Fan Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In Brussels

"You're quite lively for a Belgian crowd aren't you?"

Due to me leaving too late in a combination with a lot of traffic jams, I totally missed the opening act and only arrived about 10 minutes before the High Flying Birds were ready to take off! Nevertheless, using our female forces, we managed to wrestle ourselves halfway through the venue, to a good spot about in the middle with, most importantly, a good view on our Noel.

When the AA remix of IIHAG started, a few people were singing along already, so it promised to be a good gig!

Opening with It's Good To Be Free, followed by Mucky Fingers, as usual. It left a lot of people in doubt though: 'Was that an Oasis song? It's not on the album! Is it a new song?' Pretty funny, although I still think he should open with something else!

Then Everybody's On The Run. A lot of people singing along! And even in Dream on, people were shouting along through the whole venue! You could already see on Noel's face that he was quite surprised about the reception he was getting!

If I Had A Gun started of amazing. A lot of people singing along again! This could really be the new 'Wonderwall' if he would play it acoustically!

In between songs Noel mentioned that we were "quite lively for a Belgian crowd" and that he "played here with Oasis before, but it never was like this". He seemed genuinely impressed with us, which only made us even louder of course!

The Good Rebel was better live, but I still find the song a bit bland. Not many people knew what it was either, and the people next to me were trying to assure me the song was called 'Black Rain'

The Death of You And Me, being a single, of course got a great reception. Not many people singing along though. Then Freaky Teeth! What a tune that is! People were jelling the title before he started and his reply was “I’m going to play it, but not because you asked it. I was going to play it anyway, so shut up.”

Then the acoustic bit. Wonderwall was amazing! A lot of confused people in the beginning, since it was the Ryan Adams version of couse, but after the first few lines they were over it and singing their hearts out! Same for Supersonic! One of the best Supersonics as of yet in my opinion! Great quality video here BTW!

A lot of of people singing along with Record Machine as well, which surprised me again! It seemed like the whole venue had listed to the album a million times before coming to the gig!

What A Life wasn't nearly as good as on the record, and the first time that Noels voice didn't hold up very well (in the high parts). It has been a single but hasn't been played much over here, so it was about the first song (bar the two opening songs) that didn't get great reaction. It stayed that way for Talk Tonight and Soldier Boys And Jesus Freaks.

The banter was again Noel picking on some people on the first rows. “Come to Columbia? Why? You’re here, I’m here, fuck the rest of them!” and “You want a picture? With me? No”

The next song was announced as "This is a song for all the ladies". Broken Arrow! A favourite of mine! Then Half the World Away, a lot of singing (or shouting) along again!

Closing the set was of course Stranded On The Wrong Beach. Starts of very psychedelic. Love it! Most of the people didn't really seem to know it though, but it was a good closer!

Then the encore. Needles to say that was amazing! Little By Little blew the roof off! Importance of being Idle, was never the biggest fan of this song, but it was good! And then, Don't Look Back In Anger'! The whole venue had it's hands in their air and was singing their lungs out! Amazing! Noel stepped back during the chorus and watched us singing our hearts out with a big smile appearing on his face (1.50)! You could clearly see he enjoyed it as well!

What a gig! You could clearly see the whole band enjoyed it very much! The bass player looked pretty stoned by the way and had this stupid smile on his face for pretty much the whole gig! Also, the guitarist got boo'ed again after introducing him as being from the USA

Also remember him looking and smiling at Noel at some point when we were all singing along. Great gig!

Liam Gallagher Transfixes Seattle With His Beady Eye

British rock musicians have always had a love-hate relationship with the media, and there’s no one the critics love to hate quite as much as Liam Gallagher. As frontman for Oasis he has already secured his place in the pantheons of rock history, but there remains a question mark over Liam’s every move, as if he’s still that bratty young pretender who burst onto the scene in the early Nineties. I guess when you have serious, restrained songwriter Noel Gallagher as your older brother you’re always destined to be cast as the clown.

Last night, Friday November 30, offered Liam a chance to rewrite his image, at least as far as Seattle was concerned, when he took to the stage at the Showbox at the Market with new band Beady Eye. They may have a new name, but Beady Eye are plainly Oasis in another guise – only elder statesman Noel Gallagher jumped ship, to start his new project the ‘High Flying Birds’. When your songwriter and driving force has moved on to pastures new, though, you definitely have something to prove.

Before Beady Eye brought their British rock’n'roll to the home of grunge, the Showbox was treated to Belgium’s Black Box Revelation. BBR have a strong following in Europe, and if their short-but-loud warm-up slot was any indication, then they should kick up a storm on American shores too.

Despite being a two-man band BBR make an incredible amount of noise, guitarist/singer Jan Paternoster contributing most of it while Dries Van Dijck thrashes out some impressive rhythms on the drums. If you haven’t heard them, you may want to check out their Shiver of Joy EP – a combination of Oasis-like rock attitude, squealing blues guitars, and more than a few pop tunes swimming beneath the feedback.

