Review: Beady Eye In Belfast

Oasis's 1994 gig at Belfast's Limelight has gone down in rock 'n' roll history.

It was the evening the Mancunian mob learned their debut album had reached number one.

Last night's return to Belfast by front man Liam Gallagher, with his new band Beady Eye, also had an air of occasion.

The Ulster Hall was packed with die-hard fans eager to check out what Liam is up to now (and to sup a few thousand pints in the process).

Beady Eye is essentially Oasis without guitarist and songwriter Noel Gallagher, or, as some have joked, Oasis without the brains.

Loudmouth Liam is joined by the remaining members of the group's last line-up, guitarist Gem Archer, bassist Andy Bell, now on second guitar, and drummer Chris Sharrock.

They could have pulled a Guns n' Roses and kept the Oasis name, but respect is due for forging a new identity.

Consequently, they don't feel obliged to play any Oasis material, but that didn't seem to matter to last night's sold-out crowd, who greeted the songs from the foursome's Different Gear, Still Speeding CD like they were old favourites.

Unreconstructed efforts such as Four Letter Word, Beatles and Stones, The Roller and Standing on the Edge of the Noise are heads-down, no-nonsense anthems holding two fingers up to an increasingly stale music scene.

True, the new tracks may not be of the standard of the likes of Roll with It or Wonderwall and it has to be said that Noel's presence on stage left is certainly missed.

But as long as Liam still has the swagger and his bandmates continue to knock out the tunes, Beady Eye should be well worth watching.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Who Feels Love?" is a song by British rock band Oasis, written by the band's lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It became the second single to be released from the album Standing on the Shoulder of Giants, peaking at number 4 in the UK charts when released on 17th of April 2000.

The album was noted for its psychedelic feel, and "Who Feels Love?" was held up as the most extreme example of this. Mark Stent was praised for his production on the song, creating a "trippy" feel like that found on Beatles songs such as "Rain". With the psychedelic and Eastern sound, the song also reminds of George Harrison achievements like "Within You Without You" and also some of his solo work.

However, despite the high-quality production, the song was not well received by the critics, NME said that the production "triumphs over any real sort of feeling... pure mock Maharishi spirituality that not even Liam can salvage from the realm of self-parody".

One of the B-sides is a cover of The Beatles' "Helter Skelter". It was played live during the Shoulders tour of 2000. Paul Weller recorded a version of b-side "One Way Road" for his covers-album Studio 150 in 2004. The Weller version was subsequently used as the theme tune to Jack Dee's sitcom Lead Balloon.

Liam Gallagher Defends Wayne Rooney Ahead Of Manchester Derby

Liam Gallagher has started the Alex Ferguson-style mind games ahead of Man City's FA Cup semi-final against Man U by slating shop steward Gary Neville.

Asked about Mario Balotelli's antics by BBC Football Focus, the Beady Eye singer said: "What a geezer. I mean, all that throwing darts at people.

"That's not cool - a water balloon would have done. You know what I mean?

"But I like characters. If the world was full of f***ing Gary Neville's man, it would be bobbins, wouldn't it?

"He just looks like an estate agent."

He's got a point.

Foul-mouth Liam did defend the now retired Gary's former teammate Wayne Rooney though, after his four-letter rant into a TV camera.

The frontman said: "I don't know what the big fuss is about, you know.

"I suppose there's a lot of kids out there called Sebastian who will find it horrific that he's swearing down the camera.

"But it happens, young man."

Review And Videos: Beady Eye At The Olympia Night Two

"This is a top gaff," beams Liam Gallagher. "Never been here before. Look after it."

Once upon a time, you'd almost expect the former Oasis singer to be ripping the seats out of a venue rather than singing its praises.

It's back to basics for Beady Eye, starting in the mid-division rather than strutting their stuff in Whelan's. Amazingly, the crowd sings along to every song and there isn't a single audible request for Oasis.

Opening with 'Four Letter Word' and its mantra of "Nothing lasts forever", Gallagher is still leaning into his microphone and belting out the new songs with a voice that's astutely been compared to resting somewhere between Lennon and Lydon.

It doesn't all work. 'Millionaire' is a pointless dirge that would have best been left on the studio floor, but overall, Beady Eye peddle a neat line in catchy and energetic pop rock in the tradition of the Small Faces. It's derivative and won't appeal to any constituency outside hardcore Oasis and Liam fans, but it's undoubtedly effective.

The extended Gallagher family, bar Noel, are all in attendance. Liam's wife, Nicole Appleton, is also visibly enjoying her hubby's show from the guest boxes.

There are a few belters in the set, notably 'For Anyone', 'The Roller' and 'Standing on the Edge of Noise'. Admittedly, there isn't anything to match Oasis in their heyday, despite Liam's claim that 'Different Gear, Still Speeding' is better than 'Definitely Maybe'. It's certainly better than 'Standing on the Shoulder of Giants' or 'Be Here Now'.

They encore with a cover of 'Sons of the Stage' by Mancunian baggy band World of Twist, which I bought as a cassette single. Against all the odds, Liam's post-Noel career has got off to a respectable start.

He's still a great frontman, at one stage turning his back to the audience. This would be rude coming from most performers, but in the inimitable shape and swagger of a certain Liam Gallagher, it's mesmerising.

Alan McGee Spills Beans On Oasis

Oasis used to go on five-day drug binges.

The ‘Cigarettes and Alcohol’ rockers – who disbanded in August 2009 following a series of explosive rows between frontman Liam Gallagher and his brother, guitarist Noel Gallagher - were renowned for their hard partying in the 90s and their former record company boss, Creation head Alan McGee, said they partied harder than any of the other bands on the label, including Primal Scream.

Alan told Shortlist magazine: “With drugs and stuff Oasis were definitely the wildest. They were just intense. It was never one night with them – they’d start on a Friday and end on a Wednesday.”

Following the Oasis split, Liam, 38, recently revealed he has calmed his partying lifestyle for the sake of his three children.

He said: “In my pram I was a rock star. But I'm older now. I don't wanna grow up like a d**k. I don't want to get to 40 and embarrass my kids.

“I don't want to sound like a hippy but it's great. I run. With golf, I love making proper contact with that ball.

“I'm still on the fish. Sardines or salmon. Salad. I feel good. It's only the cigarettes that really stand in me way.”

Liam has since gone on to front Beady Eye, while Noel is working on his first solo album. -
