On This Day In Oasis History...

On the 7th June 2005, Oasis appeared on TV Total in Berlin, Germany and performed 'Lyla' as well as being interviewed.

In March 2009 'Oasis' were banned from performing in China. The Chinese Government is said to have revoked the band's performance licences, and cancelled the two concerts they were to stage in Beijing and Shanghai in April 2009.

The promoters of the shows say that a decision to cancel them was taken after the Government realised that Noel Gallagher had appeared at a 'Free Tibet' benefit gig in the U.S. In 1997. "The Government deemed that the band are unsuitable to perform to their fans in the Chinese Republic."

Russell Brand Embarrassed By Noel Gallagher

Comedian Russell Brand was left cringing with embarrassment when he introduced movie co-star Jonah Hill to his best pal Noel Gallagher when the pair became embroiled in an argument moments after meeting.

Brand had been excited for his Forgetting Sarah Marshall and Get Him To The Greek co-star to talk to Gallagher after telling the actor how "nice" the rocker was.

But he was mortified when the Oasis star verbally attacked Hill, comparing the musician's rude behaviour to a "drunk uncle".

Hill explains, "I met him (Gallagher) once on Russell's radio show (in England) and somehow immediately got in an argument with him that I had nothing to do with! He was really surly."

Brand adds, "I was really embarrassed, 'cause I'd been telling him (Hill) how nice he was. He was like a drunk uncle."

More On Liam Gallagher's New Band 'Beady Eye'

When can we expect Beady Eye to come into vision?

Despite promises of an album and gigs this summer it's looking more like it's going to be a 2011 release date for the band - completed by Liam's ex-Oasis pals Gem Archer, Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock.

Meanwhile, our spies have informed us that beyond their new material the band are unlikely to play Oasis tunes in their live set, aside from the Liam-penned ones.

England Flag Used On Oasis' Knebworth Programme Cover For Sale

Oasis - England Flag used on the cover of the Knebworth shows programme.

This flag was bought in 1996, photographed and used to form the cover image of the programmes for the Knebworth gigs.

It was then put into storage in the Microdot archive and has never seen the light of day since.

The flag is not a cheap printed version, but a quality stitched item - see detail photo.

Dimensions are 35 inches x 18 inches (90cm x 46 cm).

The flag is in as new mint condition, having never been used since the day it was photographed in 1996.

Comes complete with certificate of authenticity signed by Oasis art director Brian Cannon.

Noel Gallagher To Play Live With 'The Faces' In August?

Noel Gallagher wants to tour with The Faces.

The legendary 70s group are preparing to make a comeback next month, with Simply Red star Mick Hucknall taking over from original frontman Rod Stewart on vocals, but guitarist Ronnie Wood claims they have other singers in the pipeline if they tour at a later date.

He said: "Of if all goes down well, we'll tour next January. We also have Chris Robinson from the Black Crowes. Noel Gallagher has always been interested. It's going to be fun.

"Other people were in the running, there was Kelly Jones out of the Stereophonics, but they're busy at the moment."

The rocker also insisted that despite considering other frontmen, the group haven't ruled out Rod Stewart returning eventually.

He added: "We haven't ruled Rod out, it's just that his schedule isn't crossing over exactly when we wanted him - he's not available.

"The door isn't closed on Rod, but we're just carrying on because it's worth it."

On This Day In Oasis History...

On June 5th 2009, a interview with Noel Gallagher was broadcast by BBC North West News.

Also included in this post are a number of videos and interviews, from the three dates Oasis played at Manchester's Heaton Park.

Oasis voluntarily refunded over 20,000 ticket holders when their first Heaton Park concert was delayed by 40 minutes due to power problems, despite the band going on to play a full two hour set.

Review: Oasis - ‘Time Flies: 1994-2009′

There was once a time when Oasis would put out a single every 3 months, a classic track backed with great B-sides, sometimes even better than its A-side. Who can forget the track listing of Cigarettes And Alcohol? Listen up, Fade Away and I Am The Walrus, you just wouldn’t dream of that happening today, not least with Oasis. 1994-1997 was a period when Noel Gallagher had the world in his hands. Anthem after anthem, there seemed to be no stopping him. You couldn’t avoid Oasis even if you tried, “What’s a Wonderwall anyway?” Fran Healy sang on Travis’ single ‘Writing To Reach You‘. Their songs had become part of the fabric in our society. As the title of their new single’s compilation rightfully suggests, Time Flies, and here we are celebrating their singles catalogue with a compilation that feels like the true marking of the end for Oasis.

