Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds - 'Who Built The Moon?'

Having played on Gallagher's 2015 single 'Ballad Of The Mighty I' (without hearing it first, impressively). Marr added guitar and harmonica to 'If love Is The Law' on his friends third album.

"I only do a few sessions now" Marr explains "Noel specifically got me in to play harmonica the way I play it. I've finally realised that people want me to do something that sounds like me".

You played on Noel Gallagher’s latest album. Did he return the favour?

“Not yet, because he’s always playing. He’s always on the road. That’s the second time I’ve played on one of his solo records now, so hopefully we’ll get around to working on my stuff. He’s always off in exotic places every time I hear from him – like some enormodome in South America.

“I liked his record. I played on a couple, but the song that ended up on the record is actually my favourite on the album. I was pleased about that, ‘Love Is The Law’. I’ve never heard a rock song like it. It hangs together like nothing else. It’s like a fucking movie.”

When you were in the studio, did you feel like he was pushing himself into a more adventurous place?

“Yeah, before we went into the studio I knew that anyway. We see each other on and off, and I know that he knew he was onto something. He and David [Holmes, producer] were working at every opportunity.

“I knew it was good because he told me it was good. Nothing with David is out of bounds, as long as it feels good and sounds good. They’re a good team because Noel can get a good melody over anything. What he’s proven with his solo stuff is that he’s still writing with the spirit that people love him for, but you can’t really imagine Oasis doing.”

He’s been very vocal about living outside of his legacy. You must understand that as well?

“Yeah. I’ve played a couple of shows with him now and the new stuff really stands up. The audience love it and it makes people feel really good. That’s something that he’s better at than anyone else.”

Noel Gallagher On Why He Thinks Vintage Guitars Have "Souls"

Noel Gallagher has told the Daily Star he thinks vintage guitars might have "souls".

He said "I think musical instruments particularly guitars might have souls, because if they are used and secondhand and from the '50s or something clearly they've got somebody else's soul in it."

He will never return the guitars he has of Johnny Marr's because he feels the musical instruments have the luck he needs to make more hits songs.

"On one of them he wrote Panic, and I wrote Slide Away on it – and for that reason alone he's never getting it back. And I've got his black Gibson Les Paul that he wrote The Queen Is Dead on and I wrote Little By Little or something on it."

Noel Gallagher On David Bowie

Please note that this interview was conducted in English first, then translated into Japanese for the December issue of 'Rockin' On' and has been translated back into English by mimmihopps.

The interview took place before Noel went on tour with U2 earlier this year.

From all the songs in the new album, 'It’s A Beautiful World' is the song with the most David Bowie influence.

Holy Mountain is also influenced by 'Aladdin Sane' era’s Bowie.

Top secret! 'I still don’t know what I was waiting for' from 'Waiting For The Rapture' was 'borrowed' from 'Changes'.

He’s always been listening to David  Bowie since his childhood. His cassette tape he always took with him on the road (his roadie years and Oasis years), was filled with Led Zeppelin, Bowie and Slade.

The reason why Noel got into Bowie's music was Mick Ronson. Mick is his guitar hero next to Johnny Marr

Noel’s favourite Bowie album is Hunky Dory. His favourite Bowie era is Space Oditty to Ashes to Ashes. He doesn’t like Bowie’s Berlin era.

Heathen and Next Day are great albums. To Noel, Let’s Dance is the best album of Bowie’s entire career

Noel met Bowie a couple of times (at Brit Awards etc) and exchanged emails with him 4 or 5 times.

The first email he received from Bowie was something like “Thank you for your kind words about me. Keep making great music. I’ll always support you”. Then a couple of months later he passed away.

Noel Gallagher On The Idea Of Writing His Autobiography

Noel Gallagher spoke to Frank Skinner on Absolute Radio about writing his autobiography.

He said “I've been offered. quite a bit of money.  But a few friends of mine have written books, for example, Johnny Marr, and it went on for years, I would say, "What are you up to?"  "Oh, still writing a book!"  And I was like, "I'm never gonna write a book, if it takes this long!"  And I was saying to him.  "How d'you go about it?"  And he was saying, "Well, you devote four or five hours a day to it."  I was like, "Four or five hours a day!"  It's like being back at school, I suppose you could take the Keith Richards approach where you get someone else to write it.”

“But then it's someone else's words - I don't know.  I did a tour blog once, which just freaked me out, it's like they'd call me and say, "Have you got your blog ready for today?"  I'm like, "I've gotta come up with another one of these things!  I have to make stories up now!"

“Maybe one day.  I'd have to sell the idea to myself really.”

Full interview to be played on Absolute Radio tomorrow – Sunday 26th November 8pm.

Noel Gallagher On 'If Love Is The Law'

Speaking to Radio X yesterday Noel Gallagher talked about 'If Love Is The Law' that appears on 'Who Built The Moon?'

