Liam Gallagher 'Mad For Total Wipeout Appearance'

Liam Gallagher is to put his cool rock star image on the line by appearing on a special edition of Total Wipeout, according to a report.

The singer is apparently a big fan of the modern day equivalent of It's A Knockout and keen to test himself on the famous giant red balls.

He will get the opportunity to live out that dream when the BBC films a celebrity edition of the show for Sport Relief, reports the Mirror.

Presenter Amanda Byram has apparently talked Liam into appearing on the charity show alongside some other household names.

A source revealed: 'Liam Gallagher and Fearne Cotton are Wipeout addicts and up for it.'

Liam has been busy building his fashion brand, Pretty Green, since his brother Noel walked out on Oasis last year.

He has also been working on a new album with the remnants of Oasis, who have now been renamed Beady Eye.

In typically bold fashion, Liam has already predicted the band's debut album will be 'the best record you'll hear for the next 50 years'.

If he approaches the Total Wipeout course in a similarly overconfident mood, Liam is heading for a soaking.

More From Tony McCarroll's Book

Former Oasis drummer Tony McCarroll writes in his new book 'Oasis: The Truth' that before Liam and Noel Gallagher joined the band, they used to end their gigs with a song called 'We're Having A Rave On The Roof'.

It was a tribute to the Strangeways prison riots, according to the drummer.

Ex Oasis Man Disabled David Beckham's Black Ferrari Spider's Retractable Roof

More from the memoirs of ex-Oasis drummer Tony McCarroll, who, we learned yesterday, was responsible (along with Liam Gallagher) for "accidentally" damaging the cars of Manchester United stars Paul Ince and Eric Cantona while working as a car valet in the band's early days.

Soon after being fired from the band, McCarroll found himself back in the same job, helping to clean David Beckham's black Ferrari Spider.

He claims he and his employer, known only as "Big Un", mistakenly disabled the car's retractable roof just as a "coiffured and lotioned" Beckham prepared to drive it to Old Trafford to sign a new contract with United.

The glum superstar was forced to take his Cadillac Escalade 4x4 to the meeting instead. Soon after he drove off, however, McCarroll (a Man City fan) miraculously fixed the Ferrari's roof. These things happen.

Liam Gallagher And Tony McCarroll 'Sabotaged' Manchester United Players' Cars

After being fired from Oasis by Noel Gallagher in 1995, the band's original drummer, Tony McCarroll, sued for his slice of the five-album deal. This week, McCarroll, 38, publishes his version of the now-defunct band's early history: Oasis: The Truth, The Noel Truth Is Nothing Like The Truth.

Perhaps his most incendiary revelation is that the band's beginnings were funded by footballers, not from the Gallaghers' beloved Manchester City but from arch-rivals United. While struggling as musicians, McCarroll writes, both he and Liam Gallagher worked for a car valeting firm which serviced the vehicles of United's stars.

The players' business was secured after McCarroll's boss, one "BigUn", tricked Gallagher into delivering a fake love letter to Reds striker Mark Hughes, who saw the funny side. Among BigUn's Old Trafford clients were Paul Ince, whose wheel arches Gallagher wrecked by scrubbing them with wire wool, and Eric Cantona, whose new Mercedes lost a driver's door while in their care. Both incidents, claims McCarroll, were unfortunate accidents. I believe you, Tony – thousands wouldn't.

Noel Gallagher Set To Take Paul McCartney's Crown

The man who signed Oasis rates Noel Gallagher almost as highly as he rates himself.

Alan McGee, founder of Creation Records, has had a listen to Mr Big's new solo material and thinks it will rank him alongside the likes of Lennon and McCartney.

No pressure, then.

Alan said: "I've heard the Noel demos. They're f***ing genius. For me, the guy's a McCartney, a Lennon, a Neil Young - he's one of the greats.

"When McCartney goes, it's Noel's crown really, isn't it?"

McGee even feels there are tracks worthy of mention alongside Oasis's biggest hits.

He said: "There's three songs on the demos - I won't go naming them cos I'm not his manager - but they're up there with Don't Look Back In Anger and Live Forever.

