Live Webchat With Noel Gallagher Later Today

Noel Gallagher will be doing a live global webchat later today giving fans the opportunity to question him about Noel Gallagher's High Flying Birds, his forthcoming album and live dates, or anything else they've always wanted to ask.

The global webchat, compered by friend Matt Morgan, is scheduled to broadcast later today (22nd August) from 19:00 (UK time).

Fans can watch the chat live through Noel's official Facebook page HERE!

Questions can be submitted live during the broadcast through Facebook and Twitter using the hashtag #AskNoel.

The webchat will also be recorded so fans unable to view the broadcast live can catch it again on Noel's Facebook page from 21:00 EST (Eastern Standard Time USA) then on Noel's YouTube channel shortly afterwards.

On This Day In Oasis History...

"The Importance Of Being Idle" is a song on the British rock band Oasis' sixth album, Don't Believe the Truth, written and sung by lead guitarist Noel Gallagher. It was the second single released from the album in the UK, on August 22, 2005, where it debuted at #1. It was also the first time that Oasis earned two successive #1's in the same calendar year. It was written by Gallagher sometime during the summer of 2004, before the band made their final attempt at recording what would become Don't Believe the Truth. He got the title from the Mark Twain book of the same name which he found whilst cleaning out his garage (it belonged not to him but to girlfriend Sara McDonald.)

Musically, as Noel has commented, the song sounds like tunes from two British bands, The Kinks and The La's. In particular, the sentiment expressed is noticeably similar to The Kinks' "Sunny Afternoon" and "Dead End Street", and the use of falsetto for every other verse line recalls The La's "Feelin'". The guitar sound is similar also to The La's b-sides; "Clean Prophet" and "Over". It also is a breakaway from the sound of Oasis's latter albums, especially the straight ahead rock 'n' roll anthems of Heathen Chemistry. The keyboard used on the pre-chorus sections was bought by bassist Andy Bell from the auction website eBay.

Noel has said that the lyrics of "The Importance of Being Idle" are inspired by his own laziness. Some of the second verse, with the reference to begging his doctor for "one more line", seems to be referring to an actual event as this resembles Noel's account of how he gave up cocaine in 1998.




















Most reviewers acclaimed the track as one of the highlights of Don't Believe the Truth, which itself was widely praised as a marked return to form. The band mentioned in interviews in June that it would become the second single, after the UK Number One "Lyla". The b-sides are Liam Gallagher's "Pass Me Down the Wine" and Gem Archer's "The Quiet Ones."



The promo film was directed by Dawn Shadforth, (whose previous videos include Kylie Minogue's award-winning "Can't Get You Out Of My Head"). Shadforth's film for "The Importance of Being Idle' starred Welsh actor Rhys Ifans and homages the style of early 1960s kitchen sink drama British films, and is set during the build up to a funeral procession in a northern town, with the extravagant undertakers parading the coffin at the video's climax and Ifans playing the part of a high-kicking funeral director. The video is based on the film and play Billy Liar with Ifans playing the role of Billy. Noel and Liam therefore play Shadrack & Duxbury, the owners of the funeral parlour where Billy works. The rest band (Gem,Andy and Zak) make a brief appearance as lazy workers playing cards in an undertaker's office. It was widely acclaimed at the time as being probably the best video Oasis had ever made, not least by the band themselves, who were said to be very happy with the finished product. The video is very similar in style and concept to the music video for "Dead End Street" by The Kinks.

Q Magazine readers placed the song at #1 in a list of 2005's greatest tracks.

The video for the song was voted the video of the year at the NME Awards.

The song is included on Oasis' 'best-of' album Stop the Clocks.

Noel Gallagher Hints At Possible Oasis At Knebworth DVD

In an interview with German music magazine 'Musikexpress', Noel Gallagher has hinted at a DVD release of the legendary Oasis Knebworth gigs.

Journalist: Why were your gigs at Knebworth never released on DVD? They were recorded professionally, weren't they?

Noel: I know something you don't know. Let me tell you this: 2015 will be the 20th anniversary of "Morning Glory"

On This Day In Oasis History...

