The A-Z On My Love For Oasis

The NME recently posted an article where they attempted to rank every Oasis song. It was a worthy attempt but ultimately short of the mark because they missed a few tracks and some others they brushed over with one word answers. Come on NME! If you are going to go to all that trouble then go the extra mile and do it properly!

I thought I would give it a go myself - however the ranking aspect turned out to be impossible. How can you compare Take Me Away to Turn Up the Sun? Or Up In The Sky to Underneath The Sky? For a band that get unfairly ridiculed as having a limited range of styles and influences investigating their body of work tells a very different story.

So while I won’t be ranking them I will be going through them, one by one, in alphabetical order, giving my thoughts and feelings on them.

Over the last twenty five years their music has played a significant part to the soundtrack of my life. I waited with huge anticipation for the singles, albums, TV and radio appearances, tour dates, videos, DVD’s and more to be released.

I will never forget the excitement of walking into a little venue in North Wales with my friend and watching the band for the first time a few days after ‘Definitely Maybe’ was released.

But most importantly to me they had the power to bring people together and move them with their music. I am proud to have seen every single line-up of the band and I loved seeing the different facets each different line up brought to the look and sound of the band.

What I think is absolutely fantastic is the amount of young people discovering the band, driven primarily I believe through streaming services and the release of 'Supersonic' and the impact Liam and Noel's solo careers have had over the last couple of years.

This vast and extensive back catalogue will live forever not just in the memory of those of us lucky enough to live through it, but also it will remain their to be discovered for future generations to come long after we are gone.

I’m not a music journalist so I don’t know how to write about the construction of a song or how “the middle eight totally ruined the fluidness” of a particular track. Plus I am not here to be negative and pull things apart. Therefore if you are looking for a scathing destruction of tracks you think deserve a critical kicking then this post may not be for you.

What I am is a fan who has run this site for nearly the last fifteen years, and I want to celebrate the incredible music by going track by track so nothing is left out. This comes from a place of pure love for a band I absolutely fucking adore. Who came from a council estate in Manchester with a bunch of second hand guitars and grabbed the music scene in Britain by the bollocks and said “We Are Oasis”.

This post was inspired by one of my favourite features on one of my favourite podcasts - the Oasis Podcast. Over there on a regular basis the host James will do a full breakdown of a track, also working through A-Z, often ably abetted by talented contributors who dig into the songs and break them down, musically and lyrically. I am not qualified to approach them in that similar technical way - I will be focusing on what they mean to me, and some of the memories attached to them.

So a huge heartfelt thank you in no particular order to Liam Gallagher, Noel Gallagher, Bonehead, Guigsy, Tony McCarroll, Alan White, Gem Archer, Andy Bell, Zak Starkey, Chris Sharrock, Mike Rowe, Terry Kirkbride, Jay Darlington, Matt Deighton, Scott McLeod, the man who played the harmonica during those great concerts in 1996 (Mark Feltham).

And finally the dude who opened up the phone box on the ‘Be Here Now’ tour.

Acquiesce
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the 'Some Might Say' single.

I remember hearing this at the time of its release and thinking “if this is a B-side what's the new album going to be like?”. The one song I always listen to as loud as I possibly can, the lyrics and most of all the vocals from both Liam and Noel are on another level.

For me this was always one of the songs I loved hearing when it was played live, as it never failed to get everyone up and singing. I'd pay any amount of money the band wanted for a ticket to see them both singing this absolute anthem side by side in front of an audience together again.

Ain't Got Nothin
Written by Liam Gallagher
Dig Out Your Soul

I first heard this song when the demo for it leaked ahead of its official release, one of those short, heavy, “in your face” tracks that Liam likes to write. I've always preferred this song live compared to the album version as it turns the song into a completely different animal.

Below is a video of the band playing the track at Wembley Arena on October 16th 2008.

Alice
Written by Liam Gallagher & Paul Arthurs
Unreleased demo

This was recorded at the Out Of The Blues Studios in Manchester in 1991. The lyrics were written by Liam and Bonehead wrote the music.

Tony McCarroll was a plasterer by trade and agreed to do some much needed work with Bonehead and Guigsy on the walls in the studio in exchange for some studio time.

What I really like about these and all the other demos is that they offer an early look at how the band sounded. It’s a decent song that deserves its place in the history books and on this list.

Listen to the track below.

Alive
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Shakermaker single

I remember buying the single at the time of it's release and this was sandwiched between 'D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman?' and a superb live version of 'Bring It On Down'.

What I really like about this is the rawness to the recording of the track, not one of the more critically acclaimed B-sides from the back catalogue but one I appreciate. It was played to death in my stereo and walkman ahead of the release of 'Definitely Maybe'.

Listen to the track below.

All Around The World
Written by Noel Gallagher
Be Here Now
Released as a single and has spent 11 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

One of the highlights from 'Be Here Now' for me. I personally don’t buy into the criticisms that it goes on too long, repeats itself and is boring. What I didn't know at the time was that the song was originally written and rehearsed when the band were just starting up. Noel always insisted that the track wouldn't be recorded until they could afford an orchestra to accompany it.

The song is exquisite with a big over the top chorus, huge orchestral segments, amazing vocals and layers upon layers of guitars. It's just a fun song much like the other tracks on the album.

All Around The World (Reprise)

Be Here Now

I really like this little orchestral track, it reminds me of the titles that run at the end of a film. It's a fitting end to an absolutely over the top yet brilliant album.

Angel Child
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the 'D'You Know What I Mean?' single

Just give Noel an acoustic guitar and tracks like this beautiful song just seem to appear out of nowhere. This is one of those songs that I wish Noel would play live with his High Flying Birds.

It was only ever played live once by Noel during his time in Oasis to my knowledge - on a radio station in Madrid, Spain in July 1997.

It was played in 2012 in aid of War Child for Xfm Legends in London.

Listen to the performance on Madrid radio below.

Arkayla
Written by Noel Gallagher
Unreleased Demo

What I really like about this demo is the guitar work and general sound on this track, it’s also known as 'I Will Show You'. On a cassette the band handed out in 1992 it was listed as 'Arkayla'.

The track appeared in Noel's 1993 notebook that surfaced a few years ago and in that the song was titled  'R.K. La'.

(As Long As They've Got) Cigarettes In Hell
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the 'Go Let It Out' single

I've always really liked the style of the songs written by Noel around this time period. It shows a more intimate and sensitive side to his writing. I'd seen occasional flashes of it with past releases but around this time in the bands history it was much more predominant.

Listen to the track below.

Bag It Up
Written by Noel Gallagher
Dig Out Your Soul

This should have been a single and more importantly why was this never played live?

I remember hearing this for the first time and thinking “WOW! This is amazing - it's going to sound fucking brilliant live”. What a simply superb way to start an album. It's best quality is arguably it's greater reliance on Noel and Liam's vocals which are a collective force on this track and countless others on the list.

Be Here Now
Written by Noel Gallagher
Be Here Now

Whenever I hear this song in my head I can hear my mother screaming up the stairs to me "turn down the music it's making the house shake". To be honest I'm surprised my mother never had letters from the council complaining about my stereo after 'Be Here Now' was released. I think secretly our neighbours were Oasis fans as they never complained. If they weren't they certainly were by the time I moved out of home.

This is just another one of those songs I've got to listen to loud, everything is turned up to maximum volume on it. Absolutely no fucks given in the studio with this. It's the one track that I always rocked out with my air guitar in my bedroom. For me personally it was always one of the highlights in the live set whenever it was played live.

What's not to love about this song…?!? ALL TOGETHER NOW!

C'mon, c'mon, c'mon, c'mon,
C'mon, c'mon, c'mon
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah
Yeah, yeah, yeah

A Bell Will Ring
Written by Gem Archer
Don't Believe The Truth

I really like this song a number of critics absolutely panned it at the time of its release, it always sounded great when it was played live. What I really like about it is that the lyrics are so optimistic.

