Pete Doherty played a raucous Halloween gig in an east London flat last Friday (October 31).

The gig, which was advertised on internet forums, saw Doherty return to the tiny Whitechapel flat he had played at last Monday (October 27).

Taking to the makeshift stage wearing a black cat mask, and with a cigarette poking out from behind his ear, Doherty launched straight into a slowed-down version of The Strokes' 2001 single 'The Modern Age'.

The rest of Doherty's set was made up of his own songs, including Babyshambles' 'Fuck Forever', The Libertines' 'Never Never' and unreleased track '1939 Returning'.

Rumours that Amy Winehouse would also sing at the gig proved to be false, although Doherty's Babyshambles bandmate Mik Whitnall did perform a solo set, taking requests from the crowd.

Whitnall's set included covers of The Libertines 'I Get Along' and Oasis' 'Cigarettes And Alcohol'.

As NME.COM previously reported, Pete Doherty is set to play a solo gig at the Monarch in Camden this Thursday (November 6).

Rock’n’Roll superstars Oasis returned to the north-east for the first time in three years at the weekend to blow away two capacity crowds at the Press and Journal Arena.

However, the Gallagher brothers’ Aberdeen gigs were almost marred by an attempted stage invasion on Saturday when a fan had to be wrestled off the stage as Liam and Noel departed.

The Manchester legends last performed before a sellout crowd in the Granite City back in December 2005 – and probably could have sold out the AECC 10 times over for their long-awaited return.

In a financial climate where even the world’s biggest banks are having to borrow money, the admission price of nearly £40 was fairly steep.

But with the Gallagher brothers in such impressive form, it did not seem to matter.

They burst on to the stage with a searing version of Rock’n’Roll Star, followed by Lyla and current single Shock of the Lightning.

There were the obvious highlights such as rousing renditions of 1990s favourites Slide Away, Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back in Anger – but there were also some gems from the new album, Dig Out Your Soul.

I’m Outta Time, written by Liam, was followed by Falling Down, Waiting For The Rapture and To be Where There’s Light.

They finished off the 90-minute set in traditional fashion, with Champagne Supernova and Beatles cover I Am the Walrus.

They left to deafening applause.

However, the night was almost spoiled by a man trying to evade security and run on to the stage.

He managed to scale the barrier at the front of the arena and jumped on to the edge of the stage as the band were heading off.

The incident comes just weeks after the band had to cancel dates when Noel Gallagher failed to recover from injuries received during a stage invasion in Canada.

The 41-year-old needed hospital treatment after being knocked over when a man stormed on stage during the V Festival in Toronto in September.

Grampian Police said no one had been charged with any offence over the Aberdeen incident.

Former members of the legendary Dire Straits and English group Oasis will be dropping into the Thatch in Rahan this week.

John Illsley (Dire Straits) and Greg Pearle plays The Thatch next Monday, November 10, while Oasis legend Bonehead and singer-songwriter Pete Macleod take to this stage this Friday, November 7.

John Illsley was the bass player with the legendary 120 million album selling Dire Straits and contributing vocalist to their Communiqué, Making Movies and Brothers in Arms albums until the group dissolved in 1995. John also released two albums of his own, Never Told A Soul in 1984 and Glass in 1988.

Until recently, John had retired from music and moved to rural Hampshire with his family to focus on his other passion, painting. He bought a local pub, the East End Arms, and The George Hotel on the Isle of Wight, and began exhibiting his art around the world.

Everything changed when he met the Irish rock group Cunla in a pub in Leicestershire. This was in March 2005, when Greg Pearle was their singer, and the vibe was so intense that John took to the stage for the first time since 1993, joining the band to play a couple of Dire Straits' numbers.

John recalls: 'I was asked to play a few tunes with them. I liked their attitude and the fact that despite the large quantities of Guinness that had been consumed they could all play very well.'

To coincide with an exhibition of his art in Les Baux de Provence, John was asked to perform some Dire Straits songs.
"The Mayor of the town asked me and it's not done in France to refuse the Mayor. I asked Cunla if they could learn some Dire Straits songs and it turned out that Greg was a big fan and knew a lot of the songs already," said John.

John and Cunla played at the Festival des Alpilles, performing to 1300 people in the Cathedral D'Image in Les Baux de Provence. The show was recorded and John was 'pleasantly surprised' by the results. 'I initially wanted the band to have a record of their French experience but several people heard it and encouraged us to release it.'

John and Greg became friends and John discovered that Greg was a songwriter. "We spent some time knocking his songs into shape then began recording them in Mark Knopfler's fabulous studio in Hammersmith. Wait 'til you hear them. Greg writes brilliant songs and has an amazing voice," he said.

John and Greg will play the Thatch Rahan on Monday November 10.

Meanwhile acclaimed singer-songwriter Pete Macleod and Oasis legend Bonehead are touring together this autumn.
Pete Macleod and Bonehead have come together to create a special one-off acoustic tour. This is the first time that Pete Macleod has toured the UK and is one of Bonehead's rare appearances since leaving Oasis. Bonehead's Myspace attracted 1000 + friends within the first hour of going 'live'.