Nearly a year on since their messy demise, and a reconciliation seems as far off as ever. Liam continues to push on with the rest of the remaining band members under new name ‘Beady Eye’ (at time of press it was still unconfirmed whether this was a wind up), and Noel’s slipped very comfortably back into ‘normal’ life, or whatever normal is for a multi-millionaire rock star. We’ve already had the ‘best of’ compilation back in 2006, ‘Stop The Clocks’, a collection of tracks handpicked by Noel which served its purpose as a glimpse into what Oasis were about for the untrained ear but did little to satisfy the long term followers due to the omission of certain tracks (Half The World Away over Rockin’ Chair? you’ve got to be joking). Now we’ve been served up a singles collection, ‘Time Flies 1994-2009‘, slightly cheesy title aside, this is an impressive body of work that reminds us what an unstoppable force Oasis once were.

One immediate observation you’ll probably make of this compilation is the order of the track listing, which is not chronological. The danger of doing it this way may have been opening the doors to critics who would say the album documents a decline in quality over the years. Noel said he wanted to put it together like a gig, but did also note that all the “iconic” songs would have been at the front had it been done by release date. I’d personally not have a problem with the album being chronological, as it would have been more of a journey for the listener, particularly for those who have followed the band since the beginning. So what if the second disc would be weaker than the first? it would be a much more organised and honest reflection of the bands career.

This release will do well to shine a spotlight on brilliant tracks that slipped under the radar and are overshadowed by earlier material that still dominates the radio airwaves today. The anthemic Hindu Times, the psychedelic trip of Go Let It Out, the stomping live favourite, Lyla, and one of the finest pop songs of recent years, The Importance Of Being Idle - many bands today would kill to write songs half as good as these. It would be fair to say that in recent years Oasis became more of a singles band, but a bloody good one at that.

The artwork for Time Flies is a striking, monumental image of the crowd at their career peaking Knebworth gigs in 1996. Bonehead still reckons they should have just called it a day that weekend, but moments on this album such as the adrenalin pumping Shock Of The Lightning, the rediculously cool swagger of D’You Know What I Mean, and the modern classic Falling Down make it seem worthwhile holding it together that bit longer, not to mention some of the historic gigs that followed it. Finsbury Park, anyone?

If you love Oasis, you’ll have all of these songs already but will probably buy it for your collection. This is for anyone whose heard the occasional Oasis song on the radio but has never bothered to pull their finger out and explore the bands catalogue beyond Morning Glory. There’s a wealth of greatness in this band’s history that no compilation could ever truly do justice, but this comes close.

Just don’t expect a second volume.

Oasis: 'Time Flies... 1994-2009'

"It's hardly Paul leaving The Beatles," Noel Gallagher quipped in 1999 when Paul 'Bonehead' Arthurs left Oasis. Similarly, after Noel himself ended the group for good with a few eloquent words last summer, even he would probably admit that it wasn't exactly the Fab Four ripping themselves apart. Briefly the Biggest Band InThe World, Oasis had become a scapegoat for everything wrong in British music and an easy target for hipsters and broadsheet journalists alike. But despite the band's wavering quality control in the latter two-thirds of their career, it would be unfair to ignore their genuine pop culture impact through both their attitude and their songs - 28 of which are gathered here on this comprehensive singles collection.

Over their 15 years, Oasis released snatches of music that came as close as any from the period to modern folk standards. Dulled by ubiquity, Time Flies perhaps marks a moment where some of those hits can be appreciated again. Despite their daft lyrics, 'Wonderwall' and 'Live Forever' sound every bit as wonderful as they did at the dizzy peak of Britpop. 'Stop Crying Your Heart Out' will be played when England get knocked out of every World Cup until 3010. 'The Importance Of Being Idle' is a sharp paean to laziness up there with 'I'm Only Sleeping', 'Sunny Afternoon' and 'Seventeen'. The shoplifted 'Cigarettes & Alcohol' (T-Rex) and 'Whatever' (Neil Innes) perhaps uphold the adage that if talent imitates, genius steals. First single 'Supersonic' is still their finest moment, as Noel's third-hand solos and Liam's sweet/scratchy vocals combine to make so much more than the sum of their parts. Swansong 'Falling Down' boasts some of Noel's best words and a twisting groove that hints at what he might achieve on his own. The prescient 'Don't Look Back In Anger' shows Noel's underrated knack for flinging out a great one-liner amid all the silly rhymes ("Please don't put your life in the hands / Of a rock 'n' roll band / Who'll throw it all away").

There are misses aplenty, of course. While 'D'You Know What I Mean' is a delightfully arrogant mess of self-belief and proggy power, the other Be Here Now singles are just overlong, overblown puffs of coke and booze. Despite occasional peaks, including Liam's sole songwriting classic ('Songbird'), Standing On The Shoulder Of Giants and Heathen Chemistry often sounded like the work of a band deflated, their once-alluring lack of guile undermining any attempt at experimentation ('Who Feels Love?'). Don't Believe The Truth was genuine return to form, but infighting and the supporting cast's weak writing efforts ended the hope of Oasis reborn as a democracy on Dig Out Your Soul.

