Noel Gallagher On Meeting George Harrison And More

Noel Gallagher has been speaking about the time he got to meet former Beatle George Harrison at a bonfire party.

Speaking to the Rolling Stone he said "I was invited to a bonfire party, and it happened to be on the property that backed up into George's house. So I'm sitting on a log and this guy with a beard and a denim jacket comes up to me and says, "Hey, you want a Heineken?” I was like, “F*cking hell!” We talked about Carl Perkins, and I told him he was my favorite guitar player".

During the same interview he was asked if he flattered when George Martin called him the finest songwriter of his generation.

He replied "I was fucking flattered - but you can’t take that too seriously, or what are you going to do next? I think he’s wrong, by the way".

Noel Gallagher Talks Guitars, Gear And High Flying Birds

His songs and performances are filled with grace and easy charm – a deceptively casual style that never calls attention to craft. Turns out, the Noel Gallagher one encounters during an interview is very much like the Noel Gallagher on record.

Never once during our conversation - taking place just two hours before he's to appear on stage in Philadelphia with his new band High Flying Birds - does it appear as though the singer-songwriter and guitarist is on auto-script, tossing out pre-planned, well-rehearsed answers. By turns direct, fresh, surprising (even to him, sometimes) and remarkably funny, Gallagher is, as ever, the real deal.

Clearly in a good mood, he admits that he's having a great time on this, his maiden tour as a solo artist. "I'm really enjoying it," he says. "I'm looking forward to every show. I thought that I would be lost in the middle of the stage, but I'm liking it. I can see a long open road in front of me. It turns out that I've grossly underestimated myself."

So far, his solo shows have met with the same glowing enthusiasm as his new album, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, and considering that the disc is one of 2011's best releases - a 10-song, first-listen winner that matches the highest highs of Oasis' Definitely Maybe and (What's The Story) Morning Glory? - that's saying something. Tracks like If I Had A Gun and (I Wanna Live In A Dream In My) Record Machine already play like classics, and the best kind of classics, too: alive, open-hearted, intelligent and endlessly transfixing.

Much has been made of Noel's split from Oasis and his fractured relationship with brother Liam (who now fronts the band Beady Eye) - too much, in fact - so in the following interview, MusicRadar decided to shift the focus to the things that matter most: musicianship, songwriting, production, guitars and gear.

There's something very distinctive about your guitar playing. All you have to do is strum the opening chords to If I Had A Gun or Wonderwall, and we know it's you.

"Really? Huh… Well, that's interesting! [laughs] To be honest, I don't consider myself a guitarist, so I don't sit around and think about the whole thing too much. I only try to think about the songs, you know? I've got my own style on the guitar, sure, and I play rhythm in a certain way, and I use certain inflections. People have said that to me, and I understand it. But I don't have any magic answers – I just do what I do.

"I tend not to play a lot of major chords. I think I drop the major notes and play fifths, you know what I mean? Again, it's nothing I spend a lot of time on. I try to play like myself, and I think I do. But I don't dwell on the whole aspect of guitar technique and stuff. I'm a songwriter."

You say you don't consider yourself a guitarist, but to many people you're more than that – you're a "guitar hero."

"Well, you know what? In Oasis, I was doing a completely different thing than what I'm doing now. I was playing lead guitar. And…I do miss that. I miss being at the end of the stage and just turning up my fucking amp as loud as possible and kissin' the sky. I do miss that, I have to say.

"What I'm doing now, yeah, it's different, so I have to rein in my natural urges to go for it. I'm part of the rhythm section now, so I've got to hold things down. I can't just go off on the guitar. But I'm enjoying that, really. I've got to say, I'm a much better rhythm guitarist than a lead guitarist."

Andy Bell: 'Song Dispute With Adam Ant Has Nothing To Do With Liam Gallagher'

Beady Eye's Andy Bell: 'Song dispute with Adam Ant has nothing to do with Liam Gallagher'

Guitarist says that ex-Oasis frontman has been 'dragged' into argument.

Beady Eye guitarist Andy Bell has said that Liam Gallagher had "nothing to do" with the dispute over a track he penned that was used by Adam Ant.

As was previously reported, Adam Ant pleaded with Gallagher to deal with him "man to man" to settle the dispute, which prompted the former Oasis frontman to describe him as "nutty" in the latest issue of NME.

