Folks On Supporting Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds And More

Michael from Folks took the time to answer some questions ahead of the bands support date for Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds at The Roundhouse in London on October 31st.

Were are you guys from?
Mostly from Manchester (Scott, Michael, Elliot, Thom) - we did rehearse there but decided to rent a rehearsal room out of the way in the countryside, 15 miles out of the city. Thom is originally from Sheffield but moved to Manchester last year. I think Noel and I were born in the same hospital, St. Marys, on Oxford Road. Mine and Scotts families are originally from Miles Platting, Elliot is from sunny Burnage.

Who's in the band and how did you meet up?

Scott Anderson (vocals), Michael Beasley (songwriter/guitar), Thomas Fripp (Lead Guitar), Elliot Barlow (Drums), Harry Gumery (Bass), Wil Akroyd (Keys). Scott and I had been working on songs and after a while, asked a few friends if they knew any spectacular musicians who might want to join the band. It took a while to find the right people but once we were assembled, it came together really quickly.

What style of music best describes what you do?

It's a little psychedelic but the emphasis is on the songs, each of which is a pocket symphony. We spent a lot of time deciding on what kind of instrumentation to use on each track for the record, flutes, mellotrons, strange strings. We were invited to use Toerag Studios in Hackney, London, which is where it first really started for us. We loved using the old EMI REDD desk, Automatic double tracking and recording on analogue tape, it was preferable to what we had used before. We found that because we’re using a four track tape machine, we didn't have lots of time to think about things like you might have in a digital studio. We usually cut one track per day. Verve Records in New York heard the recordings from Toerag and gave us a little money to make some more demos, which was inspiring since Verve is the home of the greats such as Duke Ellington and Ella Fitzgerald .The greats who my Grandma Ada used to have on in her house in Moston. John Leckie (Stone Roses, Radiohead, Plastic Ono Band) was an early admirer of Folks, too, and he told us to just get our heads down and work on songs and not worry about record contracts, songs come first.

What should fans expect from your support slot?

We're really looking forward to the show with Noel, we honestly couldn't be more honoured to be invited to play with him and his new band. We'll perform songs from the album we have due for release in 2012, to give people an idea of exactly who we are. The live performance is heavier than the record too, we hope people will enjoy it.

What are the bands plans for the rest of the year?

We're about to go on tour with Miles Kane throughout the UK just before we join up with Noel Gallagher. Hopefully we will get a few more shows in but to be honest, we're getting ready for the release of our full length debut album, I See Cathedrals, in early 2012.

How did the support for Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds come about?

Noel's manager played him some songs from our record whilst he was making the video for The Death of You and Me. He liked them and shortly afterwards, asked us to support him at The Roundhouse. Noel also asked us to be on BBC Radio 2 when he sat in for Dermot O'Leary recently. It was the first time we’d met him and we had to perform live on the radio with just two hours sleep as we’d been on tour in Scotland. Noel still has a great love of new music. Always looking for stuff and when he likes it, he supports it, he's altruistic and generous to a fault.

Are you looking forward to the show?
It'll be our biggest show to date and we'll be in such good company, We feel very lucky. We will play our hearts out and hopefully let people know exactly why we’re there!

What are your thoughts on the tracks from High Flying Birds?

Noel is a prolific writer, he has written many amazing songs over the years that are the soundtrack to many peoples lives, including my own. That he continues to write great songs is insane. It reminds me that we've got so much to do.

Were you fans of Oasis? If so, when did you first hear them?

I think the first play of 'Supersonic' was on Steve Lamacq's Radio 1 show, and I heard it there. Then a mate gave me a cassette with some tracks on, there was an unbelievable number of great songs which were far better than anything else around. Like everyone else, we became fans. There were no other bands around nearly as good - they wiped the floor with everyone else on the music scene at that time.

Finally what are your favourite Oasis tracks and why?

There are many... Supersonic, Shakermaker, Sad Song, Rock & Roll Star,Acquiesce, Wonderwall, Mucky Fingers, Whatever, Songbird, The Importance Of Being Idle but I think if I had to choose one, it would be 'Whatever' - I'm sure I heard an eight or nine minute version that was ostentatious, ambitious with brilliant strings. It may have sounded like The Beatles but it was clearly Liam & Noel at the height of their powers. I remember thinking they could take on the world with those songs when I heard that.

