Liam Gallagher On His Love For 'The Verve'

Liam Gallagher has spoken to the NME Gold about one of his favourite bands The Verve, he said that he loved them and that they don't make bands like them anymore.

"The first time I saw The Verve was in Manchester, at the Hop & Grape or somewhere like that. They were fucking heavy in the early days. I loved touring with them with Oasis. Whereas we were a bit more punky, they were out there: more a jam thing. I just remember Ashcroft having his socks and shoes off and all that. I saw Richard recently, we were both doing a gig in Finland: he was on fire. His voice has got really gnarly. and he was on his hands and knees, good energy about him".

He added "A lot of people, proper verve heads, didn't like 'Urban Hymns' but I think there's some amazing songs on that. Before they didn't have that 'Blue' is an amazing song, but all the songs on 'Urban Hymns' are great. I remember when it was kicking off for them, we were in America, and hearing about it. It was like. 'What's going on with this? better get back to England and sort this shit out.' But I loved them, I really did. They don't make them like that anymore."

Liam Gallagher Wants Oasis, The Verve And The Stone Roses To Play A Gig Together

Liam Gallagher has revealed that he’s been trying “for years” to book a gig featuring Oasis, The Stone Roses and The Verve, also hinting at “something big” coming next summer.

The former Oasis frontman releases his debut solo album ‘As You Were’ this Friday (October 6), but took to Twitter earlier today (October 4) to tell a fan how he wants the three bands to unite for one big gig. “What a night,” he said, “Some people need to get [off their] high chairs”.

“So many extraordinary people on this planet,” Liam added. “We need to come together, c’mon music is power”.

Gallagher also teased his plans for an event next summer, saying: “Stay tuned but I’m gonna round up the troops for something… all are welcome”.

“Now we have your attention, stay tuned, we are family, Gallagher vibes in the area,” he went on to tweet.

After denying any feud with The Stone Roses earlier this year, Gallagher recently said that he would love to form a supergroup with them and Richard Ashcroft.

“Anyone that would be in a supergroup or that would have anything to do with a supergroup are all solo,” said Gallagher. “There’s far too many solo stars out there for my liking and not enough bands. I’m doing this cause I have to. I’d much prefer to be in a band.”

Liam added: “The ideal ones would be the guys out of The Stone Roses. I think they just split up, so that would be good. [Richard] Ashcroft would be good. There’s a lot of people out there, but the majority of them are all doing their own thing. But, if they want to do one, give us a shout. I’ll do it.”

Noel Gallagher Says Music Was Much ‘Freer’ In The ’90s

Noel Gallagher has said that life and music was much ‘freer’ in the ’90s – and that today’s bands need to be a lot more ‘business-minded’.

Yesterday saw Gallagher announce his return with his upcoming new High Flying Birds Album ‘Who Built The Moon?’, along with details of a huge UK and Ireland arena tour. During an interview with Christian O’Connell on the Absolute Radio Breakfast Show, he discussed how the music industry and the general climate for bands has changed since the Britpop heyday when Oasis were at their peak.

“If you’re 20, and you’re entering the music business now, you won’t know what’s gone before,” said Gallagher. “So for a 20 year old you won’t realise, but the ‘90’s, it’s only now people are starting to realise what a fantastic decade that was, for all sorts of things, for politics, fashion, music, sport.

“There’s lots of stuff that’s stood the test of time, Trainspotting as you mentioned for one, and all those great bands, Oasis, Verve, Pulp, all that mob. It was a lot freer then for sure. When I meet younger bands they seem to have more of a career head on. Whereas back in the ‘90’s it was just you were kind of winging it and having a laugh.”

He added: “I think, but that comes from the people who run the music business I think. The success, and how many hits you’ve got on YouTube and this that and the other, and it’s a different game, it’s a different game for sure.”

In the same interview, Noel Gallagher discussed another big night he had out with Morrissey – who described as a ‘dude’ who took a shine to his wife. He also discussed the extent of his drunken antics (and painful hangovers) while recently on tour with U2.

Gallagher will release his third solo album ‘Who Built The Moon?’ on Friday November 24, before a huge arena tour follows next year.

Richard Ashcroft On Liam Gallagher's Cameo On The Verve‘s ‘Urban Hymns’

Richard Ashcroft has spoken out about Liam Gallagher‘s ‘secret cameo’ on The Verve‘s classic album, ‘Urban Hymns’.

