Noel Gallagher On Beady Eye, Oasis, The Stone Roses And More

Noel Gallagher talks to Alan Corr about touring solo, Oasis, The Stone Roses and why he's due a very long break.

Upstairs in Marlay House, located suitably enough in south Dublin's expansive Marlay Park, it looks like Noel Thomas David Gallagher has just gotten out of bed.

It is the early evening of hiss gig last August in support of Kasabian and sunlight streams through tall, leaded windows while outside, we can hear The Cribs up on stage playing another one of their energetic shows.

Lying on the table in front of Noel is his set list for tonight's gig with his new band, High Flying Birds. Don't Look Back in Anger, Talk Tonight, Supersonic . . . that's a lot of songs by your old band, I remark.

"Well, they are my songs," he says without raising a famous eyebrow.

This is Noel Gallagher 2012, three years after finally, and with great relief, walking out of Oasis and one year after releasing a debut solo album which has pretty much reaffirmed him as one of the most successful and possibly important British rock stars of the past twenty years.

"Apart from Robbie Williams after Take That, I can't think of any other bloke who's been in a big band and gone solo and had this kind of success," he says without any degree of smugness because smugness is not a natural condition for a working class lad.

"It's phenomenal. The album is back in the top ten at the moment. I guess setting out to do this I didn't have any preconceptions of what I was going to do. It's just going to make my life very difficult the next time - how do I top this?

"Then again," Gallagher adds, and this time the famous eyebrow does do an imperious arch, "I was also thinking, the more successful it is the more time off I'm going to have. Hahaha."

You may have heard it before, but Noel Gallagher is very good company and not even a power cut later that evening during his set can dampen his spirits. The Marlay gig is his fourth visit to Ireland this year. "Yeah, four. I don't know why I came back for the fourth time. Somebody thinks it's a good idea," he says. "The Olympia, The o2, Red Hot Chili Peppers and Belfast and now this - actually, five times. Someone's obviously buying it. Hahahaha."

It must be good to have no one to answer to and no one to answer him back. Noel may perform Oasis songs as a solo act now but does he have a favourite song by Beady Eye? "The Roller. I think their album is pretty good to be honest. They're fantastic musicians. They're only one hit single away from outselling The Arctic Monkeys, do you know what I mean?

"They've sold 10,000 less, so I'm told, but I think they've done alright but it's evident that I'm the one who wrote all the singles in Oasis before we split so it's evident that somebody in that group has got to step up and write some singles. But it's good for a first album. it's not as good as my first album though."

Quite. It's far too soon to discuss a possible Oasis reunion but there is another Manchester band who defied all expectations and reformed this year and Gallagher would have seen The Stone Roses' reunion at very close quarters. Given that Oasis took the Roses' look and attitude and achieved what they never did, it puts him an interesting position to comment but was it all just about the money with The Roses' reunion?

"I don't know," he says. "Money plans a big part in those things but I will say this - I've never seen them so happy, individually or as a group and I've known them for the best part of twenty years. My dressing room was beside them and I was hanging out with them a bit and I've never seen John Squire, ever, so animated. Mani and Ian are the two most animated in the band but John and Reni I've never seen so happy. If they make another record, great. I know they've signed a deal but whether they do, I don't know.

"As for money, you have to be take an interest in the business side of things when you're in this industry. All the records and the videos for my solo stuff cost about two and a bit million and then you have to pay everybody on the tour so that's a couple of million out of my kids' inheritance . . . don't tell them that hahahahaha."

So when he's a man of leisure at home, what does he do? "I write . . . well when I say I write, I don't have a special room where I go. I don't go to write anywhere. I get up with the kids in the morning, see them off to school, I've got a gym in the house so I might go to the gym, appease the wife and then . . . I really enjoy doing nothing. I'll read the papers on the internet.

"I don't watch TV but if I've taped anything I might watch it. Whatever's going on, I'll just deal with it and if not, I just do nothing. When I get off this tour, I'm having a massive party in London so I will be out of the game for a couple of days and then I'll look at football fixtures and plan the rest of the season. I won't be working for a long time after this tour."

