Noel Gallagher On Liam, Beady Eye And More

Taken from an interview with Noel Gallagher from the new issue of MOJO that is out now.

MOJO: When Who Built The Moon? was released a year ago, you only did two big print interviews then disappeared. Liam has been everywhere. Was that you letting him have his moment in the Sun?

I'm genuinely not competitive. Really! OK, I was in the '90s. Then we won - we won the '90s! Then it was, "I'm not arsed any more". (Sighs) Liam's record comes out, and if the journalist isn't asking a question about me, he's inventing one for them to ask about me. He's setting the agenda. When I do interviews it's always, "I was on your brothers Twitter account this morning; he doesn't like your wife much". "I'm like, I haven't come all the way to Peru to talk about that penis." That would be a daily occurrence.

Then when my album came out and I'd gone on the road, I said to my office, "Look, I can't be arsed." If I don't take a back seat here, this will go on forever, and it's belittling. It's beneath me. All that fucking squabbling brothers, you read about, and it's fucking juvenile. I'll let my music do the talking and whatever will be, will be,"

MOJO: So there wasn't a pang of envy when Liam did Finsbury Park? Or was it "good luck to him"?

Good luck to him definitely. (Pause) Listen I know the true story of Beady Eye and how it fell apart. He left the band by text! The Prince of Darkness, The Man, he didn't even have the balls to phone his bandmates. Because he got a solo deal, it was, See you later, lads. Then when he got his deal with Live Nation, no one was telling him, "Don't do any Oasis songs, do your new stuff, that's what your good at." He got his thing now - which is effectively my thing - and when he's headlining Finsbury Park I'm sat there watching Match Of The Day getting a PRS cheque for him playing my songs. But instead of making him happy, it's made him worse. It's made him even angrier (laughs).

Noel Gallagher On Oasis' 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' Album

In the new issue of MOJO magazine that is out now, Noel Gallagher spoke about Oasis' album 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' that was released in 2000.

Below is a snippet from the interview.

MOJO: In retrospect, was Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants an early indication of an impulse to do something radical with Oasis - which failed.

NOEL GALLAGHER "My mistake was... the first thing we did was Go Let It Out, which had a drum loop on it. Because I was writing all the material, and making all the decisions, I could never carry that idea through to the end. I'd get three songs in and go, "OK, I've got another seven songs that are stadium rock," and everyone would go, "Great! Stadium rock with guitars!" When you're starting with a blank canvas, like I am now, things are finished. With Oasis there was a timescale, because you had to get out on the road. And when no one else was contributing, everyone would be sitting there going, "have you finished writing it yet?" Particularly Liam. he'd be like, "Have you written it?" I'd be like, "Fucking hell, it is quite difficult y'know? I know I make it look easy, but it's actually not easy".

MOJO is available in stores now and available to buy digitally from various outlets.

Noel Gallagher On Having Gem Archer And Chris Sharrock In The High Flying Birds

Noel Gallagher has spoken to the new issue of Mojo about having Gem Archer and Chris Sharrock in his live band.

When asked was it a comfort thing he said "When I first started [as a solo artist], I had Tim [Smith, guitar] and Jeremy [Stacey, drums], and the great thing about session musicians is that when you're not sure what you're doing, they're bang on it, they make it sound like the record. That's what I needed at the beginning. But it's not the same as having a band. Chris and Gem are much looser, it's not the same every night. Tim and Jeremy left at exactly the same time Beady Eye broke up, so I took that as a sign.

Noel Gallagher On 'Who Built The Moon?', Working With Brian Eno and More

Taken from an interview with Noel Gallagher that is inside the new issue of MOJO.

On the High Flying Birds album 'Who Built The Moon?' taking four years to complete

"We did two different sessions in Belfast, I went on tour, and after a while snippets of music started appearing. [The 80's dream-pop single] Beautiful World took ages to come along. But I couldn't write anything around them for 18 months. I didn't know were it was going. then all of a sudden, I wrote a lyric and they all started falling like dominoes. I was really blown away by it. David saw something in me that I couldn't be bothered to look for myself. it was a liberation.

