Folks On Supporting Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds And More

Michael from Folks took the time to answer some questions ahead of the bands support date for Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds at The Roundhouse in London on October 31st.

Were are you guys from?
Mostly from Manchester (Scott, Michael, Elliot, Thom) - we did rehearse there but decided to rent a rehearsal room out of the way in the countryside, 15 miles out of the city. Thom is originally from Sheffield but moved to Manchester last year. I think Noel and I were born in the same hospital, St. Marys, on Oxford Road. Mine and Scotts families are originally from Miles Platting, Elliot is from sunny Burnage.

Who's in the band and how did you meet up?

Scott Anderson (vocals), Michael Beasley (songwriter/guitar), Thomas Fripp (Lead Guitar), Elliot Barlow (Drums), Harry Gumery (Bass), Wil Akroyd (Keys). Scott and I had been working on songs and after a while, asked a few friends if they knew any spectacular musicians who might want to join the band. It took a while to find the right people but once we were assembled, it came together really quickly.

What style of music best describes what you do?

It's a little psychedelic but the emphasis is on the songs, each of which is a pocket symphony. We spent a lot of time deciding on what kind of instrumentation to use on each track for the record, flutes, mellotrons, strange strings. We were invited to use Toerag Studios in Hackney, London, which is where it first really started for us. We loved using the old EMI REDD desk, Automatic double tracking and recording on analogue tape, it was preferable to what we had used before. We found that because we’re using a four track tape machine, we didn't have lots of time to think about things like you might have in a digital studio. We usually cut one track per day. Verve Records in New York heard the recordings from Toerag and gave us a little money to make some more demos, which was inspiring since Verve is the home of the greats such as Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald .The greats who my Grandma Ada used to have on in her house in Moston. John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead, Plastic Ono Band) was an early admirer of Folks, too, and he told us to just get our heads down and work on songs and not worry about record contracts, songs come first.

What should fans expect from your support slot?

We're really looking forward to the show with Noel, we honestly couldn't be more honoured to be invited to play with him and his new band. We'll perform songs from the album we have due for release in 2012, to give people an idea of exactly who we are. The live performance is heavier than the record too, we hope people will enjoy it.

What are the bands plans for the rest of the year?

We're about to go on tour with Miles Kane throughout the UK just before we join up with Noel Gallagher. Hopefully we will get a few more shows in but to be honest, we're getting ready for the release of our full length debut album, I See Cathedrals, in early 2012.

How did the support for Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds come about?

Noel's manager played him some songs from our record whilst he was making the video for The Death of You and Me. He liked them and shortly afterwards, asked us to support him at The Roundhouse. Noel also asked us to be on BBC Radio 2 when he sat in for Dermot O'Leary recently. It was the first time we’d met him and we had to perform live on the radio with just two hours sleep as we’d been on tour in Scotland. Noel still has a great love of new music. Always looking for stuff and when he likes it, he supports it, he's altruistic and generous to a fault.

Are you looking forward to the show?
It'll be our biggest show to date and we'll be in such good company, We feel very lucky. We will play our hearts out and hopefully let people know exactly why we’re there!

What are your thoughts on the tracks from High Flying Birds?

Noel is a prolific writer, he has written many amazing songs over the years that are the soundtrack to many peoples lives, including my own. That he continues to write great songs is insane. It reminds me that we've got so much to do.

Were you fans of Oasis? If so, when did you first hear them?

I think the first play of 'Supersonic' was on Steve Lamacq's Radio 1 show, and I heard it there. Then a mate gave me a cassette with some tracks on, there was an unbelievable number of great songs which were far better than anything else around. Like everyone else, we became fans. There were no other bands around nearly as good - they wiped the floor with everyone else on the music scene at that time.

Finally what are your favourite Oasis tracks and why?

There are many... Supersonic, Shakermaker, Sad Song, Rock & Roll Star,Acquiesce, Wonderwall, Mucky Fingers, Whatever, Songbird, The Importance Of Being Idle but I think if I had to choose one, it would be 'Whatever' - I'm sure I heard an eight or nine minute version that was ostentatious, ambitious with brilliant strings. It may have sounded like The Beatles but it was clearly Liam & Noel at the height of their powers. I remember thinking they could take on the world with those songs when I heard that.

Noel Gallagher Detests Arch-Rivals United, Their Ground And Boss Sir Alex Ferguson

Manchester City fan Noel Gallagher has admitted he hates Manchester United but still reckons they will win their 20th title this season.

Gallagher, 44, told French channel Canal Plus that he detests arch-rivals United, their ground and boss Sir Alex Ferguson.

But despite City being two points in front of United going into today’s big city derby, Gallagher does not think Roberto Mancini’s side can lift the title this term.

Talking about his loathing of the Red Devils, the former Oasis star said: “I hate them and cannot stand them, their ground or their manager.

“It’s a hatred that steadily grows. I hate them more than yesterday.”

Despite the fact City are nip and tuck in the race for the Premier League, Gallagher does not think the trophy will be heading to the Etihad Stadium this season.

He said: “I want a draw in the match at Old Trafford because if we win the press will elect us as champions already and that brings all kinds of pressure.

“We won’t win the title, we’ll finish second, but next year, yeah.”

Noel Gallagher Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere (Vol.2) Part One

Taken from Noel Gallagher's tour Diary, 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere (Vol.2): Return Of The Dread-I'

Yes comrades. It's been a long time. Some might say too long. I say just long enough.

A quick re-cap then? Nah… too much has been said.

That was then, this is now. Some cat's still out there. Still doing the haka.