Does he get sentimental? "No." he says anf then thinks again. "Well I get sentimental about the Hacienda and the days of Acid House and the days of being anonymous, just a punter going to see The Smiths and New Order and being at The Hacienda when nobody knew who I was, just f***ing doing pills and dancing all night.

"I get nostalgic for those days, they were great and being able to go to a football match and stand with the fans instead of going to a football match now and having to stand behind a glass f***ing screen with the savages but I don't get nostalgic for . . .

"Well ok, it would be great to be transported back in time to see The Smiths but would it be great to see The Smiths knowing what we all know now - that they weren't having a good time on stage? Probably not but that's what YouTube's for right? Click and there you are. It was great to see The Stone Roses - the more you have to drink, the younger you become."

Gallagher's plans for a more electronic album with Amorphous Androgynous have been scrapped ("It didn't sound great.") but he has just released a double DVD set called International Magic Live at The o2 featuring a live set at London's o2 from earlier this year. Disc two features an acoustic set by at The Mod Club Toronto, the Ride The Tiger video trilog, and footage from the NME Awards.

Gallagher's own stage time at Marlay is due and as it picks up that set list, I ask him what's it like playing Oasis songs without Liam or anyone from the "old band"? "It's great. I only do the ones that suit me. I wouldn't do Rock `n' Roll Star or any of those," he says. "They belong to a different era. I don't really think about it.

"When I started out touring solo I thought I'm not going to get out of the building without doing Don't Look Back in Anger so I gotta do that and then my whole entire repertoire thus far, including b-sides, clocks in at about an hour and I'm contracted to play for an hour and forty minutes so I have to thrown some Oasis songs in.

"The next time I go out on tour, whenever that is, I won't be doing that many Oasis songs because I'll have all this album to play and all the next album so this is only for now. I have no problem playing Oasis songs - they're my songs and I'm proud of `em."

Comrades . . . this will be a long one.

So, the last time we spoke was when? 2 weeks ago? Must have been? Was it? Hang on . . . let me check . . . that's right . . . it was the night before the festival in Belgium. OK . . . right I'll get my thinking cap on and give you the lo-down (as best I can anyway!).

So . . . I remember the festival being quite a big one. Massive crowd. Big guns headlining. Think it was them Red Hot Chilli Peppers on my night (yes it was!). The show itself was OK. Not bad. It certainly broke the run of amazing shows that's for sure. The best thing about it was I was introduced onstage by Vincent Kompany, Manchester City's captain. He's from Brussels see? And me and him were going to do the launch of the new Manchester City kits for next season. Both of these occurrences were a true honour. Vinnie's a top boy. Might actually be the coolest lad on the planet. We hung out after the show and watched the Euro Championship final. Happy days!!

The next day I had to be up early to do the football kit thing. Hadn't actually gone to bed 'till 4am so I wasn't feeling (or looking!) the best. Vinnie on the other hand had managed an early night and turned up looking like the super-cool, well oiled athlete he is. I on the other hand stunk of cig's and alcohol looking every bit like the 45yr old father of 3 that I am. Not good. Not good at all. In all my time in this game that might have been the single most difficult thing I've ever had to do.

At one point I think I was sweating pure alcohol. Imagine doing that while one of your heroes looks down on you and asks if you're alright, while a photographer snaps away asking you if "you could just get a bit closer?" Did it though and the kit looks the bollocks.

So, after that I remember we flew to Montreux in Switzerland for a show at the "Montreux Jazz Festival"!! That's right, you heard . . . "the Montreux JAZZ Festival". Not sure what I was doing there but a gig's a gig and what a gig!! A right good laugh and all. And I got presented (on stage which was a bit weird) with a very expensive watch by the founder of the festival Mr. Claude Nobs (pronounced CLOUD NEBZ). Worth €3000!! Or so he informed the audience anyway. Thanks very much Mr.Nobs . . . just what I've always wanted . . . my very own jazz watch!!

After that we drove overnight to Milan. I love Milan and Italy in general. Weather was mad hot. Must've been nearly 100 onstage!! Not as hot as Coachella but proper sizzling all the same. Show was alright. Nothing more, nothing less. I remember being taken out for dinner after to some swanky footballery type gaff. Very nice it was too . . . Beckham used to go there I'm told.

