Roger Daltrey Would Like Noel Gallagher To Take Charge Of Organising The Teenage Cancer Trust Concerts

The Who‘s Roger Daltrey has revealed that in a few years he’s hoping to ‘hand over the reigns’ of booking Teenage Cancer Trust gigs to ‘one of the younger mob’ – and he’s considering Noel Gallagher.

This year marks the 17th anniversary of Teenage Cancer Trust gigs being held at the Royal Albert Hall – seeing likes of Muse, Arctic Monkeys, Suede, Depeche Mode and many more all perform in aid of the charity. Daltrey and bandmate Pete Townsend have been involved in putting the gigs together every year. However, it looks like he’s thinking about passing the baton on to someone else in 2020.

“I’d like to do 20 years and that’d be enough for me,” Daltrey told NME. “I’ll probably hand it over to Noel [Gallagher] or someone. One of the younger mob.”

He continued: “I think in three years time, it’ll be time for me to hand over to er to find someone else to pick up my reigns.  I’m sure there’ll be someone be there to do it. I will warn them that it’s much more work than they’d think it is. But it’s the most rewarding work that you’ll ever do, not financially or in anything like that, but it fills you up with something money can’t buy. It’s amazing.”

Graham Coxon Praises Noel Gallagher's "Fine Voice"

The Blur guitarist went to see Gallagher support The Who last night and said he was in "fine voice".

Graham Coxon has praised Noel Gallagher's acoustic set at the Royal Albert Hall last night (30 March).

The Blur guitarist went to watch The Who's Teenage Cancer Trust gig, where he saw his former Britpop rival Gallagher play support.

Taking to Twitter, the Coffee And TV rocker wrote: "Noel was in fine voice and the who were brilliantz.. nite."

Noel Gallagher's set included Oasis favourites, such as Wonderwall and Don't Look Back in anger, which was captured by Radio X's very own Gordon Smart.

The praise from the Blur man will no doubt act as fighting talk for Noel's estranged brother Liam, who vowed to sing Don't Look Back In Anger "bigger" and "better" when he embarks on his solo tour.

Starkey is the fourth drummer for the rock band The Who, playing with them live and occasionally in the studio. He is also known as being the third drummer for the English rock band Oasis. New Oasis Documentary Will Feature Infamous Newcastle Gig

An upcoming documentary on Oasis will feature a 'riot' that broke out at their Newcastle show in 1994. Were you there?

They were the biggest band of the 1990s, fronted by two Mancunian brothers who were as opinionated as they were talented.

Now, a major new documentary on Oasis, the rock’n’roll band that defined a generation, is under production and the makers want your help in recalling a notorious Newcastle gig in 1994.

Hannah Green, who is working on the documentary, said: “It will cover their beginnings in the basement of the Boardwalk to their landmark concerts at Knebworth in 1996. We have the full support of Noel and Liam Gallagher.

“We’re currently after footage or photographs from the band’s infamous gig on August 9 at the Riverside, where supposedly a member of the audience threw a punch at Noel and a massive riot ended up breaking out.

“We are able to pay for any material used”.

Oasis were at the forefront of the Britpop movement, which heavily evoked music from three decades earlier by groups like The Beatles, The Who and The Small Faces.

During 1995-96, the group were at the peak of their powers, scoring classic hit singles like Wonderwall and Don’t Look Back In Anger, while their album Definitely Maybe was one of the finest of the decade.

The Gallagher brothers were, though, fond of the odd feud – falling out with each other, Brtipop rivals Blur, and Take That’s Robbie Williams, among others, all of which was meat and drink to the daily tabloids.

Back on August 9, 1994, Oasis were a relatively unknown, up-and-coming indie band when a brawl at a low-key Newcastle gig made headlines in the Chronicle.

The band were making their third appearance at the city’s Riverside club, and the football-related banter between the Manchester City-supporting Liam and Noel Gallagher and Newcastle United fans in the audience was ramping up the tension.

All hell broke loose when an audience member tried to climb on stage, then stumbled on to Noel, causing the guitarist to accidentally hit himself with his instrument, causing a nasty gash on his face.