"He's f***ing done it again."

Meanwhile, Noel's nipper Sonny wasn't the only Oasis-related baby born last Friday.

James Cropley, who plays Noel in tribute band Noasis, had a boy too - Samuel Benjamin - on the same day. "It's a weird coincidence," he said.

I doubt Cropley's new material will place him alongside Lennon and McCartney though, just Cannon And Ball.

What's The Story? Was Bill Clinton Meeting Noel Gallagher? Definitely Maybe . . .

Rumours of a surprise celebrity guest had showbiz correspondents scrambling ahead of Bill Clinton's keynote address in Londonderry last week.

The flurry came after one resourceful journalist who obtained a list of the great and good invited to hear the former president's speech spotted a familiar name - Noel Gallagher.

Was the ex-Oasis songwriter really en route to the University of Ulster to hear the 64-year-old statesman's musings on the troubled Northern Ireland economy?

The ripple of intrigue created within the press corps turned into a wave when it emerged the aforementioned Mr Gallagher had yet to arrive.

"Oasis snubs Clinton," declared one experienced hack, imagining the next day's headlines.

Fearing the story was about to gain legs, a US Consulate staffer moved to dampen the speculation.

"I can categorically state that the Noel Gallagher invited here is not the Oasis Noel Gallagher," he interrupted.

"He's a local businessman."

If the Mancunian rocker had popped in there certainly wouldn't have been any lack of cameras to capture the moment.

As well as the usual suspects from the main broadcast networks, not one but two fly-on-the-wall documentary crews were also trailing the dignitaries.

A team from America's NBC is following Mr Clinton round the world for a film about his working life post-presidency, while local production company Below The Radar is shadowing Peter Robinson for a new TV programme about the First Minister.

Brian Cannon Talks Oasis And More

Brian Cannon, the man behind some of the most iconic sleeve designs in the history of British music this year celebrates 20 years in the business. Over the past two decades, Brian’s company Microdot has worked with bands such as The Verve, Suede, Insprial Carpets, Super Furry Animals and of course Oasis.

After training as a graphic designer, Brian set up Microdot in 1990 and first came to prominence working with The Verve. Sleeve designs such as those for singles ‘She’s A Superstar’, ‘Gravity Grave’ and the band’s debut album ‘A Storm In Heaven’ are still regarded as some of the most innovative and original of the last two decades. The company eclipsed their own early success however with their work with Oasis in the mid-nineties.

From the iconic white on black logo Oasis to every single and album sleeve until 1998, Microdot’s designs were seen as a fitting visual companion to the bands music, often referencing both the songs themselves and giving a nod to band’s own influences. Brian is a central figure in Oasis history not just for his work with Microdot but as a friend of the band, he often made appearances on record and is one of the few ‘eye witnesses’ to the band’s early success.

In 4 short years, the company founded in a small office in the North West of England saw their work on the covers of multimillion selling records across the world in a not so distant era before technology diluted the prominence of sleeve designs and the skill of ‘man made’ cover art. Microdot resisted digitized artwork until the release of Super Furry Animal’s 1996 debut ‘Fuzzy Logic’ however Brian would still rely on traditional graphic design methods as would become their trademark in the years to come.

In a Q magazine poll of the Top 100 album covers of all time, Microdot were featured twice, for Definitely Maybe (Oasis) and This is Music (The Verve). As well as these classic pieces, Microdot also designed the StopCryingYourHeartOut logo, arguably the zenith of their 20 years in the business....

A retrospective of their work is currently on display at www.microdotcreative.co.uk and to celebrate the company’s 20th, Brian Cannon granted us an exclusive Q&A this month.

What's the strangest thing happened to you while shooting a band?

That has to be the Wonderwall story, originally Liam was the person seen through the picture frame. I had sent a message to Marcus Russell, Oasis manager to tell him and Noel about the shoot, a message he obviously didn’t receive. Mid shoot, and this is totally true, Noel just happened purely by chance to be passing in a taxi!! Next thing you know an irate Noel Gallagher jumps out the taxi which screeched to halt and shouted ‘What the f****s going on here?’ he put a halt to proceedings saying it had to be a girl in the shot!

