Gem recently joined Paul Weller on stage for the launch of his new album 'Wake Up The Nation' with a storming set at the Relentless Garage in London.

Playing to a packed venue, Weller's set mixed new material with old classics as well as some of The Jam's back catalogue

Gem took to the guitar during a rousing rendition of The Jam's anthem 'Start!', while the night was closed with an encore of 'Come On Let's Go' and 'Pieces Of A Dream'.

Noel Gallagher: I Was Italy's Lucky Mascot At World Cup 2006

Former Oasis man also reveals 'secret' about New Order's 'World In Motion'

Noel Gallagher has claimed he was a lucky mascot for Italy during their successful FIFA World Cup campaign in 2006.

Discussing his memories of the tournament on BBC's Football Focus programme, the former Oasis man revealed Azzurri player Alessandro Del Piero - a friend of Gallagher - believed he was a lucky charm for the side at the tournament.

The superstition started when Del Piero scored the winner for Italy in the semi-final of the tournament against Germany and ran towards Gallagher to celebrate.

"I was sat beside his wife. His wife reckons he was coming over to blow kisses at her, but what's actually happened is he's seen me and his wife happened to be there," Gallagher joked.

"He then gets it in his head that I'm his lucky mascot, so he said: 'You'll have to come to the final'. He made me wear the same clothes," he added.

Gallagher also claimed that New Order's 'World In Motion' - released to coincide with the 1990 World Cup - wasn't originally supposed to be a football song.

"They didn't write it specifically for that, I know for a fact it was just a song they had lying round and added a few words to," he said.

"I don't care what anybody says, the New Order song isn't really a World Cup song."

The full interview with Gallagher can be viewed on the BBC Sport website.

Paul Weller On The Oasis Split

Paul Weller once again discussed the Oasis split during a interview with The Independent, claiming Noel and Liam Gallagher were "going through the motions" before the band ended last year.

"I don't want to talk out of turn because I love Noel and Liam," he said. "You can see when someone's not happy. But I guess when you get to that sort of level and there's big business involved, it's harder to stop. I think ultimately it'll be better for music and for their own creativity."

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Some Might Say" is a song by British rock band Oasis and was released on the 24th April 1995.

The song was written by the band's lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It was the first single to be released from their definitive second album (What's the Story) Morning Glory ? in 1995, and provided the band with their first #1 in the UK Singles Chart.

The track was apparently inspired by the Small Faces and/or T-Rex. It was the last Oasis track to feature original drummer Tony McCarroll, who was asked to leave the band before the main recording sessions for (What's the Story) Morning Glory ? when tensions arose between McCarroll and the Gallagher brothers. The rest of the tracks on the album feature Alan White on drums.

The sleeve artwork, shot at Cromford railway station in Derbyshire, England, features art director Brian Cannon's father with wheelbarrow and his mother with mop. Also pictured are Matthew Sankey, Cannon's aide and Carla Knox, barmaid of his local pub. Liam Gallagher can be seen on the bridge whilst Noel can be viewed with a watering can. Cannon himself rates this piece amongst his greatest works.

The planned promo video for the song was canceled due to Liam not turning up for the shoot. Instead, a makeshift video was created using footage from the "Cigarettes & Alcohol" and US "Supersonic" videos.

B-sides
Aside from the title song, the single boasts some of Oasis' finest B-sides, all of which were deemed worthy to grace the critically acclaimed Masterplan album. "Talk Tonight", is one of many acoustic B-side tracks sung by Noel, and was, at the time, the most vulnerable song he had attempted. It was inspired by the near-breakup of the band in Los Angeles in autumn 1994, when Noel walked out without telling anyone and headed for San Francisco.

The B-side "Acquiesce" was released as part of the Stop the Clocks EP in promotion their compilation album, Stop the Clocks.

In an interview promoting the compilation album, Stop the Clocks, Noel stated that "Some Might Say" is the "archetypical Oasis song' and 'defines what Oasis is". Noel added later in the interview that along with "Some Might Say", its b-side, "Acquiesce", was also the song that defined Oasis.

The song also appears on Stop the Clocks, as do two of the b-sides. Suprisingly, this means that the "Some Might Say" single contains the fourth largest number of tracks to appear on Stop the Clocks of any Oasis release (after Definitely Maybe, Morning Glory and The Masterplan). Therefore, more songs from this single ended up on Stop the Clocks than Don't Believe the Truth (2 songs), Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, Heathen Chemistry (1 song each) and Be Here Now (no songs from this album appear on Stop the Clocks).

