Astronomers Have Made Oasis' 'Champagne Supernova' An Actual Thing

When Oasis debuted "Champagne Supernova," there was much debate over the song's strange lyrical imagery—and specifically, over what the hell a "champagne supernova" is supposed to be. Noel Gallagher himself has often claimed that even he doesn't know, that it's more about emotion anyway. But now, thanks to University of Oklahoma astronomy and physics professor David Branch, the "Champagne Supernova" has some factual scientific grounding, so shut up: Branch took the name that once only applied to special Britpop feelings and elaborate drug cocktails and gave it to a recently discovered, mysterious type of star explosion.

If you're into meticulously detailed science stuff, you can read all about the researchers' findings here, but suffice it to say that Branch chose the name "'Champagne Supernova' since extreme explosions that offer new insight into the inner workings of supernovae are an obvious cause for celebration." (The article doesn't specifically mention that Branch was inspired by the Oasis song, but come on.) Branch will now begin determining the physics behind how someone can be walking slowly down a hall, yet simultaneously be moving faster than a cannonball. [via io9]

On This Day In Oasis History...

Definitely Maybe was released on DVD on the 6th of September 2004 to mark the tenth anniversary of its original release. It went triple platinum in the UK.

The DVD featured an hour-long documentary about the recording of the album featuring rare and contemporary interviews with the band and its associates.

Also included was the album in its entirety, which included "Sad Song", which was originally only released on the UK vinyl version of the album and also on the Japanese CD edition. Other content included live and TV performances of the albums twelve tracks, and the promo videos to "Supersonic" (UK & US versions), "Shakermaker", "Live Forever" (UK & US versions), "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and "Rock 'n' Roll Star".

A limited-edition release in the UK and Ireland included a bonus DVD containing more live footage and anecdotes.

There was also an accompanying made-for-TV documentary, entitled There We Were, Now Here We Are...: The Making Of Oasis. This was broadcast on Channel 4 in the UK at 11:30pm on Friday, 3 September , three days before the release of the Definitely Maybe DVD. The programme combined existing and unused interview footage from the DVD documentary and focused on the origins of the band, and the four singles from Definitely Maybe.

It also included a very rare clip of "All Around the World" performed live at a rehearsal session in the Boardwalk in 1992, five years before it was eventually recorded and released on Be Here Now. The DVD received the NME award for Best Music DVD.

Noel Gallagher Makes Surprise Appearance At Indian Restaurant In Bournemouth

Rock star Noel Gallagher made a surprise appearance at a Bournemouth restaurant ahead of his band’s appearance at the BIC.

The former Oasis guitarist and founder of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds found time for a quick Chicken Jalfrezi and Chicken Bahari at the Little India in Old Christchurch Road.

After washing down his meal with a Kingfisher beer, Noel found time to chat to eager fans who were amazed to find themselves dining alongside a legend.

Restaurant manager Aman Ullah said he urged customers to leave him alone until he had finished his meal.

He told the Daily Echo: “A group of six men turned up for a booking at 8pm on Monday and had drinks before ordering their food.

“When they ordered they asked for an extra couple of dishes and said someone else would be joining them. I recognised him straightaway when he walked in the door.

“I could see that other people had recognised him but I asked them to let him eat.”

It’s not the first time restaurant owner Abu Sorwar has served famous customers. In 2002 he transported a meal to the USA for rapper Ice-T and two years later served Jennifer Ellison at his Bournemouth restaurant.

It could have been the strangest reason for a cancelled gig ever not a rock star going off the rails or losing their voice but an eight-legged green-fanged spider!

The mystery creature jumped out of Noel Gallagher's guitar case before his Jersey Live performance at the weekend leading to the whole area being sealed off for everybody's safety.

The gig did eventually go ahead, but only once the creature had been captured and taken to Durrell for everybody's safety.

Today, the spider has finally been identified, click here to watch the video.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds UK Tour Starts Today

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds will play in Bournemouth today before stopping in Liverpool, Cardiff, Nottingham and London as part of the UK tour.

They will also be joined on stage on all dates listed below by a three-piece brass section and the Crouch End Festival Chorus and Hertfordshire Chorus.

Bournemouth, BIC (04th September 2012)
Liverpool, Echo Arena (6th September 2012)
London, Wembley Arena (7th September 2012)
Cardiff, Motorpoint Arena (9th September 2012)
Nottingham, Capital FM Arena (10th September 2012)

Blur guitarist Graham Coxon, who earlier this year released his eighth solo album A+E, will provide support on all dates.

Coxon confessed he wants them to 'jam' together onstage.

He told Uncut magazine earlier this year, "Yeah, it's weird I'm going out on tour with Noel. I've never talked to him about music, it's always been shuffly feeted (sic) small-talk. Whenever we've met we've got on just fine. He's a pretty solid bloke, Noel.

"I don't know what was going on with the whole Blur/Oasis thing. I tried to stay out of it, really. Will we be jamming together? I dunno, but I'm definitely open to suggestions!"

The Kooks have also been confirmed as opening act for the Wembley Arena show on September 7th 2012.

Tickets are still available for a number of dates, more details on availability can be found by clicking here.
