Noel Gallagher On The High Flying Birds, Liam, Oasis And More

It's virtually impossible to prepare for an interview with Noel Gallagher.

The former Oasis songwriter's notoriously tack-sharp mind can veer between seemingly disconnected topics in a second. It's best to sit there and do your best to keep up.

During an hour with the man known to those who work with him as The Chief, he discusses his new album, his friend David Walliams, his recent Radio 2 show, his plans for a new gameshow, The Beatles, Manchester City and last, but definitely not least, his beloved brew.

"If I'd known you didn't drink Yorkshire tea, I'd never have agreed to this interview," he says with mock horror. "As any tea-maker knows, it's the only bag."

Gallagher's debut solo album, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, was released earlier this week. The story behind the title? "So I wouldn't freak out when I saw it written down. The High Flying Birds don't exist, but I couldn't just be 'Noel Gallagher'," he explains, adding he took the name from High Flying Bird, a song by Sixties psychedelic rockers Jefferson Airplane.

A tour begins in Dublin on October 23 although, not to put a downer on things, the 44-year-old isn't really looking forward to the occasion.

"I wouldn't say I was excited. I'm not excited about anything, really, except the Manchester derby, which is the same day as the tour starts," he says, referring to Manchester City's forthcoming clash with red rivals United.

"'Ready' is the word, I'd say. I'm ready for what's about to happen, which is a lot of graft. I'm a level down from excited. If excited is green, then I'm definitely amber, but not red."

Noel Gallagher Finds It Impossible To Say "No Comment"

Rock legend Noel Gallagher hates his outspoken reputation, but can’t understand why more stars aren’t as honest as he is.

Ever since Oasis’s early days, Noel has been a favourite with journalists because of his loose tongue.

But he reckons he doesn’t mean to cause a stir, he just finds it “impossible to say no comment”.

The 44-year-old told me: “I’m just cursed with an absolutely endless stream of one-liners. I’m sorry about that.”

During the Oasis years, Noel was famed for rubbishing the band’s previous efforts, saying the new record was their best yet.

But the dad-of-three said: “I do interviews set up by my record label to promote the albums. I’m not a travelling salesman who is selling Noel Gallagher – The Brand.”

The megamouth, who quit Oasis in 2009, added: “People say it’s the way I talk in interviews that makes people interested.

“But they just mean I’m honest. ‘Oh, he’s got a way with honesty, that lad…’ How depressing is that?” He’s already regretting opening his trap about another record, due next spring, though.

He promised it would be more experimental than his No 1 Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

He sighed: “A lot of people are looking forward to it, which I’m a bit nervous about. They’re building it up in their own minds, thinking it’s going to be something it might not be when they hear it.

“It’s f***ing good, but I probably shouldn’t have announced it. But I just thought, ‘It’s finished, so f*** it, here’s what I’ve been working on’.”

After Oasis ended in a flurry of kung-fu kicks and punches, Noel Gallagher went away and quietly made a solo record, which could just be his finest collection of songs yet. In a revealing interview with Stuart Clark, he talks about new beginnings, making babies, Amy Winehouse, Morrissey, John Lydon, the Queen and that violent night in Paris with Liam.

The Tower Bridge Business Complex in Bermondsey, London SE16 seems an unlikely place for a scurvy rock hack and his faithful snapper companion to be heading, but tucked in among all the industrial units is Backline, the famous rehearsal space where Noel Gallagher is preparing for his first tour at the helm of new outfit The High
Flying Birds.

Walking into reception myself and the boy Keogh are greeted by a sign bearing a bastardisation of the old Hunter S. Thompson quotation, to whit: “The music business is a cruel and shallow money trench, a long plastic hallway where thieves and pimps run free and good men die like dogs. But there is a negative side.”

Ah, the good doctor always did have a way with words. Walking down the corridor to the outside terrace where Mr. Gallagher is holding court, we see evidence of the warren-like building having previously been occupied by Joan Jett, Corine Bailey Rae, Jimmy Page, Robbie Williams, the Manics, Frankie Goes To Hollywood, Massive Attack, The Raconteurs, Coldplay, Duffy, Kylie, Amy Winehouse, Rod Stewart, Muse, Paul McCartney and – cue swelling of national pride – Boyzone.

I’ve met Noel on eight or nine previous occasions and, while greeted with a firm handshake and smiley “hello”, he’s not his usual super-ebullient self today.

Maybe the ten-hour stints in the studio are getting to him or he’s worried about what sort of reception his first post-Oasis album, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, is going to get.

Noel Gallagher: 'I Won't Be Singing Liam's Songs'

Noel Gallagher has insisted that he won't be singing any of the tracks that his brother Liam is famous for singing from the days when they were in Oasis.

The guitarist, who has been enjoying the success of his latest venture with High Flying Birds and being named as Q Awards 'Icon of the Year'.

Fans who are hoping that Noel plays a few of the Oasis numbers are out of luck as he said that he's not even going to considerate it in his solo tour.

Talking to Rolling Stone magazine, he said: "I won't be singing anything that Liam's famous for singing."

But not missing an opportunity to have a pop at his estranged sibling, Noel said: "I'm not a natural showman, but I promise to turn up." (Referring to Liam's reputation for not making some appearances).

The brothers have been feuding since Noel quit Oasis in 2009.