He said “David was like, it needs a guitar thing and some lift towards the end. When someone says that to me, I call Johnny Marr! He’s one of my oldest friends, he’s very gracious with his time. Not a lot of people know that he’s got a guitar shaped phone in his house, that only I have the number for - when it rings, it glows red and white, he knows it’s me. He picks it up and says ‘The Boy Wonder. What can I do for you?’ I’m afraid, Batman, it’s that time again. It still blows my mind that he would even come and help us with a track.”

Uncut's Review Of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds 'Who Built The Moon?'

Not for the first time, Liam Gallagher recently stunned a fairly large number of people with something he said.

At a show in front of a record industry-crowd, he attempted to justify his new album being written with collaborators. "It ain't all about the music," he said in an audible intake of breath. "It's also about being a cool cunt like me"."

Oasis or no Oasis, if you needed a precise articulation of the difference between Liam and Noel Gallagher, that would probably do it. One is still justifying himself, while the other has comfortably made it. One knows there's more to the magic of rock 'n' roll than just the music; there's attitude and charisma. And, actually, the other knows that too, but prefers to push his own party line. Namely that its all about the songs.

Interestingly, for so irreconcilable a pair, right now, Liam and Noel actually have quite a lot in common. Not that for a second Big Brother would see it this way, but he - in his way - is also using guest writers, looking for a way forward. Rather than present another album of great rockers and midtempo ballads, here he has enlisted the help of producer/remixer/movie soundtracker David Holmes to reimagine his meat and potatoes as a rather more exciting plate of food.

Early remarks about the record were of it's purported "psychedelic" sound. This might perhaps make long long-service Noelers cast their minds back to the tracks he cut about three years ago with the psychotropic Amorphous Androgynous crew, or further, to 1996's "Setting Sun", which cast him as the monk on the mountain top in the Chemical Brothers' own "Tomorrow Never Knows".

The Amorphous collaboration ended badly, with Noel apparently junking their proposed LP and Garry Cobain from AA describing Noel as "too afraid to be weird".

Nonetheless, two tracks "The Mexican" and "The Right Stuff", offered a pleasant space/time slippage and made it onto the last Noel album 2015's "Chasing Yesterday".

Apart from the possibly "It's A Beautiful World", which has an agreeably droney vibe before mutating into a Coldplay-style anthem, this album will not fry your brain, though that's not to say that a substantial change has not been attempted.

Encouraged by Holmes to collaborate, Noel has pushed as far out of his comfort zone as a person can while still having Paul Weller and Johnny Marr guest. Rather than presenting completed songs to his producer, the pair -working together on and off since 2013, apparently - have jammed, and listened, then revisited the material to turn into something more like a song.

It has yielded some interesting moments. Lead-off single "Holy Mountain" imagines 'The Sweet' covering "Diamond Dogs", or a Phil Spector production of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs". It is, as Noel has said, a lot of fun. "If Love Is The Law" continues the mood, this time channelling the spirit of A Christmas Gift To You From Philles Records, with some appealing sleigh bells and a flavour of "That's Entertainment" by The Jam.

"The Man Who Built The Moon?" near the end of the album, takes the tune and and rhythm of "Wonderwall", and puts it in the epic setting of a Bond Theme. Additional nods to a more widescreen production come with "interlude: Wednesday PT1" and the closing "End Credits".

Best by some distance though is "Black And White Sunshine". It's not unfamiliar territory by any means (Except for mention of "thanks and praise", which gives it a flavour of Sunday School we probably never expected from him), and it is very good indeed. And entirely unfamiliar guitar rift opens proceedings with a Johnny Marr level of freshness and virtuosity. the chorus, with reference to ships coming in, is jubilant in the pure Knebworth fashion. The descent back to the verse is done with some tastefully basic guitar playing.

If this excellent rocker were surrounded by a family bearing some strong genetic resemblances to it, "Who Built The Moon?" would be a superior album. That's not quite the case, sadly. "Keep On Reaching" find Holmes pushing some Curtis Mayfield presets. "She Taught Me How To Fly" is a fusion of Pulp's "Common People" with Blondie's "Heart Of Glass". And even if Noel doesn't like to talk about The Beatles any more, there's no hiding that "Be Careful What You Wish For" sounds rather like the riff from "Come Together".

Which is a strange thing about the album. As the album's bonus track (a live-in-the-studio version of "Dead In The Water") makes plain, Noel has broadened his horizons beyond the plaintive acoustic ballad. But to still be making records that sound a bit like other records after all this experimentation suggests he's gone an awfully long way round the houses simply to end up exactly where he started.

Noel Gallagher On Album Track 'If Love Is The Law'

Noel Gallagher was speaking to Chris Moyles on Radio X in an interview that was broadcast this morning, this is what he had to say about 'If Love Is The Law'.

He said “If Love is the Law started out of a conversation about Genesis, and ended up becoming like Phil Spector, and Johnny Marr plays harmonica on it and electric guitar. We spent another incredible day in the studio with Johnny - it's massive that song, massive.”

Paul Weller And Johnny Marr Appear On Noel Gallagher's New Album 'Who Built The Moon?'

Who Built The Moon? has vocalists and guest musicians from around the world appearing across the 11 tracks, which were recorded in Belfast and London. Influences include French psychedelic pop, classic electro, soul, rock, disco and dance.