Are there any recent bands that you'd like to work with?

I’d absolutely love to work on Noel’s new stuff, and seeing as he, probably more than any other rock star, values the opinions of his fans – get a petition going!! Other than that, I think the Arctic Monkeys are ace and The Whip.

Besides photography have you tried any other kind of art, like painting?

I am actually trained as a graphic designer, photography is just one of the disciplines I enjoy. I haven’t painted for a while and used to really enjoy printmaking. Compiling collages is also something I enjoy.

What in your opinion are the top three album/single covers you have worked on?

Can I have four?... The Verve - A Storm In Heaven, Oasis – Some Might Say, Oasis - Definitely Maybe and The Verve – This Is Music.

What album covers first inspired you to take up the profession?

It was all about The Sex Pistols for me as a young lad, Never Mind The Bollocks is, in my opinion, the greatest typographical album sleeve of all time. It was punk generally and the Pistols in particular that inspired me to do the job.

On a overwhelming majority of Microdot sleeves NO digitisation was used. Why was this so important to you?

A lot of it was down to the fact that in the early days I simply couldn’t afford the technology!! Then when we could we still resisted as it became our trademark. It gives me great satisfaction to look back on all those great sleeves and think, ‘we actually DID that.’

For the cover of The Verve 'She’s A Superstar' how much food colouring did you add to the water to get that effect? And did you have to get permission to do it?

It was a plastic dustbin full, the sort you’d have in your garden and no we didn’t ask for permission, it was after all bio degradable and caused no harm.

How involved was Noel in the creation of the album and single artwork. How much collaboration was there between him (or the band itself) and you?

It varied, but Noel and I ALWAYS got together before a sleeve project, he’d give me his thoughts then I’d turn it into reality. Communication was always the key, borne out by the fact that we NEVER had to re shoot a sleeve.

Would you work with the Gallagher's on any of their new projects?

See above.

What is your favourite album artwork of all time?

Pink Floyd’s Ummagumma & The Sex Pistols Never Mind The Bollocks.

What is the hardest part in doing an album sleeve?

I don’t find any of it ‘hard’, I love doing it and I’m good at it. I suppose it only ever becomes a bit difficult if the band I’m working with has no ideas and the communication between us is lacking – something that never happened while working with Oasis or The Verve or most of the bands I have worked with.

How/when did you meet Noel and what were your first impressions of him?

I first met Noel in 1992/3, I had a tiny office in the same building as the Inspiral Carpets in Manchester for whom Noel worked as a roadie. Noel and I would see each other around the building but we were too cool to actually speak to each other. That was until one day when I got into the lift at work wearing a pair of trainers unavailable in England at the time, Adidas Indoor Super, which I had bought in Rome when I took my Mum for her 60th birthday. The first thing Noel Gallagher ever said to me was ‘Alright, I put me hands up, where the F***k did you get them trainers?!’ We got talking and he asked what I did, I told him I was into designing record sleeves – he asked me what I had done, I told him about the early Verve stuff, he was impressed as he liked The Verve and their artwork. As he was leaving the lift he said ‘I’m in a band, and when we get signed I want you to do the artwork’ That literally is it, talk about being in the right place at the right time!!!!!!

What made you commit to working with him?

I thought he was not only cool, but a really good laugh and very likeable. Oh .... and his band were brilliant!

What process did you and Noel use for creating the artwork? Did you see Noel becoming more confident in it as you worked with him, or was he always confident about it?

He’d tell me his ideas, I’d listen to the music, study the lyrics, dunno how it happened really – I just got it, you have to realise I didn’t just do the artwork for Oasis, I was a MASSIVE fan too. Noel was always confident about everything, everything related to Oasis at least.

Did Noel always have the final say in what artwork was used?

Of course, he was, as he was known within the inner circle – ‘The Chief’

Which Oasis artwork are you most proud of?

