Oasis Albums Featured In Top 125 Albums Of The Last 25 Years

SPIN Magazine has put two Oasis albums in the top 125 Albums of the last 25 years.

#71: Definitely Maybe

"For Oasis," SPIN wrote in 1996, "rock is a sport." And the game got started with Definitely Maybe, an assuming debut that "came on loud and brash...with songs about what life might be like as rock'n'roll stars." Soon after their first record, Oasis became rock'n'roll stars, of course -- thanks to a little-more-than-slightly absurd Britpop rivalry with Blur, as well as a notorious tendency to go big. As the magazine put it by the time Oasis made the cover, in 1997: "Amid this rather prudent, health-conscious decade of non-ostentation, Oasis have revived the grand rock tradition of hedonism and bad behavior."

#21 : (What's the Story) Morning Glory?

If Oasis wanted to claim they were bigger than the Beatles, then this was what stomped all over the "White Album". In 2003 SPIN pegged the record as essential britpop, singling out the track "Morning Glory" and its "sneering delirium worthy of Johnny Rotten, borne aloft on a towering inferno of guitar." The wild success of the album would later have Noel Gallagher wishing they'd taken some R&R before recording again. "We were fueled by youth and cocaine," he told the magazine in 2008. "We were surrounded by people telling us it was the greatest thing they'd ever heard."

Adam Ant Would Like To Fight With Liam Gallagher

Taken from a inteview with Adam Ant, read the full interview here.

I'm a punk rocker, I'm a pirate metal rocker now because these guys, metal, they look great, they're sexy, they play hardcore and they don't give a monkeys. And they look like Hayley. And you. So why not, fuck them. No really, I'd love to go on there. I'd love Paul Morley, Liam Gallagher talking about style. Oasis have been ruling the roost, remaking Beatles records and trying to convince people it's not. They've got one fucking song, 'Wonderwall'. What else you got? I mean, Noel's OK but hey, you ain't fucking Miles Davies, you certainly ain't fucking Bryan Ferry and you aint Adam Ant, Charlie."

He's won some kind of poll in Q magazine for the best front man ever

AA: "Well in my view he's the best backman. I mean, I've got a Q Award, I don't give a fuck. I gave it to me mum. Q, I mean fucking hell it must have cost them all of 30 pence, they can stick it up their ass. Those ones up there, the Ivor Novello awards, they're the only ones I've got in my flat because they are for songwriting, they're Oscars. I've not met the man, I mean he's probably a very nice chap…"

No he's not, I've met him

AA: "Marc Bolan was lovely. Bryan Ferry was lovely. Michael Jackson was lovely. Liza Minelli was lovely. I'm dropping these names because I fucking met these people and they taught me something: Be nice. People that are really brilliant are really nice, people that ain't got a lot of mouth. So here you go Liam, you cunt. I'd like to have a fight with him whichever way he wants: physically, mentally I'd beat him in anyway shape or form, I know that."

Well, if anyone ever needed a slap…

AA: "Yeah but he's probably got a very big bodyguard, but that's alright because I've got Hayley. I mean even the Spice Girls offered him out and he wouldn't take it."

Ex Oasis Lads On A Double

Oasis stars Andy Bell and Gem Archer must have sore backsides from sitting on the fence.

Neither bass player Andy nor guitarist Gem have taken sides with either Liam or Noel Gallagher since the Oasis split last summer.

But Liam is about to get them into rehearsal for live dates later this year and Noel has also needed the lads for demo sessions.

So it's all pointing towards some difficult times when the inevitable clash of commitments happens.

A source said: "It's a tricky situation for Gem and Andy.

"They are working with both Liam and Noel. Liam's begun rehearsing tracks for his new project, while Noel has been doing demos of songs as well.

"It's great for Gem and Andy, though. They get paid twice, but it's bound to lead to trouble in the future."

I hear Noel has more than enough material for a solo album.

He's had house moving and family duties to take care of but once that has settled I'm sure he'll be back to work.