Noel Gallagher Flies Free In Edinburgh

Review: After his turbulent years in Oasis, Noel Gallagher is back flying solo, making his first Scottish show a more relaxed affair on stage. Off stage, perhaps not so...

On first appearances the crowd tonight was much more demure than your average Oasis crowd, though the tributes were certainly there in many of the haircuts inhabiting Edinburgh's Usher Hall.

No sooner had that thought passed my head, when the lights dimmed and the stampede from the bar begun on all three levels. Ejecting their pints forward and squeezing their polo-shirts as close to the perspiration of Mr Gallagher as humanly possible, the hardcore fans rapidly turned the crowd into a pleasantly stereotypical mob.

Entering the stage with a wide-legged swagger in the style of someone who's spent much of their time riding horses, Noel Gallagher and his 'High Flying Birds' give themselves no introduction, beginning from his roots with an ironic Oasis track, (It's Good) To Be Free. The nod to his departure from Oasis after eighteen years had the upper circles of the venue like the terraces of an old firm match, whilst the pit downstairs looked like they were jeering on their best mate in a cage fight.

With fans propelling the rollick of the set, Everybody's On The Run from the collective's debut album is already well-known. Live the track, very much like the more melodic side of Oasis' personality, misses the wash of strings that are on record, though it remains to sound much more serious than previous musical ventures. This could, however, be a product of Noel's stern-faced performance.

Reportedly nervous about his first solo project, If I Had A Gun is dedicated to the Rock 'N' Roll Star's new wife Sara MacDonald. Referring to her as "The Queen Of Edinburgh," it's been reported that the Scot, present tonight, was responsible for encouraging the 44-year-old to fly solo. Lending itself towards the Live Forever, milder persona of Oasis, the track is already a coarsely sung ballad for the crowd.

After a few tracks with his four piece backing band (and none of them actually 'birds' by the way, far from it), Gallagher jumps back into Oasis territory almost playing a cover of a cover with the Ryan Adams acoustic version of Wonderwall. Following the relaxed vocal delivery to make the anthem much more fragile, the Edinburgh crowd just about keep up with the rework.

Before the applause fades, Supersonic is unleashed, the familiar Britpop swagger even more agreeable with the crowd, who he asks, for the first of a few times tonight, " Have you all got your Stone Roses tickets then?" Of course they do...

After a few newer songs, the reborn star, now a frontman serves up a full-band version of Talk Tonight and Half The World Away. Far from exuding the confidence of his brother, the gentler tracks have more sentiment with this delivery and are sung at full lung capacity by the Usher Hall.

Dragging the Oasis jukebox back across the stage for the encore, another three tracks from their back catalogue have the crowd just about throwing imaginary pints in the air. (The bar shut during the performance, hence all projectile ammunition was quickly spent on the hero's arrival).

Like a slightly more thoughtful Oasis, if you liked it first time round, you'd have been in your element tonight. On the other hand, if you were ever in doubt, a more polite version of the brand/ pleasant, folkier retirement home Oasis is not going to win you over Little By Little.

Noel Gallagher Met George Harrison At Country Bonfire

Noel Gallagher got the chance to tell Beatles star George Harrison just what he meant to him as the two stars chatted about guitar great Carl Perkins at a mutual friend's bonfire.

The former Oasis star is a huge fan of the Fab Four and fondly recalls sitting on a log next to Harrison at a country party.

He tells Rolling Stone magazine, "It happened to be on the property that backed onto George's house. So I'm sitting on a log and this guy with a beard and a denim jacket comes up to me and says, 'Hey, you want a Heineken?'

"I was like, 'F**king hell!' We talked about Carl Perkins and I told him he was my favourite guitar player."

Harrison died shortly after the meeting in 2001.

Noel Gallagher Owes Johnny Marr A Fortune In Rent

Noel Gallagher owes fellow British rocker Johnny Marr thousands of dollars after staying rent-free at The Smiths star's home for two years.

Guitarist Marr owns an apartment in London and let Gallagher live there after the property became vacant in the mid-1990s.

But he couldn't face charging his pal rent and taking on landlord duties - so he allowed Gallagher to stay at the home for free.

Marr tells Fantastic Man magazine, "I had a place in London up until about '97, '98 when Noel Gallagher vacated it, because I'd let him borrow it for a couple of years. I couldn't be bothered being anyone's landlord... I think he owes me a lot in back rent. At what, £2,000 a week?"

Indeed, his new album conforms so precisely to the preconceived notion of what a solo Noel Gallagher album would sound like you half suspect the whole project may one day be outed as some high-concept prank.

The Who's Quadrophenia Exhibition Launches At Pretty Green Carnaby Street

Last night saw the launch of The Who's Quadrophenia exhibition at our flagship store in Carnaby Street.

The night kicked off with a scooter rally down the famous Carnaby Street walk after which guests were allowed into the store to explore the never seen before exhibition.
The Pretty Green Carnaby Street store showcases Pete Townshend's archives of notes, desk diaries, photos and original lyrics from the making of Quadrophenia alongside album artwork and outages. Also a replica Vespa PX has been made to look like the legendary GS from the album shoot.

The exhibition is now open to public (free entry) at the Pretty Green Carnaby Street store (57 Carnaby Street, London, W1F 9QF) and will be available for viewing until 31st January 2012.
