Watch Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds On Later Live... With Jools Holland

Tonight, 22:00 on BBC Two and BBC HD (UK Only)

Joining Jools on this last programme in the current series are: LA's own alternative rock/funk superstars Red Hot Chili Peppers with songs from their tenth studio album I'm With You, and Iceland's biggest musical export Bjork with pieces from her newest album Biophilia. The album began as a true interactive experience and combined music with technological innovation and themes of science and nature, and was the first-ever 'app album'. It has also now surfaced as a traditional release.

Also in the studio, from Burnage, Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds with songs from his debut album, which made it to number one in the UK album chart.

Making their TV debuts on the show are East London's answer to The Strokes, Spector, who perform a couple of their sparkly pop tunes, and also from London, Michael Kiwanuka, a 23-year-old son of Ugandan immigrants whose sound has been compared to Bill Withers and Van Morrison.

Completing the series, from Nashville, singer songwriter Gillian Welch, joined by her musical partner and guitarist Dave Rawlings on a couple of songs from her album The Harrow and the Harvest.

An extra show will be broadcast on Friday with more songs from the artists.

Noel And Liam Gallagher Were Probably On Hacking List, Says Alan McGee

Alan McGee has suggested that Noel Gallagher and Liam Gallagher were probably targeted by those hacking phones at the News of the World.

The ex-Creation Records boss, who signed the brothers' band Oasis to his label in 1993, wrote in a Huffington Post blog that it was unlikely that they were not targets.

McGee said: "If I am on the list, then personally I find it impossible to think that people like Noel and Liam won't be too as more names are revealed.

"Of course I will try to sue News International, as they deserve all of the grief and bad publicity possible for what they have done to people."

Of his name being found in Glenn Mulcaire's notebook, McGee added: "I sent Noel Gallagher a text to tell him I was on the hack list. I think he fancies being on it too.

"All they would have got from my voicemail in August 2005 were the ramblings of Courtney Love. Back then I would regularly wake up to 47 messages from her, which I would delete every day without listening to.

"If I was indeed hacked then Mulcaire would definitely have heard Courtney's messages, poor guy!"

In the blog, McGee also denied recent reports that he had owned a tooth of John Lennon's which was recently bought at an auction.

"It was a funny story, but not true," he said. "Why would I want to own John Lennon's rotten tooth?"

Lord Leveson's inquiry into press ethics continues today.

Noel Gallagher Interview In The Next Edition Of Q Magazine

Noel Gallagher insists he has no musical rivalry with Beady Eye, telling Q he wants Liam's band to "do well".

'The Chief' says he's not in a competition with his younger brother's band.

"I wouldn't like you as journalists to compare my record to U2's or Coldplay's or Beady Eye's. Or anyone else's. Therefore it's not fair for me to compare mine to theirs," he told Q, in an interview you'll be able to read in our new issue Q306, which is out next week (29 November).

"I know you want me to say I danced around on a copy of their album, or that I held them in each hand and had a mock fight between them but I genuinely don't give a shit about that. Gem and Chris Sharrock are still my mates, I've got a lot of friends on their crew. I want them to do well. I don't want to get involved in that shit."

Make sure you get hold of a copy of Q306 from Tuesday, 29 November for the full interview with Noel, including the possibility of an Oasis reunion, news of his album with Amorphous Androgynous and which pop diva he things could cover one of his new solo songs.

Beady Eye In London Review And Gallery

Beady Eye - Live at Brixton Academy, London

‘Definitely Maybe’ was the pinnacle for bombastic Oasis front man, Liam, the stock of older brother Noel rising with their second album, before the subsequent cliff jump of ‘Be Here Now’, and years of drowning in middle-of-the-road mediocrity.

Still, genuine icons are in short supply these days, and in lieu of their emergence, this is the age of reruns and resurrections. Roll out the new-old, and the people will flock. Nostalgia is the new drug of choice.

So, Beady Eye, new-old Oasis, sans Noel, still fronted by Liam – stay with me - stated recently, “Oasis are done; this is something new”, and released their debut album, ‘Different Gear, Still Speeding’, it’s new-old sound, giving a shot in the arm to those lamenting the demise of old Oasis, but shattering any wistful dreams of an avant-garde or aurally expansive new direction.

Not that the old-old, modish, packed Academy crowd cared about a lack of originality. Engaging in baying chants, obligatory beer throwing, they showed no loss of appetite for the posturing of the duffel coated larrikin, the irrepressible outbursts and caustic frontage, a familiar, menacing, if sometimes caricatured, presence. Vocally improved on the late period Oasis offerings, if sporting the same tired Lennon-Lydon scowl, Liam’s power-wail easily carried over the signature wall of noise format.