However, in a statement released today, Bell said that it was his decision to not allow Ant to feature the song on his solo album and claimed it was unfair that Gallagher had been "dragged into" the argument.

Gallagher has since been blasted by mental health charity Mind for his comments, but Bell said: "I have never met or worked with Adam Ant. We have a mutual friend who I had played around on a track with who then passed the music over to Adam without my knowledge.

"I then explained the track couldn't be used for his album (this was just a rough demo) and thought the matter was closed. Adam then mentioned in the press he had recorded with one of Oasis, but Liam Gallagher had banned the track from being used.

"Liam had no idea about my vague connection until this happened. He has never met him either, or even heard the track."

Bell then went on to conclude:

It was totally my decision not to allow the track to be used, and I'm annoyed at Liam being dragged into this situation which has nothing at all to do with him.

Liam Gallagher Says His Mother Is A Big Fan Of Beady Eye

Liam Gallagher has been questioned by the NME on whose music gets played in his mother Peggy's house his or Noel's?

He said "Not sure, man. Dunno. Gotta be ours though, hasn't it. She's a big fan of the Eye. Although I'm sure she plays his a lot as well. Just before she goes to bed".

Below are a few videos from Beady Eye's gig at the O2 Academy Sheffield: who were asked 'What do you like about Beady Eye?'

Review: Beady Eye At Sheffield's 02 Academy

Beady Eye, including Liam Gallagher, Gem Archer, Andy Bell and Chris Sharrock took to the stage at the Sheffield O2 Academy venue on Saturday, for the second night of their UK tour.

Diehard fans weren't disappointed as they played nearly every song from their debut album 'Different Gear, Still Speeding' and a number of B-Sides.

The band took to the stage blasting straight into the scuzzy riffs of 'Four Letter Word', the first track of their debut album. Followed by fan favourite 'Beatles And Stones', Liam's voice sounds fantastic and the band are on great form the track is a massive crowd pleaser.

The crowd were then treated to 'Millionaire' followed by 'Two Of A Kind'. Liam seems in his element up on the stage, talking to the crowd and looking like he’s genuinely having a great time. Andy, Gem and Chris were on top form, reminding everyone of what a great back line Beady Eye have.

The crowd were then treated to 'Three Ring Circus' and 'The Roller', that got everyone up and singing.

The band then played 'In The Bubble With A Bullet' it was the first time I have heard it live and it sounded superb, Liam's vocal delivery was again spot on.

Then followed 'Bring The Light' and 'Standing On The Edge Of The Noise', the place is officially rocking, the band sounded fantastic and the crowd was going mental.

Liam had the crowd eating out of his hand without the need for any between-song banter.

'Kill for a Dream' is my favourite track from the album it did not disappoint.

Then came 'The Beat Goes On' and 'Man Of Misery', two tracks that really stood out for me as being something special live.

'The Morning Son' has always been a crowd favourite and then came a huge sing-along to 'Wigwam'.

Coming back onstage to frenzied chants of ‘Beady Eye! Beady Eye!’ the encore consisted of a superb 'World Outside My Room' followed a cover of ‘Sons Of The Stage’ by World Of Twist.

A limited number of tickets are available for a few dates on the UK tour, for details visit www.beadyeyemusic.com

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In Boston Review

Officially, Oasis mastermind Noel Gallagher named his current band after a Jefferson Airplane song. But it’s not hard to note the moniker contains echoes of Paul McCartney’s second band. And where Liam Gallagher’s Beady Eye has taken the John Lennon approach of wiping the past clean away (reportedly refusing to play Oasis material live), high-profile Beatles devotee Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds were more like Wings at the Wang, folding plenty of old songs in with the new on Saturday.

In fact, Gallagher hedged his bets, waiting until three songs in before diving into new material. But “(It’s Good) to Be Free’’ (with its soft acoustic strums eventually blossoming into something more muscular) and the steroidal-Velvet Underground downstrokes of “Mucky Fingers’’ were hardly obvious cheats to bank some early applause.

Not that he needed it; the crowd was vocal and enthusiastic whether Gallagher played a stripped-down (but still full-blooded) “Wonderwall’’ or the Moddish acid-pop of “(I Wanna Live in a Dream in My) Record Machine.’’ The vigorous cheers were well-earned by new songs such as “AKA . . . What a Life!’’ (whose disco-adjacent drums and piano rode an ominous throb akin to Fleetwood Mac’s “Big Love’’) and “(Stranded on) the Wrong Beach,’’ with its guitars rumbling just beneath a muted glam thump.