Miles Kane On Liam And Noel Gallagher

Taken from an interview with Miles Kane, read the full article here.
Kane moved in the same circle as Noel Gallagher, who agreed to do backing vocals on a track called My Fantasy.
Miles laughs at the memory: "When Noel finished recording he asked me, 'Is it alright?', I'm thinking, Noel Gallagher is asking me if his vocals are alright!"
And he supported Liam Gallagher's new band, Beady Eye, on a UK tour in March. "I was totally in awe of Liam," Miles admits.
"As I was waiting to go on stage, Liam walked out of his dressing room, and when he strutted in my direction it was like it was happening in slow motion.
"I didn't know if he was coming to me or someone behind me, but then he put out his arms and said, 'Come here!' and he gave me a big hug. Then he told me, 'I love your song, Come Closer, man. It's f**kin' amazing'. At every gig he watched me from the side of the stage and I'd be buzzin'.
"There was a lot of excitement around those Beady Eye gigs and I think if you like their music, you'll like mine."

Miles Kane On Touring With Beady Eye And Recording With Noel Gallagher

Taken from an interview with Miles Kane from Gigwise, read the full interview here.

When you’re supporting big acts like Arctic Monkeys and Beady Eye – does that help attract a wider fan base?

Yeah, I think when we did the tour with Beady Eye, six dates in the UK and two in Europe and that was around March time. I think after that my confidence has just been growing, I should thank the boys in the band as they’ve helped me grow so much live. I absolutely love what I do, playing those songs and I love rocking out on stage. When I don’t do it for a night I hate it, I’m just totally so happy at the moment and I just want to continue it. Carry on the steady build that we’re doing.

You worked with Noel Gallagher on the album – how was that?

Well I think that was the press blowing things out of the water. For me, we’d been hanging out for a bit and I was mixing in the final stages of the album and he came down to the studio for a hang out and a coffee. I was going in to do my vocals and he was like can you just write down the words for me? And then he just went in and did it, which was ****ing great. So unreal, me sat at the control desk and I’m telling Noel what to do, just a nice afternoon. That story then got completely changed and people made out like he was all over the album, which wasn’t the case.

Miles Kane Compares Arctic Monkeys And Beady Eye Shows At Glastonbury

Miles Kane played his first Glastonbury show as a solo artist this afternoon (June 24), and took the time to chat about the differences between playing gigs with Arctic Monkeys and Beady Eye.

He packed out the John Peel Stage crowd in the early afternoon on Worthy Farm, just as the skies over the site turned grey. Kane played with his Last Shadow Puppets bandmate, Monkeys frontman Alex Turner, at Glastonbury 2008 along with Jack White.

Chatting about supporting Arctic Monkeys (pictured below) at Sheffield’s Don Valley Bowl earlier this month he said: “The Don Valley shows were great. There was a lot of love there. The Monkeys crowd really welcomed us and got into it.”

Talking about the difference between supporting Alex Turner and co and supporting Beady Eye, which he also did recently, he added: “It was different. The Monkeys was a bit more like a festival vibe. It was brilliant of Liam [Gallagher] and that to take us out, but that was a bit more respectful.”

Returning his focus to Glastonbury, he recalled his earliest memory of the festival. “When I first came when I was 15 I ate nothing but brunch bars because I didn't wanna shit,” he declared.

Miles Kane Talks Beady Eye And Oasis

Taken from an interview with Miles Kane from contactmusic.com, read the full article here.

So what do you think your album has brought to the UK chart which may have been lacking before?

I think my album is bringing the rock and roll thing back to UK music. Like Oasis - I mean, I'm not comparing myself to them - but I'm bringing that kind of music back into 2011. It's not an X-Factor type of thing; it's solo and quite ballsy. I suppose it's got swagger, but I don't mean that in an arrogant way. It's good to still be rewarded for making that kind of honest music.

You're a big Oasis fan and are friendly with Liam and Noel. What did it mean to you to support Beady Eye on tour?

It meant so much that they asked me. I love Liam, so to be at Beady Eye's first gigs was exciting and one of the best tours I've done. Sometimes on support you feel a bit like there's no point if people didn't come to see you specifically, but with the Beady Eye tour it was perfect. We gained a lot, and people were getting there early just to see us. Travelling with my band is great too as I've known them all for a long time.

Miles Kane: 'Noel Gallagher Is A Legend'

Miles Kane has praised Noel Gallagher for helping him out with his debut solo record 'The Colour Of The Trap', which is released next week (May 9).