"The sun will shine on you again, a bell will ring inside your head and all will be brand new".

I've never listened to what critics or others like, I've always used my ears to decide what music I like and they liked this song.

Better Let You Know
Written by Noel Gallagher
Unreleased Demo

This is a sort of cover of an old house track by Cartouche called ‘Feel The Groove’ that was released in 1990.

I’m not sure how many times it was played by the band in the early days, but the guitar work at the end of the track is exceptional.

Noel Gallagher spoke briefly about the song to the July 1995 issue of Q Magazine when he talked about his first ever Oasis gig. “There was about 20 people there and we did four songs [including] a cover of a house tune that I can’t remember the name of and went on for about 20 minutes.”

Definitely worth checking out.

Listen to Oasis' version below and then the original from Cartouche.

Better Man
Written by Liam Gallagher
Heathen Chemistry

After his first published attempt of songwriting appeared on the 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' album what I was really looking forward to was listening to the songs Liam had written for 'Heathen Chemistry'. This song is often overlooked by many people as both 'Songbird' and 'Born On A Different Cloud' are both two absolutely superb songs.

What I really like about this song is that the lyrics are like a promise to himself.

I wanna love you
I wanna be a better man
I don't wanna hurt you
I just wanna see what's in your hand

It’s a really good song and one I'd like him to consider for his live set.

Bonehead's Bank Holiday
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the vinyl release of (What's The Story) Morning Glory?

If I could pick just one song to sum up the spirit of Oasis it would be this, every time I hear it just makes me smile. What I like about it is that you can just sense the fun and definitely how pissed up Liam and Bonehead were when the band were recording it.

I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE IT!

Listen to the track below.

Born On A Different Cloud
Written by Liam Gallagher
Heathen Chemistry

Noel Gallagher "I don't believe Liam wrote this song"

High praise indeed and rightfully so as it's a fantastic song. It was unlike anything Liam had written before, it's definitely one of the highlights for me from 'Heathen Chemistry'. His songwriting had moved on at an astonishing pace from ‘Little James’. This track and the other songs he wrote on the album showed he could more than hold his own when it came to writing songs for the band.

Below is audio from June 7th 2002 from the Witness Festival in Ireland.

Boy With The Blues
Written by Liam Gallagher
From various versions of 'Dig Out Your Soul'

Why? Why, Why? was this not on the final album? The beauty of Liam's early songwriting efforts were how simple and catchy the songs were. By the time 'Dig Out Your Soul' was released tracks this showed that Liam had now firmly established himself as a songwriter. And a mighty fine one at that.

What a tune... What would have made 'Dig Out Your Soul' even better? This song.

A crying shame this was never attempted live as it would have sounded immense at the BBC Electric Proms with the Crouch End Festival Chorus.

Listen to the track below.

Bring It On Down
Written by Noel Gallagher
Definitely Maybe

The song kicks off at around 1000MPH with all the venom of a Funnel-Web Spider, imagine The Sex Pistols 'Pretty Vacant' and 'Anarchy In The UK' met in the 90s and had a love child it would be this song.

When I first started watching the band back in 1994 this is one of those songs that sticks in my mind from those gigs. Over the years I’ve always seen comments on forums and in recent years on social media about Tony's drumming and that he wasn't all that.

I'm not having that in the slightest watch or listen to this song live from his time in the band, Alan White and Zak Starkey tried it live but it was always missing something for me and that something was Tony's drumming.

Below is a video from October 15th 1994 from The Metro in Chicago, USA.

The Cage

Hidden track on Heathen Chemistry

It took me ages to realise that this was a hidden song on the album, I think the first time I was aware of it was when people were talking about a hidden song on the forums.

I just thought it was strange that my copy just kept going, it's a nice little tune.

Listen to the track below.

Can Y'See It Now? (I Can See It Now!!)
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally a track on the Japanese release of Don't Believe The Truth.

I can imagine this being used in a scene in a movie when someone is travelling from one place to another, looking out of a window of a moving train, bus or car and looking at various landmarks.

Great little tune, that's definitely worth listening to.

Listen to the track below.

Carry Us All
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the 'Sunday Morning Call' single

Another quality B-side, we are only on the letter C of this A-Z and it's just like I'm repeating myself over and over again when superb tracks like this pop up.

The first time I heard this song I thought Noel sang about a tampon revolution, I really like the chorus on this track and think it is a really good tune both musically and lyrically.

Cast No Shadow
Written by Noel Gallagher
(What's The Story) Morning Glory?

This wasn't one of my favourite songs on the album on first listen but over the years I have fallen in love with it. Every time I hear this it reminds me of a friend who died a few weeks before we were going to see Oasis play at the LCCC in Manchester in 2002. It was always one of her favourite songs, every time I hear it I can close my eyes and picture her singing it word for word.

I don't own much in the way of memorabilia but her Mother found her unused ticket for the concert a few months after she died and gave it to me. I'd love to own one of the band members guitars or a shiny platinum or gold disc. When I win the lottery I will buy something nice like that and treasure it.

But that unused piece of paper that's framed in my house along with other personal Oasis items will always be priceless to me.

It’s just an absolutely superbly written song that was really emotional for me to hear Liam sing live again after all these years.

I wish I could've seen Richard Ashcroft's face when he first heard it for the first time as it was dedicated to him.

Below is a video from August 10th 1996 from Knebworth Park in England.

Champagne Supernova
Written by Noel Gallagher
(What's The Story) Morning Glory?
Released as a single outside the UK

This is MY absolutely favourite Oasis song, and it has been since the first time I heard it. It has for me everything that defines Oasis. Absolutely massive guitar rifts a mental guitar solo, vocals and lyrics. It's just a band on top of the World and the charts. I've sung this song on my own, with friends, with my kids in the car and at concerts with thousands of people word for word.

What does "slowly walking down a hall faster than a cannonball" mean? I don't know or care to be honest with you.

All I know is that I want to be caught beneath that landslide in a Champagne Supernova in the sky.

Absolute perfection from beginning to end and the perfect ending to (What's The Story) Morning Glory?

Below is a video from November 4th 1995 from Earls Court in London, England.

Cigarettes & Alcohol
Written by Noel Gallagher
Definitely Maybe
Released as a single and has spent 79 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

This song was played more times than any other song live and for me is an absolute anthem. I remember buying the cassette single for this, I think it was limited edition and shaped like a packet of cigarettes.

When my Dad first heard the song he said "they've ripped the guitar intro off T-Rex".

I went to see Liam last year and loved it when Bonehead joined him on stage for this absolute stone cold classic. It was easily the highlight of the gig and probably the tour for me.

It was an anthem for the youth of the 90s and judging by the kids around me going absolutely mental at that concert and at others I attended it still is today.

Below is a video from April 13th 1994 at the Lomax in Liverpool, England.

Cloudburst
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Live Forever single

By the time 'Live Forever' was released I had stopped going to my local Woolworths, they only ever stocked the cassette and CD single. I headed to the town centre to check out what offers Our Price, HMV or Virgin Megastore had on as I wanted every format the single was released on.

This has all the elements you want in an Oasis song, great lyrics, vocals, drums and guitars. It's a shame it didn't appear on 'The Masterplan' but that could have easily been a double album with bonus tracks with ease.

Listen to the track below.

Columbia

Definitely Maybe

This is my alarm clock on my phone and it has been for years, the first thing I hear when I wake up is that strange guitar sound. The first thing that grabs you by the back of the neck is the bassline that is constantly prominent throughout the track.

It's now Bonehead and Noel's turn to crank those guitars up before Liam sings those now famous lyrics “There we were now here we are.''

