Liam And Noel Gallagher's Cousin Wins Manchester Irish Music Competition

A cousin of Oasis brothers Noel and Liam Gallagher has won a singing competition in Europe's largest Irish festival in Manchester.

Rebecca Sweeney, 21, from Levenshulme, won the Irish X Factor competition staged at the Gallaghers' former local pub, The Farmer's Arms in Burnage.

The barmaid said she hoped her success would encourage cousin Liam to sing with her at next year's festival.

Liam's band 'Beady Eye' played during the first week of the 16-day festival.

'New York'

Ms Sweeney gave her winning performance in the Oasis Lounge of the pub, to which the stars have donated memorabilia.

She said: "It is great to be part of the Irish Festival.

"Liam brought his new band 'Beady Eye' to the Manchester Apollo during the opening weekend of the festival and hopefully he might get me up on stage next year.

"I had a great time, all the singers were fantastic and any one of them could have won it."

The Manchester Irish Festival which was launched by Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given, will have staged more than 200 events in 56 venues and attracted more than 25,000 visitors by the time it finishes on Sunday.

Organiser Tony Hennigan said: "Even New York's Irish festival isn't as big as Manchester's in terms of events and duration. It might have a bigger parade, but in Manchester we still had 100,000 for our St Patrick's day parade and it just grows every year."

The Vaccines: 'Liam Gallagher Calling Us Boring Was A Good Thing'

Justin Young is happy just to be on the ex-Oasis man's 'radar'

The Vaccines have said that they are perfectly happy with Liam Gallagher calling them "boring".

The Beady Eye man told NME that he thought the four-piece were dull in December.

"I've got my eye on you," he said of the band. "But I'm gonna train it somewhere else now because you're fucking boring me."

Asked by The Sun about the quip, The Vaccines guitarist Freddie Cowan said: "It was a good thing. If Liam says you’re a good band then you’re as good as dead."

Frontman Justin Young added: "I grew up listening to Oasis, they were my favourite band when I was a teenager. So I was happy just to be on his radar."

The Vaccines' debut album 'What Did You Expect From The Vaccines?' was the official midweek album chart Number Two on Wednesday (March 16).

Upside Down: The Story Of Creation Records - Review

Despite the absence of several notable characters, this documentary gives an interesting glimpse into the history of Creation Records

There's one great stroke of genius to Upside Down, Danny O'Connor's chronicle of the birth, glory years and demise of mouthy mogul Alan McGee's iconic record label. It's the lack of a voiceover: O'Connor eschews traditional narration in favour of nuggets of rock'n'roll wisdom, spoken by ageing Irish DJ, music guru and McGee's Death Disco co-conspirator BP Fallon ("purple-browed beep" in T Rex's Telegram Sam). Fallon is shot in monochrome and beamed onto a grainy 50s TV set – a move that ensures the film stays in tune with the vibe of the bands Creation championed: amongst others Primal Scream, My Bloody Valentine, The Pastels, The Jazz Butcher, Felt, Ride, Super Furry Animals, and most lucratively, Oasis.

The main players tell the story themselves in interviews spliced with archive footage from throughout Creation's 20-odd year history. There are some noticeable absentees - Lawrence from Felt, producer Andrew Weatherall, the Jesus and Mary Chain's William Reid and Liam Gallagher – and almost no points of contention between any of the talking heads.

At the end of the US premiere at SXSW, O'Connor explained the difficulties involved in getting all parties involved to appear – Jim Reid agrees, William Reid declines as a result, and so on. Lawrence (surely the biggest loss) was apparently very ill for much of the shoot. It's clear O'Connor takes his subject matter pretty seriously, and, as a result, this is a much straighter take on a label than that offered on Factory, Creation's contemporaries, by Michael Winterbottom's 24 Hour Party People.

For those already familiar with the story, there's little new to learn, but there are enough fresh interviews, plus plenty of airtime given to some of the lesser-known players (unsung hero Dick Green especially), to keep Upside Down interesting.

Obviously, the Creation back catalogue provides the soundtrack, including the Jesus and Mary Chain single from which O'Connor takes his title. It was the band's debut, the label's 12th release, and the one which really launched it; whose messy, exhilarating sound somehow sums up what Creation was all about. Upside Down indeed.

Liam Gallagher Tells Wishaw Oasis Fan: Be Here Now

A Diehard Oasis fan from Craigneuk realised The Importance of Being Idle after he queued for three hours to meet his hero Liam Gallagher and was rewarded with a one-on-one conversation at the rock idol’s Glasgow hotel.

Some Might Say that 32-year-old Frankie McComville’s dream of meeting the singer was still Half The World Away after a lengthy wait to meet Gallagher appeared to have ended in failure.

Frankie was queuing outside Gallagher’s new Pretty Green clothing boutique in Glasgow when it was officially opened by the Britpop icon but was left asking What’s The Story (Morning Glory)? as security staff were only letting official fan club members in to meet Liam.

Knowing that he’s hardly going to Live Forever, Frankie was left irate by the decision to deny him the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to meet the Oasis and Beady Eye frontman, so he got back in touch with the shop to Go Let It Out and tell them exactly what he thought.

Frankie said: “I was the first one in the queue early in the morning but as I was waiting another queue started forming with people who had been emailed to go in for a meet-and-greet but I never knew anything about that.

“Loads of people then joined my queue who hadn’t been emailed like me, with none of us getting in, so I rolled down to Pretty Green later and complained all about it, telling the guy what I was wearing that day and he said he remembered me waiting for three hours.

“He told me he was very sorry but it was the police who’d put the block on people. So he told me that when Liam came up last week to play the Barrowlands he’d definitely get him to meet me.”

Fortunately for Frankie, it wasn’t a case of Definitely Maybe.

“I was always going to the concert on Thursday so went along and I hadn’t heard anything so just thought it had all fallen through,” he said.

“Then on Friday the guy phoned me and asked me to go to the hotel on the outskirts of Glasgow where Liam was staying.

“I got there for 7.30 and sure enough the guy from Pretty Green was there. Then Liam came down the stairs and was just brand new with us.

“He stood speaking to us for 20 minutes. He was absolutely brilliant.

“He asked me if I liked the new Beady Eye stuff and I told him I’ve got the album and can’t stop listening to it.

“I then asked him about a lot of the Oasis stuff and talked to him about the clothing range at Pretty Green. I also asked why he chose Glasgow to start with over Manchester and he said it just had to be Glasgow – it’s like a second home to him and he prefers it to Manchester.

“He then signed my Definitely Maybe and Beady Eye CDs and put me onto the guest list for Beady Eye on the Friday night too!”

At Friday’s concert, Frankie was treated to the VIP experience, sitting in Glasgow’s famous live music venue beside top comedian Kevin Bridges.

“The gig was unbelievable. Beady Eye sounded brilliant,” said Frankie.

“It took me 16 years to meet Liam. I’ve been into Oasis since they started and always wanted to meet him. I couldn’t believe how relaxed he was and I was taken aback by how happy he was to speak to me for such a long time.

“It was a dream come true and he couldn’t have been nicer.”