The Last Shadow Puppets man spoke to NME about the hook-up before playing a solo set at the Camden Crawl 2011 yesterday (April 30).

Kane explained that the collaboration with Gallagher on new track 'My Fantasy' came about pretty late in the day.

"He just came down one afternoon when I was mixing to have a cup of coffee and ended up doing a bit of singing. It was a beautiful afternoon, what a legend," he recalled.

Kane also confirmed he would never play Last Shadow Puppets songs during his solo shows and praised bandmate Alex Turner's latest material with Arctic Monkeys on their forthcoming new album 'Suck It And See'.

"I love their new record, I think it's amazing, the fans are gonna love it," he said, before enthusing about his own new material.

"It's very exciting to be getting out and doing these gigs, there's a great buzz and that makes me buzz," Kane concluded.

He went on to play ten songs during his gig at the HMV Forum, including 'Inhaler' and 'Come Closer'.

Miles Kane On Liam & Noel Gallagher

Taken from an interview with Miles Kane.

Miles Kane may be a dapper young rocker with the world at his feet, but occasionally he sounds like a shell-shocked veteran sharing war stories. "Fame is a learning curve," he says in a treacly Liverpool burr. "One minute you're at number one and you're shagging loads of birds. And it's easy. What's hard is when reality strikes and you're back in the basement."

It was at that point that Noel Gallagher entered the story, though Kane is distinctly cagey about the subject. As is his record label, a representative of which politely requests we not go overboard on the Noel questions, no matter that his guitar solo on My Fantasy is a highlight of Kane's LP. Chatting to Miles before Christmas, the singer was happy to discuss their collaboration.

Today, in contrast, he is crestfallen when Noel's name is mentioned. It's as if you've asked what colour Y-fronts he's wearing.

Why so circumspect? It appears Kane created a bit of cyberspace kerfuffle after he let slip he had guested on Noel's hush-hush solo album, the existence of which remains a subject of wild conjecture. Confirming Noel was working on a record was apparently tantamount to tweeting the third secret of Fatima, and Kane has had to do some backpedalling.

"No offence to you, but the media blow these things out of the water," he says. "All it is is that one song. He came down when we were mixing. We had a coffee and a KitKat. That was it. It's been built out of all proportion. I don't really know him that well. I've only met him a couple of times. But that was a great afternoon, one that I'll cherish."

If anything he's friendlier with Liam, who hand-picked Kane to support his new band, Beady Eye, on their inaugural jaunt around the UK. In what seems to be a recurring theme in Kane's life and career, their first meeting was a bit haphazard.

"I'd only met him once, falling around the bar. We had a chat and got on. He'd heard a few songs and asked me to do the tour. It was a great honour. He'd come and watch me every night from the side. I'm chuffed. Not to compare myself to Oasis, but they've been a big part of my life. You grew your hair to look like them. I think they can appreciate that you are following in their footsteps."

Miles Kane On The Gallagher's

Miles Kane has spoken about working with both Noel and Liam Gallagher recently.

Falling out just one time too many, Noel and Liam Gallagher have not spoken since that fateful day in France. However the animosity between the two has not affected several people from cross no man's land.

The new members of Beady Eye apparently remain close to Noel Gallagher, while Miles Kane has worked with both brothers. Gallagher Snr popped into the studio to lay down backing vocals on his new album, while the Liverpool singer has just completed a stint on tour with Beady Eye.

Speaking to Absolute Radio, Miles Kane down-played Noel Gallagher's contribution to his new material. "Again that’s a thing the press blow out of the water, but I was mixing my record and he came down one afternoon to hang out, and I was going to put these harmonies on and he ended up doing it" he explained.

"I just met him a couple of times really and it was just one of them things where I was mixing, he was about and came in to say hello and had a Kit Kat and a coffee and sang a bit of BVs, you know."

Meanwhile, Miles Kane also enjoyed his time with Beady Eye. "It was great, you know, we had the time of our lives there. You know, it was an honour to get asked and we had a great time and the gigs were good."

However despite working with both sides of the Gallagher divide, Miles Kane retains a special affection for Welsh singer Gruff Rhys. "Before making this record we was on a bit of a come-down and he sort of gave me a boost real early on when I went in to do my first recording session on my own. It was just me, him, and Craig Silvey, and this drummer that he got in, and we recorded a song called King Crawler and Take the Night From Me that are on the record, and that was the first thing I did. You know, when you’re listening back to it you thought ‘Well this just sounds amazing’, so I always thank him for that”.