"Some Might Say" is a playable track in both Guitar Hero World Tour and The European version of Guitar Hero On Tour: Decades.

18 Years Of Oasis Documentary Needs Your Stories

For an up and coming documentary celebrating 18 years of Oasis, we want to hear your stories of the moments that defined your experience as a fan…

Whether it was that faithful night at Knebworth where you met your wife to the sound of Definitely Maybe, or how you were one of the first to see the potential behind the phenomenon after listening to Supersonic at an early gig that changed your life. We want to know how the key moments in your life were played out to a soundtrack of Oasis songs that have resonated in your head ever since…

We’re hoping to tell the 18 years story of Oasis from the fans perspective, so we’d like to hear your stories from any point in Oasis’ career so far upto and including the present day. Each story will ideally relate to your experience of a certain song and how it came to mean something significant for your own very personal reason. Stories can be big and small, happy or sad, emotional, inspiring, incredible or hilarious… but above all personal and referring to an experience that’s unique to you. Ideally we’re looking for stories we can get our teeth into: locations we can revisit; the story of an obsession that has persisted to this day; of how your family has come to be defined by Oasis… Stories we can explore in more than simply one line of dialogue…

A number of successful stories will be invited to take part in the film, which might for example involve revisiting Knebworth, or traveling back to relive the holiday of a lifetime that you’ll forever associate with Champagne Supernova…

Anyone interested should contact Pulse Films – sending through contact details and a summary of your story to oasis@pulsefilms.co.uk

All weekend, we’ll be taking a wide legged swagger down memory lane and dedicating our schedule to Britpop. Yes, that is likely to include bangers by Elastica, Kula Shaker, Bluetones and, yes, Menswear.

The Live Hour at 9pm on Sunday will also be devoted to our beloved mid-90s indie heroes. Hear songs from the legendary Oasis performance at Knebworth in 1996, Blur’s reunion shows in Hyde Park last year and Supergrass from Oxford’s Zodiac in 2002.

Russell Brand: 'I Didn't Cause Oasis Split'

He rubbishes Liam Gallagher's claim...

Russell Brand has denied he was responsible for the break-up of Oasis.

Earlier this month, singer Liam Gallagher appeared to suggest his brother Noel’s friendship with Brand was behind the split last year.

He also compared Noel and the comedian to Neil and Christine Hamilton.

In an interview with Rolling Stone, Brand said he had spoken to Noel about Liam’s comments, and that the only people to blame for the band’s break-up were the band themselves.

“Yeah, that was a bit odd,” Brand said. “I spoke to Noel about that.

“Look it's not like you're in a band for years and then you start hanging out with Russell Brand and it's over – as if the two things are mutually exclusive.

“The only people responsible for the breakup of Oasis are in Oasis.”

Brand added: “I don't want to be the Oasis Yoko Ono without even getting to have sex with John Lennon!”

The comedian’s comments came in the same interview in which he claimed that exposing young musicians to hard drugs would help strengthen the music industry.

Didn't Paul And Noel Do Weller

Rock's bigwigs joined forces for the smallest gig either of them have played in years.

Paul Weller and Noel Gallagher tore up this tiny London club - with a capacity of just 600 - to launch the latest offering from the Modfather.

Weller debuted a string of thumping new tracks from his Wake Up The Nation - on course for No1 on Sunday - on Wednesday night.

Then Oasis axe man Noel pitched up and the pair performed the Gallagher-penned Mucky Fingers as well as Weller's own Echoes Round The Sun.

Gripping renditions of classics including Wild Wood and a final triumphant airing of vintage JAM hit Start concluded a special night.

And I wasn't the only one who enjoyed listening to the rock Lords.

Comic Alan Davies even queued up at the North London venue's stage door to get the great Weller's signature after the show.

If you want to experience a man on top of his game look out for Virgin Media's Music On Demand service in June, when the gig will be broadcast

Rihanna Covers Oasis' Wonderwall

Rihanna performed in Zurich Monday night for her Last Girl On Earth tour, and much is being made of the fact that she was rushed to the hospital directly after due to a minor rib injury (she’s okay, and has since been carrying on with her tour).