Especially after another taste of the action on stage with Paul Weller last week.

He has also been recording with dance producers Amorphous Androgynous.

Duo Garry Cobain and Brian Dougans are responsible for one of the best rave tracks of all time - 1991's Papua New Guinea, recorded under the name Future Sound Of London.

Last year the duo re-tooled Oasis single Falling Down to spectacular psychedelic effect.

A lot of people are excited to hear what tunes will emerge, me included.

Noel Gallagher Set For Big Screen In A 'Manchester City' Movie

Manchester City FC and production company Endemol Sport have confirmed that they have teamed up to create what they are calling 'a landmark feature film' about the Premiership club.

Titled Blue Moon Rising, the film is set for release in cinemas in the Summer, with Endemol Worldwide Distribution handling TV and DVD distribution following its run-out on the silver screen.

The news follows on the back of rumours earlier in the year, suggesting that Endemol (which has a deal in place to help City build its brand globally) was set to make a TV documentary. At the time there was no indication that the production would secure a cinema release.

Blue Moon Rising focuses on a group of City fans through the 09/10 season, capturing their emotions in victory and defeat, while also taking the viewer (who we presume is also a fan) into the boardroom with exclusive footage and access to the club's new owners.

An interview with Noel Gallagher is also featured.

Manchester City's brand and marketing officer David Pullan said of the project: "Blue Moon Rising reinforces Manchester City's standing as the most fascinating story in the world of football.

"We wanted to give football fans around the world a unique insight into the club and its future by getting them close to the action in this unique year.

"It will be a lasting testimony to one of the most exciting years in Manchester City's history."

The film is directed by Stewart Sugg and produced by Nick London.

Endemol Sport MD Gregg Oldfield added: "This promises to be an entertaining, intimate, and funny film that reveals a passion for football rarely seen before on the silver screen."

Noel Gallagher Talks To Talk Sport

Noel Gallagher made his weekly appearance on Andy Goldstein’s Sports Bar last night (25 April) and spoke about the following:

Andy Goldstein: On last week’s show I said, ‘What have you got that’s exciting?’, and you said, ‘Something, but I can’t remember’...

Noel: “Yeah, I went to go and buy a suit. I didn’t get one cos I went... you.. obviously no one else knows this, but you said, ‘Oh Id go and see a guy’ blah blah, which is not really the best recommendation I’ve ever had in my life is the fashion which is Andy Goldstein, ‘Go and see my guy’- whatever, and he said to me, ‘It’s a guy called Terence Trout’, right, now that’s not a real name, I said to him, I’m not having that, there’s nobody born with a name Terence Trout, anyway, I went to Trouty’s gaff, right, and unfortunately the minute I walked in I got a phone call, me alarm was going off on me handset and I had to leg it, so I’ve not been back, so I didn’t get the suit.”

“Dr Octogon” theme tune:

Andy Goldstein: I got a letter which says,’Hi Andy and Jason, and greetings, Dr Octogon, shame the Dr Octogon jingle was deemed below par, so I’ve composed one myself.’ I’ve not heard this....
Noel: “Is this from Our Kid? It’s not from our Liam?”

(Play new Dr Octogon jingle)

Noel: “This guy obviously doesn’t understand the fundamental laws of jingles – they’re supposed to be short and sweet. That sounded like the drums of Burundi.... That’s rubbish.”

Andy Goldstein: He’s sent in a CD cover with your face on the front as Dr Octogon (link here: http://twitpic.com/1igyfd) I’ll send it to you, I’ll keep it... it’s unbelievable!

Noel: “Do me a favour – do not put it on your website!”

Andy Goldstein: Too late, it’s on Twitter already! The picture’s like you have just been told what’s on the TV.

Noel: “I tell you what – every time I’m stopped in the street by people, you know like autograph hunters that carry pictures?, every single picture that I sign of myself I look absolutely miserable.” “I can’t stand having me picture taken, it really, really nauses me up, I hate it.”

