XL Video For Oasis

XL Video UK continues its long and creatively fruitful history with superstar UK rockers Oasis, supplying full video production for their ongoing "Dig Out Your Soul" world tour.

XL also supplied a fully HD PPU/camera package for the summer stadium and outdoor special shows on the itinerary.
XL is also supplying kit for a third variation on Oasis' video design - similar to but larger than the original touring version - for their festival headline slots.

Says XL's project manager Des Fallon, "Respect to the Oasis production management team lead by Michael O'Connor. Their attention to detail is second to none, they totally understand the importance of video and the role it plays in the show, and making things happen smoothly and efficiently in video world is very easy".

For the large shows XL Video is working both directly for Oasis and for live video director Dick Carruthers' company, Cheese Film & Video. The stadium show video is a vibrant mix of playback and IMAG which Carruthers - as is his oeuvre - uses as a platform to push the imaginative and technical horizons of the system.

Two amazing looking 8 mm Mitsubishi 8 mm screens stage left and right provide playback to the majority of the audience at the outdoor/stadium shows. Each measures 10 modules wide by 8 high and delivers stunning HD clarity.

Onstage, there are 5 columns of Barco MiTrix, each made up of 144 panels - a subtle increase to the 4 column arena touring version of the design. This 5 column MiTrix set up is also used for festivals.

Also integral to the original arena touring - and now the festival set up - are 4 standard definition robo-cams. These, together with the touring/festival content for the MiTrix surfaces - are operated by lighting designer Rob Gawler. XL is also supplying the 3 Catalyst media servers Gawler uses to feed content to the MiTrix, and the HD robo-cam units which are swapped in for the outdoor/stadium gigs.

On the outdoor shows, to enhance sight lines for sections of the audience positioned at extreme angles to the stage, XL is supplying 2 additional Lighthouse R7 left and right LED screens - each 5 panels wide and 4 high - offering a TX feed of the stage action. The stadium package is completed with one of XL Video's full HD PPUs including 6 Sony E50 HD broadcast quality cameras.

Dick Carruthers needs no introduction for his inventive and original approach to live video direction. The magic is in the mix!
He mixes the show from the FOH position, just behind the lighting desk, and has designed the video control set up for ultimate flexibility, with a central matrix at its hub to route any source to any destination.

The main Mitsubishi side screen IMAG mix from the 10 cameras (6 operated and 4 robos) is controlled via a Snell & Wilcox Kahuna console operated by Carruthers - a powerful console specified because it can mix numerous HD and SD sources and achieve complex DVE processing extremely fast, rendering material onscreen in real time.

At strategic moments, elements of the IMAG - usually treated/effected for added visual flavour and colour - is also output to the MiTrix Columns. Although there are some very precise cues, other elements of the mix are a fluid process which Carruthers evolves improv-style each night.
"Having all sources capable of being sent everywhere is a simple concept that's complex to achieve totally live," he explains. He creates some truly spectacular effects along the way, e.g. morphing the lava flow in "To Be Where There's Life" into facial close ups using the Kahuna's contour mapping facility.

There is massive imaginative scope in the system. A single image or camera feed can be output across 7 screens - like a sole audience shot during "Don't Look Back In Anger" making that high impact emotional connection that's so special to any live performance. At other times, it can be offbeat multi-snapshots from individual cameras mapped to individual screens for quirky, questioning looks.

Central to the show's video aesthetics is having movement on the cameras. There is a tracking dolly at FOH and another in the pit plus a jib, while 2 hand-helds oscillate between being onstage and offstage - everything is in a constant state of flux.

Also at FOH is a Barco Encore multi-screen system provided by XL and operated by Richard Turner. This is primarily for controlling the IMAG elements sent to the MiTrix screens and for interacting with Gawler's Catalyst generated playback footage.

A GV Kayak mixer/switcher is used as backup and a stills store. With all 3 console outputs - and Gawler's Catalysts also fed into the matrix, potentially the show could be controlled from any one.

An EVS machine is used for all the slomo effects, adding another layer of visual intricacy - and one that's proved a big hit with both band and production. "You have to be bold" is a key phrase in Carruthers' modus operandi - the EVS enables 'live' slomos that can be instantaneously cut to different screens in real time - right in the heat of the moment, as the vibe takes him.

The 3 Catalysts driven by Gawler's Hog 3 lighting console deal with all the playback material going onto the MiTrix columns, and are tied in with his lighting cues. This system functions independently for festivals and as the ongoing arena tour package. He also has a TX feed recording from the outdoor events which he can use for festivals. For the stadium/outdoor shows themselves, Gawler's playback footage and the robo-cam feeds are amalgamated with the various broadcast camera feeds via the Encore system, and Justine Catterall joins the FOH team providing additional playback production.

