Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In Manchester

Many fans will no doubt single out Johnny Marr's appearance on stage alongside Noel Gallagher as the highlight of their night at Manchester arena.

But for anyone who has followed the careers of Oasis - and subsequently Noel - there can be few better live music spectacles than The Masterplan being performed to a hometown crowd.

The title track to an album of B sides good enough to rival anything Oasis or either of the Gallagher brothers have ever released was what the girl stood next to me in the beer queue was looking forward to most.

Privately, I was too. And it didn't disappoint.

I know it is terribly bad form to start a review with the last song of the encore but it was without doubt the highlight, particularly the electric guitar solo in the middle of it.

And therein lies part of the problem for Noel. He has created such a rod for his own back with his back catalogue, it is hard for anything to top it.

But he certainly gives it a good go and a packed Manchester Arena suggested his popularity is far from fading.

Much of the build up was dominated by rumours brother Liam was set to attend the gig and, judging by the amount of pretty green (Liam's fashion label) clobber on show, it seemed many fans had believed the hype. But it turned out to be just that.

When Noel and his High Flying Birds entered the stage, they kicked things off with (Stranded on) the Wrong Beach, from their self-named first album.

I have to begrudgingly admit, it was a little tame.

That was followed by everybody's on the run, a single from the same record.

It took the first Oasis song to really get us going and that was B-side Fade Away. In the background, slides of someone's childhood played as the lyrics 'while we're living, the dreams we had as children fade away' we're sung by Noel and the crowd.

It would be nice to believe they were his, but it didn't seem likely.

Our first taste of new album Chasing Yesterday came in the form of In The Heat of the Moment but it wasn't until songs later we heard the one I had been eagerly awaiting - Riverman.

If you'd closed your eyes during the intro, you'd have been forgiven for thinking Wonderwall was about to be unleashed.

But the true identity of the Weller-esque track was soon revealed and you got the feeling Noel knew it was his best work of late, with his face scrunching as he sang the words "find me the girl who electrifies the storm".

Along the way, we heard The Death of You and Me, from album one, and The Mexican, from NGHFB's latest offering.

The latter when performed live - as it does on the album itself - illustrated Noel's definite lurch away from Oasis towards his own, individual sound

And would we ever have seen Noel doing a 360 spin during a song without his brother looking on and taking the proverbial? Well, we did last night.

Johnny Marr Joins Noel Gallagher On Stage In Manchester

A Smiths legend formed an impromptu Mancunian supergroup as he joined Noel Gallagher on stage at his homecoming show.

Johnny Marr made a surprise appearance to perform alongside his pal at the gig at the arena tonight.

The 51-year-old guitarist, known for his killer riffs, was unveiled as the special guest to a rapturous reception at the end of a night which saw Noel mix songs from his new solo album with a raft of Oasis classics.

However, rumours of an appearance by his brother Liam proved unfounded.

The former frontman sparked a frenzy earlier by Tweeting: “Hometown gig Monday night, keeping it dangerous. LG x”.

However, there were no reported sightings of him at the show.

He did, however, again take to Twitter to express his pleasure at Man United’s FA Cup defeat to Arsenal across town at Old Trafford.

Noel Gallagher Calls Ed Sheeran "A F*cking Dude"

Noel Gallagher has said that Ed Sheeran is the only person to ever tell him they did not want to play a gig for Teenage Cancer Trust.

However, he added that most artists who did not want to take part in the charity event that he curated in 2013 initially said yes, but then got their agents to pull out of the gigs for them. Sheeran then agreed to take part the following year.

"You'll be there on the phone listening to someone blatantly lying to you. People say they can do it and then get their publicist to call up later and say, 'Oh we can't do it now, he thinks his cat's gonna have a stroke that particular afternoon'. You’re there, cajoling, with some cunt who plays a banjo about whether they're gonna turn up," said Gallagher in an interview which features in this week's issue of NME.

Discussing Sheeran, Gallagher commented: "The only one fucking person that has ever ever ever said 'I can't do it, I just got back from Australia I can’t be fucking arsed man, I'm fucked, but I will definitely do it next year' and I crossed his name off the list was Ed Sheeran! He actually called me back, you know what I mean, he said, 'Right I'm ready now, I wanna do it', and I thought, 'You know what, what a fucking dude'."

Noel Gallagher recently jumped to Ed Sheeran's defence after previously criticising the singer, stating "I won't hear a word said against him". Speaking to NME earlier this year, Gallagher remarked that he couldn't live in a world where Ed Sheeran headlines Wembley. But in an interview with Shortlist, the Oasis man revealed he'd had a change of heart about the pop star, mainly because Sheeran followed up on his word to appear at Gallagher's Teenage Cancer Trust concert at the Royal Albert Hall. "The only person that has ever said that and called me back the next year is Ed Sheeran. And I thought, 'You know what, you'll do for me man.'" He added: "He's a good lad and I won't have a word said against him."

Previously asked by NME if he'll be going to Sheeran's Wembley Stadium gigs, which Sheeran offered him tickets to, Gallagher said: "No no, they're for my daughter. She'll be going and drinking his champagne and possibly playing Top Trumps with James Blunt in the dressing room afterwards. I've given her a list of people to insult while she's there."

