Uncut's Review Of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds 'Who Built The Moon?'

Not for the first time, Liam Gallagher recently stunned a fairly large number of people with something he said.

At a show in front of a record industry-crowd, he attempted to justify his new album being written with collaborators. "It ain't all about the music," he said in an audible intake of breath. "It's also about being a cool cunt like me"."

Oasis or no Oasis, if you needed a precise articulation of the difference between Liam and Noel Gallagher, that would probably do it. One is still justifying himself, while the other has comfortably made it. One knows there's more to the magic of rock 'n' roll than just the music; there's attitude and charisma. And, actually, the other knows that too, but prefers to push his own party line. Namely that its all about the songs.

Interestingly, for so irreconcilable a pair, right now, Liam and Noel actually have quite a lot in common. Not that for a second Big Brother would see it this way, but he - in his way - is also using guest writers, looking for a way forward. Rather than present another album of great rockers and midtempo ballads, here he has enlisted the help of producer/remixer/movie soundtracker David Holmes to reimagine his meat and potatoes as a rather more exciting plate of food.

Early remarks about the record were of it's purported "psychedelic" sound. This might perhaps make long long-service Noelers cast their minds back to the tracks he cut about three years ago with the psychotropic Amorphous Androgynous crew, or further, to 1996's "Setting Sun", which cast him as the monk on the mountain top in the Chemical Brothers' own "Tomorrow Never Knows".

The Amorphous collaboration ended badly, with Noel apparently junking their proposed LP and Garry Cobain from AA describing Noel as "too afraid to be weird".

Nonetheless, two tracks "The Mexican" and "The Right Stuff", offered a pleasant space/time slippage and made it onto the last Noel album 2015's "Chasing Yesterday".

Apart from the possibly "It's A Beautiful World", which has an agreeably droney vibe before mutating into a Coldplay-style anthem, this album will not fry your brain, though that's not to say that a substantial change has not been attempted.

Encouraged by Holmes to collaborate, Noel has pushed as far out of his comfort zone as a person can while still having Paul Weller and Johnny Marr guest. Rather than presenting completed songs to his producer, the pair -working together on and off since 2013, apparently - have jammed, and listened, then revisited the material to turn into something more like a song.

It has yielded some interesting moments. Lead-off single "Holy Mountain" imagines 'The Sweet' covering "Diamond Dogs", or a Phil Spector production of Ricky Martin's "She Bangs". It is, as Noel has said, a lot of fun. "If Love Is The Law" continues the mood, this time channelling the spirit of A Christmas Gift To You From Philles Records, with some appealing sleigh bells and a flavour of "That's Entertainment" by The Jam.

"The Man Who Built The Moon?" near the end of the album, takes the tune and and rhythm of "Wonderwall", and puts it in the epic setting of a Bond Theme. Additional nods to a more widescreen production come with "interlude: Wednesday PT1" and the closing "End Credits".

Best by some distance though is "Black And White Sunshine". It's not unfamiliar territory by any means (Except for mention of "thanks and praise", which gives it a flavour of Sunday School we probably never expected from him), and it is very good indeed. And entirely unfamiliar guitar rift opens proceedings with a Johnny Marr level of freshness and virtuosity. the chorus, with reference to ships coming in, is jubilant in the pure Knebworth fashion. The descent back to the verse is done with some tastefully basic guitar playing.

If this excellent rocker were surrounded by a family bearing some strong genetic resemblances to it, "Who Built The Moon?" would be a superior album. That's not quite the case, sadly. "Keep On Reaching" find Holmes pushing some Curtis Mayfield presets. "She Taught Me How To Fly" is a fusion of Pulp's "Common People" with Blondie's "Heart Of Glass". And even if Noel doesn't like to talk about The Beatles any more, there's no hiding that "Be Careful What You Wish For" sounds rather like the riff from "Come Together".

Which is a strange thing about the album. As the album's bonus track (a live-in-the-studio version of "Dead In The Water") makes plain, Noel has broadened his horizons beyond the plaintive acoustic ballad. But to still be making records that sound a bit like other records after all this experimentation suggests he's gone an awfully long way round the houses simply to end up exactly where he started.

Liam Gallagher On Playing Live With Coldplay's Chris Martin

Liam Gallagher has spoken about when he joined members of Coldplay to perform Oasis' ‘Live Forever’ at the One Love Manchester charity concert earlier this year.

Liam said that he was “fucking glad he did it”, and that he and Martin were “cool” now.