Nostalgia-bashing aside, the best moments appeared when the band sounded least like the band they used to be - are trying not to be - without actually trying. Opener ‘Four Letter Word’, is a showcase extraordinaire for Liam’s voice, and guitarist Andy Bell’s wah pedal skills. The breezily melodic ‘Millionaire’ benefits from some infectious, slide guitar, whilst the lightly psychedelic, ‘The Morning Son’ hints at some emotional depth.

There’s laudable variation from the Little Richard indebted ‘Bring the Light’, pounded out on bluesy piano, and a demonstration of more svelte song writing on ‘The Beat Goes On’ and ‘Kill for Dream’, inducing indifferent sighs and sympathetic swaying during the obligatory mid-gig slow down – does anyone power on through these days?

However, despite a typically energetic performance, with highs for those in need of a quick fix, there was little that was lastingly memorable. ‘Standing on the Edge of Noise’, was pure swagger and, er, noise, whilst ‘The Roller’, with its Lennon-esque beseeching, “hold on”, begged the question of the band, aren’t you bored of this stuff now? I know we are.

Noel Gallagher talks about when he felt it was time to get working on his next project, Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds.

On This Day In Oasis History...

Stop The Clocks is an album by British rock band Oasis made up of Oasis' favourite songs and moments of their career so far and was released on November 20 2006. “Unlike most albums of this nature, Oasis have sat down and undertaken the almost impossible job of picking what they consider to be their finest moments ever. So 'Stop The Clocks' is imbued with the sort of willfulness that has helped make Oasis the favourite band of millions of people worldwide and its running order will no doubt provoke equal parts adulation and bar discussions from the millions of Oasis fans worldwide. Could it ever be any other way?” . It released in November 2006. The "retrospective collection" is an 18-track double album with the featured songs chosen by Noel Gallagher. It went 3x platinum in the UK with sales as good as any album there since Be Here Now.

The album has come about due to the end of Oasis' recording contract with Sony BMG Music Entertainment. Noel Gallagher has gone on record before on numerous occasions saying that Oasis wouldn't release a greatest hits album unless the band were about to split up. However, in an interview with news.com.au in December 2005, he hinted that Sony were planning to release one anyway, and that despite his misgivings, he would have to get involved with it otherwise it'd be "shit". This was clarified in September 2006, when he told the NME that when he made it clear to Sony that the band were not going to re-sign to them, the record label decided to release a greatest hits album. Gallagher then explained that he insisted that it had to be a 'best-of' because he felt a compilation of the best singles, album tracks and b-sides would produce a stronger album than a compilation of singles.

To address some fans' concerns that the release of a greatest hits album was a sign that the band were about to finish, based on some of Noel Gallagher's previous comments, the press release for the album confirmed that they are merely taking "a well earned sabbatical prior to starting work on new material, destined for similar levels of success in the future. As such, this is not a full stop, but merely a time out; a dream set list, and a chance for the world to review the immense contribution that Oasis have made and continue to make to rock 'n' roll."

To celebrate the release of the album, the band will be unveiling their first full-length film - Lord Don't Slow Me Down, shot during the Don't Believe the Truth world tour, from May 2005 to March 2006, the film was shown in November 2006 around the world in selected picture houses, theatres and cinemas to winners of fans competitions and the press. It was also broadcasted on Channel 4 in the UK.

The album debuted at #2 in the UK charts selling over 50,000 copies in its first day of release and 216,000 in its first week of release, surprisingly not selling enough to knock off the top spot to The Love Album, by the boy-band Westlife. It also debuted at #89 on the U.S. Billboard 200, starting with 18,000 units sold. It did however enter the Japanese Oricon album charts at #1, selling 87,462 copies in its first week.

In Japan, a box set was also released of all their singles to coincide with the album.

The Songs

Stop the Clocks focuses heavily on the band's most popular albums, Definitely Maybe and (What's the Story) Morning Glory?, with each contributing five tracks, plus four B-sides (also included on the band's other compilation album The Masterplan) from this era. Only two tracks appear from Don't Believe the Truth, and one track each from Standing on the Shoulder of Giants and Heathen Chemistry, whilst Be Here Now is overlooked completely.

When the release of Stop the Clocks was first announced in July 2006, speculation was rife that the unreleased song of the same name would be included on the record as a bonus track. However, Noel Gallagher told fans at a Q&A session that the song was considered for inclusion, but they weren't happy with any of the many versions they have recorded.

Gallagher also confirmed that the title was chosen to sum up what was described in the initial press release as being "merely a time out; a chance for the world to review the immense contribution that Oasis have made and continue to make to rock 'n' roll." Noel Gallagher revealed in an interview in April 2005 that 'Stop the Clocks' was the original title for the band's early recorded material in early 2004, which turned eventually into Don't Believe the Truth.

Gallagher revealed to Billboard that he was approached about including some new songs on the album as well, but that he opted not to "because it takes the focus away from what you're actually trying to say with a retrospective."

