Standing on the Shoulder of Giants is the fourth studio album by the English rock band Oasis, released on February 28, 2000. In 1999, the year preceding the final release of this album, Oasis had lost two founding members (Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs and Paul "Guigsy" McGuigan) and hired a new producer (Mark "Spike" Stent). As a result of these changes, the album's tone was more experimental, with electronica and psychedelic influences. The darker feeling and psychedelic tone of this album is a departure from earlier Britpop-influenced Oasis records.
Songs such as the Indian-influenced "Who Feels Love?", the progressive "Gas Panic!" and the electronica "Go Let It Out" depart from Oasis' old Britpop style. The album was the sixth fastest selling album in UK chart history, selling over 310,000 copies in its first week. Despite becoming their fourth number one album in the UK, it is one of the band's lowest-selling albums, selling only 3 million copies worldwide.
Trivia
The album's title was taken from the words of Sir Isaac Newton: "If I can see further than anyone else, it is only because I am standing on the shoulders of giants". Noel Gallagher saw the quote on the side of a £2 coin whilst in a pub and liked it so much he thought it would be a suitable name for Oasis' new album. He then wrote the name on the side of a cigarette packet whilst drunk. When he awoke in the morning, he realised he had written "Standing on the Shoulder of Giants — A Bum Title".
Due to the departure of Bonehead and Guigsy from the band whilst the album was in production, their parts had to be re-recorded, for legal reasons. Thus, the album only features the Gallagher brothers and Alan White. The sleeve of the album also features them.
The first track, "Fuckin' in the Bushes", is featured on the soundtrack for the film Snatch, and is regularly used in introductions for high-tempo events, due to its quick tempo and loud volume.
In the April 2006 issue of Q magazine, the album was the only Oasis record to feature in a countdown of the "50 worst albums of all time". It was placed at number 46 and described as "the low point of their fallow years", despite the fact that the album had been favourably reviewed in the magazine at its time of release and featured in the magazine's "50 Best Albums of 2000" list. In response to the Q feature, Noel has said, "Even though it wasn't our finest hour, it's a good album born through tough times. I worked harder on that album than anything before and anything since."
A notable B-Side was Lets All Make Believe. This song was on the Go Let It Out single and is said to be one of the bands finest songs. Q Magazine declared it the greatest ever "lost" track in the February 2007 issue and said that if it was on the album it would have carried "an extra star" on the review. Q gave this album 4 Stars back in 2000, meaning an extra star would be 5 stars. So with Lets All Make Believe on the album, according to Q magazine's logic, SOTSOG would have been a 5 star classic.

A bootleg of demo sessions recorded for this album was leaked onto the internet in January 2000. Most of these songs were recorded by Noel Gallagher with the help of a couple of friends in his home studio at Supernova Heights and at Oasis' own Wheeler End Studios complex. All of the songs, apart from "Little James", were sung by Noel.

As such, these four songs had made-up titles based on commonly-repeated phrases mentioned in the songs. Whilst "Carry Us All" and "Just Getting Older" were correctly guessed, the other two tracks were given titles which, in time, would prove to be incorrect. "Revolution Song" was given the title "Solve My Mystery" and "Let There Be Love" was given the title "It's a Crime". "Let There Be Love" was released on Don't Believe the Truth. Because Noel mentioned in a February 23, 2000 interview with Melody Maker magazine that "Revolution Song" had been demoed — but not released because Blur had recently released a similar sounding song — it can be assumed that these titles are correct.
Currently, only one song ("Revolution Song") remains commercially unreleased.

Courteeners frontman Liam Fray overcame a bout of nerves to perform a special cover of Oasis' B-side D'Yer Wanna Be A Spaceman during the band's acoustic set which also included recent hit You Overdid It Doll.
The singer said: "It's quite daunting covering an Oasis song. There will be comparisons to them but we are not the new Oasis."

Moments after Liam, 37, threw Oasis’s Brit award into the crowd during last week’s ceremony a prankster listed it on eBay under “Noel Gallagher’s Brit award”. Within hours a flood of bids from excited fans had surged past the £50,000 mark.
However, the joke seller was forced to admit it was a spoof and not the real McCoy.
Later, the real gold figurine which Liam tossed into the crowd was put on eBay by a genuine seller listed as “Liam’s Brit award”.
It received only 13 bids in a whole week with the top offer scraping just £7,800.