It has long been known that the former Oasis frontman leant backing vocals on the track ‘Come On’, but there has also been a mystery surrounding what exactly it is that he sings. Now, Ashcroft has opened up about the album’s various jokes and mysteries.

“I mean there’s lots of jokes within the album,” Ashcroft told BBC 6 Music. “Liam Gallagher is on the last track ‘Come On’. I don’t think anyone knows this, but if you concentrate you can hear some demented guy screaming ‘come on’. I imagine everyone thinks that’s me, but I remember him doing it.

“He arrived at the studio with the tape of a song he’d just done with [Stone Roses’ guitarist] John Squire. He proceeded, as he does, to play it 15 times in a row in the studio. I played him ‘Bittersweet [Symphony]’, then I said ‘we’re doing ‘Come On’ now, you gotta be on it. He went into this booth with someone else, and he was going ballistic at the end of it – smashing the tambourine against the side of the vocal booth, screaming.”

The Verve will be celebrating 20 years of ‘Urban Hymns’ with a deluxe reissue on September 1.

Noel Gallagher On Harry Styles And Signing For The Greatest Record Label Of All Time

The Oasis guitarist was speaking at a Q&A session before a screening of 'Supersonic' at William's Green

Noel Gallagher has said that Oasis may have “ruined it” for the current generation of artists in terms of creating great rock star stories, quipping: “Harry Styles isn’t going to be fucking coked up at Glastonbury, is he?”

The guitarist was speaking at a short Q&A at Glastonbury this evening (June 23) before a screening of the Oasis documentary Supersonic at William’s Green.

Asked for his take on why musicians and bands seems to be more “well-behaved” in comparison to Oasis’ heyday, Gallagher said that the band weren’t affected by pressure from their label or the music industry in general at the time.

“We were signed by the greatest record label [Creation] there ever was,” he said. “Alan McGee [who signed Oasis to Creation] did not give a fuck whatsoever – we gave less of a fuck than him. Minus fucks were given.

“I think bands like Oasis, Primal Scream and The Verve – we might have ruined it. Because if your share price depends on us… well, then you can fuck off. Harry Styles isn’t going to be fucking coked up at Glastonbury. So we might have ruined it for the next generation. But fuck it, you know what I mean? You weren’t there.”

Is Richard Ashcroft Helping Liam Gallagher Assemble His Live Band?

A source has told Radio X's Gordon Smart that Mr. Ashcroft has played an important role in Liam's new band.

Richard Ashcroft has helped Liam Gallagher put his new band together. Speaking with Radio X's Gordon Smart, a source has revealed that The Verve frontman was highly involved with putting together musicians for Liam's new solo project.

Ashcroft has previously said he plans on performing with Liam across the summer. Asked whose offer he would accept if both Liam and his brother Noel Gallagher asked, Ashcroft replied to Q magazine:  "I would have to politely tell them both that I had something else on and stay at home.

"I played a show with Noel a few months ago and I'm playing with Liam later in the year."

A source has also revealed to Radio X what tracks Liam Gallagher plans to perform live, which include Whatever, D'You Know What I Mean, My Big Mouth and ballad Don't Go Away. Plus, we can expect Beady Eye's Flick of the Finger and The World's Not Set In Stone.

It looks like Liam's live return is going to be something very special indeed. Although no UK live dates have been announced yet, the Oasis legend has confirmed shows at Norway's Bergenfest, Serbia's Exit Festival, Lollapolooza Paris and Spain's Benicassim Festival.

The former Oasis frontman has yet to announce a release date for the album, but we do know that he's steering clear of stadium rock, and instead focusing on a more acoustic sound. Take a look at What We Can Expect From Liam Gallagher's Solo Album now.

Liam Gallagher To Play A Concert With Richard Ashcroft Later This Year

The former Oasis frontman is set to launch his solo career this year, and his close friend and fellow rocker has let slip that they will be performing live together at some point in 2017.

Asked whose offer he would accept if both Liam and his brother Noel Gallagher - his former bandmate who he has barely spoken to since Oasis ended in 2009 - Richard said: "I would have to politely tell them both that I had something else on and stay at home.

"I played a show with Noel a few months ago and I'm playing with Liam later in the year."

Richard - who became pals with Liam when he was fronting fellow British band The Verve, with the two acts regularly touring together in the 90s - won't be giving Liam any advice on going it alone, but thinks his return to music will be welcomed as there are few people as outspoken as the 'Songbird' singer.