A right stomper of a track with a bit of a groove that you want to go on and on forever whenever you hear it live. I was so chuffed when Liam played this on the first date of his current world tour as like many others it was the first Oasis song I ever heard.

Come on, come on, come on, come on
Come on, come on, come on, come on

Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Yeah, yeah, yeah!
Yeah, yeah, yeah!

Colour My Life
Written by Liam Gallagher & Bonehead
Unreleased Demo

This song was recorded at Abraham Moss Studio in Manchester in late December 1991.

I think that this is one of the better songs from the early recordings. Liam’s vocal is really strong on it and the band sounds absolutely brilliant. What I really like about these and some of the other demos is that you can clearly hear every single member of the band.

Listen to the track below.

For those of you who don’t know parts of this early demo were turned into Noels collaboration with the Chemical Brothers ‘Setting Sun’ that was released in 1996 on there ‘Dig Your Own Hole’ album.

The track reached number one on the Official UK Singles Chart, this particular demo I have listened to quite a bit over the years..

Cum On Feel The Noize
Written by Noddy Holder and Jim Lea
Originally released on the Don't Look Back In Anger single.

Get your boots on skinheads! Not the best cover the band ever did but it's definitely one of the more memorable ones. It reminds me of the first night at Maine Road that was by far the best concert I have ever had the privilege to attend.

It was my first time in Manchester, my first concert at a stadium and you couldn't have asked for a better ending to the gig.

The song was only performed twice with Liam on vocals, both of those occasions were at the Maine Road concerts in April 1996.

Noel has performed this song twice also on 'Later With Jools Holland' and on 'Top Of The Pops'.

Below is a video from April 28th 1996 at Maine Road in Manchester, England.

D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman?
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Shakermaker single.

I haven't heard this song since about last week, such a great song and one of those early B-sides that I absolutely adore. It reminds me of being young and having all these dreams and aspirations that years later never came true.

It was a genuine surprise to hear Liam sing it last year at a few of his gigs.

My absolutely favourite recording of the song is from 'Live By The Sea' when Noel fucked it right up and played 'Talk Tonight' to the crowd instead.

Below is a video from April 17th 1995 at the Southend Cliffs Pavilion in England.

D'You Know What I Mean?
Written by Noel Gallagher
Be Here Now album.
Released as a single and has spent 25 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date

It starts off with over a minute of plane noises, Morse code and feedback and clocks in at nearly eight minutes long, it was the first single to be released from 'Be Here Now'.

This song is just amazing with a chorus that gets me singing along with ease. Just like the other tracks on the album, it's long, overproduced, loud and that's why I love it.

I loved the build up to the release of ‘Be Here Now’ probably more than any other album the band released. You couldn’t get away from Oasis even if you wanted to. The music was constantly on rotation on the radio, MTV practically had a new documentary about them every other week or some sort of Oasis special.

People who I knew thought me and a few of my friends were strange for liking guitar music in general back in 1994. They had now changed their mentality completely, they thought Oasis were the best thing since sliced bread. Most of them were before that into a mixture of dance music and hip-hop.

Like many people my age they were now embracing bands like Blur, Pulp, The Verve, Ocean Colour Scene, Supergrass and more.

The UK tabloids always had some sort of a daily exclusive on the band. I remember pictures of Liam making the front page of a number of them as he had a new haircut. The NME may as well have called itself the 'Oasis Fanzine' for much of the mid 90s as the band were constantly on the cover of it in some form.

Ahead of it's release the album cover was even being analysed by several newspapers, some of the theories were absolutely absurd. Brian Cannon said in an interview years later that many of the items were picked at random from a BBC props warehouse.

I believe the inflatable globe pictured on the cover was in homage to the cover of ‘Definitely Maybe’ and I know that Bonehead suggested that a Rolls Royce should be dumped into a swimming pool.

When the album was eventually released I picked up my copy from HMV as you got given a certificate of purchase, it was basically a glorified receipt.

The album sold over 424,000 copies on the first day of release and up until 2015 was the fastest selling album in British history.

The video below is from Earl’s Court in 1997, I don’t know what Guigsy had smoked before the gig but he looks like he’s having the time of his life.

Digsy's Dinner
Written by Noel Gallagher
Definitely Maybe

These could be the best days of our lives, thanks to songs like this they certainly were. Only Liam could get away with singing Lasagne on stage and still look cool as fuck. I liked this song from the first time I heard is as it's just good fun.

The lyrics are like a chat up line.

I'll treat you like a Queen
I'll give you strawberries and cream
Then your friends will all go green
For my Lasagne

For some strange reason I always associate this song with going to my first Oasis gig at The Tivoli in North Wales and not Lasagna. It was a few days after ‘Definitely Maybe’ was released. My Mum drove me and my friend up to North Wales to see them. She waited in the car while me and my friend went and watched them.

Below is a video from August 31st 1994 at The Tivoli in Buckley, Wales, this video is probably the reason why I associate the song so much with that gig.

Don't Go Away
Written by Noel Gallagher
Be Here Now
Released as a single in several countries outside the UK

For me this is one of the most beautiful songs the band ever released, it was dedicated to Bonehead's mother in the album notes. This is one of two Oasis songs that has ever made me cry, I had to pull over my car last year when this came on my car stereo as it broke my heart instantly.

Music is such a great thing if you are feeling hurt or lost, certain songs always have a way of delivering a shot of antidepressants to your soul when you need it most. This song was one of them.

It doesn't make me sad anymore in fact it's the opposite. I'm glad that person lit up my life and she wasn't in pain anymore.

Below is a video from January 21st 1998 on the Tonight Show With Jay Leno in Los Angeles, USA.

Don't Look Back in Anger
Written by Noel Gallagher
(What's The Story) Morning Glory?
Released as a single and has spent 46 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date

Where do I begin with this song? It genuinely really has got it all. The piano intro from John Lennon’s Imagine, amazing hymn like lyrics and an absolutely clinical guitar solo and more.

The people of Manchester took it and turned it into an anthem of defiance after twenty two men, women and children were killed after a terrorist attack at Ariana Grande’s concert at the Manchester Arena on May 27th 2017.

Below is a video from June 4th 2017 when members of Coldplay and Ariana Grande played it at One Love Manchester.

Eyeball Tickler
Written by Gem Archer
Originally released on the Lyla single

One of my favourite tunes that Gem wrote during his time with the band and surprise surprise this was never played live. That is a real shame as it would have fitted in well with tracks like 'The Meaning Of Soul' that went down so well at the bands gigs around the time.

Another of those songs that could have easily been included on ‘Don’t Believe The Truth’ with ease, its 2:47 minutes of pure in your face rock 'n' roll.

Gem Archer I salute you!

Listen to the track below.

Fade Away
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Cigarettes & Alcohol single

Another of those songs that Noel's lyrics seem like were written just for you. It reminds me of being a young child and not having a care in the world. Spending your days dreaming of being a Jedi Knight, footballer or a famous actress when you get older.

It's typical of the early songs that I fell in love with, the great thing about this song is that even when it's stripped down to just an acoustic track like the Warchild version it still sounds amazing.

Listen to the Warchild Version below.

Fade In-Out
Written by Noel Gallagher
Be Here Now

Everyone knows Johnny Depp plays slide guitar on this song, Noel Gallagher was on holiday with him when the demo for the track was recorded on the Caribbean island of Mustique.

This is by far my most played track from 'Be Here Now' its absolutely brilliant.

The song is just under seven minutes long, I honestly think this and other songs on the album are like fine bottles of wine as they get better with age.

The summer sun it blows my mind
Is falling down on all that I've ever known

This song stands out for me as it's difficult to see anything like it appearing anywhere in the Oasis back catalogue. It's a superb song with some absolutely great lyrics, I really hope Noel brings this back into his High Flying Birds set one day.

