David Beckham On Oasis, The Stone Roses And Manchester

David Beckham has said that he had to keep his love of Oasis a secret while at Manchester United because it was 'frowned upon' as the majority of the band supported Manchester City.

He told SoccerBible “I used to go to the odd Oasis gig even though it was frowned upon them being City fans and me being a United fan and a United player. But being in Manchester in the nineties, it was just part of the culture.”

He added that he regularly meets up with Noel Gallagher, as well as members of The Stone Roses.

“I loved those bands, but as soon as we’re together all we talk about is football and it’s the first thing they want to talk about. I sit with Noel and all he wants to talk about is how crap United were and how great City are. Same with Browny and a couple of the other guys. Mani is such a massive United fan. He loves a chat. He doesn’t struggle with words. All he ever wants to talk about is the youth team, reserve team, ‘99’.”

“The nineties were such a massive moment for Manchester culture, and that’s when I discovered how much I loved the music.”

Liam Gallagher On Richard Ashcroft, Ian Brown, Lee Mavers And Shaun Ryder

Liam Gallagher gave his opinion on the frontmen from other British bands to Radio X in a recent interview.

He said: "Of our time, Richard Ashcroft is pretty cool. I like him, I love him. Obviously Ian Brown is f***ing majestic. Lee Mavers is f***ing beautiful and Shaun Ryder is just mega. So there are lots and lots of f***ing great frontmen."

Liam Gallagher On Noel, Oasis, Jose Mourinho, Richard Ashcroft And More

Oasis legend Liam Gallagher has given fans a rare insight into his career, life and mind during a hilarious Q&A session.

Chatting to Radio X’s Johnny Vaughan in front of an intimate audience at the Etihad Stadium, the home of his beloved Manchester City, Liam was on outspoken top form as he explained why he really isn't a proper Manc and gave his thoughts on United boss Jose Mourinho, the scary clown craze, sounding like John Lennon, his favourite cheese (Cheddar), wearing leopard print Ugg slippers and why Oasis isn't getting back together.

Quaffing Taittinger champagne, he also described two of his most rock and roll moments - doing the loop the loop in a private jet over the Golden Gate Bridge and heckling film star Hugh Grant in front of his ex girlfriend Liz Hurley in Los Angeles.

Seated on a plush brown leather sofa, Burnage's finest was joined by Oasis guitarist Paul ‘Bonehead’ Arthurs for the Q&A in front an audience of just 200 people, in aid of the Make Some Noise campaign for disadvantaged youngsters by Radio X owners Global.

Fans paid £150 to join the Manchester music icon in the aptly named Legends Lounge.

Earlier this month the rocker flew in to Manchester for a premiere in London for a special screening of the documentary film Supersonic.

Here are some of the highlights of the Radio X Q&A:

On Jose Mourinho (who he described as a "little ****")

"He already looks like it's the end of the season."

Brother Noel and why Oasis isn't getting back together.

"For someone who washed his hands of it he's the one banging on about it.

"I'm ready to go but our kid bangs on like I've stabbed his cat or summat. The thing is he wants to be a solo star. The reason why the band isn't back together is because Noel needs to be surrounded by yes men and I ain't one.

"People need to stop asking him when the band is getting back together. He'll get bored so stop asking him."

The scary clown craze.

"I think they're alright man. I don't mind 'em. I like a clown. Some of them put a lot of effort in."

On THAT scene in Supersonic when the band performed badly because of crystal meth.

"I enjoyed myself. That **** happened a lot."

Brotherly love.

"I remember being drunk as a 15-year-old. I came in at 11pm, couldn't find the lights so ****** all over his stereo."

Singing style.

"I sound like John Lennon. I get more power from not holding the microphone."

The longest he has ever stayed up for.

"The 90s"

Favourite footwear.

"I've got Uggs. They're leopard print and they're the best ******* slippers, slippers when you want to get locked out of the door."

On not being a proper Manc

"I wouldn't say I'm a Manc. I've lived in London 20 years. I'm a universal dream."

The best band frontman, apart from himself of course.

"Richard Ashcroft is pretty cool and Ian Brown is fantastic. And Shaun Ryder is mega."

Being banned by Cathay Pacific flights over a row about a scone.

