Noel Gallagher On "Transatlantic Pseudo-American Bullshit" That Dominates The Charts

Noel Gallagher has spoken about the current state of pop music and how the charts are dominated by "transatlantic pseudo-American bullshit".

He told the Sunday Times “The charts are still dominated by transatlantic pseudo-American bullshit, put a rap in and pop chorus on it. Email it to someone in Mogadishu to put some maracas over it. Make loads of money.”

He added “I grew up in the golden age of pop, late 1970s, early 1980s. Nobody talked about lyrics. You listened. You danced. It affected your life. Who cares what it’s about?”

When asked "when did that change?" he replied “Around Britpop, when everybody wanted to be considered ‘an artist’. When Travis and Coldplay came and it was all introverted, why-does-it- always-rain-on-me? It’s not just raining on you. It’s raining on everyone. I’d rather write a song about the umbrella, not the f****** rain. Look at everybody’s first Britpop album, Oasis’s. Blur’s. Pulp’s. Raging joy.”

When asked "but wasn’t the angst that came after that a reaction to the excesses?" he replied “I suppose it did get darker when drugs took over, yeah. And then you end up with the Libertines — lads with no teeth and their grandads’ hats.”

Noel Gallagher Says Music Was Much ‘Freer’ In The ’90s

Noel Gallagher has said that life and music was much ‘freer’ in the ’90s – and that today’s bands need to be a lot more ‘business-minded’.

Yesterday saw Gallagher announce his return with his upcoming new High Flying Birds Album ‘Who Built The Moon?’, along with details of a huge UK and Ireland arena tour. During an interview with Christian O’Connell on the Absolute Radio Breakfast Show, he discussed how the music industry and the general climate for bands has changed since the Britpop heyday when Oasis were at their peak.

“If you’re 20, and you’re entering the music business now, you won’t know what’s gone before,” said Gallagher. “So for a 20 year old you won’t realise, but the ‘90’s, it’s only now people are starting to realise what a fantastic decade that was, for all sorts of things, for politics, fashion, music, sport.

“There’s lots of stuff that’s stood the test of time, Trainspotting as you mentioned for one, and all those great bands, Oasis, Verve, Pulp, all that mob. It was a lot freer then for sure. When I meet younger bands they seem to have more of a career head on. Whereas back in the ‘90’s it was just you were kind of winging it and having a laugh.”

He added: “I think, but that comes from the people who run the music business I think. The success, and how many hits you’ve got on YouTube and this that and the other, and it’s a different game, it’s a different game for sure.”

In the same interview, Noel Gallagher discussed another big night he had out with Morrissey – who described as a ‘dude’ who took a shine to his wife. He also discussed the extent of his drunken antics (and painful hangovers) while recently on tour with U2.

Gallagher will release his third solo album ‘Who Built The Moon?’ on Friday November 24, before a huge arena tour follows next year.

Noel Gallagher Snubbed Trainspotting Soundtrack 'As He thought Film Was About Railway Enthusiasts'

Noel Gallagher missed out on featuring on the soundtrack for Trainspotting because he thought the film was about railway enthusiasts, it has emerged.

Director Danny Boyle was said to be desperate for Gallagher and his band Oasis to do a song for the 1996 movie starring Ewan McGregor, Robert Carlyle and Ewen Bremner.

The soundtrack of the film became a huge hit and featured fellow Britpop bands Blur and Pulp as well as US music stars Iggy Pop and Lou Reed.

However, the singer-songwriter turned down the chance to feature in the film about Edinburgh heroin addicts as he did not want to be associated with a film he thought was about train spotters.

The story was revealed during a question and answer session with Trainspotting producer Andrew Macdonald and costume designer Rachel Fleming at a 20th anniversary screening of the film.

Macdonald said: "Danny is from near Manchester and he was very keen to have Noel Gallagher do something but there was a reason why he didn't do it.

"He came to the launch party in Cannes, but I don't know why he didn't do a piece of music."

Fleming then said: "I met Noel at a thing the other week and he said to me: 'I would have done something, but honestly I thought it was about train spotters. I didn't know.' That's what he actually said."