Check out the remixes from The Prodigy, The Chemical Brothers and the Amorphous Androgynous.

The Fame
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the All Around The World single

And they all laugh at your despair
Sniffing your cocaine
I'm a man of choice in an old Rolls Royce
And I'm howling at the moon

YES this is another one of those songs I'm absolutely shocked was never played live. The crowd would have gone absolutely mental for this underrated gem of a track. Another track I absolutely adore it's got brilliant lyrics, all the bands instruments cranked right up, drug references and a big catchy chorus.

Heathen Chemistry

I first heard this song a few weeks or months before it was released along with the rest of 'Heathen Chemistry' when the album was leaked online. Another one of those songs I always preferred to listen to live compared to the studio version as it always sounded bigger, faster and louder.

Below is audio from June 7th 2002 at Finsbury Park in London, England.

Fuckin' In The Bushes
Written by Noel Gallagher
Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants

This would have been my choice as the opening track on the bands compilation album Stop The Clocks as it’s easily the best instrumental the band did by miles.

Believe it or the ‘Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants’ album was banned by Walmart in the US due to there objection to the title of this song.

As much as it reminds me of jumping up and down with thousands of people at gigs it always reminds me of the film 'Snatch'.

For every action there is a reaction and a Pikey reaction is quite a fucking thing!

Gas Panic!

Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants

For me and many others this is by far the stand out moment on the 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' album.

The opening lyrics delivered by Liam "What tongueless ghost of sin crept through my curtains?
Sailing on a sea of sweat on a stormy night" just grab you by the ears and says “HEY YOU! fucking listen to this”.

As a fan of the band and of Noel lyrics this one song stands head and shoulders above anything else on the album.

The lyrics and music on this track are unlike anything the band did before or after it. People say it's one of the most underrated songs in the oasis catalogue. Not by me and others who have heard it...to them it's just simply brilliant.

I like this track it’s unlike anything the band did before. One of the cool things around the time of the albums release was that Big Brother Recordings and the NME ran a competition for fans to submit their versions of 'The Shock Of The Lightning', 'Bag It Up', 'The Turning' and this track.

Brazilian duo 'The Outs' won it for a cover of 'Bag it Up' but I really liked there version of this song so much that I'm posting instead of the audio of the song.

The Girl In The Dirty Shirt

Be Here Now

Shockingly only ever played live once in Dublin in 1997 with Noel supplying the vocals. Since the first time I heard this song I've loved it, the vocals on this track from both Liam and Noel are just sublime. When there voices are combined on tracks like this, it just adds something extra to the song.

Not my favourite track on the album but another one I really do think is great, it's tracks like this that are hidden away on albums are why Oasis to me were such a great band.

Below is audio from December 5th 1997 at The Point in Dublin, Ireland.

Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants
Released as a single and has spent 13 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

Not to sure If I heard the single or the Austin Powers demo first that leaked online. This is just another great song from the band and one that I wasn't happy about when they dropped from the setlist in later years..

I still listen to this often It's got a heavy bass line, some really good guitar work, drum loops, Liam blowing a whistle and a killer chorus.

'Standing On The Shoulders' is often just overlooked by many critics as being a bit lacklustre, it had some great moments on it like this.

Below is a video from March 23rd 2000 at the Ancienne Belgique in Brussels, Belgium.

Going Nowhere
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Stand By Me single

A shame that this was never played live, another brilliant song that makes me feel nostalgic .

Noel's voice on this is just top drawer, superb lyrics, strings and guitars.

I LOVE songs like this, it never ceases to amaze me how high the standard of the bands singles were on the first three Oasis albums.

Listen to the track below.

Guess God Thinks I'm Abel
Written by Liam Gallagher
From Don't Believe The Truth

It's songs like this I'd love Liam to play at his solo gigs. The casual fans might not even know about the existence of this song, it's a really nice tune and I loved it when it was played acoustically by the band.

Below is a video from May 20th 2000 from The Late Late Show in Dublin, Ireland.

Half The World Away
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Whatever single

This song just reminds me of my Mum as it was her favourite Oasis song and for that very reason it's one of mine.

The one good thing with running this site is that I get to hear this song almost every day when Noel is on tour. It just makes me think about being at home and singing the intro to The Royle Family with her. Such a great song that is always one of the highlights of a gig.

Below is a video from my last ever Oasis concert on July 21st 2009 at the iTunes Festival in London, England.

Headshrinker
Written by  Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Whatever single

I don't care about it being a B-side as this track is the dogs bollocks, my only complaint about it is that it was hardly ever played live.

It's one of those songs that makes me think of someone saying in the studio "Fuck it lads turn everything up to max volume".

What I really like about this track is that you can hear every member of the band, Guigsy's Bass, Tony's drums, Bonehead and Noel on guitar and Liam's vocal delivery is superb.

Below is a video from April 17th 1995 at the Southend Cliffs Pavillion in England.

Hello
Written by Noel Gallagher, Gary Glitter and Mike Leander
(What's The Story) Morning Glory?

What a great tune and for me it's the perfect opening to (What's The Story) Morning Glory?, no messing around with this one straight down to business. I have played this song to death over the years. I'm not to sure how many copies over the years of the album I've bought, this song and album was the soundtrack to my life from late 1995 until August 1997.

Not just by me but millions of people who bought it, I still listen to it often as it's an absolutely brilliant album.

I've had the pleasure of seeing this song played live on so many occasions it didn't matter if was at Earls Court, Maine Road, Knebworth, Dublin, Cardiff, Newcastle or any of the other cities and venues I visited over the years this song was always a highlight of the set.

When the opening rift of this song was played at the bands first night at Finsbury Park in 2002 "OHHHHHHH MY FUCKING GOD!" the place just erupted and went fucking mental.

That was by far the loudest and craziest crowd I ever had the pleasure of being in.

From where I was stood you could see various items of clothing, cups, umbrellas and all sorts of items getting thrown into the air. The place looked like a scene straight out of a war film, but with an amazing soundtrack.

Below is audio from July 7th 2002 at Finsbury Park in London, England.

Helter Skelter

Decent cover of The Beatles classic from The White album, who cares if it better or not than the original it's just a superb song.

Familiar To Millions

A superb cover version that made me hunt down and listen to the original version of it as I hadn’t heard it before.

On April 5th 2000 Oasis played at the Paramount Theater in Seattle, they played this song for the first time and dedicated it to Kurt Cobain. It was coincidentally six years to the very day since Kurt died.

Lyrics from the song “It’s better to burn out than to fade away” were left in his suicide note.

Below is audio from that part of the gig.

(What's The Story) Morning Glory?

Amazingly this was never played live, it’s a real shame as it's one of my favourite songs the band ever recorded. Often overlooked by people as the sheer quality on ‘(What's The Story) Morning Glory?’ is just absolutely outstanding.

It's another one of those classic album tracks by this band that just reminds you of how good they were.

I love everything about the song the lyrics are superb, Liam's vocals, drumming, guitar work and production.

Heathen Chemistry

A really good catchy song with a superb chorus, Liam and Noel's vocals toward the end the track are just brilliant. This song always went down well at concerts and sounded absolutely superb when they played it on CDUK on March 16th 2002.

Hung In A Bad Place

Heathen Chemistry

Absolutely insane lyrics about bananas, hasta mananas and Tarzan singing, I like this song it's decent. It's another one of those Oasis for me that always sounded better live.

I Am The Walrus
Written by John Lennon & Paul McCartney
Originally released on the Cigarettes & Alcohol single

Note to other bands: If you are ever going to attempt to cover 'I Am The Walrus' THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT!

By far the best cover the band ever did and the last song I heard the band play live in 2009 at the iTunes Festival. This song is easily the best cover they ever did. It ended some of the best concerts I ever attended, it's just absolutely amazing.

Below is a video from June 26th 1994 at the Glastonbury Festival in England.