Man City

Noel: “I thought it all kinda went to plan yesterday, I thought Tottenham would get beat and I hoped we’d get a draw, but em, it’s all, if we win the next three games, it’s ours, but the big game is the Tottenham game, innit?, you know, but saying that, you’ve got to get past Villa, they’re still in it.” “I think next weekend decides everything – the Championship and 4th place, I think if we beat Tottenham we’ll do it because West Ham now haven’t got anything to play for, they’ll just be up for a kick about with Tevez.” “We don’t play Spurs til the Wednesday, we’ve got three games in that week, we play Villa Saturday, then Spurs on the Wednesday and then West Ham on the Sunday, it’s tough, plus we’ve got the Faroe Islands reserve goalkeeper!” “To be honest, the only positive I can take out of it is that he was a Mark Hughes signing, and Mark Hughes has signed some pretty good players for us. I thought he was just some... well, I don’t know where I thought they got him from, but apparently Mark Hughes kinda spotted him.” (Were you surprised, with all the money they have that goalkeeper wasn’t one of the areas they covered?) “Well, the lad Taylor we got from Villa has had his cartilage taken out, so it’s all been about the last couple of weeks, hasn’t it? But, you know, to be honest if I was City I’d be on the phone to Birmingham and saying, ‘Look, if he doesn’t come back in the next 48 hours, you’re not getting him next season.’” (I don’t think you can do that.) “We can do anything!! We’re owned by the Sheikh!! He owns the world, right, so we can do anything!”

Title Race

Noel: “Well, Liverpool have got the big game on Thursday, haven’t they?, so hopefully that’ll go to extra time and they’ll all be resting players, I can’t see Chelsea... if Chelsea would have just scraped it today, maybe the confidence would have been gone, but I think... what was it?,5-0?, I switched it off after 3-0.... What? 7-0? Well, it’s in the bag, really, innit?” (I don’t think Liverpool will want to win the game) “Regardless of that, Liverpool are not good enough to beat Chelsea... Liverpool are not good enough to draw against Chelsea, not when they are going for the double, I just don’t see it happening. I had a mate of mine, right, he’s a Liverpool fan and he’s texting me like, today, that they beat Burnley, and he’s like, ‘We’re still in it!”, and it’s like, look, even if City slip up, you’ve still got to beat Tottenham, right, you’ve still got to get more points than Tottenham, City and Tottenham aren’t going to slip up, and then you’ve still got to pass Villa – it’s not gonna happen! It’s not gonna happen, I mean the best they can hope for is winning the Uefa Cup, innit? I’d say if they won the Uefa Cup, that would be a great season for them, considering what’s happened.”

His trip to the Emirates on Saturday:

Noel: “I went to the Emirates on Saturday, and I ended up getting tickets for the directors box, I tell you, just let me list the people who were sat on my row... Fabio Capello, I didn’t speak to him, he looks a bit moody, do you know what I mean?, there was him, Stuart Pearce, Sven and his new bird – she’s not as nice as Nancy, but who is?, she’s alright, though, Terry Neill, Liam Brady, obviously all our Chief Executives and all that mob, and, this is the curve ball – Floella Benjamin! She’s Sven’s new bird! I was like, hang on a minute, England manager, Stuart Pearce – legend, yeah, all that, then, oh!, hello...” (Was she laughing by any chance?) “No, she was asleep like the rest of us. It was terrible, terrible, the best part of the game was when Adebayor came on, at least everyone livened up.”

Andy Goldstein: Are you going out to South Africa for the World Cup?

Noel: “I’m going.... well, I’ll tell you a story, I was gonna go but my missus is pregnant, right?, which is a bit of a bungle, really, cos we should’ve waited until after the World Cup, you know what I mean?, so I was planning on going, not for the month but anyway, I said, ‘Look, if they get to the semis... you know, I’m gonna go.’, and she started laughing, she’s like, ‘Semi finals? haha Yeah, whatever! Yeah, you can go!” So if they get there I’m gonna go for the last kinda few days, but I’m not really planning on it, to be honest. To be quite honest, getting around that country’s going to be really, really difficult, I don’t think they’ve got the infrastructure to deal with it.”

