Noel Gallagher "Oasis Were Always A Stadium Band Even When We Were Playing Nightclubs"

Noel Gallagher has spoken to the current issue of Q on how Oasis tried to experiment in the studio but it never panned out.

He said "We had very narrow musical tastes, as a band, that we agree could on. That did get a bit frustrating at times, particularly when i worked with The Chemical Brothers and thought, 'Well it fucking works. All we've got to be is a bit adventurous.' And it never transpired. I guess when you're selling out stadiums all over the world, you're just like 'fuck it, this is what it is'"

He added "Oasis were always a stadium band even when we were playing nightclubs".

Listen Again To Oasis At Knebworth

Steve Lamacq celebrates the 20th anniversary of the seminal Britpop moment, when the biggest and most bombastic band of the time, Oasis, were at the height of their powers and played to 250,000 people over the weekend at Knebworth House.

In this special programme, exactly 20 years to the day since the first of the two events, Steve explores the build-up to the weekend, reflecting on why it was extraordinary for so many and sharing memories from those who were there and the memorabilia they have cherished all this time.

Steve will have new interviews from the bands which supported Oasis over the weekend, which included Prodigy, Manic Street Preachers, The Chemical Brothers, The Charlatans and Ocean Colour Scene. Plus we'll hear from those who made the monumental gigs happen, incuding Mike Lowe who built the biggest sound rig the country had seen at the time, and Henry Lytton Cobbold , owner of the Knebworth Estate.

In the final hour of the programme, you will be able to hear the concert, as it was broadcast live in 1996.

Oasis At Knebworth 20 Years On: ‘Noel Gallagher Popped Up To The House For A Bath’

An incredible 250,000 people flocked to see the Britpop legends at the Hertfordshire stately home over the two nights.

At the time, they were the biggest concerts held in the country.

Both shows bring back fond memories for Knebworth House’s Henry Lytton Cobbold, who has been reflecting on the 20-year anniversary of the Oasis gigs this week.

There were a reported three million ticket applications for the concerts – enough for Oasis to have sold out 24 consecutive nights at the iconic music venue.

The Gallagher brothers, Noel and Liam, were at the height of their popularity following the success of second album (What’s the Story) Morning Glory? and the concerts are regarded as the defining moment of the Britpop era.

But Knebworth’s Henry Lytton Cobbold revealed: “At the end of February we didn’t even know there was going to be a concert.

“We didn’t get the enquiry until the end of February.

“That is an extremely short lead time for a concert of this size.

“I think Robbie Williams took a year-and-a-half’s worth of planning.

“They had five months to get this together.

“That’s the shortest lead time we’ve ever had.

“They apparently had three million people apply for tickets, so they could have done six more weekends on that basis.

“So it was a massive moment.”

As well as Wonderwall band Oasis, the supporting cast over the two nights included the likes of The Prodigy, Manic Street Preachers, Cast, The Charlatans, The Chemical Brothers and Ocean Colour Scene.

Henry, however, doesn’t remember too much about the actual music. There were thirsty Oasis fans to satisfy.

He said: “My excuse is not because I was backstage quaffing Champagne with the likes of Mick Hucknell and Martine McCutcheon, my excuse is that we were running the bars that year.

“And to do the bars for 125,000 people, and we need to accept Oasis’ audience is a bar-based audience, it’s not a Buxton Water audience, we were particularly busy, particularly Martha [Henry’s wife], who was managing the bars.

“So I don’t remember much of the music.

“But it was an absolutely fantastic weekend and there are some great stories to come out of it.”

One such tale is of Noel Gallagher having a bath at the house on the Sunday morning.

“Oasis decided this was a party and they were going to stay in Winnebagos backstage,” said Henry.

The following morning Noel came up to Knebworth House asking if he could have a bath.

“My dad showed him to our Queen Elizabeth bedroom bathtub, which is a four-poster bathtub.

“As it was a big weekend for them, my dad brought Noel a bottle of Champagne to have in the bath.”

Henry added: “Noel’s talked about this since, saying he was brought a bottle of Champagne by a ‘liveried servant’ when, in fact, it was his Lordship.

“They then signed the visitors’ book and Noel signed ‘Noel Gallagher – clean!’.

“Then his bodyguard wrote his name and ‘Dirty!’.

“We should have perhaps kept the soap.”

Amorphous Androgynous On The Album They Recorded With Noel Gallagher

British production duo Amorphous Androgynous have revealed their side of what happened to the album they recorded with Noel Gallagher, and say the former Oasis man missed out on what could have been "the most exciting moment in modern fucking music history".

Gallagher's collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous was announced in tandem with his debut album proper, 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds', at his 2011 press conference. The record wasn't released and Gallagher recently told NME it will "never see the light of day" because "the mixes weren't right" and he just "couldn't be arsed" to put out another record.

