Noel Gallagher: 'I Wouldn't Reform Oasis Even If All The World's Starving Children Depended On It'

Singer also speaks about his friendship with Manchester City's eccentric striker Mario Ballotelli.

Noel Gallagher has emphatically ruled out the chances of Oasis reuniting, saying that he wouldn't reform the band, even if "all the starving children in the world depended on it".

The guitarist, who released his debut solo album 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' late last year, told NME Radio in an inteview which you can hear at the bottom of the page that he has no need to reform Oasis, even though he knows the band's fans would love to see it.

Asked if there was any truth to his brother Liam Gallagher's comments that the band were set to reform in 2015, Noel denied this and said when asked if he'd consider working with Liam again: "He shouldn't have fucking tried to sue me should he?"

Then asked if he would consider reforming Oasis, he said: "Not even if all the starving children in the world depended on it. I know it's the done thing these days and what people do, but it's not what I do. I know bands reform and 'They're bigger than they ever were' and 'They're more successful than they ever were', but Oasis were one of the biggest bands in the world."

He continued: "At any given time, we were one of the five biggest bands in the world. We were the biggest thing to come out of England in 35 years. Why would we do it? For the fans? Nobody ever gave a shit about the fans in that band. It's done."

The guitarist also spoke about his friendship with Manchester City's eccentric striker Mario Ballotelli. The Italian star has enjoyed a very high media profile since he moved to England last summer from Italian side Inter Milan and has been involved in a series of widely reported incidents.

These have include him allegedly driving a young fan to school to confront a bully and reportedly handing over £1000 to a homeless man who he encountered walking through the streets of Manchester. Even though Ballotelli has denied all of these incidents, Gallagher says he reckons there's a grain of truth to them.

Asked about Ballotelli and the stories about him, Gallagher said: "He says they're not true, but I reckon he's trying to play it down. I've met him a few times and I know crazy people when I meet them, I've got a brother who's crazy. He's got the look of the devil in him."

He continued: "The day I interviewed him, I'd been to watch him train and he was the best player that day and then the story broke that'd he'd been in a strip club at 5am and then he goes straight to training and be interviewed by me. He's crazy, but he's a great lad though."

Meanwhile, Gallagher has confirmed the release of his first solo live DVD on October 15. International Magic Live At The O2 will feature the full gig from his February 26 show plus a second disc which will include footage of his performance from the NME Awards, where he was crowned this year's Godlike Genius, plus an acoustic set at The Mod Club in Toronto and three music videos from his recent singles.

Noel Gallagher: 'Being A Solo Artist Is Harder Work Than Being In Oasis'

High Flying Birds man also admits that he doesn't actually miss being in Oasis anymore.

Noel Gallagher has spoken about his career as a solo artist and has admitted that he finds it "a lot harder work" than being in Oasis.

The guitarist, who released his debut solo album 'Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds' late last year, told NME Radio in an inteview which you can hear at the bottom of the page that he doesn't actually miss playing with Oasis at all.

Asked how he was finding life as a solo artist and if he missed being in Oasis, Gallagher said: "No, I don't say that in a callous way. I don't think about it too much. If it was great I wouldn't have left, if it was all shits and giggles then I'd wouldn't be doing this. I don't miss it, I enjoy what I do now."

He continued: "This is a lot harder work than Oasis was, this is very hard on the brain, Oasis was hard on the soul. This is hard, you've got to be on it every night. When I was in Oasis, I'd shuffle on hungover, having been up late, by the time we got to my bits in the set I'd be very warmed up, but now I've got to be on it from the start."

Gallagher also admitted that his lengthy solo tour has meant his collaboration with Amorphous Androgynous has "fallen by the wayside".

Asked about the tour, he said: "I'm on the road till November. The record blew up on the road and I don't know if it'll happen like this again. We've just kept adding gigs and gigs. My second album has fallen by the wayside because we've just kept adding gigs."

Gallagher and his High Flying Birds will also play the iTunes Festival tomorrow (September 12) at London's Roundhouse. See itunesfestival.com for full details on how to get tickets.

Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In Nottingham

It's the eternal problem faced by musicians doing gigs once they've reached the stage where more than one hand is needed to count their albums. They want to play the new stuff; the crowd wants to hear the old stuff; and neither ends up entirely happy. And when you've gone solo after being in the biggest band of the past 20 years, it's a problem that's doubled.