Noel Gallagher On Being An Independent Artist

Noel Gallagher reckons he makes less money and wins fewer awards as an independent artist with his band High Flying Birds then he did when he was signed to a record label.

But according to the co-founder of Britpop band Oasis, he's enjoying working as an independent artist.

With Oasis, who signed to Creation Records in the UK and had a worldwide deal with Sony, Gallagher said he didn't like the people he had to deal with at the labels.

"I enjoy not working with people in record labels ... it's nice to get away from that mob," Gallagher said on The Project on Tuesday night.

The British musician was speaking from Byron Bay where he performed over the weekend at Bluesfest.

Last year, his album Chasing Yesterday with his solo project Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds reached number one in the UK, but in typical sardonic fashion he explained how he doesn't make much money or get many accolades for his music now.

"I enjoy the lack of money that I make. I enjoy the lack of record sales. I also enjoy the lack of recognition and the lack of awards that I receive because quite frankly my mantelpiece was chokka-block with the f*****g things, it's nice to take a backseat," he said.

By the time they split in 2009, Oasis had sold about 70 million records - they had also won a total of 37 awards for their music, including Brits, MTV Europe Music Awards and NME Awards.

When the band first broke onto the scene in the 1990s they were purveyors of the Britpop genre along with bands such as Blur and Pulp. It was a genre inspired by retro pop bands such as The Beatles and comprised of standard rock group instrumentation - guitars, drums and lead singer.

In the current production-led climate, it could be difficult to see where Oasis would fit in. Their closest comparison today might be Coldplay who work with dance producers such as Avicii, or The Arctic Monkeys who aren't afraid to mix it up with some psychedelic influences.

However, Gallagher reckons there would still be a place for them musically.

"There'd be some major differences the way the music business is - the music will remain timeless so I think it'd be the same but we'd probably have worse clothes and less of a drug habit, probably," he said.

While he's been performing in Australia with his solo project, he still plays Oasis hits on stage.

"I give the people what they want as long as I can play what I want, everybody goes home happy," he said.

Gallagher has three more gigs in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth before he flies out for a European and US tour that brings him right up until the end of August.

He's still playing gigs after more than 20 years in the music business, and he knows that's something to be grateful for, regardless of what material from what period of his career he's performing.

"To see people reacting to new songs is great and all the old stuff is great and I'm just glad to be still doing it at my age quite frankly," he said.

Richard Ashcroft Is Open To Working With Noel Gallagher

The Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft has suggested that he would be open to working with Noel Gallagher, telling NME in a new interview: "in the future who knows what might happen".

Ashcroft speaks to NME in an exclusive cover feature in this week's magazine (available now, free in the UK).

Ahead of releasing new album 'These People' on May 14, Ashcroft bemoaned the current state of the music industry, saying that he's "got no faith in it whatsoever".

He continued: "It’s sold itself up the river, stabbed people in the back instead of trying to create a good, solid British music alternative. Turn left for Cowell, turn right for this. The mainstream consumed our culture."

"You can get as many songwriters in a room as you want for your new talent show contest winner, it’s never gonna sound like a great Noel Gallagher song sung by Liam, it’s never gonna reach ‘Live Forever’, it’s never gonna be [Verve song] ‘Lucky Man’. We know that."

Last year, Noel Gallagher said he’d be interested in making an album with Ashcroft.

Asked whether he would work with Gallagher, Ashcroft replied: "It’s a great compliment for Noel to say something like that, and in the future who knows what might happen. I wish things like this would’ve happened years ago."

Ashcroft went on to speak of his fondness for his Britpop peers, saying: "Even the guys we had a bit of friction with, I look back and wish them luck. If I hear [Pulp frontman] Jarvis Cocker on the radio it gives me a good feeling. He’s waving a flag for culture from that time. We’re not stopping."

Noel Gallagher: I Saw The End Of Brit Pop

Noel Gallagher revealed he saw the end up Brit Pop before it fizzled out.

The songwriter's former group Oasis were the biggest band to emerge from the rock sub genre than came from the UK in the 90s and although it was a very special time for music he knew it was the end era.