(It was later suggested Noel was more concerned his guitar might be damaged - an instrument that had once belonged to The Who’s Pete Townshend and was on loan from Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr).

The band stormed off stage with singer Liam returning, brandishing a microphone stand, and snarling “no-one hits our kid” as the crowd chanted “soft as *****”.

The Daily Mail reported the show had descended into an ‘orgy of violence’, while the Chronicle also covered the incident.

We reported: “A band tipped for stardom were caught up in a brawl with their audience as they kicked off their national tour in Newcastle.

“Noel Gallagher, from the pop group Oasis, needed stitches after being attacked on stage at the Riverside.

“Others from the five-strong band, which includes his brother Liam, piled on top of the man and allegedly hit him, before the audience joined in.”

Our report went on to say the band had refused to return after getting only five numbers into the show and fans had swarmed the stage. The group managed to escape to their waiting van, but were besieged by chanting fans. Oasis later issued a statement, apologising for ending the show early, but said that Gallagher had been bleeding heavily.

“The actions of one lunatic have ruined it for the rest,” the statement read.

In the years after the brawl, Oasis returned successfully to the region on several occasions and they remain hugely popular.

They split in 2009 after increasing acrimony between the Gallagher brothers and formed separate bands, but you wouldn’t rule out the pair sharing a stage together again one day.

Did you see Oasis at Newcastle Riverside on August 9, 1994? Do you have any footage or pictures from the gig? Or do you have any interesting Oasis or Riverside memorabilia from this time?

The producers of the upcoming documentary will pay for content used.

Liam Gallagher Forms Supergroup With The Who's Roger Daltrey

Liam Gallagher and The Who frontman Roger Daltrey are forming a supergroup for the upcoming TFI Friday comeback episode.

TFI Friday will return for a one-off live special at 9pm next Friday (June 12), hosted by Chris Evans.

A TFI spokesman has confirmed to NME that Gallagher and Daltrey will perform 'My Generation' as part of a supergroup featuring The Lightning Seeds' Ian Broudie and former Oasis drummer (and Ringo Starr's son) Zak Starkey.

"Liam's got a bit of time on his hands since Beady Eye called it a day last year so he fancied trying his hand at something new," a 'source' also told The Sun. "He's told his mates he's pretty bored. Other than Noel, you would be hard pushed to find a better set of bandmates than Roger, Ian and Zak. It's a proper supergroup and the performance will be something to remember."

The yet-unnamed will be joined by fellow musical guests Blur, Stone Roses and Primal Scream bassist Mani, Rudimental and Years & Years. It's not yet known whether the Gallagher-Daltrey-Broudie-Starkey supergroup will play any further shows following the TFI Friday performance.

Meanwhile, Liam Gallagher has discussed his recent involvement in a charity football match in Italy. Gallagher appeared alongside a number of former Juventus players like Alessandro Del Piero and Pavel Nedved at the Juventus Stadium in Torino on Tuesday night (June 2). The match was organised by the Italian equivalent of Soccer Aid.

Speaking about the event, Gallagher has since said: "The invitation to take part came from an old friend of mine Andrea Dulio who used to work for Sony Italy whom I knew throughout the Oasis era."

Gallagher added: "I’ve played a few in my time with the mighty Oasis but never football. I must say I was a little nervous in front of 45,000 crazy Italians... I’m not sure what was said at half time as I was on the piss around that time as I was substituted 20 minutes into the game much to my delight as I was fucked," Gallagher told The Secret Footballer. "I do run most days but I haven’t had a proper kickabout since 1999."

More Noel Gallagher At Glastonbury Rumours

Tabloid reports today (May 2) suggest that The Who will be announced as the third, and final, of this year's Glastonbury headliners.

Speculation about the third headline act for this year's festival has increased in recent weeks with the name yet to be announced. It was previously announced that Foo Fighters and Kanye West will headline the Friday and Saturday nights of the festival respectively.

However, The Sun has today reported that it will be The Who that close this year's festival and that they will be joined on the line-up by either Noel Gallagher or Paul Weller performing in the slot directly before them.

