Oasis

The Smiths

I caught up this week with one of our generations greatest songwriters, Noel Gallagher, the heart and soul of legendary Manchester outfit OASIS, who has just embarked on a solo journey under the moniker of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds.
We discussed his fantastic debut solo release -the eponymous new album that topped the UK charts last week with over 120,000 sold- and talked about Noel’s history in San Francisco, the Stone Roses reunion, his favorite Bay Area band, whether the Smiths or Oasis would reform first AND how Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth once attempted to steal Oasis’ Jack Daniels from their dressing room at our Live 105 Xmas show in Berkeley back in 1995.

Oasis

It's fair to say Noel Gallagher won’t be sitting down to Christmas dinner with Liam after he said he wished his brother had been beaten up.
The 44-year-old rocker was assaulted during an Oasis concert in Canada in 2008 but Noel can’t understand why he was targeted when Liam was on stage and deserved it more. Charming.
Noel – who quit Oasis in 2009 following a bust-up with his sibling – said: “That had nothing to do with me. That guy was a f***ing moron. Why would he attack me and not Liam? C’mon.
“That’s all I wanted to say to him afterwards: ‘Leave me alone. I write the f***ing songs. F**k up the guy over there with the glasses.”

Coldplay
Noel Gallagher

Noel Gallagher and Coldplay have signed up to a new scheme – which gives fans access to live shows and exclusive material by both artists in return for donations to charities.
Titled Blue Dot, the project will distribute dots to users people who have volunteered, donated or promoted charities through social media sites and BBC Children In Need has already signed up.
Set to launch later this month, the dots will act as a currency, which will give users access to tickets for tours by acts including The Stone Roses, Coldplay, Noel Gallagher and Annie Mac, the opportunity to shadow Denise Lewis and top execs from Facebook, Yahoo and Wired and free audio books and £10 donated to the charity of their choice.
However it is also looking for more musicians to take part.
Blue Dot founder Chris Ward said: “I created Blue Dot, as a genuinely new & innovative way to enable every single Cause to create that same impact, every single day of the year,” and added the scheme had already generated a positive reaction from users.

Noel Gallagher
Oasis

“Stadium rock is not what I’m really about. I’m just about writing songs . . . whether they be jazz or disco or psychedelic pop - I can deliver them,’’ says Gallagher
It may seem strange to hear Noel Gallagher say “I’m learning how to be onstage,’’ since the former guitarist and chief songwriter for Oasis has spent the better part of his life performing. But just a few shows into the first tour for his solo project Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, which comes to the Citi Wang Theatre tomorrow night, Gallagher is learning that moving just a few steps over to the spot his younger brother Liam occupied as the frontman for Oasis has brought him into a whole new world. And he likes it.
“I didn’t think I’d be, after six gigs, really enjoying the center-stage thing but it’s all fallen into place quite brilliantly,’’ he says on the phone from London in his unmistakable Manchester accent.
Although he resists the descriptor “nervous’’ as imprecise, Gallagher had some anxieties about striking out on his own after the dissolution of the multiplatinum Brit pop-rock band in 2009, following the final falling out between the endlessly combative siblings.
“ ‘Am I going to be a solo artist? Am I going to be in a band?’ ’’ he recalls asking himself, admitting that he “missed the band thing pretty quickly.’’
“I think that what was a slightly bit frustrating about the end of Oasis was I was trying to write stadium rock and it was obvious making this record that stadium rock is not what I’m really about. I’m just about writing songs. It doesn’t matter what the songs are - whether they be jazz or disco or psychedelic pop - I can deliver them. I can do it.’’
While there isn’t anything on the just released, eponymous Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds album that would likely be described as jazz, the singer-songwriter does stretch a bit into a few areas beyond his familiar Beatles-Kinks-Jam axis. A New Orleans-style brass section adorns the lilting “The Death of You & Me,’’ the tremulous “Stop the Clocks’’ - one of a few Oasis holdovers - culminates in a nutty, time-shifting coda and “AKA . . . What a Life!’’ is a straight up contemporary dance rocker.