He told the NME “That was all right, man,” said Gallagher. “We were booked to do a gig in Germany. We were supposed to be on about seven. [Partner and manager] Debbie was going ‘you’ll never guess who keeps fucking emailing me’. I’m like, ‘who? It’s not fucking Noel is it? Tell him to fuck off’. ‘No, fucking Chris Martin’. I’m like ‘what the fuck does he want?’ ‘I dunno what he wants, he just wants to have a word with you’. I’m like ‘does he want a fucking scrap? I’m not in the fucking mood right now, man’.”

Gallagher continued: “Anyway, so then we get on Skype, and he says ‘the Manchester thing, are you up for doing it?’ I think he wanted to do like, ‘Imagine’, and I’m like ‘look, I’m not doing ‘Imagine’, it ain’t happening’. He went ‘oh go on, it’ll be great’. I was like ‘I’m sure it fucking will be great. I’m fucking great and you’re fucking great, but it ain’t happening’. So he goes, ‘oh, would you do an Oasis tune?’ and I said ‘yeah, of course, man’. So then it was ‘Live Forever’.”

Noel Gallagher On "Transatlantic Pseudo-American Bullshit" That Dominates The Charts

Noel Gallagher has spoken about the current state of pop music and how the charts are dominated by "transatlantic pseudo-American bullshit".

He told the Sunday Times “The charts are still dominated by transatlantic pseudo-American bullshit, put a rap in and pop chorus on it. Email it to someone in Mogadishu to put some maracas over it. Make loads of money.”

He added “I grew up in the golden age of pop, late 1970s, early 1980s. Nobody talked about lyrics. You listened. You danced. It affected your life. Who cares what it’s about?”

When asked "when did that change?" he replied “Around Britpop, when everybody wanted to be considered ‘an artist’. When Travis and Coldplay came and it was all introverted, why-does-it- always-rain-on-me? It’s not just raining on you. It’s raining on everyone. I’d rather write a song about the umbrella, not the f****** rain. Look at everybody’s first Britpop album, Oasis’s. Blur’s. Pulp’s. Raging joy.”

When asked "but wasn’t the angst that came after that a reaction to the excesses?" he replied “I suppose it did get darker when drugs took over, yeah. And then you end up with the Libertines — lads with no teeth and their grandads’ hats.”

Pharrell Williams Wants To Work With Noel Gallagher

The Happy hit-maker is a massive Oasis fan and approached Noel for a collab.

Their unlikely link-up would be a world away from the “no-nonsense rock ’n roll” his estranged sibling bangs on about.

Noel explained: “Pharrell Williams is a dude, he’s a big fan of mine.

“He asked me to work with him recently. He told me that N*E*R*D were massive fans of Oasis.

“He was No1 in 105 countries when he asked so does he really need to work with the guy from Oasis?”

However, it wasn’t the Oasis songs that really excited fashionista Pharrell.

Noel went on: “He goes: ‘You know what was as important as the songs?’

“And I’m thinking: ‘Nothing was as important as the songs.’ And he goes: ‘The f***ing sweaters man. Your sweaters were cool. Where did you buy the sweaters?’ And I’m thinking: ‘The sweaters?! Better than Live Forever?’ Maybe that’s where I’m going wrong.”

Noel is close mates with Chris Martin these days but he reckons he nearly wrote Coldplay’s big hit before them.

He explained: “I believe that songs are out there and you’ve got to catch them and if Chris Martin hadn’t written it I believe I would have wrote Yellow six months later.”

Liam Gallagher has said he apologised to Coldplay‘s Chris Martin when they performed together at One Love Manchester for insulting them over the years.

The singer teamed up with the band’s frontman to perform ‘Live Forever’ at the event, which was organised by Ariana Grande after the terrorist attack at her concert at Manchester Arena in May.

Speaking to Beats 1’s Zane Lowe, Gallagher revealed that he apologised for those remarks and more backstage at the charity gig. “I got in the dressing room and said ‘I apologise for everything I said before, I was being a dickhead.’

“[Martin] went: ‘Nah, nah, nah, we fucking love it. So I’ve got a pass.”

Liam Gallagher has told The Times his brother Noel’s ego is “out of control” and he is preventing an Oasis comeback.

He said: “Mate, it’s not up to me, is it? It’s in the hands of Noel. He’s got the biggest power and that’s what p****s me off. It will depend on how his solo records go because his ego is out of control and he won’t be able to handle it if it dwindles, but he’s obviously got a massive problem with me. “As far as I’m concerned, it was a minor argument that broke up Oasis. We’ve had worse. I heard talk about him doing a solo career five years before, so he used it to jump ship. Right now I can’t give a s**t about Oasis, Noel or his s**t fans.”