Mr Gallagher, who was a songwriter, guitarist and singer in the popular Britpop group, has applied for planning permission to build a summer house in his ten-acre gardens at his home in Nightingales Lane.
He plans to swap the rock'n'roll lifestyle for relaxing amongst wild flowers in the Buckinghamshire countryside. He has proposed a single storey octagonally-shaped structure where he can enjoy 'champagne supernova' and will be used by his family.
The timber building is to have a thatched roof - a world away from the Manchester streets where he grew up.
A council report states the summer house will not overlook his neighbours and will be screened by existing shrubbery - being more than 100 metres away from the wonderwalls of his house.
It states: "The family intend to enhance the existing shrubs and trees with more planting and native meadow flowers. The overall appearance of the summer house is designed to blend in with the surrounding trees and shrubs and create a refuge in the garden."
Last August Mr Gallagher quit the group after 18 years following a disagreement with fellow band mate and brother Liam. The band recently won a Brit award for best album of the past 30 years for their release '(What's the Story) Morning Glory?'

Weller closes ceremony with a career-spanning set
Paul Weller has collected the final award of the night at the Shockwaves NME Awards tonight (February 24), picking up the Godlike Genius gong at the at the O2 Academy Brixton in London.
Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie and former Clash guitarist Mick Jones, whose bands have both claimed the prize, presented Weller with the honour, with the Modfather then giving a short speech to the crowd.
Weller then performed a six-song set with his solo band that spanned his career and brought the Shockwaves NME Awards to a close.
The star was joined by ex-Oasis guitarist Gem Archer and My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields for his closing set, which saw him play songs from across his career, including recent single '7+3 Is The Striker's Name'. The supergroup also ran through tracks including The Jam's 'Eton Rifles' and UK chart-toppers 'Start!' and 'Town Called Malice'.
NME editor Krissi Murison introduced Weller onstage first, alongside The Clash's Mick Jones and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie.
"We could quite believe he hadn't been given it before," Murison said, before Jones and Gillespie took to the mic.
"He wrote some of the most beautiful, poetic songs," Gillespie said, before listing a number of Weller's most-revered tracks.
He added: "I could go on all all night cos he's written so many classics."
Gillespie then called Weller "the real deal", before letting Jones speak.
"It's our great pleasure to present this award to this incredible man, and to this man who we love," Jones exclaimed, after which a video montage of stars including Noel Gallagher, Carl Barat and Peter Blake praising Weller played on the big screens.
Weller then took to the stage himself.
"What could I say, it's taken them 30 years," he said first.
He then added: "I'm embarrassed because people said so many nice things about me...but they're all true! God bless you, have a good night!"

Paul Weller has collected the final award of the night at the Shockwaves NME Awards tonight (February 24), picking up the Godlike Genius gong at the at the O2 Academy Brixton in London.
Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie and former Clash guitarist Mick Jones, whose bands have both claimed the prize, presented Weller with the honour, with the Modfather then giving a short speech to the crowd.
Weller then performed a six-song set with his solo band that spanned his career and brought the Shockwaves NME Awards to a close.
The star was joined by ex-Oasis guitarist Gem Archer and My Bloody Valentine's Kevin Shields for his closing set, which saw him play songs from across his career, including recent single '7+3 Is The Striker's Name'. The supergroup also ran through tracks including The Jam's 'Eton Rifles' and UK chart-toppers 'Start!' and 'Town Called Malice'.
NME editor Krissi Murison introduced Weller onstage first, alongside The Clash's Mick Jones and Primal Scream's Bobby Gillespie.
"We could quite believe he hadn't been given it before," Murison said, before Jones and Gillespie took to the mic.
"He wrote some of the most beautiful, poetic songs," Gillespie said, before listing a number of Weller's most-revered tracks.
He added: "I could go on all all night cos he's written so many classics."
Gillespie then called Weller "the real deal", before letting Jones speak.
"It's our great pleasure to present this award to this incredible man, and to this man who we love," Jones exclaimed, after which a video montage of stars including Noel Gallagher, Carl Barat and Peter Blake praising Weller played on the big screens.
Weller then took to the stage himself.
"What could I say, it's taken them 30 years," he said first.
He then added: "I'm embarrassed because people said so many nice things about me...but they're all true! God bless you, have a good night!"

