Oasis Concert Passes Peacefully

Yesterday's Oasis concert in Slane passed off with little trouble, gardaí said today.

Ten people were arrested on public order offences throughout the day, with two people detain on suspicion of drink driving.

A garda spokesman said those arrested at the event will appear before district courts in the locality.

Security was tight as 80,000 fans made their way to the Meath town from noon.

Extra manpower was also on patrol around the banks of the Boyne after two people drowned when the Manchester band played back-up to US rockers REM in 1995.

As The Prodigy, Kasabian, Glasvegas, and The Blizzards warmed up the crowd, Noel and Liam Gallagher brother’s extended Irish family soaked up the sunshine and atmosphere backstage in the VIP
area.

The hyped-up crowd then erupted as the Mancunian act took to the stage and kicked off the open air gig with Rock N Roll Star.

For almost two hours the group wowed fans with a mix of their most iconic classics like Roll With It and Wonderwall with some of their newer hits.

Cigarettes And No Toll - Oasis Frontman On Wales

Rowdy Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher gave more than a great performance when his band were in Cardiff 10 days ago.

He gave one Welsh fan a forthright take on playing in the capital, life on the road and what he thinks of Welsh songstress Duffy.

The Manchester megastar said he enjoys coming to Wales “when you get in for nowt”.

Referring to the band’s trip over the Severn Bridge he said: “Yeah, I don’t know about that ******* paying to get in, but we got in tonight for nowt.

“We were stuck in traffic and the police came and helped us in, so that was nice.

“We had our money ready and everything but they just went ‘You’re all right’.

“Miracles do happen.”

He went on to tell Cardiff super fan Louise Davies that he “didn’t know there was a Welsh music scene” – even though his band was being supported at the Millennium Stadium gig by Welsh group The Peth.

“I’ve not heard the ******* Peth man,” the 36-year-old singer said. “I got here late.

“Nah, I do like Rhys, I like The Super Furry Animals and all that stuff.

“Stereophonics are cool and the Manic Street Preachers.”

He had harsh words for retro soul star, Grammy and Brit Award-winning Duffy.

“She was all right ’til she opened her mouth.

“The music’s alright, know what I mean?

“Until she did that ******* stupid advert and things like that.

“It’s ******* ridiculous.”

Oasis Are Rock Kings Of The Castle

Definitely no maybes as Britpop legends thrill 80,000 fans

Oasis, the one-time kings of Britpop, rolled back the years in front of 80,000 ecstatic fans on the banks of the Boyne last night.

Fourteen years after they last played Slane Castle, the Gallagher Brothers are back at the top -- and it was a champagne supernova performance that wowed the huge crowd.

That promised heat wave never did come but the kings of Mancunian cool turned up the heat from the first song.

Noel Gallagher admitted before the gig that his memories of the last time they visited Lord Henry Mount Charles's back garden were somewhat hazy.

But it must have all come back to him as he looked down at the huge crowd packed into the natural amphitheatre of one of the world's truly great rock venues.

And for the Gallagher brothers it was very much a family affair, with a huge contingent of the extended clan given VIP access for a gig that became something of a homecoming for a band still proud of their Mayo roots.

Kicking off with Rock N Roll Star, the hill erupted as the British pop legends banged out some of their newest hits, such as Lyla and Shock of the Lightning, before delighting the crowd with classics including Roll With It, Wonderwall and their massive smash hit anthem Don't Look Back In Anger.

The united voice of thousands of the band's die-hard followers could be heard for miles around the castle as the laconic Manchester outfit rocked it up.

Back at the VIP garden party, scores of the brothers' extended family lapped up the atmosphere at a gig that is regarded as the first big date of the Summer.

They could be seen living it up with other VIP guests in the cocktail bar, champagne room and Irish whiskey tent.

Manchester City star Stephen Ireland -- who is said to be a hero of the lads -- was also on the list to party the night away alongside fellow footballer and former Irish international Gary Kelly, who hails from just up the road in Drogheda.

Other celebrity guests at the gig included surprise Oasis fans lawyer Gerald Keane and RTE star Marty Whelan.

Welcoming them with open arms, Henry Mount Charles said: "A combination of the Prodigy and Oasis in the year 2009 is hard to beat -- and I'd like to officially declare Noel and Liam Gallagher honourary Slane people."

He also thanked the people of Slane for giving the concert the go-ahead.

As darkness began to descend on the castle, throngs of satisfied revellers made their way up the steep incline and home.

The imposing castle, seat of the aristocratic Mount Charles family, was the only thing left bustling with life. And one couldn't help but wonder whether the rest of us were missing the real party.