LA based Glaswegian Pete has caught the attention of Q Magazine, Alan McGee and radio playlisters on both sides of the Atlantic. Voted one of the top 50 downloads by Q, and with a heavily downloaded album 'This Is Modern Soul'.
Pete's vision has been clear from the start, to create an album that has "great songs with a big sound to back it up".

Now touring the UK for the first time with Oasis' founder member Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs, fans will get a chance to hear the songs live, and also see the much-missed Oasis guitarist playing live again.

One-time wild boys Oasis went home to their loved ones after their opening night in Scotland.

The Gallagher brothers snubbed the Northern Lights of Aberdeen after Saturday's gig despite having to be back for last night's second show.

Manchester boys Noel and Liam had a private plane waiting at the city's airport to whisk them home to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon with their families.

Within minutes of their barnstorming performance at Aberdeen's Exhibition and Conference Centre ending the pair were chauffeurdriven to the airport and were heading back south.

The rest of the band and road crew stayed behind and enjoyed a few beers at a plush hotel near Aberdeen.

A source told the Razz: "Noel and Liam can still party with the best of them, but they don't see the point of staying in hotels when they can be home in a couple of hours.

"Noel and Liam wanted to go home and it isn't a problem to fly back when they're not due on stage until 9pm the next night."

The brothers more than earned their Sunday at home after another sell-out set in the Granite City.

Oasis had the Aberdeen crowd going from the off with hits such as Morning Glory, The Importance Of Being Idle and Wonderwall.

The band are back on top with a great new album and a back catalogue fit to blow their contemporaries away.

They play Glasgow's SECC tomorrow and Wednesday.

Arright. What to say? Not a lot happening at the minute. The boys are on their way to Aberdeen. I'm on my way to Dublin. Got some interviews to attend to. Which pretty much amounts to being asked some very heavily loaded questions about U2/Bono. We've all been in Belfast the last couple of days. Somewhat predictably the gigs were great.

I went to see that Giant's Causeway thing and I can report that it's still there!

Can't believe that non-story involving Russell and Jonathan is STILL rumbling on. How is it that a talented handsome devil loses his job because of The Daily Mail and a “Satanic Slut” gets rich because of The Tabloids? That's the English and its media for you, I suppose.

And yes, my bags did eventually turn up.

Noel Gallagher refuses to listen to his own albums.

The Oasis guitarist dislikes the band's third and fourth LPs, 'Be Here Now' and 'Standing On The Shoulder of Giants' and wishes the group had taken a break from music during the time they were recorded.

He admitted: "I see the middle two albums, 'Be Here Now' and 'Standing On The Shoulder of Giants', as lacking - for me anyway - in any kind of joy or spirit.

"It was like making records for the sake of it. I look back on that time and think we should have just had a break and done a bit of living, enjoyed the success that we had. But we didn't. We just kept going. I don't listen to those albums."

The rocker believes it is only with their current album, seventh studio effort 'Dig Out Your Soul', that the band have achieved what they set out to.

He added to Britain's GQ magazine: "I really liked our fifth, 'Heathen Chemistry', but I thought it was only a third of the way to the place we wanted to be with this band then 'Don't Believe The Truth' got us half way.

"'Dig Out Your Soul' got us to the place where we all feel comfortable with where we're at. There is no need to write pop songs for the sake of it. We just write what we like and do what we do."

Noel Gallagher Recruits Sergeant For Glasgow Tour Gigs

Sergeant are preparing for the biggest gigs of their lives after Noel Gallagher demanded they support Oasis at the SECC on Tuesday and Wednesday.

Gallagher is a fan of the Fife outfit and gave his manager their CD, insisting: "Get me this band."

Sergeant singer Nick Mercer said: "We are so excited, totally buzzing.

We are massive fans of Oasis.

"The fact Noel asked specifically for us means he wants us for the music. To be pinpointed by Noel is amazing. We feel brilliant knowing he listens to our CD and is buzzing off it the way we buzz off his tunes."

Nick hopes the Gallaghers will watch his band's performances because the pressure will bring out the best in them.

He said: "We are at our best under pressure. We are on a roll right now and we will nail it, especially if they are standing at the side of the stage. We want to impress them.

"I don't want to sound arrogant but we always knew Noel would like our songs, like a lot of other people like him do.

"The music we make is not reinventing the wheel, we do what people like Oasis do by taking bits from classic bands and reinterpreting them our way. We are influenced by the same bands as Noel so we expected him to like what we do.

"It's still great to know we were right and I would love this to lead to more stuff with Oasis, whether it's support slots or Christmas dinner...I'm up for anything."

The band again were on top form, the best crowd I have been in this tour.

There was another breach of security last night, a man jumped up on the stage at the end of last nights show, he then jumped down and straight into the hands of the security team right in front of the stage he was then dragged away.

I did not see everything that happened on stage, but Liam appeared ready to want to want to have a fight with the person and was livid.