"I woke up and everyone was eating a scone. I didn't have a scone or a pickaxe."

Liam Gallagher Posed For Photos With Fans At The Stone Roses Gig In Manchester Yesterday

Liam posed for photos with delighted fans watching the band at the Etihad Stadium.

Oasis rocker Liam Gallagher caused a stir among fans as he turned up in Manchester yesterday to watch The Stone Roses.

The Live Forever and Wonderwall singer delighted revellers turning out to watch the Roses at the Etihad Stadium by posing for photographs.

In one cheeky snap he was seen licking a window as a fan looks on. In other photos he showed off a rather splendid colourful coat, his hair grown back into his trademark longer style.

One fan enthused in a photo shared on Instragram: “En route to the Roses and I meet this legend!”

Another fan, while pointing at Liam, says: “So this happened.”

Fans spread the word on Twitter that he was in town to see the Waterfall hitmakers, who play their final gig at the Etihad tonight, saying: “It’s official - Liam Gallagher is in Manchester to see The Stone Roses.”

Another tweeted: “First time in Manchester and I meet Liam Gallagher. Excited for the Stone Roses tonight. Everything is looking up.”

And even if they didn’t meet the actual Liam Gallagher, some fans thought they might have done, with one tweeting: “It’s hard to try and spot Liam Gallagher at a Stone Roses gig at the Etihad when everybody looks like Liam Gallagher. #stoneroses.”

Liam wasn’t the only Manc legend in town to watch the Stone Roses. Former Manchester United player David Beckham was there on Wednesday night.

Before playing This Is The One, Ian Brown announced to the crowd “This one is dedicated to Mr Beckham.”

After the show David and his 17-year-old son Brooklyn popped out for a curry in Longsight.

Oasis, The Smiths, Ian Brown Feature In New Exhibition

The show was put together by the photographer and curator behind the Chasing The Sun: Oasis 1993-1997 exhibition in London in 2014.

The photographer behind immersive Oasis exhibition Chasing The Sun - which included a recreation of Bonehead’s living room from the cover of Definitely Maybe - is opening a new show in Manchester next week.

Lawrence Watson is transforming a brand new Salford art space for his Manchester, So Much To Answer For show, with 40 pictures of the likes of The Smiths, Oasis, Ian Brown, The Charlatans, and New Order - some very famous, others never seen before.

He’s also turning the basement in a ‘dark room’ full of photographer’s contact sheets and a cinema screen. And upstairs, there’ll be an interactive 1980s teenager’s bedroom with authentic decorations and technology from the period - and a stack of records to play.

The idea is to give context to the way Lawrence works and to the era in which many of the Manchester bands he captured were growing up and writing music.

Among the stand out images are a shot of Liam Gallagher sitting on an empty stage in Birmingham with his beer (“After I’d taken that, he said to me, ‘It’s great this touring, everywhere I go they build me a bar’,” Lawrence laughs), and Ian Brown backdropped by a Barbie pink street in Moss Side, which was painted up for an advert in 1993.

Other highlights are shots of The Smiths hanging around outside the old Albert Finney shop on Oldham Road, and Noel Gallagher waiting for a train at Union Station.

Lawrence, who left school at 16 and took an apprenticeship in a dark room on Old Street, says it was a love of music - and specifically, not being very good at playing bass - that made him want to be a photographer.

But he tried different styles first. “I was really into people like Don McCullen, and it was the time of the National Front and Britain First so I’d been taking pictures of that,” Lawrence recalls. “I was still learning, and it was a bit intimidating having 300 skinheads coming towards you.”

From photographing gigs he earned commissions with the NME, where he met The Smiths and Morrissey - who he would continue to work with as a solo artist and says had “the clearest ideas” when it came to photo shoot locations.

But he has also gone on to work extensively with Paul Weller - who pulled the cover for his final Style Council sleeve in order to get one of Lawrence’s shots on there instead.

The new gallery, Future Artists Studios at 81 Chapel Street, has been made possible by a Kickstarter campaign and the art group’s not for profit cafe space next door, Home Of Honest Coffee.

The exhibition opens for a free private view on June 9, at 6.30pm, then runs until July 18. Tickets are essential and cost £6 via the Future Artists website.