Officials in Canada have turned down Noel Gallagher's request to appear at his attacker's sentencing hearing amid fears it will become a media circus.
The former Oasis rocker was left with three broken ribs after Danny Pickering lunged at him during one of the band's shows in Toronto, Canada in September 2008.
The 48 year old pleaded guilty to assault and Gallagher formally requested he be present at the sentencing hearing in Toronto to read the victim impact statement in person.
A judge previously ruled that Gallagher was entitled to be present and postponed the hearing date to accommodate the musician's schedule.
But now prosecutor Ruth Kleinhenz-Nelson has revealed officials have decided Gallagher should not attend because of the publicity surrounding the case, according to the Toronto Star.

Music giant EMI has responded to the recent rumors that it may sell off Abbey Road, the legendary Beatles recording studio in London.
In an official statement released over the weekend, EMI's parent company, Terra Firma, announced that it will not, in fact, sell the aging space, but revitalize it instead.
The statement comes after last week's public outcries from former Beatle Paul McCartney and swirling rumors that composer Andrew Lloyd Webber may swoop in to save the studio.
"In response to recent press speculation, EMI confirms that it is holding preliminary discussions for the revitalization of Abbey Road with interested and appropriate third parties," the company said in the statement.
"Abbey Road studios had, for a number of years, been losing money and we have developed plans to revitalize the studios," EMI added. "These plans would involve a substantial injection of new capital."
Abbey Road has not only hosted recording sessions by such classic rock legends as the Beatles and Pink Floyd; it was also the studio used to record Radiohead's Kid A, as well as albums from Oasis and Snow Patrol.

The venue with a capacity of 10,000 was built in 1997 for the hand over to Chinese rule, Oasis were the first band to play there since the ceremony.

Coronation Street is sensationally plotting to bring back its most famous character Hilda Ogden for blockbuster 50th anniversary live episodes.
In a move that could blow EastEnders' huge 25th birthday show last Friday out of the water, a galaxy of Street legends is set to return.
They could also include Mavis Wilton, Curly Watts and Tracy Barlow, as well as a guest appearance by Oasis star Noel Gallagher.
Show chiefs have been hatching plans for dramatic shows featuring movie-style stunts for Corrie's birthday in December.
Our mole added: "This year is the ultimate war of the soaps. EastEnders set the bar high on Friday but Corrie will want to smash it. Whatever happens, they will make it go with a bang."

The die-hard Manchester City fan has never hidden his dislike for the Chelsea skipper and now admits he has joined the ever-growing Team Bridge.
I bumped into the mouthy Manc this week and he couldn't wait to fry JT - allegedly caught playing away with Wayne Bridge's ex-girlfriend Vanessa Perroncel.
The ex-Oasis star, 42, told me: "John Terry is a c***." (I'll let you work out the asterisks.)
"I've never liked the bloke but doing that to Bridgey shows what he's like. What an a***hole. If I ever see him I'm not sure what would happen.
"Everyone has got behind Wayne, which is great to see. When Chelsea come to play us Terry is going to get so much s*** and he'll deserve all of it. I hope our boys give him as much abuse as they can and here's a message to the fans - "Give it all you've got".
Noel was enjoying a night out at the War Child concert in London following the Brit Awards on Tuesday when he entertained me with his rant about Terry, 29, who was last month exposed for supposedly scoring with Vanessa, 34.
In July, at the time of speculation that Terry could be joining 29-year-old Bridge at Man City, Noel told of his utter disgust at the planned move. He said: "I don't like John Terry and I never have.
"He's got funny eyes and he's a cry-baby. He's also a Cockney."
His outburst was certainly well timed, as Manchester City visit Chelsea this Saturday.

Brothers Liam and Noel Gallagher turned up uninvited with their band and managed to secure a last-minute spot on the bill.