I Believe In All
Written by Liam Gallagher
Bonus Track on various versions of Dig Out Your Soul

A right foot tapper of a tune, this sounds like quite a bit of the material Liam was writing at the time. This could have easily slotted into ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ with ease.

Well worth a listen.

Listen to the track below.

I Can See A Liar

Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants

A really underrated song by quite a large number of fans. I really like it as you can hear how good a drummer Alan White is, Liam's vocals on this track are absolutely brilliant.

I've always preferred listening to this song live compared to the studio version.

Below is a video from May 2nd 2000 when the band appeared on the Late Show With David Letterman in New York, USA.

(I Got) The Fever
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Stand By Me single

Absolutely brilliant song that would have sounded fantastic I imagine as it never got played live.

Tracks like this are why I looked forward to buying every single the band released, not sure if anyone else did this but I'd skip the single so I could listen to the B-sides first.

Be Here Now

This song just kicks arse the timing of Liam's vocals are brilliant, great lyrics  guitars, drums EVERYTHING!

I love nothing better than singing along to this as it's just a great song. I don't care what anyone thinks or has to say about this album or song I absolutely love it!

This is another one that was never played live, I always found that strange as it’s also the shortest song on the album.

Dig Out Your Soul
Released as a single and has spent 3 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

This song for me is the best thing Liam wrote during his time in Oasis, it was a real shock for me on 'Dig Out Your Soul’. We had seen touches of great songwriting from Liam in the past but this track is just another level above anything that came before it.

I really like the last part of the song that features audio taken from one of John Lennon's last interviews in 1980.

Below is a video from August 14th 2008 at the Black Island Studios in London, England.

Idler's Dream
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on The Hindu Times single

The first time I heard this it sent shivers down my spine and melted my heart at the same time.

Amazing piano work with some heartfelt lyrics and Noel's vocal on this is absolutely phenomenal.

This was the first Oasis song (I think) that didn't have any guitars on it, I really like the version Noel did of it a few years ago during the ‘Chasing Yesterday’ tour with just him and an electric guitar.

This should definitely be played by him more often.

Listen to the track below.

If We Shadows

Be Here Now (Chasing The Sun Edition)

This was a real surprise on the album, I wonder how many songs like this Noel has hidden away in his sock drawer over the years.

Definitely worth listening to.

The Importance Of Being Idle
Written by Noel Gallagher
Don't Believe The Truth
Released as a single and has spent 22 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date

This track just oozes quality from beginning to end, keeping up with the tradition of the song I'm going to be really lazy with my comments about it.

The following lyrics always reminds me about being Welsh "I lost my faith in the summertime cos it don't stop raining"

Below is the official music video for this song as Rhys Ifans is in it.

It's Better People
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Roll With It single

Another B-side that was played to death by me and other fans I imagine while waiting for the band to release ‘(What's The Story) Morning Glory?’ It’s a really nice song and one I often forget about. I'm pretty sure this song was only ever played twice in Munich and Milan in 1996.

Listen to the track below.

It's Gettin' Better (Man!!)
Written by Noel Gallagher
Be Here Now

If I was to pick one song to sum up 'Be Here Now' it would be this one, If I could have picked the first single from the album it would have definitely been this.

The first time I heard this song was at Knebworth, I had absolutely no idea what it was. I knew they had been playing new material ahead of the concert thanks to the music press and tabloids.

This song just makes me really happy probably more than any other song by the band. If I’m having a bit of a shit day I just turn put this song on and turn up the volume to max.

Just over seven minutes long full of catchy lyrics, great harmonies from the boys, superb guitars and Whitey smashing the absolute shit out of those drums.

All together now “IT'S GETTING BETTER MAN!”.

Below is a video that was in a documentary called Right Here, Right Now that was broadcast on BBC1 on August 20th 1997.

(It's Good) To Be Free
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Whatever single

Another quality B-side that's more then stood the test of time, I remember playing this song and the other tracks on the single for months. Absolutely brilliant lyrics and vocals from Liam and Noel, great drumming and guitars it truly is a fantastic song.

Noel used to open his High Flying Birds concerts to this, I'd love Liam to give it a bash live one day.

Below is a video from April 17th 1995 when the band appeared on The White Room.

I Will Believe
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Supersonic single

I hadn’t listened to this song in quite a while before I listened to it today to refresh my memory.

It’s a decent tune what I like about it is how fresh Liam's vocals are, this song was another one that played to death by me in the early days.

I bought the CD single for this originally for £1:99 on the day it was released, and I have played it thousands of times over the years. it's been hiding away up in the attic for years now as I listen to the bulk of my music on my iPod.

The version of this song that appeared on the ‘Supersonic’ single was from a live session the band did for BBC Radio 5 in August 1993.

Listen to the track below.

Just Getting Older
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the The Hindu Times single

This song just makes me feel really nostalgic, as I’m getting older I find these lyrics make me look back on certain events in my life and smile. I love these type of B-sides, this could have easily fitted on 'Heathen Chemistry'.

Keep The Dream Alive

Don't Believe The Truth

I really do think highly of the songs Andy Bell wrote for this album, I like the chorus on it as it's so catchy. A real shame that this was never played live in front of an audience.

Just plug your headphones turn up the volume and listen to it nice and loud as Liam's voice is amazing,

Don't Believe The Truth

I think this was one of the first songs I heard from 'Don't Believe The Truth' I woke up one morning to find a few songs had leaked online. I won't lie this and the others were on my iPod in minutes.

I was aware of the song as a very early demo of it leaked a few years before it's eventual release.

It's a real shame that there are not many songs featuring both Liam and Noel on joint vocal duties like this. It's a really nice song that was only ever played live by Noel once on Italian radio.

Listen to the track below.

Let's All Make Believe
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Go Let It Out single

Some of life's big important questions.

What came first the chicken or the egg? Is there life on Mars? Why the ACTUAL FUCK was this not included on ‘Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants?’

Such a superbly haunting song with amazing lyrics outstanding music and Liam's vocal delivery on it are up there with the very best he ever did.

Next year is the 20th anniversary since ‘Standing On The Shoulders’ was released. And I for one hope that the band are going to give fans something official to buy to celebrate that milestone.

Here’s a suggestion ask Noel to have a quick rummage around in his sock drawer and see if he has any long lost songs from that era hiding in there.

Stick the original album, B-sides and the demos together with a selection of live performances in a nice package. Then put them in a super sexy box set with some alternative photographs of the album artwork and an imitation £2 coin with the bands logo on.

It stops fans like me moaning who haven’t had anything official to buy in a few years.

Listen to the track below.

Life In Vain
Written by Liam Gallagher and Bonehead
Unreleased Demo

It's a decent song and sounds really raw and basic as a fan of the band it’s another great insight to how the bands sound started to evolve.

On two separate tapes that were handed out by the band in 1992 list it’s listed as 'Accoustic'.

Listen to the song and members of the band talk about it and a few others of the early songs below.

The intro is just like 'Supersonic' but that's where the similarity ends. This song is just so uplifting incredible lyrics, melody and vocals it has it all. I can't help but sing along to it every time I hear it.

Sailing down a river alone
I've been trying to find my way back home
But I don't believe in magic
Life is automatic
But I don't mind being on my own

Live Forever
Written by Noel Gallagher
Released as a single and has spent 68 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

What can you write about this song that's hasn't been written before. It's constantly voted as one of the greatest songs of all time in public polls. I can't for the life of me remember the first time I heard it but it was probably on the Evening Session on Radio 1. Growing up pre-internet it was always the radio and more often than not that show that introduced me to new music.

I remember watching the music video for the first time on the ITV Chart Show and the one thing that still sticks in my mind now is how cool Liam looked sitting on that chair on the wall.

My favourite live performance of it is from 'MTV's Most Wanted' that was broadcast on August 18th 1994.