Noel Gallagher On The Stone Roses New Album

Noel Gallagher says the new Stone Roses album has put the band in the same mindset as when they recorded their classic debut.

Gallagher, who first dropped hints about the band "blooming" last year, recently bumped into Roses' frontman Ian Brown at a supermarket where he learned about their new music and also chocolate shower gel.

"I am very excited, for them mainly," Gallagher told NME of the band's return. "They're going to play some new songs. I bumped into Ian in a supermarket recently. He was buying chocolate flavoured shower gel. This is not a joke. He leant and said 'have you tried this?' and I said of course I hadn't. He swears by it, says it's amazing. And before it turned into a photoshoot with everyone and their cameraphones, he was telling me how excited they are by it all. He said it was like they were making their first record again."

Why Noel Gallagher Won't Be Going To See The Stone Roses In 2016

Noel Gallagher has said that he is not interested in seeing The Stone Roses live unless the band record a new album.

Noel spoke to Jo Whiley on BBC Radio 2 last night, as part of an acoustic concert that saw him play a set leaning heavily on his Oasis back catalogue.

With John Squire having joined Gallagher to perform 'Champage Supernova' at Knebworth in 1996, Gallagher was asked if he might join Stone Roses on stage at any of their gigs in Manchester next year.

"I'd love to see Ian Brown sing 'Champagne Supernova'," Gallagher joked. "If they asked, yeah, but I'm not planning to go to the gigs. I didn't really go to the last ones. I did a few gigs with them. If they're going to make a new record I'd go and see that but I've seen them before."

Stone Roses Reunion Got Liam Gallagher A Wee Bit Excited

Liam Gallagher’s toilet mat needed a boil wash after The Stone Roses announced their comeback.

During his cameo in the Manchester band’s movie documenting their return, he revealed his exact location when he heard the news.

Liam said: “I was having a p*** when I heard The Stone Roses were getting back together.”

He went on to explain how he lost control before adding: “They’re the best band ever to come out of Manchester.”

The Beady Eye frontman missed the premiere of The Stone Roses: Made Of Stone movie in the city on Thursday.

But hopefully director Shane Meadows sent him a copy on DVD because the film – out on June 5 – is a work of art. The opening and closing sequences featuring Ian Brown will make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck, and intimate footage of the band rehearsing is a real treat. However, the pick of many highlights is footage of the Roses’ comeback gig at Parr Hall, Warrington.

Shane had cameras outside the venue when news of the surprise gig was announced on Radio 1 and the band’s Facebook and Twitter pages.

Fans were asked to bring their Stone Roses memorabilia to the venue to get for a free ticket.

A builder turned up saying he’d “just knocked through a wall” but downed tools to claim a ticket still in his overalls. Another punter showed off sweat patches under his arms to show how fast he’d run.

A number of fans were filmed on their phones asking family to ferry over their CDs. The scenes are topped off with live footage of the comeback gig for 1,500 fans.

Add this to rarely seen archive material documenting the band’s history, footage of the group on the road and brilliant concert coverage and the film is well worth a watch – even if you’re not a Roses fan.

Liam Gallagher And The Stone Roses Fall Out

Liam Gallagher has fallen out with his idols The Stone Roses after an “ugly incident” between the two camps.

The Beady Eye singer has been the Manchester heroes’ No1 fan since Ian Brown, John Squire, Mani and Reni got back together last year.

But things took a turn for the worse after the former Oasis frontman overstayed his welcome during their tour then overstepped the mark by shooting his mouth off in their company.

A source close to both camps said: “It’s all gone a bit sour recently with Liam and The Roses. There was an ugly incident in Dubai when Liam said a few things that were totally out of order. It didn’t go down well at all.

“Ian, John and Reni are all low-profile lads and don’t subscribe to aggro of any sort.

“They were also getting a little bit p***ed off with him ballooning on the side of the stage every time they played a gig. He had to be escorted off at one show and put behind the mixing desk because he was making such a scene.

“He was then slung out of there for spilling beer on the desk.

“He was generally being a bit of a nob — and The Roses can’t be ar*ed with the panto-mime.”

Liam was ever-present during The Roses’ amazing shows last year.

He went to their first gig in 16 years when they played Parr Hall in Warrington. Beady Eye, who have a new album out soon, also supported Liam’s idols at Heaton Park in front of a huge home crowd last summer.