Be Here Now is the third studio album by the English rock band Oasis. Released on August 21 1997, the album was highly anticipated by both music critics and fans as a result of the band's previous worldwide successes with their 1994 debut album Definitely Maybe, and its 1995 follow up (What's the Story) Morning Glory?. The album's pre-release build up led to considerable hype within both the music and mainstream press. At that point, Oasis were at the height of their fame, and Be Here Now became the UK's fastest selling album to date, selling over 420,000 units on the first day of release alone, and over one million within two weeks. As of 2007, the album has sold eight million copies worldwide.

Oasis' management company Ignition were aware of the danger of overexposure, and before its release they sought to control the media's access to the album. Ignition's campaign included limiting pre-release radio airplay, and requesting that journalists sign gag agreements. These tactics resulted in the alienation of members of both the music and mainstream media, as well as many industry members connected with the band. Ignition's attempts to limit pre-release access to the album only served to fuel large scale speculation and publicity within the British music scene.

Artistically Be Here Now failed to live up to the expectations that preceded its release. Although initial reviews were positive, retrospectively the album is viewed by much of the music press and by most members of the band as over-indulgent and bloated. In 2007, Q magazine described Be Here Now as "a disastrous, overblown folly—the moment when Oasis, their judgement clouded by drugs and blanket adulation, ran aground on their own sky-high self-belief." The album's producer Owen Morris said of the recording sessions: "The only reason anyone was there was the money. Noel had decided Liam was a shit singer. Liam had decided he hated Noel's songs [...] Massive amounts of drugs. Big fights. Bad vibes. Shit recordings." None of its songs were included on the band's 2006 "best of" compilation album Stop the Clocks.

The cover image to Be Here Now was shot at the Stock Hotel in Hertfordshire in April 1997. It features the band standing outside the hotel surrounded by assorted props. At the centre of the image is a Rolls Royce floating in a swimming pool. The photographer Michael Spencer Johns said the original concept involved shooting each band member in various locations around the world, but when the cost proved prohibitive, the shoot was relocated to the Stock Hotel. Spencer remarked that the shoot "degenerated into chaos", adding that "by 8pm, everyone was in the bar, there were schoolkids all over the set, and the lighting crew couldn't start the generator.

Despite various meanings people have tried to read into the selection of the cover props, Johns said Gallagher simply selected items from the BBC props store he thought would look good in the picture. Two of the props that had considered thought in their inclusion were the inflatable globe (intended as a homage to the sleeve of Definitely Maybe) and the Rolls Royce, which was suggested by Arthurs. The release date in each region was commemorated on the calendar pictured on the sleeve; Harris said the dating "[encouraged] fans to believe that to buy a copy on the day it appeared was to participate in some kind of historical event."

Noel Gallagher: Mancini Right Manager For Manchester City

Manchester City celebrity fan Noel Gallagher says Roberto Mancini is the right manager for the club.

The Oasis frontman is particularly impressed by Mancini's man-management.

Noel told Absolute Radio: "I think there’s a bit of both, you know, there’s a lot of money at Chelsea and they didn’t win anything last season, well they did the season before, but I think he’s spent really, really well, and I think he knows what he wants, and I think to have won the FA Cup last season, they had such a great season with a band of players who were, if you believe the press, at each other’s throats all the time, means he’s got some kind of man management skills, but I like him."

Noel Gallagher: My Night On The Booze With Paul Gascoigne And His Parrot

Noel Gallagher has revealed how he went boozing with Rangers legend Paul Gascoigne – and a Parrot.

The former Oasis star revealed he often met Gazza for drinking sessions when he played at Ibrox.

And the songwriter recalled one bizarre night involving the England international and a feathered friend.

Gallagher said: “We met Gascoigne. He used to come when he was playing for Rangers. We had a few nights out with him.

“I remember one with him and, no word of a lie, a parrot. Don’t ask what happened, but there was a swimming pool involved.