The striking appearance of the onscreen material has become a real talking point, and with many shows starting in daylight, the clarity of the output makes a big difference to audience enjoyment of the video elements throughout the entire show.

Des Fallon concludes, "Oasis have been at the top of their genre for over a decade and are still embracing fresh and innovative ideas and investing in high production values for their audience. It's great to be part of this".

Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, a fan of Manchester City, has said he does not want the club to sign Chelsea captain John Terry.

City have made a £30million bid for Terry, 28.

But Noel said: "I don't like John Terry. He's got funny eyes and he's a cry baby.

"He's also a Cockney and he'd absolutely be coming just for the money."

The Ten Best Rock'N'Roll Frontmen

Who are the best rock'n'roll frontmen of all time? Not solo artists but real frontmen - men that actually front bands. We choose some of our favourites.

01. Johnny Rotten of the Sex Pistols

Yes he's not very cool anymore, but 30 years ago Johnny Rotten was the snarling, sneering photogenic face of punk rock. His natural ability to (often literally) wear a load of rubbish and still look breathtaking combined with a voice that immediately captured the dark sarcasm of his lyrics.

02. Mick Jagger of The Rolling Stones

He may not have pioneered the hip swivelling, camp-as-a-row-of-tents frontmen approach (Little Richard and of course Esquerita got there 10 years earlier) but Jagger certainly made it his own. Mixing a voice that brings-to-mind the arrogance of grizzled old bluesmen, an off-stage reputation as a snobby twit and a dance resembling a chicken and Jagger is, for many, the ultimate frontman.

03. Jimi Hendrix of the Jimi Hendrix Experience

Hendrix's on-stage theatrics rarely overshadowed his immeasurable talent but it can't be denied that Hendrix was as much showman as he was musician. With a dress sense as good as his guitar playing, a reputation as something of a drugs dustbin and the ability to do with his guitar what Little Richard did with his vocals - Hendrix pretty much invented the rock'n'roll cliché. That so many have followed his path speaks volumes.

04. Marc Bolan of T Rex

Marc Bolan mixed the foppish persona of Mick Jagger with the voice and hair of Bob Dylan and the fashion of David Bowie when he helped to pioneer glam rock. Often dismissed as a tween pin-up, Bolan was in fact vital to reinforcing the ever-important teen divide in the early 1970s - making long hair, beards and flares the look of the establishment rather than the cosmic teenage rebels.

05. Iggy Pop of The Stooges

A true wildman of rock'n'roll, Iggy Pop (or James Newell Osterberg, Jr. as his mother knew him) took blues-inspired rock'n'roll to new levels in the late 1960s. After watching Jim Morrison (whose omission from this list is sure to be questioned) perform at the University of Michigan in 1967, Pop took his stage act to new extremes, rolling in glass, exposing himself and vomiting onstage. Without Pop, punk rock would not have developed as we know it.

06. Freddie Mercury of Queen

Freddie Mercury is another who aped Mick Jagger, although Mercury's performance was more outlandish in almost every way. His untrained voice was one of a kind, rolling from heavy rock baritone to soaring falsetto with ease, while image wise Liza Minnelli-inspired flamboyance was key.

07. Liam Gallagher of Oasis

Liam Gallagher is nothing but a frontman. His own songs are awful and his personality vacuous but when Liam Gallagher takes the stage something very silly and slightly magical happens. Forget his voice for a moment (which even the harshest critic couldn't deny is powerful and distinctive) when the man stands motionless on stage with a tambourine in his mouth, scowling at the audience you really can't take your eyes off him. You sort of hate him but you also kind of envy him. This is what a frontman is.

08. Bono of U2

Further proof that you don't need to like someone to recognise their talent as a frontman. Somehow, somehow, Bono has become even bigger than his band, meeting political leaders, making poverty history , editing The Independent for a day, saving the world. All the while he's managed to churn out the kind of atmospheric rock'n'roll that demands a theatrical frontman. He's even entered popular culture as a derisory term for an egotistical, overblown frontman. Johnny Borrell from Razorlight? He's a bit Bono isn't he.

09. Kurt Cobain of Nirvana

The classic doomed rock'n'roll frontman. Cobain was so punk rock that he killed himself because he didn't want to mislead fans into thinking he still found Nirvana fun. On top of that he wrote vicious, poetic lyrics and then screamed them unintelligibly over huge-sounding, pop-laced rock'n'roll. His legacy has ensured every year new waves of troubled young things rip their jeans and pick up a low slung guitar in his honour.

