Noel Gallagher On David Bowie

Please note that this interview was conducted in English first, then translated into Japanese for the December issue of 'Rockin' On' and has been translated back into English by mimmihopps.

The interview took place before Noel went on tour with U2 earlier this year.

From all the songs in the new album, 'It’s A Beautiful World' is the song with the most David Bowie influence.

Holy Mountain is also influenced by 'Aladdin Sane' era’s Bowie.

Top secret! 'I still don’t know what I was waiting for' from 'Waiting For The Rapture' was 'borrowed' from 'Changes'.

He’s always been listening to David  Bowie since his childhood. His cassette tape he always took with him on the road (his roadie years and Oasis years), was filled with Led Zeppelin, Bowie and Slade.

The reason why Noel got into Bowie's music was Mick Ronson. Mick is his guitar hero next to Johnny Marr

Noel’s favourite Bowie album is Hunky Dory. His favourite Bowie era is Space Oditty to Ashes to Ashes. He doesn’t like Bowie’s Berlin era.

Heathen and Next Day are great albums. To Noel, Let’s Dance is the best album of Bowie’s entire career

Noel met Bowie a couple of times (at Brit Awards etc) and exchanged emails with him 4 or 5 times.

The first email he received from Bowie was something like “Thank you for your kind words about me. Keep making great music. I’ll always support you”. Then a couple of months later he passed away.

Thanks to Mimmihopps

Liam Gallagher On Tracks From His Debut Album 'As You Were'

Liam Gallagher spoke to Chris Moyles earlier today, this is what he had to say about tracks from his debut album 'As You Were'.

Wall of Glass

“Absolute stomper. Love singing it. No nonsense rock and roll guitar music.”

Bold

“I love that tune as well, very Lennon-y, very me. Good tune.”

Greedy Soul

“Filth. Utter filth. It’s like I said the other day – you know when you have vindaloo and you start sweating, and you’re thinking should I put this down – but you start carrying on because you’re just into it – and you’re struggling with it. That’s what ‘Greedy Soul’ is, when you start singing it you think ‘I’m gunna have a heart attack here’, but, cmon!”

Paper Crown

“Paper Crown is classic. It’s a bit Bowie I think. Good tune. I love it. I’ve left that back – we played it a bit at the first few gigs, but have held it back a bit, but we’re going to start playing it again.”

For What It’s Worth

“Classic, beautiful song…There’s a lot of emotion in it man, I reckon that’s the most Oasis-y kinda song on the album. You know, I’m proud to be in Oasis, I love Oasis, still do – not a day that goes by without thinking of it, you know what I mean? So it’s good to be making music of that calibre.”

When I’m in Need

“Beautiful song. That’s me playing acoustic guitar at the beginning…so that’s good. I like it man, it’s a beautiful song.”

You Better Run

“That’s a cocky little thing, full of aggro. Bit of an aggro tune.”

I Get By

“Another good tune, it’s hard to explain what they’re really about – as I really don’t know. But it’s a good tune!”

Chinatown

“Great tune!”

Come Back to Me

“It’s another Oasis-y kinda sounding one. It started off sounding a bit ‘I am the Walrus’ it had a big mellotron on it, so we took that off as it was really Beatles-y – so we just played it with the guitars, and that’s a monster man.”

Universal Gleam

“Beautiful tune. Love that song. I wanted to call Beady Eye’s last album ‘Universal Gleam’ but everyone was humming and haw about it – but I think it’s a good title.”

I’ve All I Need

“Beautiful song – very La’s-y…I think so anyway…there’s a lot of heartfelt stuff in there man…I can tell you an interesting fact. There’s a line in there that says ‘I hibernate and sing/While gathering my wings’. I was over in New York once and I got a call saying ‘Yoko wants to meet you’, and I just called me kid Lennon. So anyway we go to Yoko’s house in Dakota building. Cut a long story short, we go in there and in the kitchen – she invites us in and makes us a cup of tea – and she’s got this banner, massive banner round the kitchen, and I said ‘oh what does that mean?’ and she goes ‘Oh John asked the same question when we went to Japan to meet my parents.’ Anyway it says ‘while I’ve been hibernating, I’ve been gathering my wings’, and it was when he stopped making music. So I thought, write that down. So anyway, years go by, I’ve been trying to get it in to a song, could never get it in, and then it happened on that.”

Greg Kurstin On Working With Liam Gallagher

Taken from a interview with Greg Kurstin who talks about working with Liam Gallagher, read the full article here.

