To Beer Or Not To Beer?

What ho! Noel Gallagher swapped cigarettes and alcohol for a jolly good night at the theatre.

The grumpy guitarist slipped on a posh cardigan to see his thesp mate, Jude Law, 36, star in Hamlet at London’s Wyndham theatre.

But in true Oasis style, the 42-year-old rocker was spotted looking plastered after the curtain had fallen.

Either Jude’s performance was totally mind-blowing or naughty Noel sneaked some Special Brew into the stalls.

Police Drug Warning Over V Festival

Revellers are being warned not to take drugs to this year’s V Festival on the Shropshire/Staffordshire border or they will face court action.

A condition of entry to the festival at Weston Park, near Shifnal, means that all festival-goers must allow themselves to be searched by police or security staff. Police, using drugs dogs, and stewards will be searching people as they enter the site for the festivities from August 21 to 24.

Chief Inspector Vera Bloor, from the tactical support department at Staffordshire Police, said: “Drugs aren’t welcome at V. If you take them, or deal in them, we’ll catch you and prosecute you.”

Anyone found in possession of drugs will be arrested. They will have to provide a DNA sample and have their fingerprints taken which will be kept on the police national database.

A mobile drugs laboratory and a laptop drugs-identifying machine will help officers quickly establish the type of substances seized and offenders could then be put before the next available court.

Chief Inspector Bloor said: “We work closely with the organisers to ensure that the event is a safe and enjoyable experience for everyone.

“It is renowned for being one of the safest in this country and we will continue to make it even safer for festival-goers and members of the local community.”

Police nationally have recovered fake drugs at concerts and found plaster-of-paris pills being sold as ecstasy and a drug called chloroquine, used to treat malaria, being sold as cocaine.

Chief Inspector Bloor added: “Obviously these fake drugs could be extremely harmful and even life-threatening. Anyone caught with fake drugs will risk arrest, being put before a court and could face a prison sentence.

“It is also important for people entering or leaving the site to remember that driving under the influence of drink or drugs puts lives at risk.”

Anyone with information on drugs at the festival is urged to report it by going to the police post on site, or by texting vfest (then message) to 07929 30 20 10, or calling confidentially through Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.

Last Chance To Vote For Oasis As MTV's Greatest Superstar

1981: The year that saw the demise of Punk, the birth of New Romanticism, the rise of the CD, the death of Bob Marley, and John Lennon’s message for “the world to live as one” top the charts world-wide with the posthumously-released classic, Imagine.

It was also the year a new musical revolution rocked the planet - THE LAUNCH OF MTV.

From the moment Buggles' Video Killed the Radio Star ushered in the world’s first dedicated music channel, nothing would be the same again.

New musical superstars such as Madonna and Def Leppard were introduced and MTV would go on to single-handedly help create and break entire movements like 80s hair metal, hip-hop, grunge, nu-metal and Britpop to name but a few.

But who’s been the biggest act to find global fame, chart success and fan worship since that very launch in ’81? We're asking you to vote for your Greatest Superstar.

Oasis: 'V Festival Is Always Our Favourite'

With a couple of weeks to go until their headline slot at V Festival, Oasis have revealed that the festival is their favourite to play.
During an interview with Eleanor Conway, the band - minus the Gallagher brothers - also fuelled their ongoing feud with Glastonbury branding festival-goers ‘yoghurt weavers’.

Speaking to Conway, bassist Andy Bell admitted, “[V Festival is] always our favourite actually, I’m not just saying that it really is.” When asked why they prefer V Festival to the likes of Glastonbury, Bell answered, “It’s the audience, it’s our audience really, it’s our people.”

Guitarist Gem Archer then interrupted saying he prefers V Festival because it is “louder for a start,” before he's heard to say, “yogurt weavers.” When asked what he meant, Archer replied, “you know, farmers - people who weave yoghurts,” referring to Glastonbury-goers.

Oasis Star Liam Gallagher Is A Fab Babysitter

Most parents would surely think twice before leaving their children in the care of Liam Gallagher.