As much as the studio and various live versions sounds great. This performance just shows what a superb song it actually is when it's stripped down to just the basics

Lock All The Doors

Unreleased Demo

Another demo that I have played to death over the years, the song has evolved over the years

Parts of the song were first turned into ‘My Sister Lover’ that was one of the B-sides on 'Stand Be Me'.

In 2015 it was reworked and appeared on Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds second album ‘Chasing Yesterday’.

Lord Don't Slow Me Down
Written by Noel Gallagher
Released as the bands first digital single and has spent 3 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

The official audio and Liam's version that leaked always remind me of the superb documentary 'Lord Don't Slow Me Down'. If you haven't seen it look it up as the bands commentary is just pure comedy gold.

I would love to hear either of them blast this out at a few gigs.

Listen to both versions of the track below.

Love Like A Bomb

Be Here Now

The one song I was really looking forward to hearing ahead of ‘Be Here Now’ being released, as Noel had said in interviews leading up to release it was the best song he'd ever written.

It didn't disappoint a masterpiece in all its glory, such an underrated and underappreciated track on the album that I still listen to often

The Masterplan
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Wonderwall single

For most bands this would easily be the greatest thing they ever recorded. For Oasis it was just another one of those fantastic B-sides that Noel Gallagher had such a great habit of writing.

This song is just absolute perfection from beginning to end, I was so happy when it was put back in Noel's recent setlist as for me and thousands of others it should be one of the songs he should be legally obliged to play.

Below is a video from August 23rd 1996 at MTV Unplugged in London, England.

The Meaning Of Soul
Written by Liam Gallagher
Don't Believe The Truth

This song seriously gets me in a mood to go out have a serious night out, It's a great tune that I always thought sounded better when it was played live.

I think this type of song would slot perfectly into Liam's current setlist.

Merry Xmas Everybody
Written by Written by Noddy Holder & Jim Lea

Recorded for The Royle Family's Christmas episode back in 2002, and released for the 'NME In Association with War Child Presents 1 Love' album.

Morning Glory
Written by Noel Gallagher
(What's The Story) Morning Glory?

I was naive when I was younger I didn't realise the line " When you're chained to the mirror and the razor blade" was about cocaine use.

Such a stomper of a track that really comes alive when it's played live, I adore the video below of the track at the River Plate Stadium in Buenos Aires as everyone in the stadium are in the zone.

It's the one crowd I would have loved to have been a part of, people of Argentina I salute you.

Mucky Fingers
Written by Noel Gallagher
Don't Believe The Truth

I always liked the studio version, but for me this song become something else when it was played live. It looked to me like all the band enjoyed playing this one.

The first time I heard this cover I was blown away, the band absolutely nailed this one. I'm pretty sure the first time I heard this was in April 2000 was on 'Later ... With Jools Holland'. It was such a great track to close the bands live set with in the years that followed.

My Sister Lover
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Stand By Me Single

I take my hat off to Noel Gallagher, the rate he was writing quality songs like this in the 90s is just phenomenal. Most bands would love to have material like this to play live, and like so many great songs the band put out over the years this was another one of them that was never played live.

Parts of this song came from the original demo for ‘Lock All The Doors’.

Dig Out Your Soul

Pass Me Down The Wine

Originally released on The Importance Of Being Idle single.

It's a really nice song, I think it was far superior and more original then some of those remixes that would start appearing on the bands B-sides to singles in future releases.

Definitely Maybe

It's the first song on 'Definitely Maybe' and for me up there with the very best material the band ever put out.

If ever a song was written with Liam in mind it's definitely this.

I remember buying 'Definitely Maybe' and putting it on my walkman and wishing I had louder headphones. One of my highlights of seeing Liam on his last tour is this song, older fans like me losing their shit. I tell you what was even better is you saw the exact same reaction from the younger members of the audience.

It’s the perfect opening track to what for me is the greatest album of all time ‘Definitely Maybe’.

It really does sound as good now as it did nearly a quarter of a century ago.

Rockin' Chair

Originally released on the Roll With It single

Waiting for the memories to come back and play, this song always does that with ease. It's such a genuinely beautiful song and Liam's vocal delivery on it is haunting. This song evokes so many memories for me personally.

Every time I hear the lyrics " It's all too much for me to take, When you're not there" always have reminded me of my Granddad. In my mind I can picture him sitting on his settee watching Grandstand on a Saturday Afternoon and telling me his absolutely rubbish jokes.

The one thing conducting this A-Z is how many of these songs and lyrics instantly remind me people or parts of my life.

It’s one of my favourites from 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' and for me one of the best things they ever recorded.

Roll With It
Written by Noel Gallagher
Released as a single and has spent 48 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

This song always reminds me of the time it was released, Oasis were starting to appear everywhere and I mean absolutely fucking EVERYWHERE in places bands from my era never did.

The music press had already cottoned on to a simple yet effective marketing strategy of sticking the band on the cover of magazines as it would sell more copies.

By now they were starting to appear in the tabloids on a daily basis, commercial radio stations, morning television they were even spoke about on the News.

Not just on MTV News that was normal by then, they were on the real news that my parents watched with Trevor McDonald.

Everyone around my age remembers this song I think for the big Oasis v Blur chart battle that took place.

The one thing that always sticks in my head about this song is when the band appeared on Top Of The Pops on August 17th 1995 and mimed it. Absolute brilliant banter from the band, whoever came up with that idea in the camp is a true comedy genius.

Songs like this are why Noel Gallagher is one of my favourite songwriters ever, the older I get the more it reminds me of those carefree days growing up and having fun with my friends. I would have loved to have heard Liam sing this at 'MTV Unplugged' as I think it would have been one of the highlights of the set.

For me 'The White Room' performance that was broadcast on December 31st 1995 is true perfection.

Sad Song
Written by Noel Gallagher
First released on the vinyl release of Definitely Maybe.

It’s just an absolutely phenomenal song to be honest with you, and one I still listen to often. The first time I heard this was when I bought a cassette from one of those dodgy traders at a Record Fair in Cardiff. It was on that along with a number of live recordings and demos.

The real surprise for this song would happen years later when the 'Supersonic' documentary was released in 2016. It featured a recording of Liam singing the track in the studio .I wonder how many other recordings like that are hidden away in a vault that we have yet to discover.

I'd love the band to release a huge anthology type box set with them all on.

See The Sun

Unreleased Demo

A superb demo that I have played to death it was recorded at the Abraham Moss Studio in Manchester during the end of 1991. I like these and the others from around this time as you can hear every member of the band clearly.

They really need to get all these demos together and release them so we can get the full story behind them all.

Shakermaker
Written by Noel Gallagher
Definitely Maybe
Released as a single and has spent 62 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

No other songwriter can take a melody from a Coca-Cola commercial and turn it into a timeless classic. This is another song that I absolutely played to death when it was released.

Coca-Cola took legal action as the melody for the verse was originally taken from ‘I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing (In Perfect Harmony)’ by Roger Cook, Roger Greenaway, Bill Backer and Billy Davis.

Bonehead on the band being sued by Coca Cola. "We ripped it off, so they had the right to sue us. Fair enough. People will steal from other bands but change the lyrics We just did the same thing but kept some of the same lyrics in. We drink Pepsi now."

Below is a video from June 7th 1994 when the band appeared on Naked City in the UK.

She Is Love

Heathen Chemistry
Released as a double single with Little By Little and has spent 13 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

Heartfelt lyrics from that is obviously about Noel’s Wife Sara, I've always been surprised that he's never played this live if I’m honest.

She's Electric

(What's The Story) Morning Glory?

Every time I hear this song I can't help but sing along to it, it's absolutely marvellous from beginning to end. I've got nothing but absolute love for this song. Like everything else on ‘(What's The Story) Morning Glory?’ it’s just brilliant.