As good as BBR were, however, there was little doubt about the main attraction. The crowd seemed to swell in the minutes before Liam Gallagher swaggered onto the stage, as the testosterone-heavy mass of bodies pushed forward to be closer to their hero. He certainly had a lot to live up to.

Perhaps it shouldn’t come as a surprise that the Liam Gallagher we experienced at the Showbox sometimes felt like a shadow of his former vitriolic self. He still has that swagger – and the parka jacket – but Liam is approaching 40 now, and even he looked as if he was struggling to summon enthusiasm for his carefully-crafted, arrogant, opinionated stage persona. The only time he showed a slight flare of his former temper was over an ongoing problem with the vocal mix, and even then he played the part of the frustrated perfectionist rather than the petulant rock’n'roller. Maybe time really can tame the monsters of rock.

As for the songs, while they didn’t quite scale the heights of Oasis at their peak, they still packed plenty of punch for a band that only has one album to its name. ‘Millionaire’, ‘The Roller’ and ‘Kill For A Dream’ offered obvious highlights, but with those blown early in the show Beady Eye struggled to deliver a true crescendo at the evening’s close – although that didn’t keep them from trying. In particular a piano-driven ten minutes of Fifties-style rock suggested a potential new direction for the Oasis stalwarts, one that hasn’t already been subsumed by Noel’s influence. Clearly they’ve been taking lessons from fellow Brits The Jim Jones Revue.

Despite their pedigree, seeing Beady Eye still isn’t quite as satisfying as enjoying Oasis in their prime – but then few things are. As Liam wore his sweat-sodden parka like a badge of his rockstar prowess, you couldn’t help feeling that he’s still a long way from reaching his final act. And any band that pairs a Gallagher with Ride virtuoso Andy Bell, as well as Paul Weller collaborator Gem Archer, will always be worth your hard-earned dollars.

So... Amsterdam? (Or as it's known to many, "The 'Dam".)

It was pretty fuckin' grim, to be honest. Cold, wet and windy.

We was playing a gaff called the Melkweg, or as it's known to us users of the Queen's, "The Milky Way". Which is ironic because the first time I ever visited The 'Dam was in the '80s when I was working for that band the Inspiral Carpets? Google them.

Anyway, we played the very same venue.

I have one vivid memory of being out of my fuckin' mind on some crazy weed trying (in vain) to set up the drummer's drum kit. Think it took me about 3 hours, which these things tend to do when you're stoned. And when the drummer arrived he duly informed me the fuckin' thing was, in fact, upside down and back to front!

Good gig though. It was a very relaxed affair. Had a good laugh with some people in the crowd. Top night all round.

The big news at the moment though is that Man City and Liverpool have been drawn together in the semi-final of the Carling Cup. I'm hoping the betting gets a bit more interesting this time… y'know… a doughnut and a glass of milk? An ice cream, maybe? Maybe some actual money will change hands this time!!!

You currently find me in the European hotspot for all things beige… BRUSSELS. (Yaaaawn).

In a bit.

GD.

Liam Gallagher Talks Beady Eye, Oasis, And More

Liam Gallagher: It takes Balls To Go Onstage and Not Play Oasis Songs

Oasis has been a rock radio staple since the mid-'90s. But the band came apart in 2009 when, after years of infighting, Noel Gallagher left the outfit. His brother Liam and the rest of the group have since soldiered on under the name Beady Eye.

With the release of their debut, Different Gear, Still Speeding, at the beginning of the year, Beady Eye showed they aren't trying to replicate their former sound; indeed, the quartet's new brand of stripped-down rock is looser and more ambitious than anything Oasis put out.

Ahead of Beady Eye's show this Saturday, Dec. 3 at the Wiltern, we spoke with Liam by phone. Topics discussed included Noel, Noel and, oh yeah, we talked about Noel, too. (The pair remains enmeshed in legal disputes: Noel has accused Liam of attacking him with a guitar, while Liam has sued Noel for libel.)

Since Noel left the band, it seems like there's been a lot more harmony between the four of you. Has this been reflected in the band's live shows?
I'd say so. All I think about when I go onstage is putting my head down and getting on with the music. I don't try to think about any of the other nonsense. The gaps are short between each song -- that's the big difference. Noel used to tune up for nine hours and kill the vibe as far as I'm concerned. But now we don't tune and get straight into it and it's very good, like proper geezers.

Why did you guys choose to play smaller venues?
We've only got one album and we're a new band still. The big thing is we're not playing Oasis songs. If we were, the venues would probably be a little bit bigger. But no one there [in the United States] has heard our music yet.

Do you find it difficult to go before a crowd that may have come for Oasis and play only Beady Eye songs?
It takes balls to go onstage and not play Oasis songs. I don't miss those songs yet, but we're definitely going to play them on the next tour. We just wanted to get this album out and let people know who we are and that we're [just fine] without Noel Gallagher. As long as you don't let nostalgia take over, we'll definitely keep our eyes on the future. So instead of playing 10 Oasis songs, we'll play two or three.