A mere 12 shows into being a frontman after more than a decade and a half off to the side, Gallagher was fine, if low key, to the point where his muttered dialogue with the audience was sometimes incomprehensible in a way that had nothing to do with his Mancunian accent. His singing occasionally followed suit, as less-successful songs such as “Soldier Boys and Jesus Freaks’’ and “AKA . . . Broken Arrow’’ were not sharply delivered.

But if Gallagher’s voice is not as distinct as his brother’s, it was perfectly solid so long as he harnessed it with oomph. The aggressive, slashing “The Importance of Being Idle’’ sat right in his sweet spot, and “The Good Rebel’’ - essentially an organ-fueled “Mr. Tambourine Man’’ played to the beat of “Ticket to Ride’’ - was robust on all fronts. Besides, as he closed with the lusty football chorus of “Don’t Look Back in Anger,’’ he had plenty of assistance.

The Hours opened with airy sensitivity anthems that nonetheless had no lift to them, like the Script minus the teen-appeal crispness.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In Philadelphia Review

Noel and Liam Gallagher always understood the importance of being obvious - fist-pumping guitar chords, bass lines that go bump-and-grind in the night, bobblehead drumbeats, "moon in June" rhymes bleated through the clenched teeth of Liam's gloriously Lennon-esque whine - which is why Oasis ruled Britannia in the '90s.

In 2009, Noel Gallagher finally quit the champagne supernova of post-fame Oasis when the sibling rivalry with Liam escalated to total warfare, and he has just embarked on a solo career marked by the release of Noel Gallagher's High Flyin' Birds and a world tour that on Friday night brought him to the Academy of Music.

Backed by a crisp, drama-free four-piece, Gallagher took the stage with his trademark modish haircut and untucked button-down shirt and launched into a pair of deep-cut Oasis tracks, "Mucky Fingers" and "(It's Good) to be Free" (its title no doubt a not-so-subtle shot across the bow of the Good Ship Liam).

From there he tucked into the new album, which, like everything Gallagher writes, is proudly beholden to his record collection: "Everybody's on the Run," with its canned backing choir reminiscent of "You Can't Always Get What You Want"; the Kinks-ian "Dream On"; and the Sgt. Pepper-esque "The Death of You and Me," with its lilting falsetto and swirly, kaleidoscopic keyboard flourishes evoking visions of village greens dotted with tangerine trees under marmalade skies.

But the new material was routinely outclassed by the A-list Oasis songs, which were reconfigured in arresting ways, most notably a hushed "Supersonic" accompanied only by acoustic guitar, tambourine, and Doors-y organ fills. On "Wonderwall," Gallagher's earnest vocal inflections telegraphed a tenderness and vulnerability absent in his brother's venomous sneer. And on the majestic "Don't Look Back in Anger," which closed out the night, Gallagher's foggy tenor was buttressed on every word by 2,900 backup singers stretching from the lip of the stage to the back row of the top balcony.

Gallagher seemed happy just to be here now, occasionally wringing self-effacing humor out of his trademark imperial hubris. When a woman in the front row informed him that she'd named her son after him, he asked her if "he was as handsome as me" before contemplating aloud the possibility that in 20 years, his namesake would take his place on the Academy of Music stage.

Noel Gallagher On Oasis, Russell Brand, Fatherhood And More

Details: Your first solo record, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, is about to be released. Are you nervous about going it alone?

Noel Gallagher: Yeah, it's weird. All the great bits about starting are gone, like the element of surprise. And all the shit bits are magnified. I have to be the fucking frontman now and charge people money to see it. I'm wary of what people expect. Put this in the interview: Don't come expecting to see anything, because there's nothing to see. It's the music, there ain't no fucking jokes, no moonwalking, no juggling, no circus tricks.

Details: You never struck me as someone who worried about expectations.

Noel Gallagher: Yeah, I haven't got anything to prove. People say I've got a lot to prove, and I'm like, "Fuck, really?" I pity the people at the first 12 gigs, though. But after that I plan to unlock my inner Elvis. Kung fu in a cape, with burgers.

Details: You've always maintained that you're comfortable with fame, a rarity among celebrities.