Lyrics about sisters, blisters and cousins it's just a great song.

Dig Out Your Soul
Released as a single and has spent 6 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

‘Dig Out Your Soul’ had some great songs on it and this is one of them, I will never forget the first time I heard this track as it just made me want to get up and dance. Zak Starkey's drumming on this is simply outstanding. It’s one of the highlights for me from the album and also warmly received at concerts. Chris Sharrock did a superb job playing this live to be fair to him.

This song reminds me of the anticipation of that particular album being released, the scramble to get tickets, interviews and more.

I got my feet on the street but I can't stop flying
My head's in the clouds but at least I'm trying
I'm out of control but I'm tied up tight
Come in, come out tonight

Below is a video from October 16th 2008 at Wembley Arena, London in England.

Shout It Out Loud
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Stop Crying Your Heart Out single

I never get sick of hearing this song, the lyrics, vocals and the guitar solo are just brilliant. Another track that could have easily made its way onto the album with ease.

I loved it when Noel finally got around to playing this live at a few of his High Flying Birds concerts a few years ago.

Listen to the track below.

Sittin' Here in Silence (On My Own)
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Let There Be Love single

I find this song soothing, the piano and Noel’s vocals are just a perfect combination.

My only complaint about this song is that it’s too short.

Definitely Maybe

Songs like this are why Noel Gallagher is for me one of the greatest songwriters this country has ever produced. The lyrics are just like an open love letter for the world to embrace.

I dream of you and all the things you say
I wonder where you are now?

This song could have been sung by anyone and it would have been a hit, thank the lord that Noel had a brother called Liam who delivered arguably the best vocal take of his life on this track.

The first Oasis instrumental and I love it’s absolutely amazing, the band sound so good in this. Just listen to it and appreciate it.

Dig Out Your Soul

Great tune that ends ‘Dig Out Your Soul’ in style, this is easily one of the most crisp sounding Liam vocals on the album. Shame this was never attempted live as it's would have sounded fantastic.

Some Might Say
Written by Noel Gallagher
Released as a single and has spent 81 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date

The bands first UK number one single and at the time a taster of what was to follow a few months later with ‘(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' This song just brings back so many good memories of probably the best years of my life. It's catchy, fun, lively and most of all a absolute anthem.

My favourite memory of this song was at the band's first night at Maine Road, me and my friend were both stood up on our seats at the back in the stands. We were slightly drunk and singing along arm in arm and having the time of our lives.

One of my favourite Oasis songs to rock out with my air guitar, the artwork for the single has always been one of my favourites along with ‘Shakermaker’. I had a poster for the 'Some Might Say' single on the back of my bedroom door for years until I broke it.

I never really took much notice of single and album artwork before I got into Oasis and I think the work that Microdot did with Oasis is absolutely timeless. It wasn't just quality music you were buying when you picked up a single, album or a tour programme it was the complete package.

Have a really good look at those early single and albums and appreciate the work and effort that went into making and designing them.

I have done Q&A's with Brian Cannon and Michael Spencer Jones and the attention to detail the pair of them did on those were absolutely phenomenal.

I really liked the artwork on the later albums, but to me there was something magical and timeless about them.

Songbird
Written by Liam Gallagher
Released as a single and has spent 11 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

For me this is up there with ‘I’m Outta Time’ as the best song Liam wrote during his time with Oasis, heartfelt, catchy, simple and beautiful. This is the one tune I really want Liam to sing again, it always went down well with the audience.

As much as I like the original the demo is really good it reminds me of The Beatles.

Listen to it below.

Stand By Me
Written by Noel Gallagher
Be Here Now

I really do love this song you are probably sick of that by now if you have made it this far down the list. But it is such a fantastic song, I like the chorus on this as it’s so catchy.

It doesn’t remind me of anything or anyone in particular unlike other songs. What's sad is that large chunks of the bands music was untouched live by them in the later years especially tracks from this album.

Great vocal delivery from Liam and a song I do think is often overlooked by fans.

Below is a video that was in a documentary called Right Here, Right Now that was broadcast on BBC1 on August 20th 1997.

Stay Young
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the D'You Know What I Mean? single

Another B-side that I played to death at the time of its release leading up to the eventual release of 'Be Here Now'. It's better than a quite a few of the tracks that would end up on that album but that was always the case with Oasis.

Absolutely amazing live and when it was in the setlist this always got a great reception. I'd love nothing more then Liam to bring this beauty out of retirement and introduce it to a new generation of fans.

Below is a video from December 14th 1997 at the G-MEX in Manchester, England.

Step Out
Written by Noel Gallagher, Stevie Wonder, Henry Cosby & Sylvia Moy
Originally released on the Don't Look Back In Anger single

Originally this was going to appear on (What's The Story) Morning Glory?, it was eventually released on the ‘Don't Look Back In Anger’ single after a writing credit and royalty share was given to the song’s composers.

The best songs are the ones that make you feel happy and this is one of them, the live version that appeared on 'Familiar To Millions' is brilliant.

Earlier this year footage of Liam singing this song appeared online and it took me by surprise, as a fan to hear his voice on a song you always associated with Noel was brilliant.

Stop Crying Your Heart Out
Written by Noel Gallagher
Heathen Chemistry
Released as a single and has spent 20 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date

Where do I start with this song? It's a song that reminds me of sad things like friends and family members who are no longer with me. It also reminds me of good times like concerts and drunken nights out singing it with my friends.

As much as I loved the early sound the band had when I first went to see them, I've always had a really soft spot for the big ballads the band did like this.

Absolutely amazing song that has been a favourite of mine since the first time I heard it.

I think the title of the song would be a great name for a website.

Strange Thing
Written by Noel Gallagher
Definitely Maybe Reissue

Another one of those early recordings that are absolutely brilliant, the guitars on this song are so good and to me doesn’t sound like anything else the band ever recorded.

This was finally released officially on the special edition of 'Definitely Maybe' that was released in 2014.

The track was originally recorded in early 1993 in Liverpool.

Noel Gallagher speaking to The Times in 2011 “The first song I wrote [for Oasis] was ‘Columbia’, then came ‘Rock ‘n’ Roll Star’, a song called ‘Strange Thing’, which is still knocking about, and Whatever.”

If you haven’t heard it, give it a listen, you won’t regret.

Listen to the track below.

Street Fighting Man
Written by Mick Jagger & Keith Richards
Originally released on the All Around The World single

Fucking hell! I'm covered in fucking wires everywhere, bastards!

What's not to like about this song, it's Oasis covering The Rolling Stones.

Sunday Morning Call
Written by Noel Gallagher
Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants
Released as a single and has spent 8 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date

I really do like this song, it's a shame Noel doesn't as I'd really like to hear him sing it again one day with the High Flying Birds.

It’s a shame that songs like this are just left to lay dormant as this always sounded great when they were played live.

Below is a video from February 23rd 2000 at the Canal+ Studios in Paris, France.

Supersonic
Written by Noel Gallagher
Definitely Maybe
Released as a single and has spent 60 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

The song is just vintage Oasis plain and simple this track will never never get old. It still sounds like it was recorded yesterday evening.

I will always associate this song with the first time I ever saw the band on The Word, up until that point I don't think I'd ever seen what they all looked like.

The lead singer looked like the cool kid from school with all his mates with him. I think this is probably the Oasis song I’ve listened to the most over the years as it’s just ‘Supersonic.

Below is a video from March 18th 1994 on The Word in London.

The Swamp Song

Originally released on the Wonderwall single

This song still evokes so many memories of some of the best concerts I ever attended. An absolutely brilliant instrumental that I will forever associate with watching the band live.

Take Me

I absolutely love this song another one that has been played to death by me over the years I wish the band would have recorded this one properly as it’s superb.