Earlier, high-profile warm-up acts, including The Prodigy and Kasabian, entertained the crowd during the afternoon, as well as Mullingar band The Blizzards, who put on a high-energy set that was full of verve.

That kept the fans more than happy but there was no doubt who the real stars were.

With a whopping 70 million records sold worldwide, the crowd were left in no doubt that they were in the presence of a band that had shaped a generation.

This stadium tour sees the group -- completed by guitarist Gem Archer, bassist Andy Bell and drummer Chris Sharrock -- play to their biggest audiences yet but it's doubtful they will ever forget their second visit to Slane. It was a triumph.

Liam Gallagher Hires Chopper To Get To Chip Shop

Oasis frontman Liam Gallagher was so desperate for an upmarket chip butty while on tour in Manchester he hired a helicopter to fly him to a Lake District hotel.

Liam, 36, and Tom Meighan, 28, singer with rock band Kasabian who are supporting Oasis, landed in a field next to the Miller Howe Hotel in Windermere.

The manager, Nigel Williamson, said yesterday: "It was bizarre. I went out to meet them and Liam came striding across the fields in leopard-print shoes."

The rock stars ate chip butties with tomato sauce and drank Pinot Grigio white wine and tequila in the hotel conservatory.

Nigel said: "Their language was quite colourful so it was just as well they had a private room."

Gallagher Brothers Ready To Rock 80,000 In Slane

The Gallagher brothers -- Noel and Liam -- breezed into town yesterday and reminisced about their the old days as Oasis prepared to play in front of 80,000 fans at Slane.

They once ruled the world of Britpop. But after endless rows and falling outs, the band almost faded into pop history.

Now they're back and, against all odds, selling out the biggest venues in Ireland and Britain.

The brothers admitted that their memories of playing in Ireland are always a little hazy.

"You get an instant hangover when you get here," reflected front man Liam yesterday.

He observed that the one stand-out memory he has of his first-ever gig in Slane was of "Adam Clayton coming and robbing all our cigs".

He also revealed that the opening song for today's sell-out show will be 'Rock 'n' Roll Star' -- the first song on the band's debut album.

The spotlight will be firmly on the Oasis boys this time around -- the last time they played in Slane they were second billing to REM.

The show also boasts a bevy of high-profile warm-up acts, including The Prodigy and Kasabian, to entertain the crowd during the afternoon.

Meanwhile, traffic diversions have been put in place today from 8am for all through traffic. While local access will be maintained, diversions will stay in place until 2pm tomorrow.

Fans travelling to the concert from the north on the M1 are encouraged to leave the motorway at the Collon exit where they will be diverted to Slane on the N2. Parking will be available at designated car parks.

Motorists driving to the concert from the south on the M1 are encouraged to take the Drogheda North/Slane exit (junction 10).

Dublin Bus is operating a bus transfer to the castle that departs from Parnell Square West from 12pm to 6pm today. Return tickets cost €20 and can be purchased from the Dublin Bus premises on Upper O'Connell Street, the Sound Cellar in Nassau Street, the arrival hall at Dublin Airport and from any Ticketmaster outlet.

20,000 Take Up Oasis' Money-Back Offer

Oasis star Noel Gallagher revealed around 20,000 "cheeky" people asked for their money back after their Heaton Park show was hit by technical problems.

The band were twice forced to leave the stage when they played the homecoming gig earlier this month due to a power fault.

The band went on to play a full set but as a gesture of goodwill concertgoers were offered their ticket money back.

The guitarist said: "It seems that around 20,000 of you have asked for a refund from that night at Heaton Park. 20,000! So you were genuinely disappointed?

"I don't recall seeing a 20,000 gap in the crowd. Tsk... some people," he wrote on his online blog.

Around 70,000 people saw the band abandon their opening track only for them to return and be driven off once more when they tried the second song.

At the time, Gallagher told fans: "We're not getting paid for this so buy a t-shirt on the way out. Credit crunch and that, keep my kids in sweets. Kind of regret offering you your money back now."

Family Affair As Gallaghers Hit Slane

When the band last played Slane, as a support to headliners REM in 1995, they brought an entourage of Irish relatives.

The Manchester-born brothers have Irish parents. Their estranged father Tommy is from Duleek, Co Meath, their mother Peggy (née Sweeney) is from Charlestown, Co Mayo.

Slane Castle owner Henry Mountcharles said in 1995 the Gallaghers had 80 Irish relatives at the concert.

“The last time they (Oasis) played Slane there was still a nightclub operating in the castle. I never seen so many Gallaghers in the one room. We were lucky to get them out of the place. There are more Gallaghers now,” he said.

When the concert was announced in October, Noel Gallagher said his mother would definitely be attending. “She’ll be like the Queen of Sheeba,” he predicted.