The 'Lucky Man' singer told Q magazine: "I wouldn't be daft enough to give Liam any advice on going solo. He can just be himself and do what he loves and people will connect to it. We miss those characters, these people with an opinion. Most people just don't [give an opinion] unless they believe they're getting some sort of PC credit. Then they're out there, appeal after appeal, holding babies and making everyone feel really guilty and miserable around Christmas."

To date, 44-year-old Liam's only announced solo show is at Bergenfest in Norway in June, but Richard, 45, is not one of the artists currently named on the bill.

Richard inspired Oasis' track 'Cast No Shadow' from their seminal 1995 album '(What's The Story) Morning Glory?' but he admits he has no idea what Noel, 49, meant by the lyrics.

He said: "I think it's one of the best tunes Noel's ever written as well.

"It's a great honor to be a part of that and then when the album exploded like that it was just great. I was buzzing. I think it was almost an afterthought [for Noel] but there were so many gags at the time because I was so thin, 'Is it because he's so thin that he casts no shadow, is that what it's about?'

"I did say to him, 'Am I a vampire? What are you trying to say, man?'"

Richard Ashcroft Wants To Work With Noel and Liam Gallagher On A Musical With Oasis

Your dream of a Britpop jukebox musical will come true if Richard Ashcroft has anything to do with it.

The Verve frontman wants to work with Oasis stars Noel and Liam Gallagher on a musical, and has already thought about its structure and story, as well as joking that he'd play himself.

"I'd like to do a musical of our songs combined, in a story of both our youths and the combination at the end, and the fact that we have both crossed paths, been mates, looked after each other," Ashcroft told Noisey.

Last year, Noel said he "should make a record" with the Verve frontman but for Ashcroft, he'll work with both of them or neither of them.

"The pros are [Noel is] an amazing songwriter. So if I get 50% on the publishing then it's obviously cha-ching for both of us," Ashcroft explained. "But there's a lot of negatives working with either of them and not working with the other one. It's like being a brother in the middle."

Ashcroft's next collaboration will be with The Who as a special guest at the Isle of Wight Festival, where he'll perform songs from his new solo album These People.

Noel Gallagher On Oasis' Some Might Say Demo

Below is an interview with Noel Gallagher who talks to Fran Healy from Travis about the demo for 'Some Might Say'.

Liam Gallagher Tweets Praise For Richard Ashcroft But Says Noel Is 'Still A C**k'

Former Oasis wildman Liam got out of the wrong side of his bed this morning and Noel bore the brunt.

Liam Gallagher has had an eventful morning on Twitter paying tribute to rock pal Richard Ashcroft and calling big brother Noel a C-word.

Liam's Twitter was in meltdown on Brits night as he bemoaned the state of some of the acts (fair comment our kid).

He tweeted: "Music in the UK has been abducted by massive c**ks. The end. LG x."

He added: "Thank f*** I got out when I got out out. LG."

This morning he turned his attentions to Verve front man Richard Ashcroft who was presumably on the radio.

He then tweeted Verve lyrics like "I hope you understand, I've got a love that never dies" from their smash hit Lucky man.

But just when you think Liam was all benevolent to his fellow man he tweeted "pass the wine."

And again.

Before addressing his brother Noel (we're assuming it wasn't addressed to Paul Gallagher) as he informed his sibling he was "still a c**k bruv."

We're glad to see the Brothers Gallagher are still as close as ever after all these years.

Liam Gallagher Compared To Kanye West Following Another Rant On Twitter

Former Oasis rocker Liam Gallagher has launched into another expletive-laden rant on Twitter – leaving fans scratching their heads.

Liam, who last week exploded into a tirade after watching the Brits, has been at it again – prompting baffled fans to wonder if he’s “doing a Kanye” in reference to rapper Kanye West who is known for his Twitter outpourings.

Last night he started off by tweeting about the Carl Frampton and Scott Quigg fight, describing Bury boxer Quigg as a “Rock n Roll star” in reference to one of the Manchester band’s famous songs.

Then this morning he turned his attention to The Verve front man Richard Ashcroft, quoting from their massive hit Lucky Man and tweeting: “Ashcroft gives power get up you bunch of lazy tarts.”

He followed this with “kill the squares”, “big up Dave Malik”, “pass me down the wine” and finally “Still a **** bruv.”

His tweets caused one fan to tweet in reply: “get back to sleep its sunday x” and another quipped: “LG chill out wie the tweets man ur no Kanye.”

Another pointed out: “Liam Gallagher is doing what’s known in Twitterland as a ‘Kanye’ this morning.”