The Oasis rocker has two kids, nine-year-old Lennon by ex-wife Patsy Kensit, and Gene, eight, by current missues Nicole Appleton.

But I had the Manc singer down as most likely to subscribe to the Frank Gallagher from Shameless school of parenting. Not so.

Nicole's pal from their All Saints days, Shaznay Lewis, says Liam's a natural with kids, including her three-year-old, Tyler.

Shaznay, expecting again in the autumn, told Closer mag: "Liam is a fantastic babysitter. When our kids get together, he takes charge. He's amazing with children, they love him."

Move over, Supernanny.

On This Day In Oasis History...

It's 13 years to the day that Oasis played in front of a combined audience of 250,000 at two huge outdoor shows at Knebworth on August 10 and 11 1996.

The band sold out both shows within minutes; 250,000 people over two nights (2.5 million people applied for tickets, and 375,000 were actually sold, meaning the possibility of 53 sold out nights), at the time a record-breaking number for an outdoor concert held in the UK, and to this day the largest demand for a show in British history.

Liam Gallagher Phones His Dog From Los Angeles

If reincarnation is for real then you could do worse than be reborn as a celebrity pooch.

Just look at the pampered existence of Liam Gallagher and Nicole Appleton’s 18-month-old daschund, Ruby.

So treasured is she, Ruby gets phone calls from her barking owners when they are away on holiday.

Liam, 36, and Nicole, 34, are in LA at the moment.

So when Nic’s fellow All Saints lovelies Mel Blatt and Natalie Appleton entered the pup into a competition while babysitting at the weekend, the besotted couple were on the other end of the dog and bone the whole way through the event.

Nat even held her mobile up to the creature’s ear so “mummy and daddy” could comfort Ruby during her ordeal.

We can’t imagine Liam suffering from stage fright but he tried to be the understanding “parent” anyway.

Mel, 34, and Nicole’s big sister Nat, 36, entered the cherished dog in the prettiest female category of the Pup Idol competition, which was being held at Garden Gate pub in London’s Hampstead.

Sadly, the well-preened pet was just not gorgeous enough to win the title and lost out on the crowning glory to – horror of horrors – a stray.

How rude.

Did they not know who she was?

The All Sainters were not best impressed by Ruby getting snubbed.

Mel jokingly moaned: “It’s crappy Pup Idol. More like Sh*t Idol. It’s a fix!”

Dancing On Ice star Jeremy Edwards, 38, also entered the love of his life into the competition – his Boston terrier, Molly.

The black and white canine cutie has become a familiar feature in London parks and has even been known to proudly display a diamanté collar and tiny little dog suits.

Hmm.

On second thoughts, maybe it wouldn’t be so smart to be reincarnated as a celeb hound.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Live Forever" is a song by British rock group Oasis. Written by guitarist Noel Gallagher, the song was released as the third single from their debut album Definitely Maybe on 8 August 1994, just prior to that album's release.

Gallagher wrote the song in 1991, before he joined Oasis. Inspired by The Rolling Stones' "Shine a Light," "Live Forever" features a basic song structure and lyrics with an optimistic outlook that contrasted with the attitude of the grunge bands popular at the time. The song was the first Oasis single to enter the top ten in the United Kingdom, and garnered critical acclaim.

Background and recording

Noel Gallagher wrote "Live Forever" in 1991, while working for a building company in his hometown of Manchester. After his foot was crushed by a pipe in an accident, he was given a less-strenuous job working in the storeroom, allowing him more time to write songs. One night he was listening to The Rolling Stones' album Exile on Main St. While playing one of his own chord progressions, Gallagher noted that it sounded good against one of the vocal melodies from the album: "It was the bit from 'Shine a Light' that goes [sings], 'May the good lord shine a light on you,'" Gallagher recalled. Gallagher incorporated the melody, changing the line to "Maybe I don’t really want to know". For a period afterwards, that was the only part of the song Gallagher had completed.