“We were all wasted. It was when Rangers were signing loads of Italian players and they were all coming to the gigs. I think we were just in the bar havin’ it and Gascoigne was there smoking loads of cigars.

“I went, ‘Are you playing tomorrow?’ and he went, ‘Yep’. I thought, f****** hell.
“Players like Gascoigne are a one-off. If Gazza was playing now, he would be on £140-150 grand a week. I’m sure there would be all sorts of clauses in that contract, so I don’t think the likes of Gazza would survive in the modern game.

“Gazza wasn’t really an athlete, he was a force of nature.”

Gallagher often met star players from both sides of the Old Firm divide while touring with Oasis.

He was introduced to many of the Scottish game’s biggest names by former Creation Records founder and diehard Rangers fan Alan McGee.

Gallagher – who releases his debut solo single next week – admitted he had an affection for Celtic and hailed the fiery Old Firm atmosphere.

The Manchester City fanatic told Sky Sports Soccer Saturday show about his love for the Hoops.

But he admitted that following the Hoops caused problems at home with Scottish wife and Bluenose Sara MacDonald.

He said: “That’s an Irish thing. I used to love watching the Old Firm games in the Eighties. Then about 11 years ago, we ramped it up a bit in our house when I met my wife. She’s a staunch Rangers fan.

“It was like: ‘Right, let’s f****** get this on then’. Only recently have Celtic been on equal terms with that mob.

“I’ve been to Celtic Park and heard the entire crowd sing Roll With It before the game. It really was spine-tingling.

“I was at Martin O’Neill’s first Old Firm game as manager when Celtic won 6-2. Henrik Larsson scored a couple and it was honestly the best game of football I’ve ever been to.
“I would say to any football fan, no matter who you support and if you can get tickets, go to an Old Firm game at Celtic Park. Unbelievable.”

Gallagher believes the Old Firm derby even beats the bitter rivalry between Manchester City and Manchester United.

He added: “Well, I’m from Manchester and there is no love lost in those games. It’s on a par with the Old Firm.

“But Celtic Park is huge and it’s a lot more colourful.

“The Manchester derby, the Poznan (a dance adopted from a Polish side by City fans) is a spectacle now but we have only just got that.

“Up at Celtic Park, when they all sing with the scarves going up, it really is something else.

Noel Gallagher To Play At The Olympics Opening Ceremony?

Noel Gallagher is reported to be among the acts who are lined up to perform at the opening of the 2012 Olympics in London.

Noel Gallagher told Sky Sports that he's been invited to the opening ceremony. When questioned if he had been given the offer to play the songwriter said "I'm not allowed to say, but I'll be there. I might go along with the kids. It looks like it might be a laugh".

Noel has reportedly been at the top of organisers wish-list of acts to perform at the opening ceremony of the prestigious sporting event. Coldplay, Muse, and Blur frontman Damon Albarn are also said to be in the running to join a star-studded line-up at the launch of the event in July next year.

Noel Gallagher's Big Fat X-cuse

Noel Gallagher finally convinced Simon Cowell to stop bugging him about a role on the X Factor by saying he would only put through fat people and "midgets".

The ex-Oasis star said he had been repeatedly offered a job on the telly talent show by boss Simon because the media mogul wanted him to act as the programme's "alpha male".

Guitarist Noel, 44, said he finally put Simon off by warning the reality chief he would deliberately put through odd acts if he took a place on the show's judging panel.

He told Manchester radio station Key 103: "[Simon Cowell] was saying we're going to revamp the show... and he was saying that we need somebody to - how he put it - be the alpha male.

"He said, 'Basically somebody to replace me', and I was like 'What you mean have all the kids round my house in the back garden and saying to big lunatics 'I've made my decision and I can only take three...'

"No, that's not going to happen in my house, the missus would kick off for a start and I've got a four-year-old lad who's on a power trip at the minute and he'd be like, 'You're rubbish, shut up'."

The musician added: "He's a nice guy but I was like, 'You don't want me on there', and he was saying we do, and I was saying you really don't want me on there, because I will just put through obese people... or midgets."