So . . . after that would have been T In the Park? Yes, I think so!! Horrific weather. Dark black clouds. Torrential rain, rain, rain. Mud every-fucking-where. Horrible . . . and that was just BACKSTAGE!!! Lord only knows what it was like out front? Still (and this is truly amazing) it never spoiled the atmosphere. The crowd up there are something else. Unbelievable behaviour. Well done!

We had a great show bar a couple of hic-ups here and there but we smashed it!! We were on before the Stone Roses. It was great to see them AND to see them enjoying themselves. A great night all round.

After that we flew to Birmingham to do a little acoustic gig for that radio station Kerrang!! That's right, you heard. A heavy metal radio station. Don't ask . . . I didn't. It was good though.

So . . . after that we flew here to the south of France. Fucking plane was full of young people (off on their holidays one would imagine). Giggling girls and boys with sideways haircuts and girls jeans on . . . that's what it looked like to me anyway.

I think that's about it. Got a festival tonight. A big one . . . it must be big 'cause the mighty Franz Ferdinand are headlining!! What was that?? Of course they're still going!!!!

Noel Gallagher Is On Song As He Takes On Roy Keane, 'Crazy' Hurling... And Westlife

He described hurling as "gangwar with sticks" and dismissed Westlife calling it a day as "hardly The Beatles breaking up".

But, strangely, lifelong Manchester City fan Noel Gallagher was full of praise for former Manchester United legend Roy Keane yesterday, describing him as "one of the best five players the Premier League ever had".

The 45-year-old was speaking at Croke Park yesterday, ahead of his gig supporting the Red Hot Chili Peppers last night, and revealed plans for a joint headliner with Kasabian in Marlay Park on August 23.

It's not often you hear disparaging comments about Gaelic sports at a press conference in GAA headquarters but there was no stopping former Gaelic schoolboy footballer Noel.

Revealing that his elder brother Paul still followed the Mayo team, Mr Gallagher said: "I've seen a few matches here over the years.

"It's a great game and quite exciting but hurling ? F*** that. That's like gang war with sticks. I'm not too sure about that. Any sport where you have to wear a helmet is wrong," he said.

The former Oasis guitarist was returning to Croke Park for the first time in nearly 30 years after scoring on the hallowed pitch in 1983 as part of a visiting Manchester side Oisin's.

"It's all done up now. I'm not sure there was even seats. I scored a point but I can't remember at which end," he said, recalling the match against local side, Kilmacud Crokes.

The future rock 'n' roll star had stayed with the family of one of the players from Kilmacud on that visit in April 1983 and was reminded of that weekend in the capital when he met an Irish fan while on tour in Australia in January this year.

"I was out shopping in Melbourne when I bumped into this Irish guy about the same age. He asked me had I been in Dublin on a particular date," he said.

"I said 'Yes I had. He told me his Mam and Dad in Dublin had a picture of me when I must have stayed in their house. They had often wondered over the years if it was me, the same Noel Gallagher . . . apparently I used to eat a lot of Weetabix," he said.

Describing how he hung up his GAA boots and started a rock band, he joked: "I had gone as far as I could. It was decided, that I would be better off in the music business. I enjoyed it at the time.

"I was still at school, then quickly after school, the smoking and drinking take over. Playing football goes out the window. Anyway I'm not an athlete, too much hard graft goes into that," he said.

Despite being a fanatical fan of Manchester City, he went on to reveal how he rates Keane of rivals Manchester United as one of his favourite all time players.

"He is easily one of the top five players that the Premier League has ever had. I thought he was a great player for United. If only England had Roy Keane now, they would win games. He was the one player who could take a game by the scruff of the neck and bully his teammates from three goals down to win. He was immense," said Gallagher.

Asked about the Corkman's comments on Irish fans singing as their side was losing, he added: " Roy is pure comedy. He should take over the Ireland job if he thinks he can do it better than anyone else.

"I've never met him but he probably hates me like everybody else," he said.

The star claimed to be unaware Westlife ended their 14-year career with farewell gigs in Croke Park last Saturday night.

