The Maccabees
Emeli Sande and Calvin Harris also among those to take home gongs.
Noel Gallagher, The Maccabees and Alt-J have picked up major awards at this year's Ivor Novellos in London.
Gallagher collected the award for Outstanding Song Collection, which was presented to him by Kinks singer Ray Davies, and thanked "my publishers, who I've only just met after 20 years – Sony, apparently," to guffaws of laughter from the industry audience. He dedicated the award to his wife, who, he said, once told him she'd never seen him write any songs. "This is proof that I do," he said.
Asked on the red carpet why he wanted to attend the ceremony earlier, Gallagher had replied: "Because they don't let clowns like One Direction in, so it must be a good one."
The Maccabees, meanwhile, won Best Contemporary Song for 'Pelican', which was presented to them by Manic Street Preachers frontman James Dean Bradfield. "It's a nice way to close the last record, coming to this and winning the award," said the band's Rupert Jarvis afterwards. "We're actually in the process of writing the next record, so this is a nice way to take a day off." Asked what the band would do with their five awards, frontman Orlando Weeks told NME they intend to Sellotape them all together to make "a totem pole of Ivors for our studio". The band beat Plan B's 'Ill Manors' and Alt-J's 'Fitzpleasure' to the award.
Alt-J won the Album Award for 'An Awesome Wave', which was presented to the band – minus absent singer Joe Newman – by Lily Allen. Speaking afterwards, they said they were celebrating the album's second win (after the Mercury Prize) by dubbing the achievement "El double-o". "We expected the album to be a cult thing that some blogs might pick up on, so to be recognised with an award like this is incredible," said the band's Gus Unger-Hamilton. With a gig at Brixton Academy to play tonight, the band said they'd be remaining teetotal for the rest of the ceremony. Asked how they'd celebrate, Thom Green said, "Jelly and ice cream." The other nominees were Ben Howard's 'Every Kingdom' and Lianne La Havas' 'Is Your Love Big Enough'.
Other big winners included the ubiquitous Emeli Sande, who picked up the prizes for Most Performed Work and Best Song Musically And Lyrically. Calvin Harris picked up the award for Songwriter Of The Year, who said in his acceptance speech that he had a vivid dream last night that he was heckled by Brian Enough. He also said, "Like my lyrics, I'm going to keep this speech brief and repetitive". He went on to describe the award as "the greatest achievement of my entire life".
The industry-focused awards, hosted by radio DJ Paul Gambaccini and now in their 58th year, are currently taking place at the Grosvenor House Hotel.
Other guests include Chris Martin, who presented International Achievement award to Bush frontman Gavin Rossdale. The pair jokingly argued onstage about which of them has the most beautiful wife.

Mancini, who led City to the Premier League title last season and FA Cup success in 2011, was shown the door on Monday after failing to win a trophy this term.
"Having won the Premier League and the FA Cup, he probably deserved another crack at it, but reading some of the stuff in the papers it would seem like he has lost the dressing room," said Gallagher.

Lyla is a song by the English rock band Oasis. The song was released on May 16th 2005 as the first single from the band's sixth album Don't Believe the Truth.
The song was written by Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, who has varyingly described the track as "specifically designed for pogoing", "annoyingly catchy", and the "poppiest thing since Roll with It".
Gallagher says that the song existed in an early form as a song called Sing and dated from the Heathen Chemistry-era. He also says that the title for the final song should have been Smiler, but was changed seeing as guitarist Gem Archer's previous band, Heavy Stereo, also had a song called "Smiler".
Sony's insistence that it should be released as the first single from the album has helped to fuel the tension between the band and their record label, which has led to Oasis not renewing their contract with the record label following the release of Don't Believe the Truth.
Lyla became the band's seventh UK number one when it reached top spot in its first week of release. The song also debuted at #31 on the US Modern Rock Tracks chart and has reached #19 since then. It is the first Oasis song to appear on any US singles chart since 2000 when Go Let It Out hit number 14 on the Modern Rock chart.
Noel has also joked with the fact that the Lyla in the song is actually the sister of the Sally mentioned in the Oasis single Don't Look Back in Anger. Also, he had said that the song is a "love song", being about Sally Cinnamon's sister.
Originally claiming that he wasn't very fond of the song, Noel has said that Lyla "isn't even the fifth best track on the album". The song had existed as a demo since the early recording sessions for the album but was all but forgotten until practically the last minute. However, on the Lock the Box feature on the Stop the Clocks, Noel admitted that he "didn't realise how good it was until [we] played it live," and admitted he loved the "guitars, the drums, and the vocals" of the song.
Live performances
When performing on the UK music chart show Top of the Pops, Liam, who was forced to mime to the music, made no secret of the fact, walking away from the microphone with his mouth closed mid-way through lines that he was supposedly 'singing'. It would be Liam's last performance on the programme before its demise in late 2006. However, Noel and the rest of the band would return in August 2005 to perform The Importance of Being Idle and later in 2009 to perform their last ever released single Falling Down.
Lyla was covered by the Foo Fighters during a performance at BBC Studios.
The song is included on Oasis' compilation album Stop the Clocks. It is also included in FIFA 06 as a track.

Rock wildman Liam Gallagher has found an oasis of calm — the Chelsea Flower Show.
He will attend the annual gardening event on the same day as the Queen.
The ex-Oasis frontman, 40, asked for tickets to a VIP preview day of the show, which is celebrating its 100th year.
A source said: “Liam is one of the most unlikely guests in the event’s history.
“His rampaging days are definitely over — which is a relief to organisers given the importance of some guests.”
Liam — set to release a new album with his band Beady Eye — is better known for planting one on photographers, than for planting seeds.
He is not the only pop star due at Monday’s preview, where attractions range from The Sun’s garden to stands selling botanical etchings.
Veterans Rod Stewart and Ringo Starr, plus singer Lily Allen are also due to attend.

Oasis brothers united as Liam and Noel want City to stick with Mancini despite Cup defeat
The Gallagher brothers may have been at odds for years but there is one thing Liam and Noel can agree on and that is that Roberto Mancini should remain as manager of their beloved Manchester City.
The former Oasis pair were both at Wembley – separately - to watch City lose the FA Cup final to Wigan and put on record their support for Mancini.
The Italian's days at City looked numbered after it was reported over the weekend that Malaga coach Manuel Pellegrini was being lined up at the Etihad.
But both Gallagher brothers want to see Mancini remain at the club.
Speaking before the final, Beady Eye frontman Liam told ESPN: ‘I think Mancini should stay. Mancini has won us the league for the first time in 40 years, as well as The FA Cup.
‘I’m not into this [idea of] getting rid of people, you need some consistency, so I’m all for Mancini.
And older brother Noel seemed to be singing from the same song sheet as he backed Mancini to stay after the defeat by Wigan.
He told FA TV: ‘What really annoys me is losing gives every justification for Mancini to lose his job. It gives people a reason to do it, which is a shame because I think he should stay.’
Before the game Noel had been full of confidence, boldly predicting that City could win with eight men with either Sergio Aguero or Carlos Tevez netting a hat-trick.
He said: ‘We should beat this lot with eight men and I think we are going to see a hat-trick today, either Carlos or Aguero.’
But by the end of the game Gallagher Snr was full of praise for Wigan after their win, saying: ‘Fair play to them for sticking at it. I thought they would blow out after 75 minutes, so respect for them for going for it.
'It sums up our season really, we were 20-odd goals short in league and we could not stick it in the back of the net today.’