10. Joe Strummer of The Clash

Joe Strummer was a punk rocker with a heart a soul. While Johnny Rotten quickly became a cartoon anarchist, Strummer aimed for real revolution, showing his fans that rock'n'roll could be politically intellectual as well as nihilistically so. He also managed to inject blues, rockabilly, soul, folk and dub into The Clash's sound, all the while looking look Kenickie from Grease's cooler little brother.

Wonder-Wail For Some Oasis Fans

Hundreds of Oasis fans were left disappointed after 3,400 tickets to see the rock giants at Bridlington Spa were snapped up within minutes.

Tickets for the August 20 concert sold out almost instantly over the internet yesterday, with sales hotlines jammed throughout the morning.

Dozens of fans camped outside the venue on Tuesday night in a bid to get hold of tickets for next month's gig when they went on sale at the box office at 10am.

First in the queue were sisters Lauren, 21, and 19-year-old Abbie Jamieson, of Westgate, Bridlington, who settled in their spot outside the Spa main entrance at 3pm on Tuesday.

Lauren said: "It's definitely worth it. The atmosphere will be great as it's such a small venue for Oasis. I just can't wait"

Their friend Charlotte Taylor, 21 of Flamborough, also camped overnight and said the atmosphere in the queue was fantastic.

She said: "A lad had a guitar and there were lots of sing-alongs – all Oasis songs obviously!"

But many fans were left empty-handed when the Spa began turning away fans shortly after 11am, despite them queuing for hours.

Richard Smith, of Bridlington, joined the queue at 4am yesterday and was left "gutted" after being turned away empty-handed.

"I was about three metres away from the front when they started telling us they'd sold out. I was absolutely gutted. There were people pushing in all over the place, surely the Spa could've got some security or a ticket-slip system to deal with it," he said.

"They should've given everyone in the queue a numbered ticket or something so that they could hand it over when they got to the box office."

Oasis Tickets Latest: Council Issues Statement

East Riding of Yorkshire Council has issued the following statement following criticisms about today's sale of tickets for the Oasis concert at Bridlington Spa next month.

"The Spa Bridlington experienced unprecedented demand for the Oasis concert with tickets selling out within 90 minutes.

"It is a credit to the professionalism of everyone involved with The Spa that the venue is able to attract artistes of this calibre.

"Some tickets were available from the venue while the majority were allocated for national sales.

"Tickets were made valuable on a first come, first served basis and a maximum of four tickets per person, with some fans camping out overnight.

"Queueing was in the main orderly with staff and barriers ensuring that tickets were allocated fairly.

"We understand the disappointment of anyone who didn't get tickets but hope those who did will enjoy the concert."

Oasis' Noel Gallagher: 'Days Of Blur Rivalry Have Long Gone'

Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher has said the days of the band's bitter Britpop rivalry with Blur are over.

Various music publications have attempted to re-ignite the feud this year following Blur's decision to reform.

But in a message on Oasis' website, Gallagher said he hoped both band's members had “grown up a little” since the mid-90s.

TV presenter Jonathan Ross attempted to question the guitarist about the era on his radio show last Saturday.

However, Gallagher, who pre-recorded the show on the Friday, refused to respond negatively to Ross' questions.

Writing about the interview, Gallagher said: “He's a naughty boy, Jonathan. He was determined to try and get me to have a pop at the Blur re-union. Not this time.

“Those days are long gone. Although it was fun at the time I'd like to think we've all grown up a little bit since then. He has, and it was funny though.”

Oasis played a sold-out show at the Eden Project in Cornwall last night.

The gig followed their three-night concert residency at London's Wembley Stadium last weekend.

Noel Gallagher: 'Jonathan Ross Is A Naughty Boy'

Noel Gallagher has called broadcaster Jonathan Ross a "naughty boy" after he tried to get him to insult Blur following their recent reunion.

The Oasis guitarist wrote on his blog that he was no longer interested in the rivalry both bands shared during the 1990s.

Gallagher said: "Went and done an interview with Johnny Ross. He's a naughty boy, Jonathan. He was determined to try and get me to have a pop at the Blur reunion. Not this time.

"Those days are long gone. Although it was fun at the time I'd like to think we've all grown up a little bit since then. He has, and it was funny though."

Gallagher has previously said that he had heard the Blur comeback gigs had gone well, while he admitted that the reunion would be exciting for fans of the band.

