Amorphous Androgynous On The Album They Recorded With Noel Gallagher

British production duo Amorphous Androgynous have revealed their side of what happened to the album they recorded with Noel Gallagher, and say the former Oasis man missed out on what could have been "the most exciting moment in modern fucking music history".

Gallagher's collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous was announced in tandem with his debut album proper, 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds', at his 2011 press conference. The record wasn't released and Gallagher recently told NME it will "never see the light of day" because "the mixes weren't right" and he just "couldn't be arsed" to put out another record.

Speaking exclusively in the new issue of NME, which is on newsstands now and available digitally, Amorphous Androgynous's Gaz Cobain revealed that the duo had no idea Gallagher was working on two records simultaneously, and only discovered that he'd recorded another, more traditional album with producer Dave Sardy when it was announced at the press conference. "At that point," said Cobain, "we knew our record was fucked."

Cobain said suspicions were raised when Gallagher was absent from the recording sessions, having supplied the duo with a bunch of demo recordings. "There had to be an artistic process where we would all be expressing opinions and getting deep down and dirty with each other, and that essentially is where this record went wrong," Cobain said. "Noel gave us all the power and we conducted most of those two years in absolute isolation. I don’t think he wanted to fully interface with the craziness of our music."

He added: "You’re looking at a two-year process here – thousands of hours of our time. At no point was our record supposed to be a remix album or a companion piece… For us, this had the potential to be the most exciting moment in modern fucking music history. This was his solo album; this was the idea that Noel had held back in Oasis. He'd name-checked 'Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble', krautrock and worked with The Chemical Brothers. Now was his moment of freedom; his moment of revolution."

In spite of the experience, Cobain said he holds no ill feeling toward Gallagher, and said they get on "totally well". Two tracks from the sessions have made their way on to Gallagher's forthcoming 'Chasing Yesterday' album.

Amorphous Androgynous release the third installment of their 'A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble' compilation/remix series, 'A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble (Exploding In Your Mind) - The Wizards Of Oz' on March 16. It features Pond and Tame Impala alongside a wealth of little-known psychedelic artists past and present from Australia and New Zealand.

Dave Sardy On Working With Noel Gallagher And More

A lot of folks are saying that Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds is the best Oasis record in 15 years, and if you ask the album's producer, Dave Sardy, there's a good reason for that: "It's because Noel wrote all the songs. Those first few Oasis albums were all Noel, as is this one. So there you go - figure it out."

Sardy's association with Gallagher began with Oasis' 2005 album, Don't Believe The Truth, and continued on 2008's Dig Out Your Soul. But it was on High Flying Birds that the two hit a creative peak. "I've been waiting for this album since I met Noel," says Sardy. "He's unlike any other artist I've ever worked with, except for Johnny Cash, in that he's always writing. Even when he's warming up his voice, he's writing material. So I'm not surprised that this record turned out pretty great."

The Brooklyn-born Sardy started out as a musician, most notably with the group Barkmarket, before moving to the other side of the glass. By the early '90s, he became known as a "hardcore superstar," thanks to his work with bands such as Helmet, Orange 9mm and Cop Shoot Cop. Eventually, he helmed well-received discs by Jet and The Dandy Warhols, which caught the ears of the Gallagher brothers.

While Sardy's star rose amongst the artist community, his work also attracted the attention of the film industry, and during the past decade he's worked on scores for films such as Zombieland, 21, the just-released Ghost Rider 2: Spirit Of Vengeance and the upcoming End Of Watch (written and directed by David Ayer, who scripted Training Day).

MusicRadar caught up with Sardy at his LA studio to talk about Noel Gallagher on High Flying Birds, his approach to production, what it was like for a Brooklyn guy to work in the famed Abbey Road Studios and why he finds film scores so exhilarating.

Noel Gallagher Has No Opinion Of Beady Eye

In the current issue of Mojo (on sale now) Noel Gallagher is asked what's his opinion on Beady Eye.

Noel said "If I say it's shit, people will say that I'm only saying that because it's Liam. If I say it's great, people say the same thing. I have no opinion on it. I honestly haven't heard the album but I've seen them on the telly, and fair play to them, man, they're doing it. I hope that when my record comes out people don't compare the two because they're completely different things."

In the 16-page MOJO exclusive Will Hodgkinson speaks to the former Oasis songwriter about his return to recording, his new album, the end of his old band, that fateful plum and the essential films, books and music that define the man.

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, is set to release on October 17 and is his first new studio material since he left Oasis in 2009 after an argument with his brother and bandmate Liam. He is also planning a UK tour after the album's release.

"'The Death Of You And Me' has a windswept feel, with a slightly country influence and a big, stomping chorus," writes NME of the comeback single. The LP was recorded in London and Los Angeles with producer Dave Sardy.
