On This Day In Oasis History...

"Little By Little" is a song by British rock band Oasis, first released as the sixth track on their fifth studio album Heathen Chemistry. On September 23rd 2002, it was released with "She Is Love" as the first (and, so far, only) double A-sided single by the band, peaking at #2 in the UK Singles Chart Noel Gallagher provides lead vocals on both tracks, which he also wrote.

"Little By Little" was perhaps the most controversial song on the album, receiving mixed reviews from those who felt it was a classic example of an upbeat Oasis anthem and those who felt it was a twee, patronising, sycophantic melody. Regardless of this, the song managed to peak at number two in the UK charts based largely on the publicity garnered by the song.

The promo video to the song featured a guest role by Robert Carlyle. The cover art for the single is an homage to Robert Indiana's LOVE artwork.

She Is Love

"She Is Love" is a song by British rock band Oasis, first released as the ninth track on their fifth studio album Heathen Chemistry. In September 2002, it was released with "Little by Little" as the first double A-sided single by the band, peaking at #2 in the UK Singles Chart. The song was written about Noel Gallagher's girlfriend Sara McDonald and is a light, acoustic song about being in love.

Gallagher claims it was written in the Buckingham Gate Hotel in London, and that it took 30 minutes to complete. The band commissioned British fashion art director Rachel Thomas to make a promo video for the song. However, the resulting film, a mix of animation and live action, has never been released on any format.

Noel Gallagher On Russell Brand Sleeping With A Spice Girl And More

Noel Gallagher has spoken about Russell Brand's appearance at the closing of the Olympic Games in London last month.

He told the current issue of Q Magazine "I sent him a message straight after the Olympics, saying words to the efeect of, 'After two weeks of glory, to have it left to a f**king junkie in a top hat murdering The Beatles to round off what was a brilliant celebration of Great Britain'.

He added: "He's on tour at the minute and he plays that message to the crowd every night. Then he calls me on my answering machine - it's become part of his act. I don't answer the phone, because I know what he's f**king doing. So I get all of these messages every morning. The people of Weston-Super-Mare are in hysterics, with him saying "Murdering The Beatles? At least I didn't dig' em up and base my career on 'em'. But you know at least I'm not shagging Geri Halliwell. I mean f**king hell, out of all The Spice Girls - not ginger."

Liam Gallagher Dresses Up In A Tuxedo To Celebrate His 40 Birthday

For years he has been the bad boy of the British music scene with a nonchalant attitude and outspoken opinions.

But Liam Gallagher may have just grown up as he celebrated his 40th birthday on Friday night at Whiskey Mist, in London.

The Mancunian was suited and booted as he and his celebrity mates hit the popular venue for a long and expensive evening.

Liam looked rather dapper in a black tuxedo which he wore with a black bow-tie and white shirt. Of course the rock star didn't do things completely straight and added his own twist to the smart -outfit by having his shirt untucked.

With his long side burns and cool retro hairstyle, Liam looked like the lord of the manor as he stood outside the venue with arms spread out.

A source told The Sun: 'Liam isn't shy about hitting the big 4-0. He's got all his friends and family down for a tear-up.

'He's had a brilliant week over in Madrid doing some business with Pretty Green and had a belter of a night out.

He's starting a new decade in his life with a bang.'

The former Oasis front man had arrived in a large silver cab accompanied by his wife and former All Saints star Nicole Appleton, but his brother Noel was absent.

Nicole, 37, looked lovely in a black and grey strapless dress as she joined family and friends at the trendy shindig.

Her sister Natalie Appleton, 39, also attended the event and seemed more than a little worse for wear as she left. The mother-of-two was in good company as the birthday boy had also thoroughly enjoyed himself.

Liam emerged from the nightclub bleary eyed as he posed for photographs with some keen fans.

Television presenter Holly Willoughby was a surprise guest at the party and she tweeted: 'Tonight... Is a brilliant night... I'm fully aware now that I will remember this for a very long time x'.

Pictures of Liam and guests can be found here.

Liam Gallagher Celebrates His 40th Birthday In Style

There was no way that Liam Gallagher was going to enter his forties with a whimper.

The Beady Eye frontman booked out one of London’s top nightclubs, Whisky Mist, to mark his milestone 40th last night.

And in a bid to make sure the brutal bar tab didn’t get too silly, he even got vodka brand Ciroc to sponsor it.

Tipple of choice ... Ciroc vodka In the old days it would have been Red Stripe and Benson & Hedges backing the binge, but times change.

A source said: “Liam isn’t shy about hitting the big 4-0. He’s got all his friends and family down for a tear-up.