Noel Gallagher Not Desperate But Adds ' If I need the money, I will do it,....'
VIDEO ONLY WORKS IN THE USA...
Early Thursday (November 10), before Noel Gallagher stopped by the MTV Newsroom to talk up his just-released High Flying Birds solo album, brother and former Oasis mate Liam was quoted by NME as saying that Noel was "desperate" to reunite the band.
Given the sheer amount of acrimony between the brothers since Oasis split in 2009 (with elder Gallagher citing "verbal and violent intimidation" as the main reason), this came as news to Noel, who told us he wasn't desperate to have anything to do with his former band — now and forever.
"I'll tell you what happened," he sighed. "When I first started doing interviews [for Birds], a guy — we'll refer to him as 'a French guy' — he asked me: Did I have any regrets about leaving Oasis? And I said, initially, that I did. And he said, 'Oh, what about this solo project?' and I said, 'Yeah, but it would have been great' — would have been, this is key, concentrate on this — 'would have been great if we could have worked on solo projects and maybe got back together for 2015.'
"But obviously, that's not a story, and journalists being the cunning foxes that they are, he thought to himself ... 'If I just say "could" and "would," mon dieu, I have myself a story!' " Gallagher continued. "So that goes all the way around the Internet, and then it's like this mythical reunion is going to take place. ... It isn't going to take place. Do I look desperate? No, I'm not desperate at all."
While he's primarily in the States to begin the promotional cycle for the genuinely quite excellent High Flying Birds album with a run of shows in major markets (Philadelphia, Boston, New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco), Gallagher knows there's always going to be fans who want nothing more than a full-blown Oasis reunion — preferably in 2015, the 20th anniversary of their massive (What's the Story) Morning Glory? album. But for that to occur, Gallagher joked he's going to have to endure some rather dark times in the very near future, because desperate, he most certainly is not.
"I will say this, though: If I need the money, I will do it," he laughed. "I don't need a lot of money, though, and here's hoping I won't anytime soon. No, I'm not desperate. My sh--'s not gone down the toilet yet."

Paul Weller

Paul Weller has responded to Noel Gallagher's claim that he is X-Factor fan, and his tea-making skills .
Speaking on Sky Arts 1's Jo Whiley Music Show last month Gallagher said: 'Weller watches it. He denies it but I know for a fact that he does because his daughter is one of my daughter's best friends. 'I'd go to her, "Did you watch The X Factor?", and she said, "Yeah, watched it with my dad". And I'd say, "Well that is interesting".'
The following is taken from the new Edition of Shortlist magazine, on sale now.
Shortlist: What about Modern pop - Noel Gallagher outed you as an X-Factor fan in Shortlist...
Paul Weller: He need's to be f*cking outed, mate. Yeah, I do watch it, but I also watch Peppa Pig with my six-year-old boy. And I'm more of a fan of Peppa Pig than I am of The X-Factor. If anything it makes more fucking sense. I watch EastEnders with my missus because she's mad for it, and Ben 10's my little boys favourite, but it doesn't mean I really love these programmes. it's just something you have to do.
Earlier this year Gallagher mocked Weller's tea-making skills saying "Paul Weller's tea-making leaves a lot to be desired. It's watery and the colour's not right."
Shortlist: Noel also had a few things to say about the quality of your tea-making...
Paul Weller: Listen Noel's got a lot of stories, but how many of them are true is another matter. He's from the Manchester school of Bullshit, Bless his heart. He's got lots of stories and theories but few of them are rooted in truth.
It's was reported in the October edition of Q Magazine that Paul Weller's new album, will feature Noel Gallagher playing guitar on two tracks.
One track is a psyche rocker "The Attic [which] hurtles through at a swift one minute 30 seconds".