In recent interviews, Noel is saying he's going to be playing 70 percent new material, and 30 percent Oasis songs ...
I'll tell you what: He's playing 50 percent Oasis material, which says to me that he's a complete fucking parasite. He's a complete fucking shitbag.

Do you think he's jealous that the four of you stayed together and are continuing on without him?
I'm sure he's not, because Noel's ego is way too big for that. He's surrounded by a lot of ass-lickers who tell him he's great every fucking minute.

Have you found the writing and recording process to be more democratic without your brother?
With the Oasis stuff, I'd have to wait until the end of the session to record. It was pretty fucking boring and frustrating. When I'd come in and do the songs, there would be no one there except me and the fucking producer. Now, I can get the vocals down with the guitars and everyone else there, so it's really cool.

There have been reports that you would consider going on tour as Oasis with Noel for a 20th-anniversary tour playing (What's the Story) Morning Glory? in its entirety. Is there any truth to that?
I'd do it for the right reasons. If the fans want to hear it, then I'd do it. I'm not doing it for the money, and that's not me being big-headed. I'd do it for the fans and I'd do it for the album, but that's basically it. That's not me saying I'd want to getback in a band with Noel -- I'd rather eat my own shit than be in a band with him again. He's a miserable little fuck, if you know what I mean. But if the fans want it, though, I'd do it.

In a recent interview, you said New York is your favorite city here in the United States. Why isn't L.A. No. 1?
It's nothing against L.A., but New York is what does it for me. I've had some nice times in L.A. and shit times in other places, too.

Oasis' infamous 1994 gig at the Whisky allegedly was fueled by heavy drug use. How do you think your first show in L.A. with Beady Eye will compare?
I honestly can't remember that one. A lot of shit gets talked about that concert, but I really don't remember. I can say this much, Beady Eye is ripping it at the moment, and we're ready to play Los Angeles again.

Is it true that some of the material on the Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds album, like "Stop the Clocks" and "(I Wanna Live in a Dream in My) Record Machine," were once intended to be Oasis songs?
Well, that's what I thought, too. But you have to ask Noel Gallagher, he's obviously got a master plan. But we don't care about that or him now. We're Beady Eye; we're loud and proud.

Liam Gallagher On Beady Eye And More

His estranged brother, Noel Gallagher, recently breezed through San Francisco with his new post-Oasis outfit High Flying Birds. Now, it’s Liam Gallagher’s turn, as the irascible Mancunian debuts his own combo Beady Eye, featuring his ex-Oasis cohorts Andy Bell, Gem Archer and Chris Sharrock (a 2009 backstage fight split the siblings — and the band — and the Gallaghers haven’t conversed since). But Liam is chugging full-speed ahead. Beady Eye already has enough material written for a follow-up to its chiming, decidedly John Lennon-ish debut, “Different Gear, Still Speeding.” He also runs a popular clothing company called Pretty Green.

Why the name Beady Eye, Liam? Well, we tried a few names, but they’d all been taken. We thought about Monkey Eyes, Cat’s Eyes. But I don’t know — you’ve got to call yourself something, right? And that was the one that everyone was buzzing about. It means being aware of things. Keeping an eye on things, and not letting things get out of your hands.

You’re in a “different gear,” you say. Have you actually slowed down, gotten more spiritual? A little bit. But not musically, though. Musically, we’re on fire, man. Musically, we’re picking up the pace and we’re f------ buzzing, man! But as a person? Yeah, I’ve slowed down a little bit, but not too much. But you’ve got to take whatever’s in front of you and you’ve got to go for it, haven’t you? You’ve just got to do what you’ve got to do. We certainly didn’t plan it — this is what happened: Oasis split up. And I think there could have been more Oasis records, but it wasn’t meant to be.

Why carry on as a group instead of going solo? Well, if anything, I couldn’t have done a solo record — it’s not in my nature. And I can’t even f------ play an instrument. I’m not a solo guy, so I wouldn’t do it even if I could. I need to be in a band. I need a bevy of people around, do you know what I mean? I enjoy being in a band.

You haven’t talked to your brother since the fight? Nah. I haven’t spoken to him. We’ve got nothing to say to each other.

Beady Eye has a song called “Beatles and Stones.” Why do you have to pick one over the other? That’s why it’s called “Beatles and Stones”! I wrote it, but it’s more about wanting to stand the test of time, with anything that you put down. I want our music to still sound great in 20 or 30 years’ time.

Video: Manchester City's Joe Hart Sings Oasis' Wonderwall At Manchester City's Training Ground

Manchester City's Joe Hart has been filmed belting out Oasis' Wonderwall during a City training session, and complemented (or attempted to mask!) his off-key tones by mimicking Liam Gallagher’s famous swagger.

A generous City TV cameraman encouraged the chipper 24-year-old with calls of: ‘It’s good, it’s good!’
‘You should be on X-Factor.’