Liam, had a go at Noel again for not playing at Ariana Grande’s One Love Manchester benefit concert earlier this month, even though Noel, 50, donated the royalties from Oasis’ ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ to victims of the terrorist attack.

He said: “He’s made it clear that a reunion is not at the top of his priorities and right now it’s not the top of mine. I would prefer it if I was in Oasis, but that’s not what the Manchester concert was about. He could have got up and done Don’t Look Back in Anger and never even had to see me. Are you telling me that if Noel Gallagher rocked up with his guitar and knocked on the door they would say, ‘You’re not invited, mate’? So he can f**k off on that one. I don’t care if he was in the Amalfi Coast or wherever, it lacked sympathy on his behalf. We have family and friends in Manchester and me mam’s still there, and it would have been nice to do it for his people. End of.”

Liam performed ‘Live Forever’ with members of Coldplay at the gig and in the past has called Chris Martin a vicar, a geography teacher and a plant pot over the years, he said the pair got on well.

Liam explained: “I did say, after we rehearsed ‘Live Forever’ in the toilets, sorry to him for that. But [Martin] said, ‘No, no, carry on, we love it!’ So I was like, ‘OK, what’s that you’re wearing?’ They know it’s in jest. We’re all different. Not everyone can be as cool as me.”

Noel Gallagher On The People Of Manchester Singing Oasis' 'Don't Look Back In Anger'

Noel Gallagher has said that the way the city of Manchester co-opted the Oasis song Don't Look Back in Anger as a rallying cry in the wake of last month's terrorist attack left him lost for words.

Gallagher was speaking before a screening of the Oasis documentary Supersonic in Glastonbury's William's Green tent at Glastonbury Festival on Friday.

The former Oasis singer, who recently turned 50, said that when a minute's silence in Manchester following the attack was interrupted by a spontaneous rendition of the song, "for the first time in my life I was f------ speechless".

The song was used as a defiant hymn following the bomb at a concert by Ariana Grande which killed 22 people, including children and young music fans.

"The fact that people spontaneously rallied round that song is an incredible thing," Gallagher said.

He added that he has no idea who the song's central character Sally is. "Who the f------ hell is Sally? I don't know anyone called Sally," he said.

Gallagher's brother Liam, with whom he has long been feuding, is playing at Glastonbury on Saturday, but Gallagher refused to comment on whether the pair might reunite at the event.

Previously, many fans expected the warring brothers to  appear together at the Manchester One Love benefit concert, organised by Grande to raise funds for the victims and held earlier this month.

Afterwards Liam, who performed at the event and sung with Coldplay's Chris Martin, criticised his brother for not attending.

One Love Manchester Organisers Release Statement Defending Noel Gallagher

The team behind One Love Manchester have issued a statement on the "negativity" surrounding Noel Gallagher's absence at the event last weekend.

The benefit concert - which included appearances from Coldplay, Take That and his brother Liam Gallagher - helped raise funds for the victims of the Manchester terror attack, which saw 22 killed and many more injured at an Ariana Grande concert.

Following rumours that Oasis were set to reform at the event, organisers have spoken out to defend the Ballad Of The Mighty I rocker and confirm that royalties from Don't Look Back In Anger were being donated to the fund.

A spokesperson for SB Projects, Live Nation, Festival Republic and SJM Concerts said: “Sunday's concert was a huge success and we are all dismayed that there is negativity aimed towards Noel Gallagher. Neither Noel nor Oasis were ever going to perform. We were extremely pleased when, last week, Noel not only gave his blessing for us to use his songs, but also told us that he was donating his royalties from Don't Look Back In Anger to the fund. Let's keep the positivity please. One Love Manchester.”

Liam Gallagher: I Take Back Everything I've Said About Coldplay

After making a surprise appearance at Ariana Grande’s One Love Manchester concert, Liam Gallagher has maintained his place among the headlines by attacking brother Noel.

Notably, the ex-Oasis frontman played classic ‘Live Forever’ with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, igniting a huge singalong around Manchester’s 50,000-capacity Old Trafford.

Gallagher has previously spoken harshly about Martin, once saying he “looks like a geography teacher” and likening the singer to a “plant pot”.

Chris Martin Defends Noel Gallagher’s Absence From One Love Manchester Concert

Chris Martin has defended Noel Gallagher over his absence from the One Love Manchester benefit concert, insisting that everyone knew that he wasn’t able to attend in person.