Plans for this week:

Noel: “I’ve got a wedding on Saturday, I’m going to be going, minus new suit. Then I’m getting my haircut, hopefully tomorrow.... eh, and then.... eh, I think that’s about, yeah, that’s it. You know what, last Sunday when I put the phone down and I thought, ‘Right, I’m gonna keep a diary of what I’ve done this week.’, and I kinda, I feel like I’m letting people down, I think like I should be telling people I walk around in a cape and a top hat, you know, but I kinda... I don’t do a great deal, I feel like I let people down when I’m in the queue at Waitrose, you know, buying stir-frys and stuff, you know what I mean?” (It’s not very rock n roll!) “No, it’s wok n roll!”

Gem recently joined Paul Weller on stage for the launch of his new album 'Wake Up The Nation' with a storming set at the Relentless Garage in London.

Playing to a packed venue, Weller's set mixed new material with old classics as well as some of The Jam's back catalogue

Gem took to the guitar during a rousing rendition of The Jam's anthem 'Start!', while the night was closed with an encore of 'Come On Let's Go' and 'Pieces Of A Dream'.

Noel Gallagher: I Was Italy's Lucky Mascot At World Cup 2006

Former Oasis man also reveals 'secret' about New Order's 'World In Motion'

Noel Gallagher has claimed he was a lucky mascot for Italy during their successful FIFA World Cup campaign in 2006.

Discussing his memories of the tournament on BBC's Football Focus programme, the former Oasis man revealed Azzurri player Alessandro Del Piero - a friend of Gallagher - believed he was a lucky charm for the side at the tournament.

The superstition started when Del Piero scored the winner for Italy in the semi-final of the tournament against Germany and ran towards Gallagher to celebrate.

"I was sat beside his wife. His wife reckons he was coming over to blow kisses at her, but what's actually happened is he's seen me and his wife happened to be there," Gallagher joked.

"He then gets it in his head that I'm his lucky mascot, so he said: 'You'll have to come to the final'. He made me wear the same clothes," he added.

Gallagher also claimed that New Order's 'World In Motion' - released to coincide with the 1990 World Cup - wasn't originally supposed to be a football song.

"They didn't write it specifically for that, I know for a fact it was just a song they had lying round and added a few words to," he said.

"I don't care what anybody says, the New Order song isn't really a World Cup song."

The full interview with Gallagher can be viewed on the BBC Sport website.

Paul Weller On The Oasis Split

Paul Weller once again discussed the Oasis split during a interview with The Independent, claiming Noel and Liam Gallagher were "going through the motions" before the band ended last year.

"I don't want to talk out of turn because I love Noel and Liam," he said. "You can see when someone's not happy. But I guess when you get to that sort of level and there's big business involved, it's harder to stop. I think ultimately it'll be better for music and for their own creativity."

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Some Might Say" is a song by British rock band Oasis and was released on the 24th April 1995.

The song was written by the band's lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It was the first single to be released from their definitive second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory ? in 1995, and provided the band with their first #1 in the UK Singles Chart.

The track was apparently inspired by the Small Faces and/or T-Rex. It was the last Oasis track to feature original drummer Tony McCarroll, who was asked to leave the band before the main recording sessions for (What's the Story) Morning Glory ? when tensions arose between McCarroll and the Gallagher brothers. The rest of the tracks on the album feature Alan White on drums.

The sleeve artwork, shot at Cromford railway station in Derbyshire, England, features art director Brian Cannon's father with wheelbarrow and his mother with mop. Also pictured are Matthew Sankey, Cannon's aide and Carla Knox, barmaid of his local pub. Liam Gallagher can be seen on the bridge whilst Noel can be viewed with a watering can. Cannon himself rates this piece amongst his greatest works.