Noel Gallagher's new album 'Chasing Yesterday' is Number One in the Official Album Chart and has been confirmed as the fastest-selling album of 2015 so far. The album was released last week (March 2). Official Chart Company data reveals that the album had 89,000 combined sales, including 1,700 streams that now count toward the final chart position.

Gallagher is Number One ahead of Sam Smith's 'In The Lonely Hour' and Ed Sheeran's 'X' as well as the albums by George Ezra and Royal Blood.

Is Liam Gallagher Going To See Brother Noel Live In Manchester Tonight?

Oasis fans may want to keep a Beady Eye peeled for Liam Gallagher in the audience at his brother Noel Gallagher's gig at the Manchester Arena tonight.

For Liam has just posted a cryptic message on his Twitter account saying: “Hometown Gig Monday night, Keeping it Dangerous LG x”.

Fans soon began to speculate that the tweet means Liam is heading to watch his big brother when he plays with his new band, High Flying Birds, at the arena tonight.

Others thought it could mean Liam, whose latest band Beady Eye split last year, is planning a surprise secret gig at an intimate venue in Manchester at the same time his brother is playing to some 15,000 fans.

Or, of course, it could be Liam just teasing fans by talking in riddles - as he has been known to do in the past.

Most likely is it’s Liam’s response to Noel reportedly saying earlier this week that it could be dangerous for Liam to come to his gigs - as he’d in all likelihood get mobbed by fans.

Whatever the meaning, at least it appears that the Burnage brothers are finally mending the rift that saw the dramatic split of Oasis back in 2009.

The brothers are back on speaking terms, and Noel told the M.E.N. last week that he would consider an Oasis reunion - if the right offer were made.

He said: “I’d do it in the morning, if somebody puts half a billion pounds in my bank account. That’s not million; billion. Sterling. I’m there.”

But he also talked about enjoying going solo.

“When you’re writing lyrics for someone else to sing, it can be a bit tricky - particularly with Liam because you’d show him lyrics for a song and he’d go, ‘Is this about your ******* bird?’,” he says.

“I’d be like, ‘Let’s have a look ... erm, no. Just pretend it’s about your bird’. Now, with the songs I write, I’m free to get as personal or vague or existential as I like. I’m not a slave to anyone.

So where were we..?

Nottingham I believe. What a night that was. Even the soundcheck was great. Only our third gig and it was soaring...majestic...like an eagle or something!

The crowd were immense. Did I spy a leg bomber out there somewhere? I think I did! Always a welcome sight.

I'm STILL fannying around with the set. Almost there with it now. It's getting better...man!! (Ha-ha!)

Legged it straight off stage for a 4 hour drive up to Glasgow. Mind numbingly boring. It was made barely bearable by the Terry Tibbs Phone-in on Talk Sport. My god it was funny. Get on it if you can, it's fucking insane. Arrived into Glasgow at 3am...

Fuck me I need a haircut (another thing I forgot to do before I came away!). Problem is see, I have Irish hair and as any Irish man will tell you we have hair that doesn't grow in straight lines. Mine grows but doesn't get longer, it gets wider!!!

If I didn't rely on myself so much I'd have fired myself from this tour already... If I don't mention it anymore I might forget about it and let myself off, so let's move on.

The next day I'd agreed to do an in-store record signing thing at HMV in Glasgow...There were people there of all shapes and sizes and...even a few girls...real ones. I did feel a bit like Father Christmas at a grotto somewhere in the 70's.

There were some tears..not mine I might add...

Some guy had gifted me, as some kind of reward for his musical journey since '94, a betting slip in which he'd kindly placed a £3 bet for me on Man City to beat Burnley next Saturday! Let's hope the blues do the business and...well...The Milky Bars will be on me!!(that's a 70's joke there for you).

After signing all sorts of shit for about an hour it's fair to say R-KID has banged out a few cagoules in Glasgow... I might have been the only male in the shop not wearing one!! They do look good though, I must say.

The Hydro is, so my Scottish aftershave drinking pals tell me, a world class venue! I'll let you know in about 2 years, when this tour finishes, if that is indeed true. I'll tell you what is world class though...TRULY world class...is that fucking crowd.

Holy shit-balls... I've seen and done some shit in my time but I'm damned if I can remember anything to match that Saturday night!?! One of THE BEST nights I've ever done, ANYWHERE.

The kind of night you live for... A real privilege to have been there, nevermind actually being onstage. All downhill from that now surely? Saying that, they might have something to say about that in Manchester!

The toe-stub is...and there's no other way of saying this...a cunt. You know 'The Stub'? Of course you do! We've all done it, you know...stumbling round a bedroom minding your own business then all of a sudden...AAAARRRGH YOU FUCKING BASTARD!!!! You stub your toe on one of the bed legs...and whisper silently but very forcefully...'BASTARD!'. Middle toe...left foot...(my favourite actually)...STUBBED... STUBBED JERRY!!!!