After the Brits on Wednesday Liam was looking back in anger as he passed his opinion on the annual ceremony, condemning the music industry in an expletive-laden tirade, asking: “Where do I ******* start?” before blasting: “Music in the UK has been abducted by massive ***** THE END” signing off with a kiss and his initials LG.

Richard Ashcroft Is Open To Working With Noel Gallagher

The Verve frontman Richard Ashcroft has suggested that he would be open to working with Noel Gallagher, telling NME in a new interview: "in the future who knows what might happen".

Ashcroft speaks to NME in an exclusive cover feature in this week's magazine (available now, free in the UK).

Ahead of releasing new album 'These People' on May 14, Ashcroft bemoaned the current state of the music industry, saying that he's "got no faith in it whatsoever".

He continued: "It’s sold itself up the river, stabbed people in the back instead of trying to create a good, solid British music alternative. Turn left for Cowell, turn right for this. The mainstream consumed our culture."

"You can get as many songwriters in a room as you want for your new talent show contest winner, it’s never gonna sound like a great Noel Gallagher song sung by Liam, it’s never gonna reach ‘Live Forever’, it’s never gonna be [Verve song] ‘Lucky Man’. We know that."

Last year, Noel Gallagher said he’d be interested in making an album with Ashcroft.

Asked whether he would work with Gallagher, Ashcroft replied: "It’s a great compliment for Noel to say something like that, and in the future who knows what might happen. I wish things like this would’ve happened years ago."

Ashcroft went on to speak of his fondness for his Britpop peers, saying: "Even the guys we had a bit of friction with, I look back and wish them luck. If I hear [Pulp frontman] Jarvis Cocker on the radio it gives me a good feeling. He’s waving a flag for culture from that time. We’re not stopping."

Noel Gallagher: I Saw The End Of Brit Pop

Noel Gallagher revealed he saw the end up Brit Pop before it fizzled out.

The songwriter's former group Oasis were the biggest band to emerge from the rock sub genre than came from the UK in the 90s and although it was a very special time for music he knew it was the end era.

He said: ''It was an anniversary of something recently and somebody showed me a list of the album chart back them and in one week, it was Oasis, The Verve The Manics, Pulp and Blur, were like at least five of the top ten, and had been for most of that year. And I felt, I remember saying at the time that that era was the end of something, that that would be the last time that something like that would happen. There just isn't that culture any more. I have a 15-year-old daughter who is like, 'Albums? They take too much time just give me the track man.'

''I guess it was the end of pop music as we knew it and then the internet came along and bingo.''

Meanwhile, the 48-year-old musician added that he was inspired to write albums with B sides by the soul and rock groups of the '60s, such as The Kinks, The Rolling Stones and The Beach Boys.

He told Steve Lamaq on BBC Radio Six: ''We were all derived from, maybe not so much The Manics, but we certainly were derived from those pop records and The Verve were the same and Blur probably.''

Review: Noel Gallagher At The Royal Albert Hall

Noel Gallagher is the father of modern Brit rock; the mixture of songwriting style, soundscape and appeal for broad audiences he pursued with Oasis influenced the scene that later gave birth to Coldplay, Arctic Monkeys, The Killers (born in the US, bred in the UK), The Verve, Travis and Stereophonics, who all consequently influenced a newer generation. In the 90s Oasis took the rock sceptre, stolen by Nirvana, and brought it back to England.

Although the Manchester band broke up in 2009, they still cast a shadow over Noel Gallagher’s successful solo career, which everybody respects but also secretly believes to be a filler until he reunites with his brother.

“This one is dedicate to all the Oasis fans,” he says before beginning to play the melancholic uptempo You Know We Can’t Go Back – a clear message to his fans.

However, the concert began way before that, because Noel Gallagher wasn’t only the headliner tonight but also the support act, which he played in an acoustic version with his right-hand man (and former Oasis guitarist) Gem Archer.

Between the two sets, Gallagher played numerous hits from the band and his two solo albums. Highlights of the night are Slide Away (acoustic), Lock All the Doors, Whatever and If I Had a Gun. This year what used to be a fan favourite, Half the World Away, cleverly utlised by John Lewis for their Christmas advert, is now a charting hit that everyone sings along. “I leave you with this. Merry fucking Christmas.”

In a sold-out Royal Albert Hall, stage for his pre-Christmas show ahead of the 2016 tour, the encore serves as a third act.

“It’s been an absolutely dream-come-true to play with myself tonight. A privilege, a honour. Give it it up to the support anyway, they were fucking brilliant,” he jokes with his trademark humour. The Masterplan opens the finale which is a tight sequence of hits: AKA…What a Life and the timeless masterpiece Don’t Look Back in Anger.