Following Liam Gallagher’s angry tweets about his brother’s no-show, the Coldplay frontman has said that Noel “gave his blessing” for him to perform in his place.

“Thank you @noelgallagher for giving your blessing and encouragement to play don't look back in anger and live forever on Sunday,” he posted on the band’s official account on Tuesday.

“Everyone knew in advance you couldn't be there physically, so thank you for being there in spirit and for lending us those incredible songs. love cm.”

Later, he added: “And thank you @liamgallagher, that was awesome x cm + jb.”

Martin performed Don’t Look Back in Anger at the concert to raise money for the victims of the May 22 terror attacks and then dueted with Liam on Live Forever.

The former Oasis frontman flew in straight from his appearance at German festival Rock im Park to perform at Ariana Grande's huge fundraising show at Emirates Old Trafford.

Liam opened his set with Oasis hit Rock 'n' Roll star before performing new solo single Wall Of Glass.

He was then joined on stage by Coldplay's Chris Martin for a tearjerking duet of Oasis hit Live Forever.

Chris, who is said to have persuaded Liam to come and perform at the show, was earlier accompanied by Ariana as they performed Oasis hit Don't Look Back In Anger.

The song has become an anthem of Mancunian defiance in the wake of the terror attack that killed 22 people after her concert at Manchester Arena on May 22.

The Courteeners led 50,000 fans in a mass singalong at Emirates Old Trafford last weekend - and the scene was repeated at the venue tonight as the crowds chanted along.

There had been frenzied speculation that Oasis might reunite at tonight's show after Black Eyed Peas star Taboo Nawasha tagged the band in a tweet setting out the line-up - before quickly backtracking.

Liam said he would be 'up for it' when asked if he would be performing but said it clashed with a slot at the Rock im Park festival in Germany.

The rumours were reignited earlier tonight by a tweet from The Sun's showbiz writer Dan Wootton, who said he had been told Liam would appear.

Noel Gallagher is being urged to sing Don’t Look Back in Anger in an emotional climax at the One Love Manchester benefit concert.

Organisers of Ariana Grande’s One Love benefit want Noel, one of Manchester’s most famous sons, to join Coldplay frontman Chris Martin in a duet for the final song.

The friends have performed together before, at the 2012 Brit Awards. A source said: “It would be a fitting highlight to celebrate the resilience and unity of this great city.”

The former Oasis man has been telling Radio X about his first solo live show and how “people shouldn’t stay at home in fear”.

Liam Gallagher has admitted that it was important that he put on a good performance for his first solo live show in Manchester following the terrorist attacks in the city.

The former Oasis man launched his solo career with a gig at the O2 Ritz - just over a week after 22 people were killed in a bombing at the Manchester Arena, following an Ariana Grande.
Speaking to Radio X’s Johnny Vaughan this morning (1 June), Liam said of the homecoming gig: “It was a mad one - and obviously really emotional.

“I just wanted to put on a good performance, because of what had happened. As much as I enjoyed it, I just wanted to do well, do you know what I mean?

“[The gig] went really quick, you couldn’t hear nothing… so I’m not sure if it was one of our best. But sometimes the emotion comes through, the occasion isn’t about playing great or singing great, it’s just about being there, you know what I mean?

“Listen, I live down here in London, I’ve lived down here for 20 years, my kids are down here. My heart’s in Manchester always will be, I will always be a Manc, as they say.”

Speaking as a huge benefit show was announced for the city’s Emirates Old Trafford Stadium on Sunday 4 June, featuring Ariana Grande, Justin Bieber and Coldplay, Liam added: “Massive respect for the people that came out. It’s good to get back in the saddle, to get back in and not stay at home in fear, you know what I mean?”

Tickets for the One Love Manchester concert, which takes place at the Emirates Old Trafford on Sunday 4 June, will be Katy Perry, Pharrell Williams, Take That, Niall Horan, Miley Cyrus and Usher. Tickets for the show are on sale now. Radio X will be providing live coverage of the event.

Another On This Day In Oasis History...

On October 29th 2002, Noel Gallagher played an acoustic set set at the Fairplay charity gig at London's Astoria to raise money for the Make Trade Fair campaign.

NOEL GALLAGHER and CHRIS MARTIN teamed up to perform a cover of Smiths' 'STOP ME IF YOU THINK YOU'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE', as part of an amazing night of collaborations at the LONDON ASTORIA.

