Review: 'It's A Beautiful World' (Andrew Weatherall/Mike Pickering & Graeme Park Remixes)

Below is djmag.com review of Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds 'It's A Beautiful World (Andrew Weatherall/Mike Pickering & Graeme Park Remixes)'.

8.5

A punk-funk/death disco reduction of Noel Gallagher's positive message, 'It's A Beautiful World', from Andrew Weatherall. His vocal mix keeps all the elements, with a driving no-wave beat, but his dub mix is the real showstopper here, with primitive-sounding drum machines triggering scorched acid hooks. To accompany, Hacienda survivors Mike Pickering and Graeme Park work a sterling effort with their proggy, back-to-'92 style UK house remix.

Thanks to James

"It's been a great opportunity to have my songs reworked by people whose own work I am a huge fan of...I have found the whole thing hugely inspiring" - Noel Gallagher

Noel asked David Holmes to remix 'The Girl With The X-Ray Eyes' and when he received it back he absolutely loved it... David organised a local school choir to re-sing the vocals. Many thanks to the The St Michael's School Project.

Listen here!

David Holmes explains how the track came about: "When I first heard 'The Girl With The X Ray Eyes' I immediately heard the influence of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' which made me think of another great version by the Langley School's Project...after listening to the lyrics on repeat for a few hours I thought they had a real picture book sensibility so I called my daughter's primary school choir. The kids rehearsed for 5 days and I stopped by and recorded it in their assembly hall."

Audio: Andrew Weatherall's Remix Of Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds‘ ‘In The Heat Of The Moment’

If this seems like a strange fit, think again: Weatherall’s only a few degrees of separation away from Noel through his work on Screamadelica, and he’s regularly lent his winning touch to UK guitar bands, from My Bloody Valentine to Starsailor. In typical Weatherall fashion, it’s a patient remix, hypnotically building tension for a good four minutes before letting Noel’s vocal loose. And that ending, with the flanged hi-hats? Yes mate.