He said: ''It was an anniversary of something recently and somebody showed me a list of the album chart back them and in one week, it was Oasis, The Verve The Manics, Pulp and Blur, were like at least five of the top ten, and had been for most of that year. And I felt, I remember saying at the time that that era was the end of something, that that would be the last time that something like that would happen. There just isn't that culture any more. I have a 15-year-old daughter who is like, 'Albums? They take too much time just give me the track man.'

''I guess it was the end of pop music as we knew it and then the internet came along and bingo.''

Meanwhile, the 48-year-old musician added that he was inspired to write albums with B sides by the soul and rock groups of the '60s, such as The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys.

He told Steve Lamaq on BBC Radio Six: ''We were all derived from, maybe not so much The Manics, but we certainly were derived from those pop records and The Verve were the same and Blur probably.''

Noel Gallagher Blames Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian And Bastille For The State Of English Music

Noel Gallagher has spoken about the lack of working-class voices in contemporary music, suggesting the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian have made no impact in terms of encouraging any new “noise coming from the council estates”.

During an interview for the BBC Master Tapes show, via NME, a member of the audience questioned the Oasis founder about the health of the current British music scene. “You only have to look at the charts, what happened at the end of the 90s, all those bands used to be in the top 10, like us, Manics, Pulp, the Verve, Suede and Blur, and I think bands like that have been marginalised and sidelined,” he said. “There’s X Factor and all that kind of thing, but you name me the last great band that came out of this country? There’s not really been any great bands in the last 10 years.”

Specifically lamenting the lack of exciting bands (adding that One Direction were “not a band” but a group), Gallagher said that Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian had done little in the last decade to expand the variety of musicians operating in an increasingly middle-class music industry: "Shame on those two bands for a start because they didn’t inspire anybody else. The working classes have not got a voice any more. There doesn’t seem to be a noise coming from the council estates, you know what I mean?

I’d have eaten Bastille alive in an afternoon in the 90s, one interview, destroyed, gone, never to be heard of again. Easy, had ’em for breakfast. My bass player summed it up – we’re constantly saying: ‘Where is the next band coming from?’ and he rightly says: ‘Never mind the band, where are the people?’”

Gallagher added: “When I first started I wanted to get in the charts and wreck it, like stamp Phil Collins out and Wet Wet Wet, they’ve got to go, and all that 80s gear, we don’t need that any more. I don’t see anything from the working class, I just don’t see it.”

The musician’s recent statements echo his comments from a 2013 interview in weekly men’s magazine Shortlist, claiming that it was only the “middle-class” bands that refused to play at Teenage Cancer Trust gigs taking place at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

The new album from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Chasing Yesterday, is released in March.

Oasis Dominate Vinyl Sales Chart

Official Charts Company release list of big sellers from the fallow years of vinyl.

Considering that figures for UK vinyl sales in 2013 have reached a reported 12 year high, it’s not altogether surprising that all but two of the 20 biggest selling records of the last two decades listed by the Official Charts Company and NME were released in the preceding 8 years.

Leading the way with first and second place are Oasis, whose What’s The Story Morning Glory? pips Definitely Maybe to the top spot, with Portishead’s Dummy taking the final podium place. Although The Beatles also figure strongly, the list is a pretty succinct document of the more adventurous end of the mid-90′s mainstream, dominated as it is by Brit pop (Oasis, Blur, Pulp) and its Mod and Madchester fore-runners (Paul Weller, Stone Roses), Bristolian trip hop (Massive Attack, Portishead) and The Prodigy.

While it is no surprise to see Radiohead’s The King Of Limbs sneak into the chart as the only LP released post-2001, the next most recent entrant is Travis, whose The Invisible Band peaks at a heady forth spot. (via NME)

Beady Eye Kick Off Glastonbury 2013 To Thousands Of Eager Fans

Beady Eye opened this year's Glastonbury festival with thousands of fans sprinting to the main stage to see their unadvertised secret set.

Liam Gallagher's band were the first band on at the English music event held on Worthy Farm in Pilton, Somerset, after a posting on the group's official Twitter account cryptically revealed a time and date which coincides with the start of the festival.

The tweet read, 'Where will you BE? 11am 28.06.13.'