Verdict:  *****

Pretty Green's Manchester Store Hosts Britpop Exhibition

An Exhibition Of Classic British Record Covers From The 1990s Is To Open At Oasis Star Liam Gallagher's Clothes Store.

The collection of work by photographer Brian Cannon, encompassing the era dubbed 'Britpop', will go on display at a branch of Pretty Green in Manchester, England from Friday (16Oct15).

It will feature the iconic covers that adorned the first two Oasis albums, as well as other well-known rock artwork from the era, including Suede single So Young and the band's album Dog Man Star, Super Furry Animals' first album Fuzzy Logic, and 1977, the debut disc from Ash.

Other Oasis covers in the exhibition include those for their singles All Around the World, Stand By Me, Cigarettes & Alcohol, and Some Might Say, which featured Cannon's parents in the image.

Speaking at the launch, Cannon recalled working with Oasis as they were on the cusp of superstardom, telling the Manchester Evening News, "Nobody knew who they were back then but I think they genuinely did believe that they were something else, that they would be stratospherically big.

"Quality doesn't always guarantee success but they were just brilliant. They really were something else. I just felt it and I thought it would be a travesty if they didn't make it big...

"Don't believe everything you read about them. They were very enthusiastic and totally into it - not just the music but the artwork itself as well. I would have creative meetings with (guitarist) Noel (Gallagher), I'd give him some pointers and he'd come back with some ideas. I got him and he got me. Nothing ever got rejected or re-shot."

The exhibition, which will also feature other rarities including unseen photographs and several handwritten notes from The Verve rocker Richard Ashcroft, runs until the end of October (15).

Noel Gallagher Says New Bands Are Scared Of Social Media

Noel Gallagher has said that new bands are "careerist" and are afraid to be outspoken because they're scared of the backlash on social media.

During a round table interview with the NME, which also included Jason Williamson of Sleaford Mods and Elly Jackson of La Roux, Gallagher was asked why so many bands have so little to say.

"It's because they're s**t scared of social media! They're s**t scared of somebody killing it before it's started. One of the main differences for me is that bands these days are careerists.

"I know for a fact that nobody in Primal Scream ever thought about a career, or Oasis, or The Verve. Everybody was thinking, 'We're having a great time, this is amazing!'"

"I know for a fact that nobody in Primal Scream ever thought about a career, or Oasis, or The Verve. Everybody was thinking, 'We're having a great time, this is amazing!'

Noel Gallagher Blames Arctic Monkeys, Kasabian And Bastille For The State Of English Music

Noel Gallagher has spoken about the lack of working-class voices in contemporary music, suggesting the likes of Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian have made no impact in terms of encouraging any new “noise coming from the council estates”.

During an interview for the BBC Master Tapes show, via NME, a member of the audience questioned the Oasis founder about the health of the current British music scene. “You only have to look at the charts, what happened at the end of the 90s, all those bands used to be in the top 10, like us, Manics, Pulp, the Verve, Suede and Blur, and I think bands like that have been marginalised and sidelined,” he said. “There’s X Factor and all that kind of thing, but you name me the last great band that came out of this country? There’s not really been any great bands in the last 10 years.”

Specifically lamenting the lack of exciting bands (adding that One Direction were “not a band” but a group), Gallagher said that Arctic Monkeys and Kasabian had done little in the last decade to expand the variety of musicians operating in an increasingly middle-class music industry: "Shame on those two bands for a start because they didn’t inspire anybody else. The working classes have not got a voice any more. There doesn’t seem to be a noise coming from the council estates, you know what I mean?

I’d have eaten Bastille alive in an afternoon in the 90s, one interview, destroyed, gone, never to be heard of again. Easy, had ’em for breakfast. My bass player summed it up – we’re constantly saying: ‘Where is the next band coming from?’ and he rightly says: ‘Never mind the band, where are the people?’”

Gallagher added: “When I first started I wanted to get in the charts and wreck it, like stamp Phil Collins out and Wet Wet Wet, they’ve got to go, and all that 80s gear, we don’t need that any more. I don’t see anything from the working class, I just don’t see it.”

The musician’s recent statements echo his comments from a 2013 interview in weekly men’s magazine Shortlist, claiming that it was only the “middle-class” bands that refused to play at Teenage Cancer Trust gigs taking place at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

The new album from Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Chasing Yesterday, is released in March.
