Noel Gallagher On The Idea Of Writing His Autobiography

Noel Gallagher spoke to Frank Skinner on Absolute Radio about writing his autobiography.

He said “I've been offered. quite a bit of money.  But a few friends of mine have written books, for example, Johnny Marr, and it went on for years, I would say, "What are you up to?"  "Oh, still writing a book!"  And I was like, "I'm never gonna write a book, if it takes this long!"  And I was saying to him.  "How d'you go about it?"  And he was saying, "Well, you devote four or five hours a day to it."  I was like, "Four or five hours a day!"  It's like being back at school, I suppose you could take the Keith Richards approach where you get someone else to write it.”

“But then it's someone else's words - I don't know.  I did a tour blog once, which just freaked me out, it's like they'd call me and say, "Have you got your blog ready for today?"  I'm like, "I've gotta come up with another one of these things!  I have to make stories up now!"

“Maybe one day.  I'd have to sell the idea to myself really.”

Noel Gallagher On 'Don't Look Back In Anger' Being An “Anthem For Defiance”

Noel Gallagher spoke to Frank Skinner on Absolute Radio and said Don't Look Back In Anger' is an “anthem for defiance” following the Manchester bombings earlier this year.

He said “It was amazing how people rallied round that song in the days after that, it was quite a thing.  I get asked about it a lot, and I have been doing it recently and it almost gives me goosebumps really, that in the days after that, politicians' words weren't enough.  The comforting words from experts on the news weren't enough, people rallied round a song, like old school.  And the night I did it in Manchester, you've got these mixed emotions of ‘you live for these moments where what you've created has gone into people's lives.  So you're there, and it's for all the wrong reasons.  So, that song is, without it being an extraordinary song, it's an extraordinary thing, because for 20 years it was a song of no regrets, it's about a girl who's, maybe, was toasting her life passing her by, and now it's become this anthem for defiance”

Noel Gallagher Explains The Oasis Fan-Cycle And Getting Them To Accept A New Style

Noel Gallagher spoke to Frank Skinner on Absolute Radio about the the Oasis fan-cycle and getting them to accept a new style.

He said “They do have a sense of ownership of your thing.  It's like with this record now, that's coming out, it's quite different to what I do, it's more electronic, people singing in French.  The thing with Oasis is, it generates a new generation of fans every five or six years, and it feels like there's a generation that's come along now and they're really young, and they have an image of what they think you should be and they take ownership of it.”

“It’s definitely nice and all that, but when you're in the studio creating something, you can't think: what do my fans want?  You can't think that.  So, when you go to do the gigs, as long as you can play what you want, then you play what they want as well, you know, you give them a blast from the past then you’re all good”

“When you go and see Paul McCartney, it's like, imagine if he only did Wings' stuff, you'd be like: alright, we get it, come on, but... you know.  Give us A Hard Day's Night.”

Noel Gallagher Has Two Albums Worth Of Songs Ready To Go

Noel Gallagher spoke to Frank Skinner on Absolute Radio and told him he has two albums worth of songs ready to go.

He said “My producer, David Holmes, he just refused any song that I'd written outside of the studio, he didn't want to know.  He wanted to be there, at the genesis of this idea, and then he would point me in a different direction.”

“Every time I would come up with stuff that sounded remotely like Oasis, or what I'd done before, he would stop me and say, "We've heard all that, you can do that next time.  Why don't we focus on this germ of electronic music, and turn that into a song?"  And I found it, for the first 18 months, 2 years, quite frustrating, because I've got a bank of songs at home, completed, ready to go out, I've got another two albums worth, easy.  I've got a lot of songs that just need knocking into shape.  But David Holmes would stroke my ego by saying, "The acoustic guitar thing, you're the greatest!  You're the best in the world, nobody can touch you, but... you know, I don't like it!" …okay, well, okay - pass me the synthesiser.”

Oasis Days Paying Off For Noel Gallagher

Noel Gallagher spoke to Frank Skinner on Absolute Radio about getting free rides in taxis.

He siad “I think it's great! You have to be of the mindset that, if you're hailing a black cab, 99% certainty that the guy who pulls over is gonna be an Oasis fan. And, you know, "I won't charge you! You're given me so many great memories, son!", you know what I mean, "I won't charge you!" they say. It's like £2.60. "No, it's on me mate!" "Oh, thanks!"I saved 2.60 there.”

Listen To Noel Gallagher's Confessions

Noel Gallagher, you might have noticed over the 20 years or so he's been at the summit of British guitar music, doesn't mince his words. Oasis may be behind him, but he remains as potent a pop culture force as ever – in part for his acerbic commentary on the rest of the pop culture around him. Jack White, for instance, "looks like Zorro on doughnuts." Radiohead are "less rock 'n' roll than my cat." Gallagher would also "rather drink petrol straight from the nozzle at a garage than listen to an interview with Alex Turner." And don't get him started on his brother.

With psychedelic new album Who Built The Moon? out today, we thought we'd ask the guitarist some important questions. What's the worst thing about the music industry? What are the dos-and-don'ts of touring? What drug is the best drug? Who's been his favorite celebrity encounter? And what's the best swear word? For the answers to these and more, dig into our latest episode of Confessions.