Liam also posted on Twitter: '11am Friday - BE there or BE square..LG x'. (sic)

Liam was joined by his wife Nicole Appleton and three children Lennon, Molly and Gene who watched the main man perform from the side of the stage.

The last time Liam, guitarist Gem Archer and lead guitarist Andy Bell played at Glastonbury in 2004 they headlined with Oasis - which disbanded after Noel Gallagher quit in August 2009.

The super-group also topped the bill in 1995 after performing one of the sets of the weekend in 1994 - a performance which organiser Michael Eavis has listed in his top five festival moments.

His daughter Emily Eavis also included Oasis' 95 headline slot as one of her favourite moments in the festival's illustrious history.

She said: '1995 was a great year. It was the height of Britpop, and that was reflected in all the great bands who played - Oasis, Elastica, The Verve.

'Pulp were amazing, headlining the Pyramid stage. Plus, the weather was gorgeous. Another thing I remember is Robbie Williams turning up backstage. At that point he was still in Take That, so everyone was totally amazed to see him there. He bowled up to the festival with bright yellow hair.

'I remember thinking, Is that really him? He was hanging out with Oasis, running around - totally manic. And then of course he joined Oasis on stage. It was quite a spontaneous thing - I don't think he'd planned it at all.

'It seemed like that weekend convinced him that life in Take That was not for him. He seemed to have some kind of epiphany.'

Liam - who has just released the band's second album 'BE' - had claimed he wouldn't play the iconic event again because it was now full of 'celebrities' and had lost touch with its hippy roots.

The secret guests when the festival was last staged in 2011 were Pulp and Radiohead and rumours have circulated that David Bowie could also make a shock appearance this weekend.

Louise Mullock, spokesperson for Seatwave, said: 'Demand for Rolling Stones tickets is always high, however in the days preceding their Glastonbury performance we have seen ticket demand surge beyond expectations.

'Despite their advancing years, Sir Mick and his cohorts are still able draw huge audiences.'

Oasis Dominate 'Greatest Britpop Anthem Of All Time' Poll

Oasis have dominated a vote by NME readers to establish the Greatest Britpop Anthem Of All Time with the top five spots all being filled by songs from the band.

'Live Forever', the 1994 single taken from the bad's debut album 'Definitely Maybe', topped the poll and was closely followed by 'Don't Look Back In Anger', 'Supersonic' and 'Cigarettes & Alcohol', with 'Wonderwall' finishing in fifth spot. The Manchester band did not get any other songs into the top 20, however, with all of the remaining slots taken by songs from Pulp, Suede, Blur and Supergrass.

Pulp's 'Common People', which came top of the recent list compiled by NME writers and famous fans, finished in sixth spot. The Sheffield band proved popular with voters also selecting their songs 'Disco 2000', 'Sorted For E's & Wizz' and 'This Is Hardcore' in the top 20.

Oasis Up For Inclusion In Music Walk Of Fame

Camden Town is to get a Hollywood-style walk of fame, which will honour pop music greats linked with the area such as Pink Floyd, Oasis and Amy Winehouse.

Endorsed by the Los Angeles movie-star original, Camden's will honour music's greatest performers with a bronze and stone disc, presumably to mimic a vinyl record, set in the pavement. Each disc is set to cost about £500.

Those chosen will be split into five groups: influential artists; innovative artists; unsung heroes; and industry types. After a committee has come up with a shortlist, we all get the chance to vote on the Music Walk of Fame's website.

The shortlist hasn't been decided yet, but hints have been dropped that among those in the first tranche will be Pink Floyd, Soft Machine, The Doors, Marc Bolan, The Move, Cream, Hawkwind, Blur, Oasis, Pulp, Supergrass, Suede, Madonna, Radiohead and Public Enemy.

The list is to be announced in May.

Noel Gallagher To Curate 2013 Teenage Cancer Trust Concerts

The Who's Roger Daltrey has told NME that Noel Gallagher is set to curate next year's Concerts For Teenage Cancer Trust.

The gigs, which Daltrey founded in 2000, have been staged every year by the charity's patron at London's Royal Albert Hall. But the frontman said he will now pass the baton on to the ex-Oasis chief in 2013. Gallagher has performed a series of solo gigs at the venue for the charity over the years. His brother Liam's band Beady Eye also played in 2011.