In his blog on the official Oasis website, Noel Gallagher name-checked a few uniquely Irish treats which he has often mentioned in the past were part of his summers spent in Ireland.

“Off to Dublin today where, for one night only, we will welcome The Prodigy to the tour. Slane Castle tomorrow. Silvermints, Tayto crisps and brunches! YUMMY,” he wrote.

All 80,000 tickets for the concert have been sold after new ones which went on sale this week eventually sold-out.

It is a significant achievement for a band whose musical and popular heyday was back in the mid-1990s when they were the forefront of Brit Pop with their debut album Definitely Maybe and its multi-million follow-up What’s the Story (Morning Glory) .

The band will go on stage at 8.30pm. The support acts will be The Prodigy, Glasvegas, Kasabian and The Blizzards.

A back up generator will be provided to avoid the debacle which happened at Heaton Park in their native Manchester when the PA system cut out several times and Noel Gallagher offered to give the 70,000 crowd their money back.

Around 20,000 fans have taken him up on the offer. “No, you're not getting your money back!! So you were genuinely disappointed? I don't recall seeing a 20,000 gap in the crowd,” Gallagher retorted.

The forecast for tomorrow's concert is good with highs of between 17C and 18C and with little breeze and a strong sun, it may be a day for sunscreen.

“There might be a slight risk of a shower in the morning, but it will clear up by midday. It will be nice enough but not as warm as it is going to be next week,” said Met Éireann forecaster Dr Aidan Nulty.

Liam Gallagher On Fans And Snobby Mums And More

There was blood, there was rock'n'roll, and there were irate primary school mums. It was just another day in the life of Liam Gallagher.

But as the dust settled the day after Oasis had graced the stage at Murrayfield, the band's frontman was still "up for it" as he embarked on a tour of the city's pubs.

Stopping to chat with fans, pose for photographs and sign autographs, he called in at The Jinglin' Geordie in Fleshmarket Close yesterday afternoon, where one of the locals from the neighbouring Halfway House invited him for another tipple.

He headed down the Close and spent an hour and a half tucked into a corner booth of Edinburgh's smallest boozer.

Pub owner Steve Whiting said: "I said I'd stand him the first one, so I bought him a Guinness. He looked like he was enjoying himself. The first thing he did was go straight to the jukebox and put the Stones and the Beatles on. He was chatting with all the locals, he seemed very personable indeed. He said the gig had gone very well."

A pint or two into his walkabout, Liam slipped out for a cigarette and a chat to the Evening News, ready to wax lyrical about the Capital, which he described as: "Beautiful, amazing, f****** biblical, in fact. Words can't explain it, it's just something that's out of my realm, really f****** beautiful. The best it can be."

He said he'd decided to opt for a liquid lunch after failing to get a feed at his hotel: "I rang room service at about half 11 and said 'Can I have breakfast?' They said 'No' so I said 'Can I have dinner then?', and they said 'No', so I thought I'll have a pint and meet the people," he said.

Asked if he was "chuffed" with the way the gig had gone, he said: "I don't do it to be chuffed, I do it because it's something that's got to be done. I wouldn't do it to enjoy it, it's not about being a smiley-pants. My reason is to make people happy and not break people's days, to make people's days. The crowd was beautiful."

Not everybody's day was made by the band's arrival. As the News reported on Wednesday, parents at Roseburn Primary, close to Murrayfield, were fuming when the council closed the school for the afternoon because of the crowds expected in the area.

On stage, Liam dedicated Cigarettes and Alcohol to "everyone who had half a day off" and the "snobby" mums at Roseburn, but in the cold light of day, he reflected: "They didn't p*** me off, I thought it was cool. I just hate posh people who work all day. It's about time they spent time with their kids and I reckon they should have had a full day off with their kids, not just a half day off. It's about the kids."

The night was also marred by violence when a man was badly beaten up on the pitch before Oasis arrived onstage, but Liam was laid back about the ruck: "I didn't see it. But that's f****** Oasis man, that's rock and roll. Fine, if that's what people want to talk about, but fighting at a rock and roll concert, f****** hell, do they not scrap here every night when someone stands on their kebab? Is it the first f****** fight that's ever happened in Edinburgh?"

On which note, he made his way back up Fleshmarket Close, stopping to be photographed with a blushing fan, who said: "Sorry, you must get so fed up of this."

"No, I f****** love it," he replied.

Tales From The Middle Of Nowhere

Taken from Noel's tour diary for oasisinet.com

Hello? Is there anybody out there? Been having technical problems with the lines of communication of late. Sorry for the break in transmission. Normal service is now resumed - and no, you're not getting your money back!! While I'm on that subject, it seems that around 20,000 of you have asked for a refund from that night at Heaton Park!! 20,000!! So you were genuinely disappointed? I don't recall seeing a 20,000 gap in the crowd. Cheeky cunts! Tsk ..some people.