The planned promo video for the song was canceled due to Liam not turning up for the shoot. Instead, a makeshift video was created using footage from the "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and US "Supersonic" videos.

B-sides
Aside from the title song, the single boasts some of Oasis' finest B-sides, all of which were deemed worthy to grace the critically acclaimed Masterplan album. "Talk Tonight", is one of many acoustic B-side tracks sung by Noel, and was, at the time, the most vulnerable song he had attempted. It was inspired by the near-breakup of the band in Los Angeles in autumn 1994, when Noel walked out without telling anyone and headed for San Francisco.

The B-side "Acquiesce" was released as part of the Stop the Clocks EP in promotion their compilation album, Stop the Clocks.

In an interview promoting the compilation album, Stop the Clocks, Noel stated that "Some Might Say" is the "archetypical Oasis song' and 'defines what Oasis is". Noel added later in the interview that along with "Some Might Say", its b-side, "Acquiesce", was also the song that defined Oasis.

The song also appears on Stop the Clocks, as do two of the b-sides. Suprisingly, this means that the "Some Might Say" single contains the fourth largest number of tracks to appear on Stop the Clocks of any Oasis release (after Definitely Maybe, Morning Glory and The Masterplan). Therefore, more songs from this single ended up on Stop the Clocks than Don't Believe the Truth (2 songs), Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, Heathen Chemistry (1 song each) and Be Here Now (no songs from this album appear on Stop the Clocks).

"Some Might Say" is a playable track in both Guitar Hero World Tour and The European version of Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades.

18 Years Of Oasis Documentary Needs Your Stories

For an up and coming documentary celebrating 18 years of Oasis, we want to hear your stories of the moments that defined your experience as a fan…

Whether it was that faithful night at Knebworth where you met your wife to the sound of Definitely Maybe, or how you were one of the first to see the potential behind the phenomenon after listening to Supersonic at an early gig that changed your life. We want to know how the key moments in your life were played out to a soundtrack of Oasis songs that have resonated in your head ever since…

We’re hoping to tell the 18 years story of Oasis from the fans perspective, so we’d like to hear your stories from any point in Oasis’ career so far upto and including the present day. Each story will ideally relate to your experience of a certain song and how it came to mean something significant for your own very personal reason. Stories can be big and small, happy or sad, emotional, inspiring, incredible or hilarious… but above all personal and referring to an experience that’s unique to you. Ideally we’re looking for stories we can get our teeth into: locations we can revisit; the story of an obsession that has persisted to this day; of how your family has come to be defined by Oasis… Stories we can explore in more than simply one line of dialogue…

A number of successful stories will be invited to take part in the film, which might for example involve revisiting Knebworth, or traveling back to relive the holiday of a lifetime that you’ll forever associate with Champagne Supernova…

Anyone interested should contact Pulse Films – sending through contact details and a summary of your story to oasis@pulsefilms.co.uk

Russell Brand: 'I Didn't Cause Oasis Split'

He rubbishes Liam Gallagher's claim...

Russell Brand has denied he was responsible for the break-up of Oasis.

Earlier this month, singer Liam Gallagher appeared to suggest his brother Noel’s friendship with Brand was behind the split last year.

He also compared Noel and the comedian to Neil and Christine Hamilton.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Brand said he had spoken to Noel about Liam’s comments, and that the only people to blame for the band’s break-up were the band themselves.

“Yeah, that was a bit odd,” Brand said. “I spoke to Noel about that.

“Look it's not like you're in a band for years and then you start hanging out with Russell Brand and it's over – as if the two things are mutually exclusive.

“The only people responsible for the breakup of Oasis are in Oasis.”

Brand added: “I don't want to be the Oasis Yoko Ono without even getting to have sex with John Lennon!”

The comedian’s comments came in the same interview in which he claimed that exposing young musicians to hard drugs would help strengthen the music industry.
