First International Pretty Green Store To Open In Tokyo

Pretty Green, Liam Gallagher’s clothing range with a mixture of rock & roll heritage and a quintessential British flavour, will open its first international store in Japan on 26th July. Liam himself will be in Tokyo opening the doors with a huge launch party on the evening of the 25th July.

This will be a new arm of the business headed by Kojo Kato, a well-known figure in the Japanese fashion industry with over 30 years’ experience. The store itself is situated in the popular Aoyama shopping district of Tokyo and sits amongst other premium British brands.

The label, now in its seventh season and gathering a solid following, has put together a range of clothing designed exclusively for the Japanese market only. Highlights include a luxury wool mix stripe boating blazer and classic polo’s with a twist, the range is underpinned with a very British red, white and blue theme and its trademark Paisley has been exclusively developed, in those patriotic colours, especially for the Japanese range. There is also a dedicated Japanese on-line store where the collection will be available to customers.

Nigel Grant, Brand director, comments: ‘This is a huge statement for us and reflects the way the brand is growing and becoming much sought after. We are delighted to have set up our own entity in Japan to offer our customer’s an amazing retail experience in which they can shop. Japan has a vibrant fashion industry and Tokyo a strong retail market. We see this as a natural progression for us to have a presence there’.

Noel Gallagher's Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere (Vol.2) Part Sixty Four

From Noel Gallagher's 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere' tour diary.

Right comrades. Been a few days. Where were we exactly? On the way to the airport to catch a flight to the Ukraine I believe? Yes? I think so yes.

Flight was delayed a little bit and thank God it was. The most violent, loudest and windiest storm passed over the airport as we sat on the tarmac. The plane was being blown from side to side, rain POURING out of the sky. I usually love that kind of display from Mother Nature but when the pilot comes on over the tannoy and says in what can only be described as a comedy dead-pan Russian accent "Good morning. Welcome to Aeroflot AF 83 (or something!) to Kiev. Time will take 1 hour 25 minutes. Enjoy flight.” Whoa!!! Hang on a minute man you're not actually gonna take off in this weather are you!? The engines started . . . (we are all going to die!). Now I'm not a nervous flier by any means, but I was seriously hoping the pilot would see sense and hang back a little until the storm passed. There was an audible sigh of relief when he comes back on and says "There will be delay of 20 minutes. Storm will pass.” Thank the holy lord Jesus Christ almighty we were saved!!!!!!

After that it was quite an uneventful flight. Just how I like them. At customs in Kiev I noticed a peculiar sign as I was trying to enter the country. It was a list of things that one shouldn't really be carrying if one doesn't want one's day ruined by the police . . . amongst the usual suspects - gold bullion, plastic explosives and weapons (although there are always one or two of those on any tour!). There were also these two . . . WORKS OF ART (over 50 years old) and DRASTIC SUBSTANCES????? Now, I have no idea what a drastic substance is, but I intend to make it my life mission to find out and hopefully sample some and relay my findings to you good people of the Internet (and/or mobile devices).

So . . . Kiev? What a great place!! Loving it. Had great show on Wednesday. One of the top 10 of the tour for me. Only marginally spoiled by some fat drunken skinhead English yobs desperately trying to cause trouble. Thankfully one or two of them did and one or two of them got their heads kicked in by some locals. Kind of restores your faith in the unwritten law of karma!! Anyway, great, great night. Felt it all day yesterday though. Total wipe-out.

So . . . there you go. I'm off to see England play Sweden. I shall try and avoid the inevitable blood-bath should England lose which is a very strong possibility. Although I foresee a draw so we, I and the great city of Kiev, will live to fight another day (so to speak!).

ONWARDS.

GD.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Shakermaker" is a song by British rock group Oasis, written by their lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. First appearing as a single, released on the 13th June 1994, which peaked at number 11 in the UK charts, it was later released on Oasis' groundbreaking debut album Definitely Maybe. It was also the first song performed by the band on the UK's world famous music program, Top Of The Pops.

Gallagher admits the lyrics are taken from the world around him, for example, a Shaker Maker was a popular toy in the 1970s, the character of "Mr Soft" was taken from a Trebour Soft Mints commercial, which featured Cockney Rebel's song "Mr Soft", "Mr. Clean" is a song by The Jam, one of Gallagher's favourite bands, "Mr Benn" is a British children's cartoon and the entire last verse - Mr Sifter sold me songs/When I was just 16/Now he stops at traffic lights/But only when they're green - was written in a taxi on the way to the recording studio to record the song. Apparently, Liam Gallagher was pestering Noel to finish the song. At this point, the taxi stopped at the traffic lights outside 'Sifter's"' (a record shop in Burnage, Manchester). Noel penned the lyric and it became part of the song. Noel used to frequent the store to buy old records before Oasis started releasing albums and Mr Sifter refers to the owner of the record store.

Liam Gallagher On Style And More

To celebrate the British Fashion Council's London Collections, Shortlist Magazine has designed three limited editions covers to front their style specials. Knowing a man who is clear of his sartorial choices, Liam Gallagher was naturally asked to submit his own design.

Shortlist Magazine recently caught up with Liam to talk through the ideas behind his psychedelic cover, the meaning of British style and what's next for Pretty Green.

SM: So what is the idea behind your cover?

LG: "The cover was inspired by the psychedelic portraits of The Beatles taken by Richard Avedon in the late 60's, which I’ve got hanging in my house. I wanted to create something that had the same vibe and also used the paisley logo that we created for Pretty Green."