For the Oasis singer’s solo debut, Kurstin worked on four songs — “Wall of Glass,” “Bold,” “Paper Crown,” and “Come Back to Me” — and flexed some new production muscles in the process. “[Liam] was referencing things that I love but haven’t gotten a chance to do before on a recording — earlier Stones and Bowie and stuff like that,” Kurstin says. “It was really fun for me to break out that gear in my studio and just try to get the raunchiest sounds I possibly could. I would pound on the drums and he would cheer me on. That fired me up to make the tracks aggressive and loud and to get the dirtiest, loudest sounds I could.”

And Kurstin says he and his fellow collaborator, Miike Snow’s Andrew Wyatt, had a breeze working with the notoriously cantankerous Gallagher. “He seemed into the sounds I was adding, so that got me really comfortable,” Kurstin explains. “He can be really funny, just telling stories, and then he gets on the microphone and he sings and he’s got that amazing voice. I had such a great experience with him.”

Skepta Responds To Praise From Liam Gallagher

Skepta has responded to praise to Liam Gallagher, after the former Oasis frontman spoke out for the grime star. Watch our video interview with Skepta above.

NME spoke to the grime hero at the Ivor Novello Awards in London, where he won ‘Songwriter Of The Year’. It has emerged that Gallagher is also a fan, after he tweeted: “Man like Skepta keeping it real. Got to stand for something.”

Responding to the praise, Skepta said: “I feel like the Earth is a re-print of a re-print of a print of a re-print. There are people who take on different objectives and missions in life. When you grow older, there’s a a void – and right now I’m filling a space where a lot of old rock, grime, hip-hop, punk artists left a vacant space. Everything has gone about the internet, everything has gone about the likes, everything has gone about social networking. I still have that…I can’t even put my finger on it, but I still have it.

“I like that these places I’m taking of the people that I respect and these people before me…Of course they’re respecting – they’re in touch. Liam’s in touch, bro. You can see. Not everybody really knows what’s happening. It’s a presence, it’s apparent, I’m here. You can see it in there eyes, you can see it in Bowie’s eyes when he takes a photo, rest in peace. There are so many of them.”

He added: “We get it, and when we see people who get it, we know that they get it as well. I’m happy that I represent that. Thanks to my mum and dad for giving me the right tools of life to get to this point.”

Anais Gallagher Talks About What It's Like To Have Noel As Her Dad

Anaïs Gallagher, daughter of Noel Gallagher, has said that she almost cries when she watches him perform live.

Model Anaïs, 17, recently spoke to the Evening Standard, describing what it’s like having the former Oasis guitarist as a father, saying: “He doesn’t give a fuck about what anybody thinks of him or says of him, and will always say what’s on his mind and I admire him so much for that.”

“People are like: ‘What’s it like having a famous dad and being in the spotlight?’ It’s all I’ve known. Do I remember when [Oasis] played Wembley Stadium? My only memory was getting really upset that they didn’t put any Cadbury Chocolate Buttons in the dressing room.”

She added: “It’s only now, as I’ve got older and understand the scale of things, that I almost tear up seeing my dad play on stage. Now, I go and see my dad and pop over to his studio and say, ‘I’m so proud of you’. But when I was younger I was literally like: ‘It’s so embarrassing, dad. Stop singing.'”

Anaïs went on to credit her music taste to her father: “My taste is identical to my dad’s. I’m a diehard David Bowie fan. I love The Beatles, I love The Smiths, my dad’s music… anything that’s made with real instruments. I don’t listen to anything that’s on the radio and I doubt that anything on a playlist of mine is from the last 20 years. My knowledge of music has always been good because I think my dad would disown me if it wasn’t. What I take from my dad is my taste in music, his sense of humour, his no-bullshit kind of attitude, and then from my mum I take her energy and positive outlook on life. She’s high as a kite all the time — not in that way, obviously”.

She also explains the troubles of having famous parents: “It’s very hard trying to find your own way, dealing with people saying you’re only doing it because of your parents. I’ve had stuff written about me since the moment I was born. When I was younger, I’d never done anything to deserve the amount of attention that I got. It’s not like I was a singer or had any significant talent. It was just because I was the child of my dad. So I have to respect that, in a way. I can’t do anything too crazy or say anything too crazy because it’s going to reflect back onto my dad. I don’t want to speak my mind too much.”

“I wouldn’t want people thinking he’s a really bad parent, because he’s not — he’s a really good parent. But that’s [not] how the media would portray it. So you have to be careful. People think there’s this huge team around me telling me what to say. Trust me, there’s not. I get told off quite a lot for speaking my mind too much on social media.”