As previously reported, 'Fair Play' (October 29) was organised by Emily Eavis, the daughter of Glastonbury founder Michael. The show was intended to raise cash and awareness for Oxfam, helping to raise the profile of their Make Trade Fair campaign.

The bill featured Lamb, Idlewild, Noel Gallagher and Coldplay, who were billed as featuring 'special guests'.

After a solo set from Gallagher, which featured the likes of 'Wonderwall', 'Slide Away' and 'Married With Children', Coldplay took to the stage, and performed a handful of their own songs.

They were then joined by Ms Dynamite for a cover of  'Three Little Birds', and her own songs 'It Takes More' and 'Dy-Na-Mi-Tee'.

She was then replaced by Noel, who performed a duet of Coldplay's hit single 'Yellow', and Oasis' 'Live Forever'. During the duets, Martin appeared overcome, telling the audience that it was one of the best moments of his life. Their set also included a cover of [a]' 'Stop Me If You Think You've Heard This One Before', a song that originally featured on the legendary Manchester group's 1987 album, 'Strangeways, Here We Come'.

The Super Stress Mat Whitecross Faced Making A Documentary About Oasis

"The first two times I met Liam and Noel separately, I was absolutely s—ing myself," says superfan and filmmaker.

It’s a stern warning that has been repeated many times throughout history: You should never meet your heroes.

But that is exactly what documentary filmmaker Mat Whitecross did when he set out to make a movie about music superstars Oasis.

“I had the posters on the wall, I had the albums, the singles, I was reading about them every week in all the music magazines — so it was kind of nerve-wracking,” recalled the director of Oasis: Supersonic ahead of the music doc’s theatrical release.

“I was expecting it to be a disaster.”

Whitecross had good reason for concern. Not only did Oasis rise to become Britain’s biggest band in the ’90s with hits like Wonderwall, but the Manchester act’s two leads — Liam and Noel Gallagher — became notorious for sibling squabbles and fights, erratic behaviour and caustic outspoken statements.

These guys weren’t exactly ambassadors of affability.

“That’s part of the reason we made the film,” insisted Whitecross of the impetus to profile the estranged Gallaghers.

“You’ve got the two brothers and that love-hate relationship; that volatile thing that played out so publicly is fascinating. Bands now don’t have anywhere near the kind of danger around them.”

Buoyed by archive footage and intimate tales of scandalous road stories, Oasis: Supersonic has been gaining acclaim for its inspection of both the discord and devotion between the brothers that once brazenly called themselves the next Beatles.

Yet, even seven years after their final performance, Whitecross still isn’t able to get the siblings together in a room to talk about the storied career that earned them a place in the Guinness Book of Records for most consecutive Top Ten singles.

“Liam will talk very affectionately about Noel and Noel similarly about Liam.

“Then five minutes later, they slag each other off,” laughed the 39-year-old filmmaker who has directed music videos for the likes of Jay-Z and Coldplay.

“I used to joke these are like therapy sessions. For Liam, definitely — it was like the therapy he never had, but they both seemed to enjoy the process of going back in a huge amount of detail over the past.”

Noel Gallagher And Barry Gibb Have Made Plans To Go For A Curry

Barry was shocked when the 'Don't Look Back In Anger' songwriter made a beeline for him to reveal he's a big fan of his group the Bee Gees and the pair are going to go for an Indian meal in London.

The 'Night Fever' singer told The Daily Telegraph newspaper: "Noel Gallagher told me he always listened to my music. That to me is staggering. Because in the period when Oasis became big, we were gone. That was not our time.

"We're going to go for a curry. We can talk about what it was like being in a band with brothers."

The Bee Gees were comprised of Barry and his late younger siblings Maurice and Robin, while Noel was in Oasis with his younger brother Liam Gallagher before he quit the rock group following a huge bust-up between the pair in 2009.

Following their backstage hook-up at Glastonbury, Noel, 49, took to his Instagram account to upload a picture of him and Barry together and described their meeting as the "highlight" of his weekend at Michael Eavis' annual event at Worthy Farm in England.

He captioned the image: "Just got back from Glastonbury. This was THE highlight for me. One of my favourite songwriters of all time. BG and NG. (sic)"

Barry - who has sold more than 220 million records worldwide during his career - was thrilled to be asked by Chris Martin to join Coldplay on stage for their record-breaking fourth headline slot and he was touched that the crowd knew his two songs 'To Love Somebody' and 1977 disco classic 'Stayin' Alive'.

He said: "I was a nervous wreck ... but it was nice that people knew the songs."