Anyway, no such problems in Scotland. Gig at Murrayfield was great. Great crowd, as always. The Enemy and Kasabian were on top form. Didn't see The Reverend.

Apart from - yet again! - some poor DJ'ing from Romeo the party in the dressing room was a good-un. Didn't leave 'til the sun came up. Respect to Kasabian. They were still there when I left and they had a gig in Glasgow last night! Fuck that. They must've been rough as arseholes.

Off to Dublin today where, for one night only, we will welcome The Prodigy to the tour. Slane Castle tomorrow. Silvermints, Tayto crisps and brunches! YUMMY.

In a bit.

GD.

Elvis Costello 'Noel Gallagher Is Deluded'

Elvis Costello speaking to the Telegraph in a recent interview.

"I think I can do Paul McCartney better than Noel Gallagher can do Paul McCartney, Noel is deluded about a lot of things, most obviously that he is a songwriter at all. That he even brackets himself in the same sentence as Paul is laughable ."

ZANI Chat To Alan McGee About Music And More

Music web zine Zani sat down with Creation Records founder Alan McGee. Here's a small excerpt :

ZANI - The first ten years of Creation were exciting, with signings such as Primal Scream and Jesus and Mary Chain, who sold to Blanco Y Negro for £75,000. What were the first ten years like for Creation Records, I guess that is pretty hard to sum up?

Alan McGee - For the first four years, I saw it as a hobby. Then in 1988, The House Of Love went gold, and My Bloody Valentine went silver. Around the end of 1988, or the start of 1989, I then realised it was a prober job. As Creation was seen as being responsible of critical acclaimed albums during this period

ZANI – Like Screamadelica.

Alan McGee - That was 1991.

ZANI – I know, but I adore that album, but still in the first ten years.

Alan McGee - I signed Primal Scream but nobody liked them. But people liked a lot of the other acts on Creation. Like The Weather Prophets, My Bloody Valentine and The House of Love. During this period, I was getting a lot of respect from the public and the industry and I was enjoying that. Then we started to move into the bigger stuff and shift albums and I think at that point, is when Creation became a real business.

ZANI – Going back to Primal Scream, and the remark you made that no one really liked them. But it was the track Loaded in 1990 that put them on the map and won them a whole new audience, the Acid House generation. Do you think that the DJ Andy Weatherall was hugely instrumental in the success of this single and the album Screamadelica?

Alan McGee - To be honest before this point they weren’t very good. Primal Scream would be in denial about this. Andy Weatherall took one bit from their single Losing More Than I'll Ever Have, and mixed it.

Then Primal Scream suddenly reinvented themselves as this big dance rock band, but I think they were a little before their time. But I don’t listen to their singles anymore; I don't listen to their music anymore to be honest. I only listen to two bands from Creation in 2009.

ZANI – I know, Oasis and Teenage Fan club, why not the others?

Alan McGee - It’s nothing personal, I mean that about all the records I have put out over the years, I just don’t listen to them anymore. There only two bands, that I still listen to, for enjoyment, that is Teenage Fan Club and Oasis. Teenage Fan’s "Everything Flows" still gets me every time. It came out before I signed them and I signed them on the strength of this.

ZANI - I still love Oasis, and they seem to be back with vengeance. As we know, your meeting with Oasis on 18th May at 1993 Glasgow King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut is legendary. What was it that really turned you on about them, or is that unexplainable?

Alan McGee - They were just good, it that’s simple. Noel’s guitar playing was brilliant and Liam looked the part.

ZANI - Is it true before you signed Oasis, you thought they were fascists because of their use of the Union Jack?

Alan McGee - That was a year before I signed them, it was only because I was told that by Debbie Turner. I was in her office and I saw their poster with the swirling Union Jack on the wall, I asked if they were a fascist band, she said yes they are.

ZANI – There is one artist on the Creation label that hardly ever gets a mention, a very beautiful woman called Idha.

Alan McGee - Her second album Troublemaker is a fucking amazing record. She’s a house wife in Sweden now. But to her credit to if you make an album that good, you probably don’t need to do it again.

ZANI – True, one last question on Oasis, what it your favourite track by them and your fondest memory of the band ?

Alan McGee - Probably ‘Don’t Look Back In Anger’ is my favourite track. I have many fond memories of Oasis, but probably The Word in 1994 doing ‘Supersonic’. I was ill in a drug rehabilitant centre and seriously depressed as I was coming off the gear, but watching Oasis on TV for the first time made me forget all about that.