Gallagher told the NME in September 2006 that he picked the tracks on the album, and there were about eight songs that "should be on there, but aren't". He explained that his original vision was for a 12-track album on one CD, but, after whittling down from an initial 30+ tracks, the track-listing was finalised. He admitted that he's had arguments with people about the tracklisting but that "someone has to pick the tracklisting, and I've picked it and that's the end of it. But that must mean we're pretty good, if people are arguing about what's not on it, it's brilliant!"

During an interview on Radio 1 in October 2006, and later during a question and answer session with The Sun, Liam Gallagher, who got a songwriting credit with his "Songbird", claimed that he was happy with the tracks Noel had selected for the album, although he said that he would have liked "Rockin' Chair" and "D'You Know What I Mean?" to be included. Noel, however, admitted that "D'You Know What I Mean?" was to be included on the album up until the moment it was being mastered, explaining that the length of the song "upset the flow of the album".

In the special boxed-edition of 'Stop the Clocks' at the end of the 'Lock the Box' interview, when Liam was told 'Whatever' was not on the track-listing he said "Thank fuck for that".

Cover

The cover was designed by Sir Peter Blake, best known for his design of the sleeve for The Beatles' album Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band, but also well recognized within the genre for his work on the cover of Paul Weller's Stanley Road album.

According to Blake, he chose all of the objects in the picture at random, but the sleeves of Sgt. Pepper's and Definitely Maybe were in the back of his mind. He claims, "It's using the mystery of Definitely Maybe and running away with it." Familiar cultural icons which can be seen on the cover include Dorothy from Wizard of Oz, Michael Caine (replacing the original image of Marilyn Monroe, which couldn't be used for legal reasons) and the seven dwarfs from Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs.

Blake also revealed that the final cover wasn't the original one. That design featured an image of the shop 'Granny Takes A Trip' on the Kings Road in Chelsea, London.

Yes comrades…

The Royce Hall was / is yet another stunning theatre type thing on the UCLA campus. Two pretty good nights. Strange crowd though. Quite lively the first night, and dead as Dodos the 2nd!!! Why is that? Fuck knows… Very odd though.

Did some interview with CBS Morning News… saying that, it could've been NBC Morning News. Dunno, can't remember. I'd be amazed if either of their viewership had a clue who I was. The interviewer went by the name of Ben Tracy… Ben Tracy?? Wasn't he in the Thunderbirds? He did have some bloody good questions though (that's not sarcasm, by the way).

Was good to be back in Los Angeles. I've grown to love that place. I used to hate it. Didn't get it for years, I like it now though… A sure sign one is getting older, I guess!!

Now, I don't know whether you've seen a story that's doing the rounds about me being offered the job of penning the tune for the new James Bond film? Apparently I'm being courted by "007 bosses"!!!!! A meeting will be "taking place in the next few days"!!!! With some guy called "Michael G. Wilson" (whoever he is)!!! A "source" says, "nothing has been signed or made official"!!!! Of course it fuckin' hasn't!!!!!! Who IS this fuckin' "source"? Has he been on the "sauce"? Bizarre indeed.

You currently find me in San Francisco. Just soundchecked at the Orpheum Theatre.

It's the last night of this particular leg of this particular American tour. Flying home tomorrow. Can't wait. There's shit going on back there and I need to be getting involved in it.

In a bit.

GD.

Review: Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds In Los Angeles

Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds roosted in UCLA’s elegant Royce Hall for two sold out shows Thursday and Friday night, delivering unto us a pair of 90 minute sets (give or take) comprised of every song on his debut solo album as well as a number of beautifully rendered Oasis classics that I for one had honestly forgotten to expect.

Royce Hall’s first-class acoustics maintained every nuance of the set that generally opted for the more intimate, poignant songs rather than the balls-out rockers. Notable exceptions to this of course were AKA… What A Life and (Stranded On) The Wrong Beach from the High Flying Birds album, and Oasis megahit Supersonic. But it was the tweaked, MTV Unplugged version of Wonderwall, along with Talk Tonight, If I Had A Gun, and show-closer Don’t Look Back In Anger that collectively underpinned the evenings.

The most newsworthy moment came at the tail end of the first batch of High Flying Birds songs, when Noel introduced a new song called Freaky Teeth, which he promised would appear on a second solo album to be released sometime next year. If the song is any indication of where that album will wind up sonically, color us excited. Those of you who count Wrong Beach among your favorite HFB songs will love it. The first thing I thought of the sultry, swaggering groove, backed by organs as Noel drawled on about my God and The Devil and my soul, was that it would make a great Bond theme. And it has since been brought to my attention that it was, in fact, designed as precisely that. There are bootlegs of the Royce Hall performances out there already, But in the interest of clarity, here’s a professionally-shot version from BBC Radio Theatre from early this month:

We can’t wait for the High Flying Birds’ sophomore effort, sure to come before we tire of the fantastic debut.