But, as is so often the case, it has all gone pear-shaped with a bit too much of the Liam cliché.

He has a cameo in The Roses’ documentary Shane Meadows is releasing this summer — which the band might have regrets about now. Or is it all just part of a timely masterplan to promote new Beady Eye single Flick Of The Finger?

Example Gets Thumbs Up From Noel Gallagher And Ian Brown

Ian Brown and Noel Gallagher are fans of Example.

The 'We'll Be Coming Back' singer recently played on the same bill as the Stone Roses singer Ian and High Flying Birds main man Noel, and was pleasantly surprised how impressed with him they were.

He told website Ilikemusic.com: ''I chatted to Ian Brown for a couple of minutes. He gave me a hug and was like, 'Fair play lad, that were proper good that, I heard you absolutely ripped it a new a***hole.

''Then Noel Gallagher was pretty much just like, 'You don't go away you, do you? You're like a bad smell. I f***ing like that about you. F***ing like that. Go to my dressing room and have a Guinness.''

Example is about to release his fourth album, 'The Evolution of Man', and said while he was determined to shoot the video for first single, 'Say Nothing', in the desert, he was determined for it not to look ''cheesy''.

He added: ''I didn't want it to be like one of those cheesy ballads. I wanted it to be a bit more weird and menacing, like a f***ed up dream.

''That's why we put these characters in who look like they're from post-apocolyptic Mad Max town, you know? They don't have a relevance to the song.''

'The Evolution of Man' is released on November 18.

Noel Gallagher Dedicates 'Supersonic' To Mo Farah At V Festival

Noel Gallagher dedicated Oasis track 'Supersonic' to double Olympic gold medallist Mo Farah at V Festival last night (August 18).

In a set packed with material from his debut solo album, along with classic Oasis tracks, Gallagher wowed the large crowd on the Virgin Media Stage at the festival in Chelmsford.

Before playing a special, acoustic version of 'Supersonic', Noel dedicated the track to Olympic 10,000m and 5,000m champion Mo Farah and received a rapturous response from the enthusiastic crowd. You can watch a video of the performance below.

Fans were in a cheeky mood and, at one point, some were heard chanting "where's Liam? Where's Liam?", to which Noel responded, "where's Ian? He’s backstage," referring to The Stone Roses frontman.

Noel Gallagher, Ian Brown And Dizzee Rascal Have An All-Night Rock’N’Roll Tear-Up

Noel Gallagher celebrated his 100th solo gig in classic fashion — with an all-night rock’n’roll tear-up.

The High Flying Bird was joined by two Stone Roses, a Buzzcock and Dizzee Rascal to mark the occasion backstage at Benicassim.

But Dizzee kept putting his foot in it all night, by calling the former Oasis star “Liam” by mistake.

A source backstage said: “Noel was on top form — it was his first chance to have a night out with the Roses.

“Ian Brown was doing magic tricks for the lads, including bandmate Mani.

“Noel was going to knock Dizzee’s baseball cap off to make his point.

“It was quite a collection of hardened drinkers — Buzzcocks’ Steve Diggle is a punk legend.”

Noel partied until 8.30am — then had to catch a flight to London as he plays a huge Edinburgh Castle gig tomorrow.

The Stone Roses dedicated I Am The Resurrection to their “friend Noel Gallagher” during their brilliant headline slot at the huge Spanish festival.

Noel had played the best gig of his tour to a sunburnt, hammered crowd.

Earlier he poked fun at bassist Mani for being knocked back in his hotel at breakfast for wearing sandals. Speaking on my Xfm show, he said: “No wonder — he’s got feet like Wurzel Gummidge.”

Noel was braced to step in for headliners The Roses who nearly missed it after their private jet broke down in Portugal.

Noel added: “The elastic band on the propeller for their jet has gone. I told Mani he only needs to ask if he wants to borrow my Learjet.”

He said he’s seen Bono and is up for playing during U2’s next world tour.

And he announced he’ll play an exclusive and rare acoustic gig with Xfm and WarChild at Dingwalls in London on August 14.

You won’t see Noel in a venue that size very often again — for tickets see noelgallagher.com or Xfm.co.uk.

Dizzee, Steve and The Roses are welcome to come along for round two.