SM: How did you go about putting it together?

LG: "I worked on it with the graphic design team at PG and this one jumped out the minute we did it."

SM: What does British style mean to you?

LG: "British style for me is a look back over the decades especially in the 60’s where lads were buzzin and defining their style and where bands like the stones and the Who were creating their own classic look. Take album covers from the Kinks to The Small Faces they all had a clean smart British look that made a statement. It’s all about iconic classic pieces like the Parka or the Trench which epitomise British style. I try to capture a bit of that in what I do with Pretty Green. Fashion and music will always go hand in hand and that has a major bearing on the Pretty Green designs."

SM: What are your personal style rules?

LG: "It’s about the look and whether I personally like it or not. I’m into quality clothing with a vintage vibe. Pretty Green is a reflection of my personal style and taste, one foot in the past one foot in the future."

SM: What is your worst fashion mistake you’ve made?

LG: "Its not for me to point out, I’m sure there’s been a few mistakes but overall I’m cool as fuck!"

SM: Who is your all time style hero?

LG: "There’s several – Stone Roses, George Harrison / Bryan Jones / Steve McQueen."

SM: Who gives British style a bad name??

LG: "Anyone who wears what they are told to wear and not what they want to wear, you know the ones who have stylists, if you don’t know what you look good in then I feel sorry for you."

SM: Give us a guide to looking good on-stage? What are the essentials?

LG: "For me it’s starts with the shoes and then work you’re way up."

SM: What next for Pretty Green??

LG: "We are opening a new store next week in Leeds which will be our 11th in the UK, and then our first international store in Tokyo which opens at the end of July just before the mighty Beady Eye play Fuji Rocks, it gunna be mega we are having a big party on the Wednesday if your in town and you’re not a clown then you’re invited!"

Noel Gallagher’s Crying Shame

Punters singing along to Don’t Look Back In Anger won’t be the only ones crying on Noel Gallagher’s new DVD.

Footage of Noel bawling when Manchester City won the league in May will be included in a documentary featured on his live DVD, due out at Christmas.

He said: “I was in a bar in downtown Santiago in Chile. Fortunately, I had a film crew with me on that leg of the tour and they were filming all of this. So you’ll be able to see all of this.

“I am dreading watching this footage back because it’s just going to go from every emotion that can come out of a human being. Tears, anger, it’s just unbelievable.

“Unfortunately I did shed a tear. You have to just let it out.

“I said the same phrase that rhymes with cucking bell about a hundred times at the top of my voice into the television.”

At least the Chilean folk around him wouldn’t have understood all the swear words.

From Noel Gallagher's 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere' tour diary.

Yes comrades. . .

Festival season is upon us. Non-stop now. Flying here, there and everywhere.

You currently find me in the great city of Moscow. Did a festival last night with that band The Cure and a load of other bands no-one's ever heard of (Everything Is Made In China?? Nope me neither!!). Had a pretty good one. Not sure the Cure fans down the front enjoyed it though. They did look a bit miserable it has to be said. I enjoyed it anyway so fuck 'em!! Seemed to be more police there than punters.

Legged it early to watch the England-France game. Not bad. Not great but not bad. Off to the Ukraine today . . . Kiev to be exact. Never been out that far. Gonna be hot, hot, hot by all accounts!!

Enjoy the rain back home suckers!!!!!

ONWARDS.

Beady Eye Release Another New Mix

I put this mixtape together for my own entertainment towards the end of the last Beady Eye tour. It got a few plays backstage after gigs on the last UK dates, (I remember it being on after a fantastic gig in Blackpool with Hippy Mafia) and then I passed it on to Pretty Green when they asked me for some music to use this Spring in their stores and online. DJ Shadow and Stereolab tunes feature heavily as I was listening to them a lot at the time. One of the DJ Shadow tracks is a really short segment of a much longer live mix CD called Brainfreeze, which I picked up in Melbourne a few years ago - in other words, that's not me scratching it's DJ Shadow haha... get hold of the CD if you can, it's cool. (Also, the intro comes from aDJ Shadow single called High Noon). The first track, which gives the mixtape it's name, is an old Krautrock tune, the vocals may not be to everyones taste, she kind of sounds like Grace Slick meets Johnny Rotten but the band sound amazing. The Black Crowes tune Evil Eye and The Johnny Guitar Watson track are probably familiar to anyone I've ever made a compilation tape or CD for ... no apologies at all to the taste police, who will be after me for including Joan Armatrading... she's a great acoustic guitarist and I dug that CD out after probably 20 years since I last heard it... there's a hip hop cover version of a reggae tune, there's a reggae version of a rock and roll tune... there's Beck doing Black Tambourine, which reminds me (in a good way) of the long long DJ sets I used to do at Bangers and Mash in Sweden on the nights where there was no guest DJ... that's about it. Enjoy - and thanks for listening.

Liam Gallagher Designs A Cover For Shortlist Magazine

When asked about his fashion mistakes, there was only one answer Liam Gallagher was ever going to give:

"I’m sure there’s been a few but overall I’m cool as f*ck!"

As a man who is clearly sure of his sartorial choices, we decided to ask him to design one of three limited edition covers for our London Collections style special.

Click here to see Liam's spectacular effort. And for those of you eagle-eyed folk, you'll have spotted his cover bears a resemblance to legendary snapper Richard Avedon's shots of the Beatles.

Apparently, Liam has some of Avedon's images hanging in his house. If it's good enough for him, it's good enough for us.