Daltrey told NME: I'm not doing it next year because I'm on tour and Noel Gallagher has kindly offered to step in. So he's putting the bill together. Obviously I'm in the background and I'm not going away. I'll put feelers out but he kindly offered and I accepted. Daltrey added: "I'm on the road all the way through to the beginning of March. So it really helped me out. Instead of being on the beach on my vacation in January on the bloody cellphone for eight hours a day, I can actually get some sleep."

The frontman also said that he's started the charity up in the US. He explained: "I've made a rod for my back because I've just started Teen Cancer America so we're basically shipping our model for how teenagers should be cared for in hospitals when they have cancer to the USA, we're trying to educate them in the same manner."

"I've just launched that and I think it's going to catch fire. because there's a huge lack of care there, they're not even recognised as a group."

The line-up for next year's shows is yet to be unveiled. Pulp, Paul McCartney and Florence And The Machine were among the acts that performed at the 2012 event.

Noel Gallagher: The 90s Was The End Of The Rock Star

Noel Gallagher has confessed to Xfm that the decade 'was not the beginning of something - it was the end of something'...

Noel Gallagher reckons that the 90s was the end of the rockstar era. Speaking to Xfm backstage at the iTunes Festival the singer admitted that he believes he and his Britpop contemporaries were the last of their kind.

"The 90s was not the beginning of something - it was the end of something. It was the end of the music business as we knew it. We were the last rock stars," he told Xfm's Dan O'Connell backstage.

He continued, "I will argue it to my death: there will never be another time like it where any given time in the top ten there were bands - who we all cared about - like Pulp and Blur and Oasis the Manic Street Preachers and they're selling shitloads of records and shaping youth culture - that's never going to happen again."

 Noel was speaking before his headline set at the iTunes Festival at London's Roundhouse - where he also admitted to us that he is taking next year off - to avoid creating another lacklustre album like Be Here Now.

They'll battle likes of Kasabian, Odd Future and Azealia Banks for gongs at next month's ceremony.

Arctic Monkeys, Noel Gallagher, Lana Del Rey, The Vaccines and Odd Future are among the acts nominated for gongs at this year's NME Awards.

The nominations were announced exclusively on Zane Lowe's BBC Radio 1 show earlier tonight (January 30) – see below for the full list and head to NME.COM/awardsvote now to cast your vote. The winners will be announced at the ceremony at O2 Academy Brixton on February 29.

Arctic Monkeys – who've scored seven nominations in total – will go head-to-head with Kasabian, Bombay Bicycle Club, The Horrors and Muse for the Best British Band award. The Best New Band category, meanwhile, will be contested by Lana Del Rey, Tribes, The Vaccines, Wu Lyf and Foster The People.

Kasabian, Florence And The Machine, Muse are up for three gongs each, while The Horrors, Hurts and The Vaccines are among the acts nominated for two awards.

Noel Gallagher – who's due to pick up our prestigious Godlike Genius Award on the night – is up for another four gongs, including Best Album for 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' and Best Solo Artist.

Meanwhile, Odd Future will take on the likes of Foo Fighters and The Strokes for Best International Band, while Azealia Banks' '212' is up for Dancefloor Anthem alongside tracks by Katy B and Justice.

Liam Gallagher: 'Beady Eye Aren't Fucking Scared Of The Strokes'

Liam Gallagher has declared that he and his Beady Eye bandmates aren't scared of the competition at this summer's Reading And Leeds Festivals.

Beady Eye are set to headline the NME/Radio 1 Stage at the August events. The Strokes, Muse, My Chemical Romance and Pulp will all play Main Stage headline slots.

When asked about The Strokes Gallagher told NME: "We weren't fucking scared of them the first time we heard them. We're not fucking scared of them now!"

Speaking about how he thought he'd adapt to playing one of Beady Eye's first festival shows, he added: "I'll comfortably fucking fit back into that dress."

Beady Eye To Play Melt Festival

Beady Eye are pleased to announce they will be playing this year's Melt Festival in Berlin, Germany on 16th July.
