the wistful single "If I Had a Gun."

"Stadium rock is big and loud in your face, you get drunk and shout," Gallagher says. "This is not that. I guess it's more romantic, a bit more love."

That means less of a wall of sound to hide behind in the live setting, and one fewer frontmen, in particular, to take the brunt of the attention. "I'm just learning what to do when I'm on stage. I haven't got anything to say, d'you know what I mean? I'm not sure what people are expecting. The music side of it is great. There's another thing that people want, I don't know what it is. . . . "

It's hard to imagine someone of Gallagher's success and vaunted ego feeling insecure on stage. It's hard, really, even to think of him as a regular person, no matter how much evidence you have to the contrary that famous musicians are just people doing a weird job. Is he still a real human being? "When I'm standing in queue at a supermarket or drugstore, I'm not thinking I really should be wearing shades or a cape or carrying the little pet chimp. I don't think about it, I don't feel like a rock star ever until the lights go down."

When the lights go down for his upcoming Boston date, he'll be reaching back into the past for a few Oasis songs, just don't call them that. "I don't think of them as Oasis songs anymore. They're Noel Gallagher songs. I wrote them. They're only Oasis songs when Oasis are playing them."

The new band isn't Oasis by any stretch, and that's probably a good thing. For now, Gallagher is considering this a new start, so there's little over-the-top diva behavior going on with his touring band. Not yet anyway, he jokes. "Oh, for fuck's sake, if all goes according to plan they won't be allowed to look me in the eye in three years."

Until then, starting over can do great things for the creative spirit. But sometimes without having anyone to tell you when you're shit — a younger brother with a beady eye, for example — things can get indulgent. Does he have such an editor anymore? "Well, I haven't done anything shit yet."

Liam Gallagher Says Johnny Depp Would Be "Mega" For His Beatles Movie

Liam Gallagher is working on a big screen adaptation of Richard DiLello's book, "The Longest Cocktail Party", about the last days of The Beatles at their Apple Corps record label.

Gallagher told the current issue of the NME Magazine "Well, it's not started yet, but it's gonna be mega, man. Script's finished, and we're just waiting to tie a few things up with Apple, to see if we can use some of their tunes. And then we'll be able to see what kind of actors we wanna get. But it's gonna happen, man, definitely, next year. All I really want is to get [journalist and Beatles press officer] Derek Taylor sorted. I reckon Johnny Depp would play a mega Derek Taylor. Whether he'd do it or not, those are two different things."

Gallagher will also get a chance to show off his acting skills in the film, according to director Michael Winterbottom.

Winterbottom says, "Liam will have a part in it. He's all over it. It's about the mad chaos of Apple, so it's not dissimilar to '24 Hour Party People'... I've met him (Gallagher) a few times. He seems like a nice guy."

Former Oasis Man To Appear On The Next Beady Eye Album

Former Oasis man Bonehead has asked Beady Eye if he can play on a track on the band's new album'.

Liam Gallagher told the new edition of the NME "Yeah man. Why not? He's gotta bring his Freddie Starr wig along with him though. He's a geezer, Bonehead, he's been to see some of the gigs."

Andy Bell added "Yeah, he's been to a lot of gigs, man. He's a lovely man. He's always welcome."

Bonehead left Oasis in 1999, speaking about his departure from the band, he said, "When we first came out in 1994 to sign that deal we were just five lads of the street, there was a real sort of energy in that band. A lot happened very fast and we reached a great height very fast, by the time we came to record 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' we were all living and rented this big chateau in the south of France that belonged to Christian Dior."

"To reach that stage then you should be having so much fun, and that should have been so much fun and for me personally there was no fun there and that spark has gone.

"I just thought, 'That's it for me, the old gang thing had gone for me and it does not feel right.' And if I had carried on and finished that session and then gone on and done a two-year world tour to promote it I would not have been giving 100% to the band and the fans."

Beady Eye To Return To The Studio Early Next Year

Liam Gallagher has revealed that Beady Eye will be going into the studio early next year, and will be messing about with what tunes they've got.

The band released their debut album Different Gear, Still Speeding earlier this year, and start their UK tour later this week in Blackpool

Speaking on the new songs Beady Eye front man Liam said "This one's gotta be like... eleven f**king classics on there, man. It's gotta be a life-changing record,".

Andy Bell said that the band can improve on debut album 'Different Gear, Still Speeding "Looking back on the first one, we know how we can improve it. I still love it, I still think it's great, but we can better it,".

Speaking to the current issue of the NME on of how the sounds might develop from 'Different Gear, Still Speeding', Liam said: "I just think it's gonna be a bit more of a grand affair."

Gem Archer added "Without sounding too up our own arses, it's just gonna be more of a constructed piece of work, whereas with this one, we knew it was a debut record."

The band said that Beady Eye fans can expect "massive" sounding songs, complete with strings, and even trumpets.

Liam said "Noel's all like, 'I'd mention trumpets to Liam and he'd fucking spin out' and all that," scoffs Liam. "I wanted Henry The Hoover on 'Better Man' and on 'Born On A Different cloud' as well. I remember our kid going 'What the fuck are you doing?' like that. I was like, 'We're fucking... experimenting, man'. And he was just like that (looks disapproving), tutted and walked out. And it's just like, a Hoover's always good. Henry The Hoover, man..."

Check out this week's NME that has a Q&A with the Band, with questions submitted by fans and friends.

Noel Gallagher's Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere (Vol.2) Part Six

Y'know, life can be a wonderful thing... Full of ups and downs. Twists and turns. Ins and outs and roundabouts. For long periods life can be mundane (not mine… mine's fuckin' mental!!!). And the further you get along the road of life, the more you've experienced, the less there is to experience… or so I thought!!

I have been woken with the news that for the 2nd week running I sit proudly at the top of GRAZIA magazine's column of lust!!!! Number fuckin' one, baby!!!!!!

Seriously Coldplay, you might be selling records by the skip-load and think that you're operating in some kind of musical CD-selling "Para, para, paradise", but the girls back home have spoken, and they're speaking the language of lust.

My blimmin' albums don't even stay at #1 for 2 weeks!!!

My missus is so proud, as will my mam be.

I dunno… free driving lessons? GRAZIA magazine? Where will it end?

Loose Women? Strictly Come Dancing, probably. The sky's the limit!!!!!

In other news… The gig last night at the legendary Massey Hall was great. Most enjoyable. Even had a good laugh with the audience. Looking forward to tonight.

It's raining, by the way.

In a bit.

GD.