It's fucking sore. I have a slight limp. Iree Nancy laughed her beautiful little arse off... it's all bruised and sad looking (my toe NOT her arse!). Good job I'm not known for blaming it on the boogie so to speak... I shan't let it affect my performance.

You currently find me with my foot up in Manchester, and you better be good tonight because the Glasgow massive booed when I suggested tonight might be the only place in Britain that could even compare with Saturday... Just saying.

I must go and literally hop in the shower, but before I do let me thank everyone who has bought my new record, pushing it up to where it belongs...on the topper most of the popper most! FANK YOU!!

Noel Gallagher On Playing Obscure Oasis B-Sides And T In The Park

Noel has told XFM that he's playing less Oasis songs in his live sets now, admitting that "there's no point trying to be clever about this".

Noel Gallagher has promised to play "the big tunes" at his live shows, in favour of "obscure Oasis b-sides" that his newer fans won't recognise. "I've done enough gigs to know. There's no point trying to be clever about this," Noel told XFM's Jim Gellatly.

"Playing obscure Oasis b-sides - although they're great and I love them - there's like 11 people dotted around the arena going berserk. And there's 8901 people kind of just thinking: what's this?"

"If I go see Neil Young...I want him to play the bangers, do you know what I mean?...I want him to play the big tunes."

Noel also praised the line-up for T In The Park, where he'll headline alongside Kasabian and The Libertines.

"I looked at the bill for T In The Park and I would probably say out of all the festival bills I've seen, they've smashed it this year. They've got the Libertines, Kasabian and The Prodigy and dare I say it, myself on the same weekend is no mean feat.

"It's always great to gig in Scotland, no matter where it is...I'll bring my wellies and my tartan umbrella."

And Noel thinks that closing out the festival will bring its own joys - like reducing grown men to tears.

"I'm closing it aren't I? Sunday night...there's going to be some casualties there during The Masterplan."

Everyone knows the story. As the creative force behind Oasis, Noel Gallagher changed the face of British music. Their sound and his songs swept the nation up in their wake and helped inspire a whole genre, but will far outlive the world of Britpop that they helped define.

Now, as he prepares to release his second solo album Chasing Yesterday, Noel sits down for a special interview with Matt Everitt to kick off the new season of The First Time. Here Noel talks about his very first exposure to music (Country and Irish bands like Dermot Hegarty and Big Tom and The Mainliners as it happens) and how the anthems of the football terraces inspired his childhood.

He also chats about the impact of The Sex Pistols, The Dammed, Leo Sayer (honestly) and his passion for the holy trinity of The Smiths, The Stone Roses and The Jam (and he may well mention The Beatles)

He also looks back on the very first Oasis rehearsal ("Mindblowing") and gig ("Great"), the difficult birth of their debut album Definitely Maybe and the all important issues of what length your guitar strap should be. There's also his memories of meeting Paul McCartney (they shared a meditation bubble), what it's like becoming so famous that when you get a haircut it ends up on the front pages of the tabloids ("the whole business is one huge joke") as well as his realization that Oasis had come to the end of the road and his feelings about stepping up to become a solo artist.

On This Day In Oasis History...

'Falling Down' was a single released on March 9th 2009 by English rock band Oasis, featured on their 2008 seventh studio album Dig Out Your Soul. Written and sung by lead guitarist Noel Gallagher, it was released as the third single from the album and is also the final single released by the band with the digital release occurring a day earlier.

The song debuted at 10 in the UK Singles Chart.

"Falling Down" is the fifth Oasis single to be sung by Noel rather than Liam (not including "Lord Don't Slow Me Down"). It is also the second Oasis song to be used in a TV series (the first being "Half the World Away").

"Falling Down" posted a subtle improvement from its predecessor, "I'm Outta Time" on the UK Singles Chart, reaching #10 in its chart entry week. This was something of a return to form for the band, after "I'm Outta Time" charting at #12 made it the first Oasis single released in the UK to fail to reach the top 10 since "Shakermaker" in 1994.

Between the two releases the band had put out 22 singles which made the top 10.




















However, it still showed a decline in the band's fortunes; from the release of "Whatever" at the end of 1994 until the release of "I'm Outta Time" the band had only had one single which failed to reach the top 4 in the charts, and that had been 2007's "Lord Don't Slow Me Down" which was only a minor promotional release and a non-album track and also download only.



The heavily compressed drum-rhythm and sense of disillusioned psychedelia bear a strong resemblance the Beatles song "Tomorrow Never Knows", being cited as Noel's finest effort so far to emulate the atmosphere of that song.

An excerpt of the B-side song "Those Swollen Hand Blues" appears at the end of "Mucky Fingers", second track of Oasis' 2005 album Don't Believe the Truth.

The lyric: "Catch the wheel that breaks the butterfly" references the quotation: "Who breaks a butterfly upon a wheel?" from Alexander Pope's "Epistle to Dr Arbuthnot".

The song was released as downloadable content for the video game Guitar Hero: World Tour on 29 January 2009.

The song was used in the opening sequence for the Production I.G anime Eden of the East, which first aired on Fuji TV's noitaminA timeslot on April 9, 2009.