It's tempting to force Oasis into a historical narrative, with the release of their first single and this comp almost precisely mapping the birth and death of New Labour. But Oasis only really gripped the Zeitgeist for a heady three-year period between their first single and Be Here Now. After that, they were much less a social phenomenon than Just Another Rock Band Putting Out Records. For all the comparisons to The Beatles, they were more like the Ramones in many ways - a short-lived burst of brilliance followed by a longer period of hit-and-miss efforts. They also had a similarly shameless heart-over-head sensibility and near-Luddite back-to-basics approach to rock 'n' roll which infuriated as many as it entranced.

The singles were of course only half the story. There were great B-sides ('Acquiesce', 'The Masterplan') and album tracks ('Slide Away', 'Gas Panic'). There were also live shows that veered from the wonderful to the ear-rippingly awful. But here on Time Flies you get a fair overview of a band who soundtracked a generation and gave thousands of kids the misguided-but-wonderful belief that they too could be superstars.

Time Flies . . . 1994-2009

Big Brother ****

No nonsense. It’s all the singles from 1994’s Supersonic to last year’s rather underwhelming Falling Down . Oddly, they’re not in chronological order, as compiler Noel Gallagher, wanted this double album to “feel like a gig – a very long one”. But part of the appeal of this end-of-career compilation was supposed to be tracing the band as they went from leery lager louts to rock star cocaine heads to mature Britpop survivors.

Yes, Oasis were derivative; no, they weren’t The Aphex Twin, but once you let go of whatever reflexes may be triggered by the very mention of their name and play these 27 songs back to back, you can take more than a sanguine view of their ups, downs, hits and misses. Some of the best guitar pop music of the last 20 years can be heard here.

You know the drill with Oasis albums: the first two were great and the following five simply didn’t meet expectations. It’s not that the Gallaghers snorted away their careers; it’s just that personnel changes, squabbling and dwindling creative powers saw them, studio album-wise, go from a sprint to a canter to a limp.

Still, the glory days sound magnificent: it’s just a cascade of exuberance, with Live Forever and the underrated Whatever losing none of their lustre. But the gaps soon open up. All Around the World is a bloated shambles, with whatever song was once there overdubbed out of existence.

The second half of their career, supposedly the artistically barren years, really leaps out at you here. The Importance of Being Idle (perhaps their best single), Little By Little and Liam Gallagher’s jaunty Songbird show that they could pull it out of the bag when they wanted to, but blithe inconsistency spoils the effect.

After one bout of handbags too many, it’s now all over bar the inter-sibling shouting. Time for all to look back in equanimity. See oasisnet.com

Why All Football Songs Are "Complete Shit", By Mr Noel Gallagher

From the current issue of the NME (ON SALE NOW)

Hi, Noel! What's your favourite football song?

"Fortunately they're all complete shit. There has never been a good World Cup song."

What, not even 'World In Motion'?

"Ah, but that wasn't really a World Cup song, was it? That was just a song they had lying around. It was. You heard it here first! I mean, apart from the rap... Yeah, I suppose I'm having that one."

What if Carlos Tévez released one with his band?

"I have heard them lots actually. What are they like? Well, they're influenced by my former band so they've got impeccable taste. I'll give them that."

Extract from an interview with Russell Brand and Serge Pizzorno in the same issue:

NME: Is there much in common with the crowds you attract and football crowds?

Russell: "I bet with Kasabian fans you get a big crossover, right?"

Serge: "Yeah, it's good for that. I prefer it, it's far better than the chin-scratchers. It's nice to have people going mental, having the best time ever."

Russell: "My fans have to listen. And they're mostly girls. I go, 'Can you please listen, this is a very delicate joke, please don't scream over it.' It's nothing like football. But some bands do appeal to that demographic."

Like I've made the mistake of doing gigs with Noel Gallagher before. I done this gig once at KOKO, a thousand-seater venue. I thought, 'Probably the audience will be split 50/50 between good old Russell Brand comedy fans and Oasis fans.' I thought, 'I'll go out, do 15 minutes at the top and then bring out Noel.' So I walked out and... (yells) 'OASIS! OASIS! OASIS!' (laughs) So my 15 minutes just went to '...Welcome Noel Gallagher!' I thought, 'Fuck that!' There's no way I was going to try and chisel out some jokes from that wall of hooliganism. They were there for him. I go to him before, 'Are you a bit nervous mate, 'cos I'm a bit nervous.' (puts on Noel voice) 'Fuckin' thousand people, try Knebworth, four hundred thousand.'"