The rest of us have moved on. It's all good though, the glass always being half full 'n' all that… Cheers!!!!

So... where we at now? Well, we be at some hotel or other in the great city of Dublin, in the Republic of Ireland. The home of the brave. Preparing for the event that will be a pivotal moment in mine and maybe ALL our lives. It will certainly define the future as we know it. Nerves are a-jingling and a-jangling. Palms are sweaty already and the damn thing ain't for another 24 hours!!!

Been through this a thousand times before. Can't remember ever feeling like this though. I'm sure I won't sleep tonight. Too tense. A bad performance tomorrow and it could kill this thing before it's even started. On the other hand, a good performance and the sky's the limit. Either way, it's time to put up, or shut up!!!

I don't know why I'm putting myself through this. God knows I don't have to. Addicted, I guess. It's been looming on the horizon for what seems like a lifetime now.

I wish it was Monday and it was all out of the way so we could all just move on and let the future look after itself… I don't mind admitting to you comrades... I'M SHITTIN' IT... HARD!!!!!!!

I am, of course, referring to the Manchester derby. City v United. Blue v Red. The Rebel Alliance v The Evil Empire.

1pm. Live from the Death Star. Sky Sports 1HD.

Get on it. It's gonna be colossal.

WE ARE CITY. LOVE FOOTBALL. HATE UNITED.

Ps: Did I mention the gig at the Olympia? Onstage at 9pm. Don't be late!!!!

IN A BIT.

GD.

Noel Gallagher On The Music Of His Life

5-10-15-20 features artists talking about the songs and albums that made an impact on them throughout their lives, five years at a time.

Noel Gallagher is taking a piss when I walk into his corner room at Manhattan's Bowery Hotel. He washes his hands, walks out of the bathroom, and sits down on the couch. He's relaxed, if a bit weary. There is a small, stuffed leather pig in the room, and he seems slightly amused by it. We're used to Gallagher (figuratively) pissing on other bands (or his brother), but, at 44, the onetime Oasis songwriter, guitarist, and singer has mellowed-- though that doesn't stop him from dropping roughly 50 f-bombs during our 30-minute interview. Gallagher's humor comes naturally to him, and he's not really trying to be funny when he flows through expletives with casual finesse.

But he is funny, even if his legendary world-beating days-- the ones where he claimed to be a superhero and said bands like Coldplay were akin to "bland, faceless fucking trainee police officers"-- are in the past. In fact, he likes Coldplay. "When I heard 'Yellow' for the first time, I immediately picked up the guitar and went, 'Fucking bastards, why didn't I write that?'," he says now. "I feel that way about a lot of their songs."

After quitting his old band two years ago, Gallagher released his solo debut, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, this week Europe (it's out November 8 in North America). We spoke about the music he's loved over the past four decades, and he only mentioned the Beatles twice.

Alan McGee To Sell Off Oasis Memorabilia

Alan McGee is selling a host of music memorabilia gathered since setting up Creation Records in 1983.

Many of the items for sale at the auction, which takes place at Omega house in Stockport on November 5, relate to Creation bands, such as a one-off print of Noel Gallagher, taken before the release of 'Be Here Now' and signed by photographer Jill Furmanovsky.

It's said to be in excellent condition, and has a list price between £400 and £600.

Elsewhere in the sale, there's a collection Oasis tour itineraries, books signed by McGee, a number of backstage passes and a certificate from the Liverpool Institute Of Performing Arts, given to companions of the college.

There's also a Dirty Pretty Things gold disc, presented to McGee by Carl Barat, and a hardback copy of the book The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists by Robert Tressell.

The book's signed by Gordon Brown, Tony Blair, Mo Mowlam and others as a birthday gift to Alan McGee, thanking him for his support of the Labour party,

The most expensive item is a John Squire painting in oil and wax called 'Jesus And Mary', in which Squire - who this week reunited with his Stone Roses bandmates - attempted to visually emulate some of Creation band Jesus And Mary Chain's sounds through the use of splattered paint.

McGee bought the painting in 2007 for £17,000, although it is now only expected to fetch between £12,000 and £16,000 when sold at the specialist sale.

It's not yet known why McGee is selling so many of his possessions.

For more information on the sale, go to the website of Omega Auctions.

Noel Gallagher Discusses Row With Brother Liam On Jonathan Ross Show

Noel Gallagher discusses row with brother Liam on Jonathan Ross Show

Former Oasis frontman Noel Gallagher has spilled the beans about his falling out with brother Liam on The Jonathan Ross Show, where the rocker appeared with Miranda Hart and Michael Sheen in the last of the ITV show's first series.

Noel was a guest on Jonathan Ross' sofa along with comedienne Miranda and actor Michael in an episode to be broadcast tonight and the Oasis star was more than happy to discuss the divide between him and Liam.
'The sad thing is we’re both reasonable guys,' said Noel. 'I don’t know why we don’t get on, we just don’t and we should be thankful for that.

'The way it ended was horrible. He threw fruit at me. Once the fruit basket has been tampered with…'

When Jonathan pressed Noel for information on a possible Oasis reunion, the singer was quick to deny rumours that Liam had said he wanted the band to reunite in 2015 for the anniversary of What’s The Story Morning Glory.

'I don’t believe he said that,' Noel said. 'It would be nice but we’re not together anymore. You don’t go on holiday with your ex-wife do you?'

But Noel was more upbeat about this week's news that the Stone Roses have reunited, citing the band as a key inspiration for Oasis.

'The reason we formed a band and the reason we-re sitting here is because of them,' said Noel. 'It was a real nice feeling, seeing them together again. I’m made up for them.'