“He’s had a brilliant week over in Madrid doing some business with Pretty Green and had a belter of a night out. He’s starting a new decade in his life with a bang.”

Liam’s missus Nicole Appleton helped organise the party.

Close pals and family were invited, plus a few famous faces.

The date of the bash made it difficult for any of the Manchester City stars to attend though. It was less than 48 hours before City’s Sunday teatime game with Arsenal, so only Mario Balotelli would risk making an appearance.

However, Liam did receieve birthday wishes from one of his favourite Blues stars. Argentinian striker Sergio Aguero sent the rocker a happy birthday message on Twitter yesterday.

Liam treated himself to a new ring to mark the birthday.

The jewels resemble the shape of the mod target and cost him a small fortune.

He told me the diamonds had special significance with outer space when I saw him at the GQ Awards.

He’s also pictured here with his pal Scully from Manchester earlier this week with two fluffy mascots at Real Madrid’s Bernabeu stadium.

They look like they might come from another solar system too.

Liam might be 40, but he’ll always have the spirit of a teenager.

Noel Gallagher Is Sorry For Ruining Dance Music

Noel Gallagher has claimed responsibilty for ruining music in the 1990s.

In an interview for this month's Q magazine, the former Oasis guitarist, whose formulaic, derivative indie helped to lure a generation away from electronica and fuelled a boom in guitars, shaggy haircuts and Britpop, reveals he was once a regular at legendary Manchester acid house club the Hacienda in 89/90 and still enjoys a rave:

"One of the best nights I’ve had out recently was at Coachella. We were up till 7 o’clock in the morning, listening to those classic house tunes, going, Why did music have to change? Why couldn’t it have stayed like this? Then someone said, It’s because of *you*! And I was, 'Yeah, sorry about that'."

The full interview is in the next issue of Q, out September 21st.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"Stand By Me" is a song by British rock group Oasis, written by lead guitarist, Noel Gallagher. It was the second single to be released from the band's third album, Be Here Now, and peaked at number 2 in the UK charts in September 1997. It was kept from the top-spot by the record breaking Elton John single "Candle in the Wind 1997," re-recorded and released in memory of Diana, Princess of Wales, who had died three weeks before the release of "Stand by Me". Despite this, "Stand By Me" still went Gold in the UK. "Stand by Me" was acknowledged as one of the stand-out tracks from Be Here Now.

Interview

In a 1997 interview promoting Be Here Now, Noel Gallagher had the following to say: "It starts, 'Made a meal and threw it up on Sunday'. When I first moved to London my mam kept on ringing up and asking was I eating properly. Yes, Mam. So I tried to cook a Sunday roast and puked up for two days with food poisoning. It was back to Pot Noodles after that. It's a bit like "Live Forever", I suppose, with a touch of "All the Young Dudes" in the background -- though I made sure I changed the chords."

Live Performances

Due to Noel Gallagher's general dislike of Be Here Now, "Stand by Me" is rarely played live by the band at their concerts, as it is Noel who usually decides the song listings for Oasis' tours. A live version of the song from this tour can be found on the double-CD version of Familiar to Millions.

A well-known acoustic version of "Stand by Me" was shown on television the night before the release of Be Here Now as part of a BBC1 documentary, featuring Noel, Liam Gallagher and drummer Alan White sitting by the side of a swimming pool, with Liam on vocals, Noel on acoustic guitar and White holding a tambourine.

Writing

Noel Gallagher claims to have written the song whilst suffering from food poisoning when he first moved to London. His mother Peggy would phone him to check on him and repeatedly told him to ensure he was eating properly. This spurred Gallagher to cook himself a proper English Sunday dinner, which resulted in a bout of food poisoning. Gallagher claims that the song's first line—"Made a meal and threw it up on Sunday/I've got a lot of things to learn"—came to him as he lay on the floor and it was then that he began to pen the lyrics to the song.

The title for the song probably comes from the song "Stand By Me", which was covered by the Gallaghers' idol John Lennon. In a characteristic example of Noel Gallagher lifting elements from songs of which he is fond, the rousing sequence of chord changes between the repeated chorus lyrics 'Stand by me/Nobody knows the way it's gonna be' bears a remarkable similarity to a similar chord sequence in Mott the Hoople's "All the Young Dudes", written by David Bowie.

Video

The video for the song was a reworking of a famous series of adverts for The Guardian newspaper. Entitled The Whole Picture, the adverts showed people appearing to be engaging in criminal and/or anti-social acts—only to revealed that they are actually helping someone else. For example, a scruffily-dressed skinhead rushes at a businessman; it appears he is making an effort to mug him; only the "whole picture" reveals that he is fact dashing to push him away from a load of falling bricks. Similarly in the video for "Stand By Me", a shop appears to be being burgled - its window smashed and people taking away electrical goods—only for it to be revealed that in fact the victim of a motorcycle crash has gone through the window and is buried under the televisions.