One thing that has been overlooked is that earlier in the night recently dethroned chart queen RiRi decided to channel the Gallagher brothers by covering Oasis’ “Wonderwall” during her Swiss set. Catch Rihanna leading the audience in a sing-along to the classic tune after the jump.

Is This Really Liam Gallagher’s New Band?

Oasis fans have been waiting patiently for news of the Gallagher brothers’ future plans. But it looks like there’ll be a few fights before their respective solo careers get off the ground.

Sky Songs has heard that Liam Gallagher’s new, as yet unnamed, band will feature his old Oasis mates Gem Archer and Andy Bell.

Noel Gallagher is also said to be putting a new band together, featuring… er, Gem Archer and Andy Bell. Oh dear.

In addition, Liam’s band will include former Robbie Williams drummer Chris Sharrock, while Noel is said to have recruited Jay Darlington, former keyboard player with Kula Shaker.

Andy Bell’s going to be a busy lad since he’s also been recording demos for a new album by none other than Adam Ant. You heard it here first.

Noel Gallagher Joins Paul Weller At London Gig

Noel Gallagher was the surprise special guest at Paul Weller's show at the London Relentless Garage on Wednesday, April 21.

NME.com reports that Gallagher joined the ex-Jam mainman for a version of Oasis' album track, 'Mucky Fingers,' from 2005's 'Don't Believe the Truth,' and Weller's 2008 single, 'Echoes Round the Sun'.

The gig was to mark the April 19 release of Weller's new album, 'Wake Up the Nation.' Meanwhile, Gallagher has been talking about the rough and tumble nature of his long-standing relationship with "The Modfather" -- saying he's a "nightmare" to go out on the town with.

In an interview with radio station Talk Sport, the former Oasis mainman said, "I guess Weller's my oldest friend, I suppose, and I don't mean the fact that he's, like, 50. There's an unwritten law that I never go out with him, he's a nightmare.

"He's hardcore -- if you go out with him, if you come home at all, there's bumps and bruises. There's been scuffles in the street and you've probably fallen out with him."

As Spinner reported on April 21, the man who attacked the Gallagher rocker at the Virgin Festival in Toronto in 2008, leaving him with three broken ribs, has avoided jail.

Danny Sullivan, 48, was sentenced to 12 months of house arrest after he pleaded guilty to assault, causing bodily harm.

Gallagher Attacker Sentenced To House Arrest!

An intoxicated renovator who attacked Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher on a Toronto concert stage was sentenced Wednesday to 12 months house arrest.

Daniel Sullivan of Pickering eluded security, ran on stage and pushed Gallagher from behind during the Virgin Music Festival in September 2008.

Gallagher broke three ribs when he fell against a speaker and Oasis was forced to cancel concerts in Paris and New York.

“Severe intoxication is the only plausible explanation for behaviour that makes no other sense,” Justice Richard Schneider said.

“It is clear we will have no conclusive answer as to what precipitated this event.”

Schneider also ordered Sullivan to abstain from alcohol for 12 months.

In November, Sullivan, 48, pleaded guilty to assault causing bodily harm.

Sullivan’s lawyer, John Collins, characterized his client as “the quintessential first offender,” a man of otherwise good character, who has accepted full responsibility for his actions, is ashamed of what he has done, and is profoundly sorry for his actions.”

A pre-sentence report depicted Sullivan’s background as “unremarkable.” It said he “doesn’t have a history of difficulties with alcohol, drugs, violence or any mental health issues.”

Sullivan, who has been married for 20 years and has three young children, always has been gainfully employed and participates in a small theatre group and with his son’s soccer team, court heard.

Sullivan apologized Wednesday to Gallagher and the court. He declined to comment afterward, saying he is being sued, along with the concert promoters and a private security company, for $2.1 million by Gallagher. A claim has been issued in Ontario.

The judge permitted Sullivan to go to work, attend medical appointments and shop once a week. But the judge rejected Sullivan’s request to attend his theatre group and his son’s soccer games.

Gallagher said in a victim impact statement that it felt like he’d been “hit by a bus,” needed months of rehabilitation and is still in pain.

Crown attorney Ruth Kleinhenz sought up to nine months in jail, saying Sullivan’s crime is “too serious for a conditional sentence to be considered.”

“Mere intoxication cannot explain the event and that perhaps it was driven by a need for ‘15 minutes of fame.’ This deliberate act should be seen as more serious than one derived from mere drunkenness,” said Schneider in summing up the Crown’s view.