Noel Gallagher: I have to say I was absolutely crestfallen when the phone-hacking scandal broke here in England and my name wasn't mentioned once. I'm not even worthy to have my fucking phone hacked. And Steve Coogan is. It is fucking over. But I never understood people who bitched about fame. Even in the nineties, when it was mad and there were photographers all around the house, it never occurred to me to send someone else out to get cigarettes. It took me five minutes—went for a walk, gave a wave, went back inside.

Details: What about when you were assaulted by a fan on stage in Toronto in 2008?

Noel Gallagher: That had nothing to do with me. That guy was a fucking moron. Why would he attack me and not Liam? C'mon. Fuck me. That's all I wanted to say to him afterwards: "Leave me alone. I write the fucking songs. Fuck up the guy over there with the glasses."

Details: Speaking of Oasis, Be Here Now is often called "the coke album." Is that a fair label?

Noel Gallagher: We were taking all the cocaine we could possibly find. When you're on the old cocaine, you think everything you do is incredible. The album is one of my least favorites, but wrapped up in that are some seriously amazing times. We were the biggest band in the world. We brought two DJs on the road. Who even brings one?

Details: When did you kick the habit?

Noel Gallagher: I woke up one afternoon in 1998, and there were people partying in the house for a couple of days and I didn't know most of them. I got up and started doing drugs for breakfast. But finally I decided it was time for a change. I kicked it for a couple of weeks, then that turned into a couple of months, and after that it was, "Fuck this. Fuck these people. Who the fuck are these people? I don't like any of them anymore." But the party was still going on, and then I had to get rid of friends who I had known for years. It was tough at first, but do I want to get to 40 and still being doing this? The answer was no. And fatherhood changes every thing.

Details: You have three kids now?

Noel Gallagher: Yeah, and you should not being doing drugs when the kids are in bed. That's just fucking wrong. And they can't be getting it from me. They're going find out soon enough, anyway. But it's not like my 4-year-old son is going to come up to me and say, "Dad, I'm going out tonight, and I think I'm gonna try some of that heroin stuff, what ya reckon?" Please, kids don't ask about drugs, they just do it. You don't know how you'll react. It's not like my kids will come home and say, "Whoa, I'm stoned. Dark Side of the Moon and all that." You have to be a detective. Kids are fucking kids and they'll try it.

Details: How has fatherhood changed you?

Noel Gallagher: I started off as many fathers do. I enjoyed the good bits, but I was wary of the responsibility. But now I love being a dad. It's different with the boys. All they want to do is fight. And I can take on a 4-year-old any day of the week—I will fuck you up. Give me that blown-up baseball bat and I will smash your head in. My little lad, before he goes for the bath, he's stomping on my rib cage, giving it his all. He thinks he's beating the fucking living daylights out of me. You just have to pick him up with one hand and launch him into the bath. Their mother is a real mum, a real parent. I'm a doofus fucking dad. If it were up to me, it's chocolate for breakfast and fucking watching TV all day. Kids and family life are only as good as your wife, and she's amazing. It allows me to be a fucking waste of space, really.

Details: Russell Brand was the best man at your wedding this summer. What was his toast like?

Noel Gallagher: If you weren't me, it was fucking sidesplitting. He just listed all the ludicrous, daft shit I've said and done over the past years. He basically said, "How is this idiot ending up with that woman? If he wasn't a fucking rock star, she wouldn't have looked twice at him." My wife said, "Well, that makes me look shallow, doesn't it?" To which I said, "Well, it's fucking true. You know it and I know it." He was my best man—there's no better man than him. If you see my friends, no one's the best. They're all barely acceptable. I couldn't have them make the speech when I have the modern-day Shakespeare here, who can speak for nine hours on nothing. It was the first time I've ever seen him speak when he didn't talk about himself. It killed him to talk about me.

Noel Gallagher On Hearing Oasis' Supersonic On The Radio For The First Time

Noel Gallagher has been talking about the first time he heard Oasis' debut single Supersonic on the radio.

He told Rolling Stone (Canada) "We got a call that “Supersonic” was going to be played on [BBC] Radio 1 in 1994. It was the greatest thing that’s ever happened to me. They said our band's name, the band that we’d been in for three years that was going fucking nowhere. I sat there, like, “Wow. Well, this is it. Where the fuck is my private airplane? Someone go and get me a fucking pet chimp, now!”