I love Some Might Say, a great literal interpretation of the lyrics, and my Mum and Dad are on it too! Definitely Maybe has become a classic, I also think Roll With It is top, we had a great laugh doing that.

Are there any covers which, with hindsight, you would have designed differently?

No. They are what they are, no point looking back and thinking ‘Oh I wish....’

Noel said in November 2006 that his favourite Oasis covers were Shakermaker and Who Feels Love. Could you talk through the process for creating Shakermaker and what do you think about Who Feels Love?

The concept behind the Shakermaker artwork was kind of based on the lyric about Mr. Soft and this imaginary wibbly wobbly world. If you look at the back sleeve everything is normal and there is no music being played through the cassette player. On the front you can see my hand pressing play on an Oasis cassette, the music comes out and melts all the objects in the room! As you know we never used any photoshop effects and the most difficult thing was sourcing all objects that were plastic and thus meltable, the most difficult being the plastic picture frames that looked like wood. We did the back sleeve then took everything outside and I literally got an industrial blowtorch and melted everything. Funnily enough at this point of the process Bonehead and Liam turned up and saw me having the time of my life playing with fire and stated ‘Cannon, you’ve got the best job in the world!’. With regards Who Feels Love, I think it’s the best Oasis sleeve I didn’t do.

Which Oasis recordings do you appear on?

I do handclaps on All Around The World, I speak on the end of the Warchild version of Fade Away, I play keyboards on the title track of Morning Glory and my footsteps can be heard on the end of Be Here Now.

Did the other members of the band ever show any interest in, or have any input to the artwork at all?

They were all very interested, they didn’t have input as such, that was all down to Noel, but we always had a laugh doing them.

Which Oasis era was the most memorable for you and why?

94 -96, I worked with them till 98, but the first 2 years when I saw them go from nothing to being almost as big as The Beatles was amazing. It was just such an incredibly exciting time and we all knew it was something special. Also they were making great music which people absolutely loved – it was ace!

Noel often used to criticise previous albums (with the exception of Definitely Maybe) when there was a new release. He did the same with the artwork a few times, how did you feel about this criticism?

I look at is this way, he approved it all in the first place – no artwork would have ever made a sleeve if Noel hadn’t been happy about it at the time

You were thanked in Paul Mathur's book "Take Me There". What did you think about the book?

I designed that book as well, I think it’s an honest account of the time, Paul was really the first journalist to get onto Oasis and be accepted by them. When we finished designing the book I treated all the Microdot team to a weekend in New York, Paul came with us and he STILL owes me £300 that I lent him!!

Did you like the artwork for Oasis' singles collection, Time Flies... What concept would you have used for it?

I think it’s good, probably because it looks like something we would have done at Microdot and it uses my logo.

Would you like to work with either Noel or Beady Eye on their new projects in the future, or would you prefer to keep the Oasis connection as the perfect memory that it is?

Oasis will always be the perfect memory, but I would love to work with Noel again.

Of all the artists you have worked with, with whom did you feel the greatest connection? Did this make for the best work?

The best work I ever did was for both The Verve and Oasis, we were great friends and I think it shows.

On This Day In Oasis History...

(What's the Story) Morning Glory? is the second album by the English rock band Oasis, released on October 2 1995. The album went straight to #1 in the UK, selling 347,000 copies in its first week. (What's the Story) Morning Glory? spawned four hit singles in the UK, two of which were #1s. It sold over 19 million copies worldwide, including over 4.3 million copies in the UK, 14x platinum, and is currently the third biggest-selling album in UK chart history. Morning Glory has gone 4x platinum in the United States In addition, the singles "Wonderwall" and "Champagne Supernova" went Gold in the United States.

The album, which was recorded in less than two weeks, contains arguably the band's two most famous songs, "Wonderwall" and "Don't Look Back in Anger", along with "Champagne Supernova" and their first UK #1 single, "Some Might Say".