So how did Noel Gallagher cope with this on tour with his High Flying Birds? Pretty well, actually.

Of course, it was the Oasis songs that got the best reception, but that's not to say that the new stuff wasn't well received as well.

After kicking off with the Whatever B-side (It's Good) To Be Free, it was straight into the opening three songs of the High Flying Birds album and the clear laying down of a marker.

In fact, the whole of the CD was played in order (surely something you don't expect unless you're in Rick Wakeman concept-album territory) – but, interspersed with B-sides and carefully-chosen Oasis tracks, it made for a well-received mixture.

Of the new stuff, If I Had a Gun and AKA...What A Life were naturally the favourites, while an acoustic Supersonic and rapturously-received Don't Look Back in Anger were the highlights of the years when Gallaghers came in twos.

Many of the songs benefited from the contribution of the Crouch End Festival Chorus, who are accompanying Noel on tour, although to my mind they made Whatever sound a little too much like a Halifax commercial.

And what of the man himself? Well, he's not changing any time soon - so no-one should have been shocked by the damning put-downs of a front row heckler and the industrial language (although I fear a few of the Crouch End ladies may have added a few less savoury words to their vocabulary).

What might have come as a surprise, though, was the quality of his voice - a voice which always seemed to suffer slightly when sandwiched in between Liam's snarling vocals, but which came across loud and true in a venue which has seen other singers lose their way.

Noel Gallagher Rules Out 2015 Oasis Reunion

Noel Gallagher has emphatically ruled out any chance of an Oasis reunion in 2015 following the possibility of a return for the band to celebrate the 20th anniversary of their landmark album ‘(What’s The Story) Morning Glory?‘ being discussed over recent months.

“Well, he shouldn’t have fucking tried to sue me, should he?” Noel told Nation Radio’s Chris Blumer ahead of his solo arena gig in Cardiff this week when asked about comments apparently attributed to Liam Gallagher that he would like Oasis to tour in 2015.

“Not even if all the starving children in the world depended on it,” he continued when quizzed on whether that meant an Oasis reunion would never happen.
“I know it’s the done thing these days and what people do but it’s not what I do. I can understand bands reforming and they’re bigger than they ever were and more successful – we couldn’t be more successful than we ever were; we were one of the five biggest bands in the world at any given time and the biggest thing to come out of England in 35 years so what would we be doing it for? For the fans? No-one ever gave a shit about the fans in that band. So it’s done, it’s done.”

Review: Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds In Cardiff

Who says Blur v Oasis was the British music story of the ’90s? Fast-forward two decades and two of Britpop’s foremost faces are once again the talk of the town.

A spiky, grungy set from former Blur guitarist Graham Coxon loosened up a testosterone-fuelled crowd, showing how British rock’s elder statesmen still set the bar for the young pretenders some two decades on.

From the moment a black-clad Noel Gallagher emerged there was nothing but unadulterated adulation. Typically stylish yet unassuming, an understated (It’s Good) To Be Free led the way before a huge and harmonious Everybody’s On The Run – stoked by the sonorous backing chorus – saw the arena erupt. The balconies went mad as Gallagher pinged and prodded their adrenal glands, briefly slackening the pace before a beautiful, bare version of Supersonic with a tender piano.

An adoring crowd resorted to boos when the Burnage boy dedicated AKA... What A Life! to “Manchester City fans everywhere, the nicest people in the world” but they were cheering his name again by the track’s denouement.

It felt like a single-fingered salute to crowd-pleasing platitudes – this is a man who has earned the right to gig how he wants, swaggering around with his trademark scarlet guitar slung across a snappy leather jacket.

Soldier Boys And Jesus Freaks went off like a rocket before Gallagher asked his audience to augment a melodic Half The World Away – in truth, they needed no encouragement. After 70 minutes of relentless excellence he and his menagerie of musical maestros sloped off the stage before a four-song encore building to the climax everyone wanted.

A rowdy, reminiscing Whatever tugged at the memories of yesteryear before a punchy Little By Little brought everything back the more recent side of this millennium.

And then, as Gallagher himself pronounced, it was “that time”. As he launched in to Don’t Look Back In Anger 10,000 arms poked skywards in unison, a shared ecstasy spilling throughout the auditorium.

The ’90s may be long gone, but Noel Gallagher’s appeal burns brighter than ever