How far are you willing to push the experimental side of your music? Even if it ends up alienating your Oasis -minded fans?

"My more artistic notions are about pleasing myself, rather then wanting to work with those guys or this producer. I'll do whatever I want to now. Would I work with Brian Eno? I'd love to.

Is there a point where you emerge as Noel Gallagher, artiste?

"(Laughs) I did six months promo before (Who Built The Moon?) came out and I had to say to myself one night in a hotel room, "you've become an artist!" I had to say it to myself "you're not the kid from the council estate with a guitar over your shoulder anymore. (Manc cabbie voice) He did well for himself that lad with the guitar, fucking great one, mate!" (Laughs) So yes, I'm an artist now. I need to buy a scarf and hat.

The new issue of MOJO is out now and available in store or digitally.

Quotes And Notes From Noel Gallagher's Interview With MOJO

A few notes and quotes from Noel Gallagher's interview with Q that goes on sale tomorrow.

The recent recording in Abbey Road was with the High Flying Birds he will be working on a separate LP with David Holmes in January.

He went into a studio to record an acoustic LP after Chasing Rainbows but gave up on the second day after he realised he was only doing it for other people rather than himself. He realised he wanted to finish the David Holmes stuff instead.

"The album (Who Built The Moon) was finished, it was coming out, but it was an interesting position to be in (the mixed reaction to Holy Mountain). There was the acoustic track, Dead In The Water, and after [Chasing Yesterday] came out someone said, "You've got to do an acoustic record." I've never done an acoustic record, so I booked a studio for two weeks, and I'm sitting there with an acoustic, the one I wrote Wonderwall on, with fans all over the world saying, "This is what you should be doing." The management are saying, "That's a great song, it makes me cry." Then I thought, I'm not doing this for me, I'm doing it for other people. I want to get back to the [David Holmes] record, I want a drum machine from the '70s to put through an amplifier; I want to play bass".

"So I scrapped that acoustic session on the second day. The engineer said, "Is that it?" "Yeah." "We haven't done anything." "I know"... The only reason Dead In The Water was captured was because I didn't know it was being recorded. I won't ever re-record it, because I don't believe in it any more. David said, "You're the best f**king person in the world at doing that stuff, but you've already done it." He was right".

With our interview time nearing its end, and his point hammered home, Gallagher switches the subject to what comes next. He is, he says, starting work on a new record with David Holmes in January, while also demoing material at Abbey Road for a High Flying Birds touring-band album, on which he hopes to push its female members - Charlotte Marionneau, backing singer YSEE, [AKA Audrey Gbaguidi] and keyboardist Jessica Greenfield - to the fore. He predicts the latter LP will be finished first.

Liam Gallagher Calls On The UK Government To Outlaw Hunting Trophies

Liam Gallagher and others have signed an open letter calling for an urgent import ban on the UK Government to outlaw hunting trophies.

The Campaign To Ban Trophy Hunting says that over the last decade 2,500 trophies with many of those animals on the endangered species list have ended up in the UK.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs says trophies can only be brought into the country under strict rules, explaining:  “The Government will not issue an import permit for a trophy unless the importer can show there has been no detrimental impact on endangered species and the trophy has been obtained from a sustainable hunting operation.”

Campaign to Ban Trophy Hunting founder Eduardo Gonçalves says Britain’s reputation as a world leader in animal welfare and conservation is threatened by the way hunters are allowed to bring home trophies from some of the most endangered species. He said: “If it wants to rebuild its reputation, it should act now to help bring about a global ban on trophy hunting.

“Scientists are saying that trophy hunting is directly contributing to endangered wildlife being pushed to the brink of extinction. Lions, elephants and leopards are among those species particularly affected. We may have very little time left to save them.”