As American Idol judge Simon Cowell prepares to leave the program to focus on bringing his X Factor show to the United States, rumours (trial ballons?) about who will replace him have been continually appearing in the media.
Surprisingly, former Oasis singer/guitarist is Noel Gallagher is the latest person to be suggested as the next American Idol judge. Even more surprising is that Cowell himself has said he thinks Gallagher would make a good replacement.
"I know Noel quite well. I like him," Cowell told the Press Association. "He is very funny and a brilliant songwriter — it's a possibility."
Cowell also said Perez Hilton would be a good choice as his replacement. Radio shock jock Howard Stern and Britain's Got Talent's Piers Morgan have also been suggested as new judges in place of Cowell, but nothing's been decided yet.
We think Gallagher's the best choice for the job, and here's why:
1. He will be merciless about pointing out when someone can't sing or when there's music he thinks is rubbish, which will be about 90-something per cent of the time. If you thought Cowell could be mean, just imagine the type of things Gallagher would say. ("Yer fookin' rubbish, get out o' me sight!")
2. Most contestants are going to look at him like scared deers in headlights. They'll also have no what he's saying, since he's got one hell of a thick Mancunian accent.
3. If American Idol's producers want to counter The X Factor, which originated in Britain and will feature Britons like Cowell, I think the best course of action would be to pick a really, really prominent British celebrity, and Gallagher is that. He's also got the necessary acerbic personality and wit.
4. Yeah, we know Gallagher's working on that solo album, but fact is he's got a lot of time on his hands since smashing his guitar and walking out on his brother in Paris last year. If he's continually surrounded by people who are shitty musicians and singers, perhaps it will push him to make a really great solo record and prove to Liam Gallagher that everything Oasis did post (What's The Story) Morning Glory? really was shite.
5. If Noel takes this on, it will be like spitting in Liam's face, and you can be Liam is going to have a field day with it and chew Noel up in the press. Can you imagine the hilariously entertaining bitchfest that will undoubtedly ensue?
6. Every second word will have to be bleeped out. Idol would then be 100 per cent funnier.

He said to Absolute Radio host Geoff Lloyd: "I actually rung Liam to be part of The Who night, but he's otherwise engaged.
"We've actually got room for two guests, and anyone who wants to turn up and do something after we do 'Quadrophenia', just to round off the night, you know - let's see what happens."
Although he's not secured Liam's services to perform at the series of concerts, two of the other nights will see the first live performances by his brother Noel Gallagher since Oasis split last August

The song became the band's second single to reach #1 in the United Kingdom charts, where it also went platinum. "Don't Look Back in Anger" was also the first Oasis single to feature Noel on lead vocals instead of his brother, Liam Gallagher. The title is perhaps a play on the song "Look Back in Anger", from David Bowie's Lodger album or on the play, Look Back in Anger by John Osborne, from which Bowie's song took inspiration.

The video for the song, directed by Nigel Dick, features Patrick Macnee, the actor who played John Steed in the 1960s television series The Avengers, apparently a favourite of the band. While filming the video, drummer Alan White met future wife Liz Atkins. They were married 13 August 1997 at Studley Priory Hotel, Oxfordshire but later divorced. Macnee has no recollection of the filming of the video.