Take Me Away
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Supersonic single

It's hard to believe that my absolute love for this bands B-sides started with this song just over twenty five years ago. I loved this song the first time I heard it in 1994 and in 2019 that love hasn't diminished in the slightest.

I have thought about this song for a few days and I really do think this could have been the first song that I ever heard Noel sing. I remember hearing radio sessions they did for Radio 1 but I’m sure those that I heard only had Liam on vocal duties.

For the life of me I honestly don’t remember if they were before or after ‘Supersonic’ was released.

I’d generally love Noel to play this live with his High Flying Birds probably more than any other song on this list.

Listen to the song below.

Talk Tonight
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Some Might Say single

I've always thought that this song is up there with the best that Noel's ever written, wonderful lyrics mixed with some wonderful music.

This track was written after the band's disastrous Whisky A Go Go concert in Los Angeles in 1994.

Noel left the band and took a flight to stay at the house of a girl he'd been seeing in San Francisco.

Below is a video from November 26th 2006 at the Union Chapel in London, England.

Thank You For The Good Times
Written by Andy Bell
Originally released on the Stop Crying Your Heart Out single.

I really think that this is a really good song, well written and Liam’s vocals on it sound great. I’ve listened to this quite a bit over the years. I think it would be the perfect track to end an Oasis documentary with a montage of  fans and the band at various points in the Oasis timeline.

I think the fan made video below is just perfect.

Those Swollen Hand Blues
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the Falling Down single.

The last B-Side the band gave us, tracks like this hidden gem are why I always bought every single Oasis single.

You might not be aware but if you listen to the start of this track it's the outro to 'Mucky Fingers' from 'Don't Believe The Truth'.

Listen to the track below.

To Be Where There's Life

Dig Out Your Soul

This is one of only a few Oasis songs that doesn't feature any guitars in it. Great vocals and what I really like about this song is the bass that's so predominant throughout the track..

What a groove!

Turn Up The Sun
Written by Andy Bell
Don't Believe The Truth

It's one of my favourites on the album, what a song to start the 'Don't Believe The Truth' album with.

This should have been the first single from the album as it is just brilliant.

The band opened with this song during the world tour promoting the album, and it always set the tone for the evening. It's probably best known for assisting in the breaking the barrier at the band's gig at The City Of Manchester in 2005.

This song should never have been dropped from the bands set list. It's my summer jam, and for me it's easily Andy Bell's finest contribution to the bands back catalogue.

The Turning
Written by Noel Gallagher
Dig Out Your Soul

Absolute genius this track is in every aspect of the word, the lyrics, music and Liam's vocals on it are simply sublime. Another one of those classic album tracks that was never played live, this could have and should have been a single as it's that good.

Listen to the track below.

Underneath The Sky
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the 'Don't Look Back In Anger' single

I’ve always really liked this song Liam’s vocals are superb on it, it’s absolute quality from beginning to end.

What I find absolutely amazing about his track is it’s the most requested out of all the Oasis B-sides by far on social media as my ‘Track Of The Day'.

Underneath the sky of red
Is a storyteller sleeping alone
He has no face and he has no name
And his whereabouts are sort of unknown

Another one of the surprises fans got with the album when it was released a few years ago, I really like hearing stuff like this.

Up In The Sky
Written by Noel Gallagher
Definitely Maybe

Amazing song just like everything else on that album, one of my favourite recordings of it is from when they played on The Evening Session on BBC Radio 1 in December 1993.
The session was on my first ever Oasis bootleg I had on cassette.

Waiting For The Rapture
Written by Noel Gallagher
Dig Out Your Soul

This is a proper stomper if there's an Oasis song to stomp to it's this, you could stomp to it lying down. The real beauty of this song like others Noel has written through the years is that when it's all stripped down and played acoustically it's still a superb song..

Below is a video from December 1st 2006 at Ben's House in Stockport, England.

Whatever
Written by Noel Gallagher & Neil Innes
Released as a stand alone single and has spent 112 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

A few months after Definitely Maybe was released this absolute anthem followed, this song like others in my life came at just the perfect time. The lyrics seem like they were written just for me, I was old enough to drive, go to the pubs or clubs and do basically whatever I wanted to.

One of those Oasis songs that I always sing whenever I hear it, all together now you know the words.

I'm free to be whatever I
Whatever I choose
And I'll sing the blues if I want

Below is a video that was broadcast on December 10th 1994 on Later With Jools Holland in London.

Where Did It All Go Wrong?
Written by Noel Gallagher
Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants

This song is another highlight from 'Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants' it's not as bad as the critics and some fans made it out to be, it's just under appreciated for what it is and that's a really good song from a underappreciated album.

The track has some amazing lyrics in it, the guitar solo in it is superb and Noel's vocals on it are outstanding.

Below is a video from December 10th 1994 at the Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto, Canada.

Produced by UNKLE and criminally hidden away on the soundtrack for the movie Goal, a really beautiful piece of music that more people should be made aware of.

This should definitely be put on the likes of  iTunes and Spotify.

Within You Without You
Written by George Harrison
Recorded by BBC Radio 2 for the 40th anniversary of Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band

Geoff Emerick the engineer in charge of the original sessions used the same equipment The Beatles did to record this version.

It’s a really good cover to be fair, definitely worth listening to.

(What's the Story) Morning Glory?
Released as a single and has spent 84 weeks on the Official UK Singles Chart to date.

Easily the most recognisable and commercially successful track the band ever released. My kids know every single word to this and my youngest does a cracking impression of Liam singing it.

It's just sticks in your subconscious, it's a favourite song of mine to sing in the car with the kids or with thousands of others singing it in an arena or a field.

I don't care that large amounts of people only know the band for this song, it's their loss not mine.

Below is a video from June 21st 2004 at the Glastonbury Festival.

You've Got The Heart Of A Star
Written by Noel Gallagher
Originally released on the 'Songbird' single.

This song was just another one of those fabulous B-sides until one day in August 2006.

I'd just come out of hospital after my daughter was born and after members of my family and friends had come to say hello to her I was finally left at home in peace.

I’m pretty sure it was the first time I was really alone with her, I fed her and changed her and she went to sleep in her moses basket. I found my iPod put on my headphones laid down on my settee and I did the following on my iPod.

Pressed Music
Scrolled to Oasis
Then pressed shuffle

This song came on and about half way through the song I broke down, everything I had ever wanted for years was right in front of me. After all the heartbreak of trying for a child for years, I had never been happier. It could have probably been any song that did it to me but looking back on it I’m glad it was an Oasis song.

Every time I hear this song now it just reminds me of one of the happiest moments of my life.

PS If my youngest child ever reads this and think it's unfair that I didn't have an Oasis song for you I do. It's called 'Be Here Now' as you've been kicking up a storm from the day that you were born xXx

You've Got to Hide Your Love Away
Written by  John Lennon & Paul McCartney
Originally released on the Some Might Say single that was released in Japan.

One of my favourite Beatles songs covered by my favourite band, I think that’s a perfect ending to this A-Z.

Listen to the track below.

What I decided to do with the videos I have used in this post is to show a wide range of footage and audio from all over the world and not just the best version of each live track.

When I first had the internet I discovered a bootleg forum that has now closed down, but on that forum there was a large number of Oasis fans from every single corner of the world.

A number of them helped me start of this website and my collection of bootlegs, they recommend me ones to download, sent me CD's and DVD's for free in the post as I had nothing they needed.

Oasis were to me the best band in the world, and what I have found over the years time and time again is that they had and still have the best fans in the world.

Thanks for reading...

Live Forever xXx

The image used on this post is by the extremely talented Pete McKee it's of a young lady listening to Oasis in her bedroom.

It's been my social media icon since the first day I seen it and it will never be changed.

It's called 'Revolution From Your Bed' for a closer look at the print click here.