“When I was whatever, 14, 15. I think Super Furry Animals was one of the first gigs me and my mate bought a ticket for and you waited ages to go, you know, you went and then it’s the first time you scored the mosh pit or whatever. You know, even bought a t-shirt, and when I got home my mother said I was never the same since really, and it did change my life, man.”

The interview with Miles Kane will be broadcast on Absolute Radio on May 9th.

Noel Gallagher Sings On Miles Kane's Debut Album

Wirral singer songwriter Miles Kane's debut album will feature harmonies sung by Noel Gallagher.

The Oasis star sings on the track My Fantasy on Kane's first solo album, Colour Of The Trap.

The album, released on 9 May, also features two tracks produced by Super Furry Animals' musician Gruff Rhys.

Kane, formerly of the Last Shadow Puppets and Wirral band The Rascals, is currently supporting Liam Gallagher's new project Beady Eye on their UK tour.

He told the BBC that working with Noel Gallagher was a spontaneous collaboration.

"I was mixing my album, he came down for a coffee, I was gonna put these harmonies on and he ended up doing it. Simple as that."

Kane admits that working with the biggest names in the industry has helped him to develop his solo career.

"It's great to have this kind of support at such an early stage."

"During my first week of recording as a solo artist he [Gruff Rhys] really boosted my confidence. I can't think him enough and I'd love to work with him again.

"He's a lovely guy and he has a great aura about him."

Kane's album also worked with San Francisco-based hip-hop producer Dan 'The Automator' Nakamura on the album, and says as he has adapted to writing on his own, his work has become more emotional.

"There's a lot of feelings on this record. And I wasn't afraid to put them on there because I thought, 'if I'm going to do it, then I'm going to let it all out there'. I've laid it all on the line."

Mile Kane will be performing at St Georges Hall for Liverpool Sound City on 20 May 2011.

Miles Kane Eyes Liam And Noel Gallagher

Miles Kane - Inhaler on MUZU.

The Last Shadow Puppets tunesmith turned solo singer Miles Kane has found himself in the middle of the warring Gallagher brothers.

The Scouse lad, who’s taking time out from the band he fronts with Arctic Monkeys’ Alex Turner, 25, has hooked up with Noel, 43, on his new album.

But he is also gearing up to go on tour with 38-year-old Liam’s new band Beady Eye next month.

Last week Liam announced there would never be an Oasis reunion and called his older brother “a little bitch”.

Could be tricky but Miles, 24, has vowed not to take sides. He said: “Noel is a lovely fella. He sings backing vocals on a track called My Fantasy on my album.

“He came down to see me when I was recording one afternoon and I was doing backing vocals so he said he’d sing as well.

“It sounds cool and his voice sounds great. We get on well.”

Miles, whose new tune Come Closer is out this week, added: “I don’t really know Liam yet but I’m really looking forward to hanging out with him. I was honoured he asked me to support Beady Eye on tour.

“It comes off the back of my own tour, so I’ll have to have plenty of vitamins to see me through.

“I admire Liam’s style and I think it’s important to look sharp. Clothes are important to me. Some people may not agree with that but I believe it’s important.”

The singer will get the chance to get to know Liam better at tomorrow’s NME Awards, where Beady Eye are up for Best New Band.

He has just put the finishing touches to debut solo album Colour Of The Trap, out in May.

He said: “It has a classic rock ’n’ roll sound.

“I know a lot of acts say that but I’ve got the songs to back it up.”

(What's the Story) Morning Glory?, Oasis

I think it was (What's the Story) Morning Glory? I know it sounds obvious but I'm sure I got it from Woolworths. I was always a big Oasis fan. Noel sings harmony on a track on my record. It was only a little thing but he came to the studio for an afternoon and hung out. It was lovely. I love Beady Eye too, especially Four Letter Word. We're supporting them in March which I can't wait for. They're both lovely lads. It's great to see them back. Hopefully they'll bring a bit of rock and roll to the charts. There's not one guitar band in the top forty. I'd love to get in the charts and have it. The radio is awful at the minute - just so boring. It needs to change. My record's rock and roll but there's a pop element there too. I want my records in the charts and on the radio. I want to get it out there and break that barrier. It's influenced by John Lennon and T-Rex. It's got that groove feel. You can have a good dance to it, I love it.