Of the character "Sally" referred to in the song he commented, "I don't actually know anybody called Sally. It's just a word that fitted, y'know, might as well throw a girl's name in there. It's gotta guarantee somebody a shag off a bird called Sally, hasn't it?". Noel claims that the character "Lyla", from Oasis' 2005 single is the sister of Sally. In the interview on the DVD released with the special edition of Stop the Clocks, Noel also revealed that a girl approached him and asked him if Sally was the same girl as in The Stone Roses' track "Sally Cinnamon". Noel replied that he'd never thought of that, but thought it was good anyway.
Noel admits that certain lines from the song are lifted from John Lennon: "I got this tape in the United States that had apparently been burgled from the Dakota Hotel and someone had found these cassettes. Lennon was starting to record his memoirs on tape. He's going on about 'trying to start a revolution from me bed, because they said the brains I had went to my head.' I thought 'Thank you, I'll take that'!" "Revolution from me bed" most likely refers to Lennon's infamous bed-ins in 1969, both in the quote and in the song. The piano during the intro of the song highly resembles Lennon's "Imagine". Like many other popular songs,the chord progression for both the verse and the chorus are based on the classical piece Canon in D by Johann Pachelbel. The songs only differ slightly at the end of each phrase. Gallagher also admits that he was under the influence of substances when he wrote the song, and to this day he claims he does not know what it means.
The song has become a favourite at Oasis' live performances. Noel encourages the crowd to sing along and often keeps quiet during the chorus, allowing the fans instead to sing along while he focuses on his guitar playing. The volume of crowd noise that usually descends on the chorus at concerts is easily audible on the rendition of "Don't Look Back in Anger" on Familiar to Millions. During the Dig Out Your Soul Tour the song has been played acoustically at a slower rate by Noel. Which surprised some fans, but it is still sung by all the fans.
In a 2006 radio interview, Liam Gallagher said that it was he who came up with the line "so Sally can wait" as Noel was struggling with that particular line at the time. In the interview with Colin Murray, Noel admits, "I was doing it in the sound check and the so Sally bit, I wasn't singing that...and he [Liam] says, 'Are you singing so Sally can wait?' and I said, 'No.' and he said, 'Well you should do.'"

Big Brother Recordings Limited celebrated their 10th anniversary on 7th February having sold over 6 million albums by Oasis in the UK alone in the last decade. The label was formed after the demise of Creation Records and has released every Oasis record since then.

Ex-Oasis guitarist Bonehead was, unsurprisingly, besieged by calls this week after frontman Liam Gallagher namechecked him in his controversial acceptance speech at the Brit Awards on Tuesday night.
Liam paid tribute to all former Oasis members – except brother Noel, of course – in his expletive-laden speech for winning the Best Album of the past 30 years for What's The Story Morning Glory, before throwing the gong into the audience.
Founder member Bonehead, who quit the band in 1999, backs Liam's actions all the way.

The Oasis star pushed over a girl model who was painted silver to look like a Brit Award.
Fair play to her fella, who was stood nearby and painted gold.
He leapt off his podium and confronted Liam, telling him how out of order he was.
Security jumped in and ordered Liam out. A source said: "It was outrageous what Liam did. It upset a lot of people."
Liam was later "interviewed" by wife Nicole Appleton for ITV2.
Asked about Oasis's award for Best Album Of The Past 30 Years, he said: "I don't think we deserved it, there have been some great albums.
"But if we are f****** going to get invited then I will turn up and have it. I am going to f****** play the game."
Talking about the bust-up with the models, he snarled: "I have been silvered before. I have been pushed over. But I got up and f****** carried on. He is sitting there going, 'Hey, you pushed my bird over!'

One complaint objected Peter Kay’s use of the word “knobhead” while the comic hosted ITV1’s live coverage. The remark was directed at Liam Gallagher after a predictably rebellious acceptance speech.
Gallagher swore and hurled a microphone as he accepted Oasis's award for the Best Brits album of the past 30 years for their second album, (What's the Story?) Morning Glory. As he left the stage, Kay remarked: "What a knobhead".

Former Oasis star Noel Gallagher has mocked his younger brother Liam's antics at The Brit Awards last night.
Acting typically cocksure, Liam threw Oasis' 'Brit Awards album of 30 years' gong into the crowd after picking it up at the Earls Court ceremony.

Liam Gallagher sensationally announced he was going to take Class A drugs straight after an interview he had on ITV2 – unbeknown to him he was still live on air.
The bad boy of Oasis was still in a temper after being called a ‘knobhead’ on ITV’s Brits Awards 2010 by host Peter Kay, just after he collected the award for Brits Album of 30 Years.
Liam, 37, made a spectacle of himself when he accepted the award – thanking everyone but snubbing his own brother Noel – and then preceding to throw not only the microphone into the screaming crowd but his Brit award too.
ITV were forced to make a broadcasting break as the fowl-mouthed singer couldn’t resist adding some ‘f*****g’ words into his speech.
Backstage when the hot-headed singer was being interviewed, he said: ‘I don’t know if we deserved it because there has been loads of great albums over the last 30 years.’
But the real shock came when he openly declared: ‘Now can we go and take loads of Class A drugs?’
The interview swiftly ended but it was too late as audiences had already heard the shock statement.