In 1997 Morning Glory was named the 5th greatest album of all time in a 'Music of the Millennium' poll conducted by HMV, Channel 4, The Guardian and Classic FM. In 1998 Q magazine readers placed it at number 8, and in 2000 it achieved the same position in Q's list of the 100 Greatest British Albums Ever. The editors of Q magazine declared it the "album of the decade" in 1999. The readers of Q placed it seventh on the 2006 top 100 greatest albums of all time list. In 2003, the album was ranked number 376 on Rolling Stone magazine's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time.

History

The success of Morning Glory catapulted Oasis from being a successful Britpop band to being one of the biggest bands in Britain, with substantial international fame, and considerable press coverage in the mainstream and music press. The band played several massive open air concerts in the UK during 1996, which included two nights at Knebworth in front of a combined audience of 250,000 people (125,000 each night), with over 2.5 million applying to buy tickets.

Tracklisting

01: "Hello" (Gallagher/Glitter/Leander) – 3:21
02: "Roll with It" – 4:00
03: "Wonderwall" – 4:19
04: "Don't Look Back in Anger" – 4:48
05: "Hey Now!" – 5:41
06: Untitled (aka "The Swamp Song - Excerpt 1") – 0:43
07: "Some Might Say" – 5:31
08: "Cast No Shadow" – 4:52
09: "She's Electric" – 3:40
10: "Morning Glory" – 5:03
11: Untitled (aka "The Swamp Song - Excerpt 2") – 0:41
12: "Champagne Supernova" – 7:27

Notes:

* Tracks 6 and 11 are officially untitled. In fact, the track listing bears no title whatsoever for these songs, merely a blank space.
* The excerpts from "The Swamp Song" are parts of the instrumental B-side to the "Wonderwall" single.
* The vinyl LP edition of the album features a bonus track, "Bonehead's Bank Holiday". This song appears as the 7th track on the album, immediately after the 43-second untitled track.
* "Step Out" had to be removed from the album at the last minute. The song, sung by Noel, was intended to have been the original track 8 (after "Some Might Say" and before "Cast No Shadow"), but was removed as the chorus was similar to the chorus of Stevie Wonder's 1965 track "Uptight (Everything's Alright)". Wonder's publishing company were alleged to have demanded a substantial amount of royalties from the album which Oasis weren't prepared to pay, so the track was removed, although not before the first promotional copies of the album had been released with "Step Out" included. The track was eventually released as a B-side on Oasis' 1996 single "Don't Look Back in Anger", with an amended song writing credit of 'Gallagher/Wonder/Cosby/May', and was included on the live album Familiar to Millions.

Miscellanea

"Hello" contains elements of Gary Glitter's "Hello Hello I'm Back Again" as Liam jokingly sings part of the song's chorus when the song begins to fade out.

On the cover of the album a man is seen brandishing what looks to be a vinyl record in its sleeve. This is in fact the master tape for the album. The man in question is Owen Morris, the producer. The photo was taken on Berwick Street in Soho, a London street well known for its independent record shops. The other man is BBC London's Sean Rowley.

Alan Mcgee Doesn't Recall Too Much About The Year He Discovered Oasis

Alan Mcgee doesn't recall too much about the year he discovered Oasis - at Glasgow's King Tut's Wah Wah Hut, in 1993.

"The drugs had moved on and were a lot harder by then," he said. "I recall signing Oasis but I barely remember anything else.

"In 1994, I recall being in LA during an earthquake. I remember flying to Japan and the Japanese media thinking I managed The Clash. I don't know if I ever really came back the same person after all that."

The Battle of Britpop also remains a blur. Alan said: "Ninety three was my lost year, I was already bad. Primal Scream were out of their minds then Noel and Liam arrived on my doorstep with Bonehead. It was like, turn the meter up full.

"Noel thinks I am a lightweight because I copped out after a year or two. What he doesn't know is that I had been hammering it on a nuclear level since 1988."

Oasis went on to sell 12 million copies of their debut album, 1994's Definitely Maybe, and over 20 million copies of the following year's (What's the Story) Morning Glory? - ensuring the label's success long-term.

Alan said: "I came out of rehab sober, put on Wonderwall and thought, 'We're going to sell 10 million'. I was wrong - we sold 21 million.