"My Sister Lover" - Some fans believe the title to be a reference to the band Sister Lovers, a group that invited Oasis to a May 1993 gig at King Tut's Wah Wah Hut in Glasgow, Scotland, where they were spotted by Creation Records chief Alan McGee, who reportedly offered Oasis a recording contract on the spot after the gig.

"Going Nowhere" - apparently Noel's attempt at a Burt Bacharach style song - can be found on The Masterplan, a collection of Oasis B-sides. It is one of only two B-sides from the Be Here Now era to be included on the album. Although it was not released until 1997, the song was written in 1990, before Noel even joined Oasis, let alone before they were signed.

Noel Gallagher's Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere (Vol.2) Part Seventy Five

From Noel Gallagher's 'Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere' tour diary.

Yes comrades. How's it going? All is well I trust?

So, I'm out in South East Asia. Bangkok . . . well, I'm actually in transit to Singapore to be exact.

Played a show in Bangkok last night. Pretty fuckin' good. Odd place Bangkok. Not quite sure what to make of it. It’s hot . . . very hot . . . pissing down constantly . . . like a monsoon!! Very, very busy gaff. Lot's of western people . . . sex tourists, hippies, travellers, Man United fans . . . you know the type. I do like the food though. Who doesn't?

Went out the other night to watch Real Madrid-Man City. Might have had the weirdest footballing experience I've ever had. Watched it in some shady bar on a big screen with hi-energy versions of that album by that Adele being played at excruciating volume. Not the most pleasant night out I've ever had. The fact that we blew it in injury time made it all the more . . . shit (for want of a better word).

What else . . . . . . . ? Seen that film Prometheus on the flight on the way over. What a load of shit. Laughable rubbish. Have you seen it? Well don't . . . it's dog-shit.

 I think that's all I've got for you . . . ?

Yep . . . that's it.

Liam Gallagher's Real Character Revealed By Alan McGee

Middle age creeps up on us all – even rock stars.

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher is celebrating his 40th birthday today – leaving his fans feeling a little old. The Manchester City fan kicked off festivities with a high-spirited trip to the Bernabeu this week where his beloved team lost 3-2 to home side Real Madrid. Liam got a ticking off from local cops for getting lairy.

Liam’s music career started when he joined his school mate Paul McGuigan’s band The Rain as a teenager. They changed the name to Oasis and were joined by Liam’s brother Noel.

They played their first gig in August 1991.

The group went on to get eight UK No1 singles and seven No1 albums before splitting in August 2009.

Liam is still touring with his band Beady Eye and is at loggerheads with Noel.

Here, the man who gave Oasis their first record deal pays tribute to Liam – and we revisit some of the mouthy star’s most memorable quotes.

There's a story I want to tell about Liam which sums the man up to me. Everyone’s got an idea of what he’s like. But to me the real Liam is a courteous gentleman.

I was one of the first casualties of the Nineties scene. After partying straight for seven years, I spent nine months in rehab.

When I got clean I came back to London around October 1994 really shaken up. You’d think that people would welcome you back with open arms. But most people were too embarrassed to speak to me. I was the elephant in the living room.

The one person who came up and spent two hours talking to me was Liam. It was in December 1994, the night after Oasis had recorded Jools Holland, with the suits on and the orchestra.

Even people from my own record company, Creation, didn’t know what to say. But Liam was the one to say, “Are you all right?” For that I will always love him.

He was just a kid at that point and he was always being bothered by people coming up to him. But all he cared about was checking that I was OK. In a sense that showed real balls. That, to me, shows the real guy who is often misrepresented.

It’s a total cliché but you are only as old as you feel. I doubt I’ll ever grow up properly — and Liam certainly won’t either.

To me he’s like one of the old blues guys — or Paul Weller or Mick Jagger. He will be in a band until the day he dies.

The Beatles and the Rolling Stones were the first generation of rock stars and the first people that we’ve had to get used to playing gigs as older men.

Liam will be just the same. He’ll be up on stage when he’s in his seventies — whether it’s a small gig in the 100 Club or Wembley Stadium — and he’ll be doing it because he loves music.

That’s the best compliment I can pay him — that he still loves music and will still be doing it for a long time.

Turning 40 is always a big one. When you are in your thirties you can blag it that you are still a young guy. After 40, you can’t.

But I don’t think Liam will give a s***. He’ll put on a massive party for his close friends and it will be an excuse for a big night out.

He will live his forties like he has the rest of his life, in his own way. Good luck to him — and Happy Birthday.