Liam Gallagher Reviews Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds

The former Oasis singer reckons he could have made one of his brother's songs a "100 times better".

Liam Gallagher has given his appraisal on his brother Noel Gallagher's solo career, and despite saying some of it is "good," he hasn't held back about what he doesn't like.

In an interview with Q Magazine, the former Oasis singer shared his thoughts on Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, admitting he's "heard some songs on the radio or TV".

The outspoken rocker started out with the positive, conceeding: "It's good. Typical Noel songs." However, when it came to AKA... What A Life! he said: "If I'd have sung it I would have changed the whole dynamic. I'd have made it 100 times better."

The 43-year-old added: "I like that Everybody's On The Run one. But that new one with the na-na-na-na bit? [In The Heat Of The Moment] No, not having that at all. It sounds like Blur."

If that wasn't honest enough, it turns out Liam isn't too keen on his brother using the saxophone, either, concluding: "Our kid's not weird enough to go Bowie. Putting a sax on it doesn't make you Starman."

Talking about the upcoming Oasis documentary, Supersonic, and if it made him miss his brother, Liam revealed: "I miss the Noel in the film, that's the Noel I know.

"And I do love him. I don't sit at home crying into a picture of him, though and I'm sure he doesn't of me either. But I'm an energy and I bet he misses that energy".

Noel Gallagher Becomes Newest Recruit Into Barrowlands Hall Of Fame

Noel Gallagher has been inducted into the hall of fame at a famous Glasgow concert venue.

The Oasis singer was added to the list of celebrities in the Barrowlands Hall of Fame on Thursday night after performing at the Hydro.

Noel was given a glass trophy, and his name will be carved on a plaque and hung on the stairs of the famous music venue.

He is one of a number of celebrities who have successfully been inducted so far, including David Bowie and Scots rockers Big Country.

Stagehand and Clutha Trust founder Billy Coyle, who presented Noel with his award, said: "We were sitting talking about why we had picked Noel to go into the hall of fame and we explained that there were qualifications you had to have to be inducted.

"Noel's qualifications are that he had been to the Barras three or four times previously, working for Inspiral Carpets, and he had performed a solo gig when Liam walked off stage [in 1994].

"He carried on playing so the fans wouldn't be disappointed, and the rest of the band joined him later, after about seven or eight songs.

"He said to all the fans at the Barras that there would be an Oasis concert or free for everyone who kept their stubs from the gig, and he came good - he had another concert within four weeks.

"Noel also did a TV interview about up and coming bands, and was asked what the best thing they could do to improve at playing live.

"He told them any band who wants to play live has to play the Barrowlands."

Billy said all the bands and artists who have been entered into the Hall of Fame have all made a positive contribution to the venue and to concert goers.

He also added that if it hadn't been for Noel's generosity in signing a guitar after his Hydro show in 2015, they may not have got the Clutha Trust project off the ground.

The project was set up following the helicopter tragedy, and aims to teach children across the city how to play musical instruments and give them opportunities to perform.

Billy said: "The funds we raised from the guitar meant we could organise events and teach people to play.

"That developed into the Clutha Next Generation.

"The initial push from Noel with his high profile meant we could stage an event for under 18s in the Barras as well, where 39 acts got to play.

"He was really impressed and has asked us to keep him informed."

Noel Gallagher Reveals Who's Producing His Next Album And More

Below are a number of videos of Noel gallagher during a recent interview in Belguim. During the interview he talked about who's producing his new album and more.

On his new album he said "David Holmes is producing it, and I’m singing one song in the highest register I’ve ever got to in my entire life. It’s almost unenjoyable singing it.”

As some of you may remember David Holmes did the remix of 'The Girl With The X Ray Eyes' for the 'Where The City Meets The Sky: Chasing Yesterday The Remixes' EP.

He said at the time "When I first heard 'The Girl With The X Ray Eyes' I immediately heard the influence of David Bowie's 'Space Oddity' which made me think of another great version by the Langley Schools Project... after listening to the lyrics on repeat for a few hours I thought they had a real picture book sensibility so I called my daughter's primary school teacher John Hunter who is a massive Noel fan. I told him my idea and he spoke to the head master who give us permission . So John rehearsed the kids for 5 days during breaks with Claire Dean (music teacher ) and I stopped by and recorded it in their assembly hall."

 Listen to the remix here.

Noel Gallagher On Mr. Blobby, Threesomes, Oasis' 'Be Here Now' And More

Quotes from Noel Gallagher and Matt Morgan from last nights show on Absolute radio.