"Westlife, have they been killed? What, they've split up ? Well, it's hardly The Beatles breaking up? They've split up, good, brilliant -- there'll be a party tonight so," he joked.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds Announces Double Header With Kasabian

Noel Gallagher this afternoon announced details of an upcoming double-headliner gig with Kasabian at Marlay Park on Thursday 23rd August. The supporting bill includes Yorkshire 3-piece The Cribs. Gallagher and MCD made the announcement in a joint press conference in Croke Park ahead of Gallagher's support slot this evening with Red Hot Chili Peppers.

This will be Noel Gallagher's fourth Irish show in less than a year, after performances in The Olympia, The O2 and tonight's Croke Park gig.

Tickets will cost €49.50 and will be on sale from this Friday 29th June at 9am from Ticketmaster.

Noel Gallagher Lines Out At Croker Again After Making His Point 30 Years Ago

There are a few more wrinkles these days, but the bushy eyebrows and rock star sneer have not changed.

Oasis legend Noel Gallagher returns to Croke Park tonight to support the Red Hot Chili Peppers, nearly 30 years after scoring at the GAA headquarters.

Back in April 1983, the then 16-year-old was more in danger of becoming a GAA All-Star than a rock 'n' roll star.

He visited Croker when his Manchester-based Oisin's GAA club played an exhibition match at the ground.

Mr Gallagher gets the chance to play the stadium again tonight as his post-Oasis band, the High Flying Birds, supports the Red Hot Chilli Peppers.

Padraig Johnson, chairman and then selector of the GAA club, said that back in 1983 Mr Gallagher would not have realised that he was playing on hallowed turf.

"To be honest with you, looking back, I'm not sure if Noel or any of his teammates knew the significance of playing in Croke Park."

The young Gallagher -- seen here pulling a face next to the goalie -- is remembered by Mr Johnson as "always up for mischief".

"But Noel wasn't a bad kid. He was just like a lot of young men you meet, a little bit wild. You'd coach him and he'd listen.

"All in all, he was a very promising young player, and might have gone further in the GAA if he hadn't taken up rock 'n' roll," added Mr Johnson, who himself progressed to be president of the GAA in Britain.

The game at Croke Park came completely by chance, when the Manchester side were invited over to Dublin for the weekend by local side Kilmacud Crokes. "A few strings were pulled and at 11.30 one Saturday morning, I saw my young lads from Manchester coming out under the Hogan Stand to the sound of 'Amhran na bhFiann'," he said.

Gallagher's debut on the hallowed field is remembered in Croke Park's museum, in a book on display commemorating Oisin's centenary in 2004.

And the experience clearly did stick in the memory as the star has previously spoken about the game himself.

"We came to Dublin to play exhibition games against some Dublin teams in Croke Park. We were hammered though. But I scored a point."

Both Noel and Liam Gallagher played for the Oisin side but Mr Johnson said he "has no idea" why brother Liam Gallagher was not part of the weekend trip.

The Gallagher brothers were born and brought up in Longsight, Manchester by parents Thomas Gallagher, originally from Duleek, Co Meath, and Peggy Sweeney, from Swinford, Co Mayo.

Oasis & Red Hot Chili Peppers For New Movie Soundtrack

The producers of the live-action film adaptation of Harold Sakuishi's Beck rock-and-roll manga announced at a Tuesday event in Tokyo that the American band Red Hot Chili Peppers and the British band Oasis will contribute the two theme songs of the film. Red Hot Chili Peppers will provide the opening theme song "Around the World," while Oasis will provide the ending theme song "Don't Look Back in Anger."

The film will open in Japan on September 4. Red Hot Chili Peppers had previously given their "Dani California" theme song for the live-action film adaptation of Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata's Death Note manga. Oasis provided the opening theme song "Falling Down" for Production I.G's Eden of The East television anime series.

The original manga ended in Kodansha's Monthly Shonen Magazine in 2008 in Japan, and 15 million copies of the 34 volumes have been published since it began in 1998. Whereas Koyuki was the protagonist of the original manga, the film will focus on Ryusuke. Tokyopop published the first 12 volumes in North America, and Funimation completed its release of 2004-2005's BECK: Mongolian Chop Squad anime version in 2008.