Noel Gallagher On 'Fort Knox'

Speaking to Radio X yesterday Noel Gallagher talked about 'Fort Knox' that appears on 'Who Built The Moon?'

He said “There’s an alarm clock halfway through the song… I’m not sure why but it felt right, it felt like a wake-up call to people who have been listening to my music for the past 25 years. I’ve got to say, people who’ve been following what I do, they shouldn’t be too surprised. The Right Stuff and Mighty I and What A Life… were kind of not what you’d associate with what I did in Oasis. And of course working with Goldie and the Chemical Brothers in the past… but it makes me think there’s a new generation of Oasis fans who’ve come along, who are not aware of that. Like 15 year olds who’ve come along with an idea of what you should be, who’ve clearly watched Supersonic recently and have probably all got Union Jack guitars and all that, bless ‘em. It’s a great way to start the record, it’s going to be a great way to start the gigs.”

Noel Gallagher On 'It's A Beautiful World'

Speaking to Radio X yesterday Noel Gallagher talked about 'It's A Beautiful World' that appears on 'Who Built The Moon?'

He said “Beautiful World is not really a song about how beautiful the world is, it's a sarcastic song about how beautiful the world is. The video that I've made for it already should say a lot about it. There are some great remixes of it by Andrew Weatherall and Mike Pickering and Graeme Park. Andy's done this real deep, acid rock version of it, and Mike and Graeme have done this Haçienda classic version of it - I was listening to it the other day, actually, and it's incredible. It sounds like Can, that's all I'm saying, the German band, Can.”

Noel Gallagher On 'Dead In The Water'

Speaking to Radio X yesterday Noel Gallagher talked about 'Dead In The Water' that appears  as a bonus track on 'Who Built The Moon?'

He said “I was doing a radio session in Ireland and no more than a few days earlier, I’d written that song in under two hours. I hadn’t played it to anyone. So I was sat with headphones on and the sound in the room was so amazing that while the engineer was messing around with this mike, I just started singing it for myself. I forgot all about it, fast forward the album’s finished, the inevitable question: have you got any bonus material? I said, We didn’t record any B-side material. Then someone in my office, Said what about that song you did that day in Dublin? The one about the water? He got in touch and they said Oh yeah, we recorded it. My jaw hit the floor - what’s special is that I’m singing it for myself. I listened to it and thought, It has to go on the album because I want to play it live.”

Noel Gallagher On 'If Love Is The Law'

Speaking to Radio X yesterday Noel Gallagher talked about 'If Love Is The Law' that appears on 'Who Built The Moon?'

He said “David was like, it needs a guitar thing and some lift towards the end. When someone says that to me, I call Johnny Marr! He’s one of my oldest friends, he’s very gracious with his time. Not a lot of people know that he’s got a guitar shaped phone in his house, that only I have the number for - when it rings, it glows red and white, he knows it’s me. He picks it up and says ‘The Boy Wonder. What can I do for you?’ I’m afraid, Batman, it’s that time again. It still blows my mind that he would even come and help us with a track.”

Noel Gallagher On 'Holy Mountain'

Speaking to Radio X yesterday Noel Gallagher talked about 'Holy Mountain' that appears on 'Who Built The Moon?'

He said “Of all the things that I’ve read, the one thing that was never played to me in the studio was Ricky Martin. She Bangs. There’s the phrasing of the word She, that’s it! I understand people have got mundane jobs and they’ve got nothing better to do, commenting on stuff. It’s got a bit of Diamond Dogs in there, some Roxy Music doing Canned Heat, it’s got The Ice Cream, it’s got Plastic Bertrand. But when you’re making up stuff in the studio, and the clock’s ticking… it’s a way of working that I thought I’d never be into. This is pure expression, this is not thinking at all. It’s David jumping out of his chair, saying Do that again! It’s a real collaboration. He’s all about vibe, and I’m all about the songs, it was him going out there and me pulling it back, it’s a combination of both our styles.”

Noel Gallagher On 'Black & White Sunshine'

Speaking to Radio X yesterday Noel Gallagher talked about 'Black & White Sunshine' that appears on 'Who Built The Moon?'

He said “Of all the tracks on the album, this is the most traditional rock-pop thing that I do. I love this track live, it sounds like the Pistols live, there’s a bit of a nod to the Stones in there, The riff is very West Coast LA - sounds a bit like R.E.M. to be honest. I think it’ll be a live favourite for a while."

Noel Gallagher On 'Be Careful What You Wish For'

Speaking to Radio X yesterday Noel Gallagher talked about 'Be Careful What You Wish For' that appears on 'Who Built The Moon?'

He said “The first two verses are a message to my children. About be careful, chasing fame, money, drugs, that sort of thing. David said, just put it out there, just write as many verses as you can, like Dylan. I wrote so many verses for that song, It was really long at one point, and I said this can’t be nine minutes long, so we edited it down. It’s gonna challenge perceptions of what it is I do. The challenge for me is on the tour, how do we get Be Careful what You Wish For and Half The World Away - that couldn’t be more different - to work in the same night and everyone goes home happy?”