On Mr. Blobby

Noel: “When he was on in the ‘90s – was it the ‘80s or the ‘90s? – I was obsessed with him ‘cause he’d just turn up and trash everything like a drunk, pink marshmallow. I thought it was anarchy, I thought it was the future."

Morgan: “I thought he was rubbish… I thought it was tongue-in-check meant to be rubbish, wasn’t it? It wasn’t meant to be – here’s the future.”

Noel: “I’m gonna get a load of DVDs and play ‘em to my children. I think they’d love it.”

Morgan: “Yeah, but what happened to him? It’s like he was disgraced or something. He disappeared.”

On threesomes

Noel: “I’ve never had a threesome.”

Morgan: “Really? You could have done. Why didn’t you?”

Noel: “I don’t know, I don’t like crowds.”

On fearing his knee had had a stroke

Morgan: “You once told me you went to the doctor because you had one sweaty leg.”

Noel: “I had one sweaty knee… It was in the ‘90s. Clearly, it was all connected to raging drug abuse. I used to wake up and one leg – it was around the knee area – was always sweaty. And because you’re paranoid, I used to think: ‘I wonder what it is? Maybe my knee’s having a stroke.’”

On Be Here Now

Morgan: “Did you ever scream on a track?”

Noel: “I’ve screamed on one track. On a track called ‘Fading Out’, me and Liam did a scream. We had to take a week off afterwards. It was awful. If you hear it on the record, it’s put through a harmonizer and it sounds… it wasn’t very good. I’m closing my eyes now and thinking of it and I’m thinking it’s not very good.”

Morgan: “Was it used?”

Noel: “It’s on the album! Be Here Now. Still available. A nine-million-selling flop.”

On David Bowie's death

Morgan: “It was a shock.”

Noel: “He did a photoshoot a few days before and he looked great… The insinuation is that he recorded [Blackstar] as a dying man.

Morgan: “If you found out you were dying, would you bother to go, ‘Oh, I’ve gotta do some music?’”

Noel: “It depends how I felt, really. I’m not that driven at the best of times. I wouldn’t have thought if I was on the way out… What I’d probably do is try to spend as much money as possible and settle a few scores. I don’t know if I’d be that bothered about going in the studio, you know what I mean? But I’m glad he did.”

Noel Gallagher Regrets Forgetting His Time With David Bowie

The 48-year-old former Oasis star was introduced to the music legend - who passed away in January from cancer at the age of 69 - backstage at his concert at Wembley Stadium in London in 1995.

Noel wishes he hadn't been so intoxicated at the time and admits if there wasn't a photo of the two pop icons together he'd have no memory of their encounter.

Speaking as he hosted a special show for Absolute Radio - which can be listened to at Absoluteradio.co.uk - he recalled: ''I went to see Bowie at Wembley Arena and he was being supported by Morrissey. ''Somebody came up to me and said would you like to come and meet David. And I was like, 'Yeah of course.' There's a picture of it, of me and him and I've obviously said something funny to him, because he's in hysterics and I've no idea what I've said to him. Had that picture not existed I don't think I'd have any recollection of ever meeting him. Apart from where I remember being taken into his dressing room and it was like I was too young and too wasted for it to dawn on me that I was meeting one of the greats.''

Noel is a massive fan of the 'Space Oddity' hitmaker and is expected to take to the stage at the BRIT Awards as part of a super-group that will pay tribute to Bowie.

The 'Lock All the Doors' singer can remember listening to his music all the time when he was younger and cites him as a major influence on his own career.

Noel - who covered Bowie's hit 'Heroes' as a B-side to the 1997 Oasis single 'D'You Know What I Mean?' - recalled: ''I was into him like right early on. I used to have this cassette that when we were driving round Manchester on the dole and it was two songs of David Bowie followed by two songs of T Rex followed by two songs of Slade on a C90 cassette.''

Noel Gallagher Gives Updates On His New Album And Hairline

Noel Gallagher is hard at work on a follow-up to last year's Chasing Yesterday with his solo project Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds. "I'm in the studio at the minute," the singer and guitarist tells Rolling Stone. "I'm in the middle of fucking about."

Gallagher has a clear goal in mind for his third High Flying Birds LP. "I'm doing some stuff that, this time in particular, will get really, properly ignored in America," he says. "I don't just mean ignored like the rest of 'em. I mean properly ignored. That's what I'm aiming for: total, total anonymity. I'm sick and tired of being in New York and being pestered by one person a month. That's gotta fucking stop."