Gallagher has written the album entirely in the studio for the first time, and there are contributions from Paul Weller (who plays organ on Holy Mountain) and Johnny Marr (taking guitar and harmonica on If Love Is The Law).

The track The Man Who Built The Moon demonstrates some of the working methods, Gallagher and Holmes employed, as Noel reveals: “We took a keyboard riff we liked from an unused track and added chords. A year later we came to deal with it as a song and when we got to the chorus, David kept asking me to write a new one…. again and again and again.

“I was ready to strangle him. The one that you hear is the eighth attempt and, you know what? The annoying thing is he was right.”

Holy Mountain was kick-started by an obscure sample as Noel explains: “David played me the sample, so I worked out the chords and we demoed just a few, short minutes of it, taking it away on tour and playing with it.

“When it became a song back in Belfast it was so joyous, I just had to do it justice. What’s more joyous than being in love, baby? So, I wrote a song about love and it’s one of the best things that I’ve ever done.”

Noel Gallagher 'Was Never Asked To Play One Love Gig By Organisers'

Noel Gallagher was reportedly never asked to perform at the One Love Manchester gig by organisers.

Following Noel's 'no show' at Sunday's concert, his younger brother Liam took a very public dig at the High Flying Birds frontman on Twitter.

However, reports suggest Noel had never been invited to play by organisers or Ariana Grande's manager Scooter Braun in the first place.

“Noel has been getting a real bashing for not being at the gig, which is totally out of order," a source said.

“The fact he wasn’t asked to even perform at any point by any of the organisers makes a mockery of Liam’s claims.”

They added to The Sun: “Noel also felt the concert was aimed at fans of pop, not rock, a belief shared by Manchester icons Johnny Marr, The Stone Roses, Happy Mondays and Morrissey."

It comes as it was revealed the 50-year-old rocker had quietly made an incredible gesture by donating all the proceeds from Oasis’ 1995 hit Don't Look Back In Anger to the We Love Manchester fund.

The song, written by Noel, became an unofficial anthem for the victims of last month’s Manchester bombing after grieving people attending a memorial broke into a spontaneous rendition following a minute’s silence.

A source told the Mirror: “Very soon after the attack, Noel contacted the charity and offered to donate subsequent royalties from the track to the victims’ families.

“But he insisted it was done on the proviso that it was not publicised.”

Earlier Simon Kelner wrote in the i newspaper: "I happen to know that Noel has been donating all profits from sales of ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ since the bombing to the We Love Manchester campaign.’

Noel acknowledged those claims as true, as he retweeted a link to the article on his official Twitter account.
Since the gig, Don’t Look Back In Anger leapt to No. 27 in the Official Charts midweeks on Monday, after re-entering at No. 66 in the wake of the attacks last Friday.

A spokesman for Noel said last week: “Sadly, Noel will not be at the concert this weekend. "He’s been out of the country on a long-standing family trip since before the concert was announced and is unable to attend.

“Needless to say he is very supportive of the event and wishes everyone huge success on the day.”

Video: Noel Gallagher On The Manchester Terrorist Attack

Noel Gallagher has spoken to Radio X about his thoughts on the Manchester terrorist attack.

Speaking to John Kennedy as part of an interview about his career to be aired in full this Sunday at 8pm, Gallagher claimed the news had rendered him “speechless”.

22 people - many of them children - had been killed following a concert by US singer Ariana Grande at Manchester Arena on Monday night (22 May).

Noel explained: “I put on the radio [that morning] and of course you hear what’s happened and you know… it takes a while.

“Having played that arena and all that and stood in that foyer, and being from Manchester… It dawns on you that it’s aimed at young music fans.

“I’m saying that there are no words but there ARE words. But unfortunately, you can’t broadcast those words.

Noel, who hails from the Burnage area of Greater Manchester, went on: “But I suppose Manchester Arena will open again and, yeah, you have to keep going. I mean I don’t know what Ariana Grande is gonna do. I couldn’t imagine that…

Kennedy then asked if Noel felt sympathy for Ariana Grande, the 23-year-old musician who attracts a great many children and teenage fans.

Noel replied: “I don’t know what I would feel or how I would react. You just don’t know.

“I’ve got a teenage daughter, and you know, she may well have been there. But bar a couple of friends of friends who were in hospital and two very close shaves, all the people that I know didn’t get involved in it or weren’t caught up in it.

“But you know, I think this particular atrocity will take quite a while to heal.”

Noel joins a long list of Manchester artists to pay tribute to the city, with his brother Liam Gallagher, The Smiths' Johnny Marr and Courteeners' Liam Fray all sharing their heartfelt condolences.

Noel was talking to Radio X as part of an interview celebrating his 50th Birthday, which will feature a special show broadcast on the Bank Holiday weekend.

What A Life! Noel At 50, which will take a look back at the life and career of Gallagher, with reminiscences about his work with Oasis and his solo albums with the High Flying Birds, will air on Sunday at 8pm on Radio X.