The song was later instrumental in helping the band secure their record deal with Creation Records. Reflecting on when he first heard the song, Creation boss Alan McGee recalled "It was probably the single greatest moment I've ever experienced with them."

The demo version of "Live Forever" begins with an acoustic guitar intro. While recording the album version, the record's producer Owen Morris cut out this intro and replaced it with a drumbeat played by Tony McCarroll. Morris further cut a second section in Noel's guitar solo. Although Gallagher was upset, Morris felt the part had sounded "a bit like fucking Slash from Guns N' Roses".

Reception

"Live Forever" was released on 8 August 1994 as the band's third single, a month before the release of their debut album Definitely Maybe. The song had been part of the band's set for longer than a year at that point, and had amassed so many mentions in reviews of the group that "its release [as a single] had long seemed inevitable." In its review of the single, NME found "Live Forever" to be an improvement over Oasis' previous singles, concluding, "Basically, what thus far looked like obnoxious Manc arrogance suddenly looks like sheer effortlessness. A terrific record."

While Oasis' first two singles, "Supersonic" and "Shakermaker", were modestly received, it was "Live Forever" that "got the world's attention." "Live Forever" became Oasis' first top ten hit, reaching number ten on the British singles charts in 1994. In 1995, the song became the band's first chart success in the United States, reaching number two and ten on Billboard's Modern Rock Tracks and Mainstream Rock Tracks charts, respectively.[8] Noel Gallagher commented on the praise given to the song: "People said to me after 'Live Forever', 'Where are you gonna go after that?' And I was like, I don't think it's that good. I think it's a fucking good song, but I think I can do better."

"Live Forever" has garnered additional acclaim years after its release. In 2006, "Live Forever" was named the greatest song of all time in a poll released by Q; the song had ranked ninth in a similar Q poll three years before.[9] In 2007, "Live Forever" placed number one in the NME and XFM poll of the 50 "Greatest Indie Anthems Ever".[10] The song was selected by Noel Gallagher for inclusion on Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks in 2006.

Music videos

Two music videos were made for "Live Forever" for British and American airplay. The original video, directed by Carlos Grasso, features unusual imagery such as Liam Gallagher sitting on a chair affixed to a wall, and a number of scenes are devoted to the band burying drummer Tony McCarroll alive. Some of the UK version of the promotional video was filmed at the Strawberry Fields memorial, the area of New York City's Central Park dedicated to John Lennon—the single cover features 251 Menlove Avenue, the childhood home of Lennon. The American video, directed by Nick Egan, features the band playing in an office with pictures of Sid Vicious, Kurt Cobain, Jim Morrison, John Lennon, Brian Jones, Jimi Hendrix, Marc Bolan, and Bobby Moore on the wall. Both videos are included on the 2004 Definitely Maybe DVD.

New Order Fallout: 'Like A Fat Blur And Oasis', Says Peter Hook

Peter Hook has ruled out the possibility of New Order reuniting.

Speaking to The Quietus, he revealed that it was unlikely he and former bandmate Bernard Sumner would be able to repair their fractured relationship after New Order split up two years ago.

"There is no current situation [with New Order]", he said. "We split up two years ago. For a while Bernard seemed to be a bit confused about that but now, from what I gather, he's accepted it.

"In my mind, Bernard spilt us up in '92 when he went off with Johnny Marr, and I split us up this time. All we have to wait for is when we get back together is hopefully for Stephen to split us up and we’ll all be even."

He added: "I think there would have to be a terrible lot of blood letting. It’s been very... it's been the messiest divorce I’ve ever had, let’s put it that way."

Hook also commented on the fact that his new band, Freebass, are set to go head to head with Bad Lieutenant, the group started by the remainding members of New Order.

"It’s a very strange position to be in, especially with the fact that we’ve both got records coming out together at the same time", he said.

"It’s very weird. But it’s exciting. It’s a bit like a fat version of Blur and Oasis."

Check The Quietus next week for the full interview: Freebase, Joy Division, Manchester, and more New Order.