One influence to look out for: David Bowie. Gallagher recently spoke to Rolling Stone to discuss his lifelong love of the Starman's music, which he suggests has carried over to his most recent work. "There's a line in 'In the Heat of the Morning,'" he says, referencing a Sixties-pop rarity from early in Bowie's career. "I listened to it the other day, thinking, 'Oh, I've subconsciously used that in some of my new stuff.' Amazing!" Gallagher also cites an echo of 1973's "The Jean Genie" in a track he's cooking up. "I've nicked a little bit of that," he admits. "The 'woo-hoo!' You'll hear that sooner or later in one of my tracks."

The guitarist laughs before offering a final word of wisdom. "I remain fucking totally awesome," Gallagher declares. "In 2016, I'm as awesome as I was in the back end of 2015. My hair is impeccable; it's not showing any signs of thinning, at all. I'm fuckin' thriving. Thriving!"

Noel Gallagher Picks His Top 5 David Bowie Songs

Noel Gallagher awoke to bad news on January 10th. "My wife burst into the bedroom crying, and I thought one of the children had died," he says. "She said, 'David Bowie's dead.' I was like, 'Fuckin' hell.'" The former Oasis songwriter-guitarist (and Bowie mega-fan), whose latest U.S. tour begins in July, called a few days after Bowie's death to tell us about his five favorite songs by the Starman. "Let's celebrate his life more than mourn his passing," Gallagher says. "All things must pass, and all that."

Noel Gallagher, Bono, Coldplay, Damon Albarn And More To Form A Supergroup At The Brits

Paying a fitting homage to David Bowie is no easy task, but the Brit Awards are trying their hardest.

I can reveal bosses are putting together an A-list supergroup in a bid to lay on the ultimate tribute at next month’s bash.

The band, which will hopefully include former Britpop foes Noel Gallagher and Damon Albarn, plus Bono, will perform alongside iconic British acts Coldplay and Adele.

Organisers are even considering asking ITV to extend the show by 30 minutes to give the spectacular the time it deserves.

Yesterday a music insider revealed: “A few artists approached the Brits to ask if they could be involved in the David Bowie tribute as they want to make sure it is done properly.

“He was a British icon and they want to provide a credible farewell which can honour that.

“The band will be full of musicians who grew up with Bowie and were inspired by him, meaning artists like Noel, Damon and Bono.

“It is unlikely to involve young acts such as Sam Smith or Ed Sheeran, but there will be a few artists who are already singing on the night who will be asked if they want to take part too.

“The organisers are putting everything into it. If they get it right, it will be epic.”

Noel Gallagher Dominates Vinyl Sales In The UK

Gallagher’s High Flying Birds top sales of both albums and singles on vinyl during the first half of the year.

Let no one say the vinyl market is dominated by the dinosaurs of rock or their fans. Actually, scratch that – because it is. The Official Charts Company has released its lists of the best selling vinyl albums and singles this year, and both are dominated by Men of Rock of a certain age.

Chasing Yesterday by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds is the best selling vinyl album of the year, with Nos 2 and 3 being Led Zeppelin’s Physical Graffiti and the Stone Roses’ debut album. The highest placed album by a woman, or an act including women, is Amy Winehouse’s Back to Black, at No 18. The only other women or acts featuring women to feature in the top 40 are Courtney Barnett (Sometimes I Sit and Think and Sometimes I Just Sit, No 23), Florence + the Machine (How Big How Blue How Beautiful, No 27), Fleetwood Mac (Rumours, No 29), Belle & Sebastian (Girls in Peacetime Want To Dance, No 36), Björk (Vulnicura, No 37) and Wolf Alice (My Love Is Cool, No 40).

The singles chart is even more skewed, with Gallagher and his Birds occupying the top three places, as well as No 7. David Bowie, meanwhile is at No 5 and No 6 , as well as No 10 (for a split single with Television’s Tom Verlaine released for Record Store Day). Florence + the Machine (What Kind of Man, No 14) and Courtney Barnett (Kim’s Caravan, No 17) are the only women in the top 20.

The top 10 vinyl albums of 2015 so far

1 Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – Chasing Yesterday
2 Led Zeppelin – Physical Graffiti
3 The Stone Roses – The Stone Roses
4 Blur – The Magic Whip
5 Royal Blood – Royal Blood
6 Arctic Monkeys – AM
7 Pink Floyd – The Dark Side of the Moon
8 Led Zeppelin – IV
9 Sufjan Stevens – Carrie and Lowell