Participants in the BBC Electric Proms are, states the festival’s website, “challenged to come up with new and original material or arrangements of their music to reflect the central theme of the festival, creating new moments in music”. To judge by this closing concert of the Proms’ third annual season, somebody forgot to tell Oasis — or, more likely, they simply ignored the advice. With a 20-song set that matched almost exactly the one they are currently touring British arenas with, the band paid lip service to the Proms’ ethos by being joined on stage by the 50-strong Crouch End Festival Chorus. That the singers were used on only six songs, and even then were, for the most part, inaudible, gives you some idea just how half-cocked the evening was. (A similar problem occurred during the Streets’ show earlier in the week, when the Heritage Orchestra got slightly lost in the mix.) And a surly and visibly wired Liam Gallagher, majestic when staring down a stadium crowd but risible glaring out, shades fixed to his face, and apparently balding, in such an intimate space, seemed unwilling to acknowledge the choir’s presence — bar a cursory “nice one” at the very end.

It was, as it so often is, left to Noel to inject some humour and passion into the proceedings. Addressing Daniel Craig in the gallery, he muttered: “I might see if I can blag it so that he can get me the next James Bond theme tune instead of f***ing dopey Americans doing it all the time.” He then took a pop at the insufferable Russell Brand, also present, which led some to heckle the comedian with mocking cries of “Who are you?”. Later, after Liam had remembered to introduce the band’s new man behind the kit (Chris Sharrock), saying, “Oh, by the way, that’s our new drummer,” Noel quipped, “Or as we call him, ‘number 32’.” And, backed by the choir on The Masterplan and a sublime Don’t Look Back in Anger, he exuded a commitment and vocal warmth almost totally absent from the performance of his brother.

The six songs included from their only mildly diverting new album, Dig out Your Soul, reinforced the sense that Oasis these days trade chiefly in former glories. Their performance of Shock of the Lightning might have exuded some of the old menace, but it’s still not a patch on Champagne Supernova or Cigarettes and Alcohol, incendiary here, and both moments where the packed crowd joined in with full-throated fervour.

So surplus to requirements did the poor choir seem that the show was better viewed as an opportunity to see one of the biggest live bands in the world in an unusually small setting. And, on that basis, there were thrilling moments, where the realisation that this was possibly a never-to-be-repeated experience seemed to dawn on the audience as one — nowhere more so than during the encore, when the imperishable Champagne Supernova was followed by the band’s traditional set-closer, I Am the Walrus. On the latter, the choir finally came into its own, attacking the “ho-ho-ho, hee-hee-hee, ha-ha-ha” backing vocals with gusto. At last, they could be heard. A rousing finale, then. But of “new and original material or arrangements” there was none.

That Roundhouse gig was fuckin' far out. Those were there will tell you. James Bond! He was there. As was Russell Brand. Who incidentally has caused what seemingly has turned into a major shit storm. A sad sign of the times, I'm afraid. We live in a country where fat ugly columnists can somehow dictate to the rest of us what we should and shouldn't think. Who gives a shit anyway? Me? You? Max Clifford? And as for the 10,000 people who it took 5 days to be offended??......... go back to your coffee morning crosswords and fade to grey. Anyway, ask him he was there.

Just landed in Belfast. Pissing down. Still a bit fucked from Sunday. Gotta stop this drinking until breakfast malarky. Right I'm off.

Take That And Oasis Lead Music Ticket Boom

Big name bands like Take That and Oasis are leading a boom in gig ticket sales, with UK stadium shows selling in record time despite the credit crunch.

Take That are expected to sell 700,000 tickets on Friday for their 2009 tour, a week after 500,000 tickets to see Oasis were snapped up in six hours.

AC/DC, Metallica and The Killers have also sold out UK shows in recent weeks.

But while massive stars thrive, there are fears that a recession could hit tours by small and middle-ranking acts.

Take That's promoters SJM said the pop band's tour was the fastest-selling in UK history.

"It's totally unprecedented," SJM managing director Simon Moran told BBC News.

"In times of economic downturn, to sell £35m of tickets in one day for a tour is good for the economy, I would have thought," he said.

Tickets for their 14 stadium shows - including four nights at Wembley Stadium - cost between £45 and £65 each. By 1530 GMT, only five of the dates had tickets left.

According to SJM, the record of fastest-selling tour was only broken a week ago by Oasis, another of their bands.

"Both artists are just very popular and careful with the ticket price," Mr Moran said.

"Not all live music is doing good. But if it's the right artist and the right ticket price and the right event, people want to be entertained.

"But there's plenty of what we're doing that's not doing that good, I can tell you."

Meanwhile, virtually all dates on UK arena tours by Metallica and The Killers are now sold out.

AC/DC sold 60,000 tickets in 40 minutes two weeks ago, while Depeche Mode sold out the O2 Arena in London in half an hour.

Stuart Galbraith, who runs promotion company Kilimanjaro Live, said: "If you're AC/DC, Take That, Oasis or Metallica then it's very, very good."