Speaking exclusively in the new issue of NME, which is on newsstands now and available digitally, Amorphous Androgynous's Gaz Cobain revealed that the duo had no idea Gallagher was working on two records simultaneously, and only discovered that he'd recorded another, more traditional album with producer Dave Sardy when it was announced at the press conference. "At that point," said Cobain, "we knew our record was fucked."

Cobain said suspicions were raised when Gallagher was absent from the recording sessions, having supplied the duo with a bunch of demo recordings. "There had to be an artistic process where we would all be expressing opinions and getting deep down and dirty with each other, and that essentially is where this record went wrong," Cobain said. "Noel gave us all the power and we conducted most of those two years in absolute isolation. I don’t think he wanted to fully interface with the craziness of our music."

He added: "You’re looking at a two-year process here – thousands of hours of our time. At no point was our record supposed to be a remix album or a companion piece… For us, this had the potential to be the most exciting moment in modern fucking music history. This was his solo album; this was the idea that Noel had held back in Oasis. He'd name-checked 'Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble', krautrock and worked with The Chemical Brothers. Now was his moment of freedom; his moment of revolution."

In spite of the experience, Cobain said he holds no ill feeling toward Gallagher, and said they get on "totally well". Two tracks from the sessions have made their way on to Gallagher's forthcoming 'Chasing Yesterday' album.

Amorphous Androgynous release the third installment of their 'A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble' compilation/remix series, 'A Monstrous Psychedelic Bubble (Exploding In Your Mind) - The Wizards Of Oz' on March 16. It features Pond and Tame Impala alongside a wealth of little-known psychedelic artists past and present from Australia and New Zealand.

Noel Gallagher Dismisses Oasis Glastonbury Reunion

Noel Gallagher has said he would love to headline Glastonbury, but laughed off rumours of an Oasis reunion for the famous festival.

The musician, who has announced the release of a new album and single, said his old band "never really got on with" the event despite playing it several times.

Speaking to fans at Facebook's London office, he said: "I'd be up for doing it, I'm going regardless."

Asked if any of the new songs would appear in a setlist of an Oasis reunion, he said: "What reunion set? Am I missing something out here?"

Earlier this year, his brother Liam sparked rumours the band were getting back together with a series of cryptic tweets that led one bookmaker to suspend betting on the band playing the Somerset festival.

Oasis, who split in 2009 when Noel walked out, had dozens of hits including Wonderwall and Little by Little in a career lasting more than a decade.

Noel's new album, Chasing Yesterday, will be released in March with the first single, In the Heat of the Moment, out next month.

The star revealed one of the tracks, Lock All the Doors, had taken him 23 years to write.

He said: "I gave a bit of it away to the Chemical Brothers in the nineties when we did Setting Sun and I always meant to finish it off.

"I kept the chorus but I could never find a way of getting the verse to tie in with this chorus and one afternoon I was coming out of the Tesco Metro where I live in Maida Vale and I don't know what it was it just hit me coming round the corner."

Glasgow's Medicine Men are already causing quite a stir having played only a handle of shows in their native Scotland, including a much talked about slot at this year's 'T in the Park' which saw the band pull a huge crowd for only their 5th ever gig.

Drawing excited comparisons with bands such as LCD Soundsystem, Tame Impala, The Chemical Brothers and Death In Vegas, the band mix soaring synths with kinetic breakbeats and bruising basslines, creating a glorious fusion of styles from sublime psychedelic rock to pumping dance music and everything in between.

Soulful, funky and oozing talent the band are set to cause a stir with this, their debut release, and their first show south of the border.

Pretty Green Auction Exclusive Gibson Guitar For Jon Brookes

Pretty Green will be hosting an auction for a signed Gibson LPJ guitar, kindly donated by Gibson Foundation. The guitar will be signed by some of the acts that play the Jon Brookes memorial gig at the Royal Albert Hall, later today.

The concert features James Dean Bradfield, Liam Gallagher and friends, members of The Vaccines and New Order, The Chemical Brothers and Dumb.

Proceeds will go to the Brain Tumour Charity in memory of Jon.

The Brain Tumour Charity is the leading charity in the UK, committed to fighting brain tumours, the biggest cancer killer of the under 40s, including children.  Over 9,000 families are devastated by the diagnosis of a brain tumour every year and, unlike other cancers, survival rates have not improved in the last 40 years.  Less than 2% of funding for cancer research in the UK is invested into brain tumours and The Brain Tumour Charity is determined to change this to improve survival.

Proceeds will be invested in The Brain Tumour Charity’s world-class research programme and will help to raise awareness of this devastating disease.

This is going to be a very special guitar with potentially some very exclusive signatures.

As soon as the auction goes live, I will let you know.