Oasis To Kick Off Benicassim Festival In Spain

British rock band Oasis was on Thursday due to open the 15th edition of the Benicassim festival, one of Europe's biggest annual music gatherings, in eastern Spain.

Tens of thousands of music fans were expected in the Mediterranean resort town north of Valencia for the event, which lasts until Sunday and features about 100 concerts.

Other acts scheduled to perform included Grammy-winning US foursome the Kings of Leon, Scottish band Franz Ferdinand and British pop singer Lily Allen.

The electronica and alternative pop rock music festival has been held each year since 1995. It also features short films, theatre and dance performances.

Last year the festival drew over 148,000 people over its four days, with a huge amount of participants coming from outside of Spain.

Oasis Brave The Rain To Play Rescheduled Eden Project Gig

'Get orf my laaand!' intones Noel Gallagher to the Cornish audience

Oasis played Cornwall's Eden Project last night (July 14), taking to the stage as the heavens opened.

The rescheduled gig was originally due to take place last September, but was postponed after Noel Gallagher was attacked and injured onstage in Toronto.

Coming onstage after support act Howard Eliot Payne, Oasis were introduced by Eden Project's event manager, who praised the band for their persistence in endeavouring to honour the gig. He also asked the crowd not to "piss on the plants" of the renowned greenhouse on their way out.

Playing exactly the same set as their final Wembley Stadium gig on Sunday (July 12), the band showcased material stretching right back to their 1994 debut album 'Definitely Maybe'.

Oasis also gave a shout out to Cornwall's Sawmills Studio (where 'Definitely Maybe' was part-recorded), dedicating 'Cigarettes And Alcohol' to the riverside complex.

After playing a Noel Gallagher-sung version of 'Whatever', the chief songwriter feigned disappointment that much of the crowd didn't seem to know the song's lyrics.

"It still amazes me how little you lot know the words to that song," he joked, adding "I'm the only one in the whole building that does and I didn't even buy it!"

Before playing the first song of Oasis' encore, 'Falling Down', Gallagher geed up the crowd by getting them to chant "Get off my land!" in a Cornish accent.

Writing on his Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere blog before the gig, the guitarist revealed he'd had to endure an arduous train journey down to the south west for the gig.

"Am currently on a train in Devon heading to the Eden Project. Doing that gig we had to cancel last August!! I must go as I need to strangle a child that's been crying all the way from London!"

Oasis Fans' Disappointment Over 'Ticket Farce'

Elation and despair were the overwhelming feelings amongst hundreds of Oasis fans queuing for tickets outside Bridlington Spa this morning.

Those lucky enough to bag a golden ticket to the one-off intimate gig next month were over the moon, but many fans were left unhappy that after hours of queuing they still left the venue empty-handed.

Richard Smith of Redwood Way joined the queue at 4am this morning and was left 'gutted' after being turned away empty-handed.

"I was about three meters away from the front when they started telling us they'd sold out.

"I was absolutely gutted. There were people pushing in all over the place, surely the Spa could've got some security or a ticket-slip system to deal with it.

"They should've given everyone in the queue a numbered ticket or something so that they could hand it over when they got to the box office.

"It's a simple thing and would've meant all those who'd queued for hours would've got a ticket."

Kerry Tipping had travelled across from Hornsea to be in the queue for 5am and did not get a ticket.

"It's disgusting," she said. "When we joined the queue, we counted just 150 people in front of us, yet we still didn't get a ticket.
"How does that work?"

Suzanne Morley, whose son and daughter also queued for hours and came away empty-handed, said that the whole thing was 'a farce'.

She was upset that hundreds of tickets were sold on the internet, leaving those queuing out in the cold

"There are a lot of unhappy people today some who have queued since 2am this morning and not got any tickets," she said.

Tickets for the August 20 concert went on sale at 10am but sold out within minutes over the internet, with sales hotlines being jammed
throughout the morning.

Ticketmaster sold out by 10.30am and the Spa had to turn away fans shortly after 11am.

Oasis Tickets Sold Out For Bridlington Gig

Less than half an hour after tickets went on sale, fans are reporting that Oasis' Bridlington gig has sold out.

The £44.50 tickets are already for sale on auction website eBay, but one fan who tried to buy on the phone and online said: "It impossible to buy through booking agents. All say sold out if you try to book on line and all numbers are engaged.

"The 0871 numbers get a BT announcement saying how busy the network is."

Fans have been queuing overnight in heavy rain outside the Spa to secure their places at the August 20 gig.