A "festival insider" is reported to have told the newspaper that: "The Who booking has been kept quiet because the band are also playing a Hyde Park gig for the British Summer Time festival so the announcement will be made in a few weeks. The band are still one of the best live groups and are currently on their 50th-anniversary tour, so it’s bound to be an amazing show."

"There’ll also be support from an artist like Paul Weller or Noel Gallagher. It will be a dream night for rock fans."

Roger Daltrey Praises Noel Gallagher's Support For The 'Teenage Cancer Trust'

Noel Gallagher was praised by Roger Daltrey for being such a ''loyal friend and loyal supporter'' of the Teenage Cancer Trust ahead of his concert on Saturday night (28.03.15).

The Who frontman came on stage at the Royal Albert Hall in London before the Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds show to pay tribute to the former Oasis guitarist for always being willing to play for the charity - which aims to improve the treatment of 13 to 24 year olds fighting cancer.

Introducing Noel, Roger - who was joined on stage by several young people helped by the UK organisation - said: ''Coming on soon is a very loyal friend and loyal supporter. He's been involved from the first day, just as Paul Weller has and Kelly Jones. On in a few minutes Noel Gallagher.''

Noel and his band stepped on stage to a rapturous reception from the sell-out crowd and opened with 'Do The Damage'.

The musician's set was packed with tracks from his new number one album 'Chasing Yesterday' and highlights included 'Lock All The Doors', 'The Dying of the Light', 'You Know We Can't Go Back' and 'In the Heat of the Moment'.

Noel was joined on stage by a horn section and the Crouch End Festival Chorus, who accompanied him for several songs including 'Everybody's On The Run', 'If I Had a Gun...' and a stripped down version of Oasis classic 'Champagne Supernova' which prompted a mass sing-along from fans.

Although the set was mainly comprised of solo songs, the rocker did play a handful of tracks by his former band, including fan favourite B-side 'Fade Away' and 'Digsy's Dinner' - from the group's 1994 debut LP 'Definitely Maybe'.

At one point between songs one cheeky admirer approached the stage and asked Noel for his autograph, which prompted the 47-year-old singer to quip: ''Sign your ticket? I'm a bit busy mate at the moment.''

The group exited the stage briefly, whipping the crowd into a frenzied ''Noel, Noel, Noel'' chant before returning for their encore.

The rock superstar sent the audience delirious with a rendition of Oasis classic 'Don't Look Back in Anger' and followed it up with 'AKA... What a Life!' to cheers of delight.
Noel closed the concert with Oasis track 'The Masterplan' to which the crowd sang along with every word.

A number of famous fans were at the gig, including former 'Doctor Who' actor Matt Smith and Queens Park Rangers soccer player Joey Barton - who previously played for Noel's favourite team Manchester City.

Barton took his Twitter account during the show, posting: ''Masterplan... Wow... (sic)''

Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In London

Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds played a set which drew heavily from new album 'Chasing Yesterday' at London's Royal Albert Hall last night (March 28) as part of the Teenage Cancer Trust Concert gigs.

After playing Oasis' 'Fade Away' early in the set, Gallagher pointed to the direction of the rest of the set by saying: "It's Saturday night, this is a bit more like it. I'm going to play you some new songs off my fucking brilliant new album."

He then played a trio of new songs: 'In the Heat of the Moment', 'Lock All the Doors' and 'Riverman'. The Royal Albert Hall was completely sold out for the performance, and the crowd were vocal in their support of Gallagher's new music. In response to one fan shouting that he loved him, Gallagher replied: "I love you too. Did you buy an album? Did you buy a t-shirt? Did you buy a programme? Then I love you. And my wife loves you. And my kids definitely love you."

Despite the focus on new material, Gallagher did play a handful of Oasis songs. As well as 'Fade Away', he also performed 'Champagne Supernova', 'Digsy's Dinner', 'Don't Look Back In Anger' and closed with 'The Masterplan'.

Support on the night came from Baltimore synth-pop band Future Islands, who played a short set which featured last year's NME Song Of The Year 'Seasons (Waiting On You)'.

The Who frontman Roger Daltrey, who has raised £20 million from concerts for Teenage Cancer Trust victims over the last 15 years, was on hand to introduce Gallagher and to explain how the money raised by the charity event is spent.
